Hello Janice I am one of your French viewers and I enjoyed the chat. I put a comment on one of your earlier vlogs and it might not have come through. I suggested you try to get involved in local activities, meet local people and practice your French. Generally the town halls have lists of local associations (It might be called "Fontainebleau accueil") you might want to become member of , according to your affinities and areas of interest. If you like outdoors, the forest around Fontainebleau is huge and great for gentle hiking, cycling if it is of any interest for you. With the warmer season, there is quite a lot to see in the département de Seine et Marne where you are : the chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte of course, the town of Meaux the chateau de Courances, Blandy les Tours, the banks of the Seine around Thomery, Moret sur Loing, the Jean Cocteau village of Milly la Forêt, which has a small antique sale on the first sunday of the month starting in March.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions because I am not really sure what is around here. I mean I know what is around here but you know what I mean I’ve not really had a chance to experience what is around here due to the weather. We had about six days of great weather and I had a friend come in to see me so of course that friend wanted to see all of the touristy things that I’ve already seen 5000 times but anyway I am really looking forward to experiencing getting to know my area a little bit better. I don’t hang out with Americans number one that doesn’t interest me at all and I don’t mean that in a bad way but I try to volunteer and there’s so much French around me and then there’s a lot of British around me so most people speak in French sorry most people speak in English. Where I volunteered for the Ukraine people for all the items to go to Poland they all spoke English my stylist speaks French and she’s trying to learn English for me so it’s just fun just really really fun. Now I need some cooperation from the weather. Currently it’s like 42° and raining

Janice, thank you for doing these videos. I am 73, recently widowed and planning another trip to France. Your videos are fun, educational and positive. To the rude Americans commenting on WWII, I would ask them to visit the American cemeteries of both wars and thank the French men and woman who lovingly and respectively care for those properties.

Hi Janice, so happy to have discovered your channel! I like it for a few different reasons. First of course because I love Paris. My husband and I didn’t visit Paris until I was 60 and he was 65. We went twice in one year and then we went back another time. He passed away at 71 in September and oh am I glad that we did that. We both loved it! Second, I love what you’re doing at the young senior age of 70. It’s inspiring and you’re my kind of woman! I also get how much fun it is to look as French as possible while you’re there. It’s definitely nothing against the US. We would get tickled when people mistook took us to be from Paris. I am interested in starting a channel and I would love the media kit from Hannah. Again thank you for being you!

Hi Janice, I just found you. I subscribed. I was first in Paris in 1955 at the age of 15 with my parents. Been back several times. Rented an apartment in Paris when I was a widow at 50. Bought 1/6 of a chalet in Suisse and had it for 10 years as a widow. This was all before computers, the internet and the cell phone. I used to rent American movies and after a day of living in a foreign culture I would come home and watch American movies and relax in my own culture. Also in those days a phone call cost a fortune. So I was very much on my own. No animals with me either. Still, I loved the experiences I had. I'm coming to Paris this summer and I would love to contact your friend who is a tour guide there. You have a wonderful personality.
I admire that you are doing this in your 70ies.

You have been incredibly brave moving to France on your own. Be proud of yourself! (I'm sure you are!) Don't worry about the mistakes you have made. I have to say this is one of my favorite videos. I think this is a nice format... just a chat with the women friends. BUT that said, I am glad you were pretty clear about your boundaries, because I think some folks out here might take it more literally. There is another young woman who lives in Paris and she has a UA-cam channel, and she did mention arranging a Meet and Greet, but... in very public spaces. But, such face to face meetings I think are better kept private and to natural friendships that arise, either in person or online. So, good for you for setting boundaries and pfft to any of those rude comments. And hurra, thank you!! As an American living abroad, thank you for speaking out about American rudeness abroad and for the personal losses and destruction that has happened in the two world wars fought here, and the need for respect. We expect guests in our American homes to be respectful of ourselves and our homes, yes? So it is natural that those we are visiting also deserve the same. I don't know why that gets forgotten, but thank you for reminding us. It is a lovely thing to be American, and even nicer to be proud when ones fellow Americans behave in a way that is a credit to the American flag and our country and traditions. 😊💕

For me I've noticed while traveling to other countries, that there are "vacationers" and "travelers", the latter being the people that take time to learn about the culture and immerse themselves in the local customs. We have been fortunate enough to be able to spend "slow" time in Italy, Paris, Spain, Greece, Mexico and Turkey. We are Americans and I have at times been embarrassed by fellow Americans behavior in other countries, I understand what you are meaning and took no offense. I wish I could learn languages easily, but I have a hearing problem and it's almost impossible for me. I do learn some words and use them, but then if someone speaks to me in their language, I can't understand them. It's been a struggle at times when we travel, but I do notice that if we just try and use a translator app when really needed we do just fine. We've gotten lost and found our way, we've been in small villages and managed to communicate when no one spoke English (except us), it has a lot to do with attitude, stay open and positive, be kind and patient and that is usually what you will receive in return. Janice you are an inspiration and I admire you for taking this leap and living your best life. And you look marvelous too! I can tell you really care about your health, I will be turning 60 in October and I am inspired by you to stay healthy and not give up on knowing that there are many years ahead for me to live my life in joy.

