It's definitely your story,thanks for sharing. The cake came out nice except for the height and the sharp edges,but only a baker would notice still. Why don't you make use of pillow pan instead of carving? Covering full or cutting out mean?

Okay, pillow pans fall into the category of pans that I rarely use, for example, throughout last year, I didn't make a single pillow cake so it would save me cost and space buying and storing it without use. They're just like number pans or character pans. But if it's something one makes all the time or from time to time, then all well and good, it's okay to invest in one.