My husband is French and I’ve been learning for 15 years now, it’s really hard! When you don’t live there and use it every day it’s really difficult to progress. Someday we’ll move from Houston and buy a B&B there, I’m counting every minute. In the meanwhile I’ll live vicariously through you. 🥰

Though I completely understand and agree with you separating youtube and your life, I would do the same. You have to be careful and protect yourself.
Another investment opportunity which is in France that doesn’t exist in the US is a Viaget (vee-ah-zjay). This is someone that is older that allows someone to buy their home over time, either while they still live in it or while it is free or unlived in. It’s best for people that have time to wait for their investment to “mature”. It could be something great for your daughter! In most cases it’s a win-win for the retiree/owner and for the investor. You might check into it just to see if it’s for you and your daughter. My husband and I have been on the lookout for an unlived in one (they call it “open/libre”) so we can immediately start using it as a b&b or airbnb, then it practically pays for itself hopefully. A lot of salt-of-the-earth, big-hearted hard workers come from there. Now we know where you developed your stength-it’s as big as Tx.
These days everyone wants to live in Bellaire and West U but it costs $$$$$$. As far as I’m concerned our cute little 3-bedroom bungalow with a/c units was better than any million $ mansion 🥰 My parents divorced and sold the house for $60k and they thought they hit pay dirt. Little did they know they could have sold for $300k 10 years later 🤨

Julie text me back and said we need to go as soon as my right hand is healed from surgery. When I was 72 I moved to Belfast Ireland for almost 6 months then returned the next year with my grandson to visit my friend in Belfast, Carrick on shannon, Galway, Cork and Dublin then over to Scotland. What an amazing blessing for both of us. A couple months later I returned to Carrick on shannon for 3 months. Three years ago I went to Belfast for Christmas for 2 weeks. I am originally from a little place called Roan Mountain, Tennessee and took 4 years of French in school. I thought you might like to have this little tidbit of information, since you are a Southern girl as well. If you ever feel like you are frustrated with someone in France, you could always say, "Eh bien, bénissez votre cœur." The Southern equivalent to, "Well bless your heart." *winks*

Hello Janice, I thoroughly enjoy all your videos and I’m always looking forward to the next one! Please do not second-guess your decision to move to France because there is no time like the present to make our dreams come true, and as we get older, time is at a premium! I’m a little older than you and I have been to Paris three times for short visits, and I have become a total Francophile! I love the sound of the French language although I only know a few words, and I have never been one to learn a language easily, but I’m sure if I spent more time there, I would pick up a few basic words to help me get through the day. Whenever I’m stressed, I picture myself in Paris on a rainy day, walking with my umbrella near the Eiffel tower or enjoying a glass of wine under an awning on the Champs Élysées.
Please know that I am wishing you much success in this new chapter of your life! Stay happy and healthy and continue to follow your heart!
You are an inspiration to us all, and please don’t worry if you want to move back to the US. Or somewhere else. To everything, there is a season!

Janice, I understand you perfectly in your discussion of American comportment abroad. This has nothing to do with not being supportive of America or Americans or shame. I’m a 20th century historian and I have a copy of a handbook published in 1942 by the U.S. military for soldiers stationed in England. The handbook advised soldiers how to be polite, how to be empathetic with what the British had been through since 1939, and how, in effect, to avoid being “an ugly American.” Americans have had an aggressive, boisterous, and somewhat braggart’s reputation in Europe for decades. To advise on such things is not political or unappreciative of being an American. It’s just cultural differences. So get over it everyone. Janice’s advice comes from a long history of similar admonitions!

Question: If you moved to France on a shoestring budget, and presumably did not bring in a major savings or investment, how did you get residency?

I have a steady income with two pensions and my social security. What they mainly look for when you apply for your visa is that you have an income that you can count on at all times. They don’t care about what you have in the bank as far as 401(k)s are $500,000 in the bank they want to know that you have something coming in every month.

Having lived in France, Belgium and Latin America for so many years I only once witnesses a rude American. I think we tend to get sensitive and hyper focus on what Americans do or how we dress. Believe me rude people come in all nationalities. Also big cities don’t represent the rest of a country. Small towns in France are not Paris. NYC is not the USA and so on. Living in Texas now and believe me I find people here so kind and polite and I lived in NYC for a long time too and people are more stressed there. Quite a different experience. Your experience depends on you abd what you make of it.

I am dreaming of either Italy or France to stop working for a while and move for a few months

what shall I start with ?
Do I rent from here or get there amd start looking for an apartament , it fascinates me the thought but at the same time iI am intimidated by the unknown

I'm not American, but have lived in the country before. I think the "American" phasing can be changed to "rude tourists" or "rude Americans", because "American" (like French, Indian, any country) implies nationality or ethnicity and that isn't inherently bad while the rude behaviors / actions are and can be changed.
