    There is something so satisfying both visually and aurally (? audibly?) when you are helping him shed his summer coat!! As for his new location, the grass might not be as pretty, but I think overall it’s a prettier place with the variety of trees and rolling nature of the ground. And the fact that this type of grass is wonderful. Before you had people not understanding why you were keeping him in the pen. Now you have people complaining about the quality of the grass. You can’t win! Except you have Rudnik, so you’ve already won! Have a great weekend!

    🤣. We have a white that does that, one day we left her to walk around the yard because the grass was really good. Well, I left the kitchen door open and was washing dishes, I felt a breath and turned. She was right by me looking at me washing dishes, my heart left my body. I don't get how I didn't hear her. Took her out and she insisted on watching me thru the window or door. She is very playful and such a pet. And would follow anyone if she thought she would get treats. 🤣

    I disagree with you. I think that where Rudnik is now is a lot prettier that his previous pasture. The land is more undulating and thus seems to have more "character", there are more trees for shade from the hot sun in the summer and as you advised us the lack of lush grass is healthier for Rudnik. All in all, a big PLUS.

  • @Baldevi
    @Baldevi 5 днів тому +11

    I think this new space is much prettier, honestly. Sure, more even areas of green grass might look nicer, but this pasture looks REAL, with so much space, and all the trees, the fencing looks nicer somehow too, and no busyish road in the background either.
    It is good that Rudnik got used to vehicles passing often, but it also seemed to make him feel edgy every time a truck went by, poor guy.
    The trees do it for me, and I know that come Spring, it will be greener, but not crazy tall, thick, or sugary. Rudnik will likely enjoy chewing some bark over the winter to get some extra Vitamin C too.
    I know it's a longer drive for you, but I do think this was a great find for Rudnik since you had to move him anyway. He seems to like it a lot, and now he's finally making friends and not feeling like he needs to isolate anymore, yay!

Yes it’s sad watching them have to adjust and settle in but he’s been doing so well so far! And I personally think the natural landscape is gorgeous despite not having all the green lush grass - definitely a better fit for the chonky boy altogether!

    We are having an extremely warm and dry late winter early Spring here, and for one of the first times I'm not having to worry about my boys getting porked up and trying to make them wear grazing muzzles. I am learning so much from you about these gorgeous beautiful animals. I am so curious and have so many questions but I’m a dog mom now for 60 years so I can only use dog terms! Don’t judge!
    1) Do male horses get along better with males or females?
    2) What happens if Rudnik wants to mate a female that’s another males private partner or what?
    3) Who is that red or I guess Chestnut horse with black tail that has been seemingly to me a wee bit aggressive and bit him one time, made him whimper, is he bonded with a female that she went to see Rudnik and the chestnut got jealous?
    4) Do horses have family like structures like wolves?
    5) Do they spay or neuter horses to prevent unwanted pregnancies?
    6) the place you’re boarding him at, do they bring all the horses in at night? What about weather, like in winter. If you can’t be there daily, do they also care for him like feeding him, putting him in a stall at night?
    Okay I may have asked too much. Answer when you can. No rush.
    Take care of yourself, your new wee one and the two great wonderful men in your life! I pray and wish the moon and stars joy and happiness for you all!
    Angel Blessings 💙🇺🇸💙

    • @rudniktheroan
      @rudniktheroan  4 дні тому +2

      Ok I’m going to try my best to answer every question! 😂
      1. It really depends on the horses. Some can get along better with mares while some best with geldings. It really depends on the herd structure and the individual horses themselves but most of the time everyone can get along with each other no matter mare or gelding.
      2. Because they are separated, it’s not likely that would happen. However in such a situation, the other male would become protective of the mare from any other males and keep them away from her.
      3. The bay horse in question is most likely more of the ‘boss’ of the herd. The horse he was protecting was another male however if they have become a bonded pair, he could be protecting the other boy from the new guy until he knows Rudnik won’t cause him harm. While he wasn’t being aggressive or attacking, he was showing Rudnik to just stay back and keep a distance for now. Until they get to know him better.
      4. So structure in a herd is actually quite interesting and can vary depending on the size and the herd. I just completed my diploma in Equine psychology and was actually surprised to learn that horses don’t have ‘pecking orders’. There is a lead stallion and a lead mare. And then the rest of the herd. However, horses do not follow the same kind of order as most species. There is no real ranking aside from lead mare/stallion. For example, a horse may be able to dominate another horse for food, pushing him away from the pile of food to take it for himself. However the same horse that will be chased off from food, may not allow another horse to chase him away from a shelter and will stand his ground. Their order is more based on needs and survival. So horse A may be able to boss around horse B, but combined, horse B & C can boss around horse A. While horse B will allow horse A to push him around and away from food, horse B may chase horse A away from shelter and shade. Does that make sense?
      5. For the spay/neuter question: it’s most common that males will be castrated (gelded) because this is far less invasive and costly than having a mare sterilized. While mares can be sterilized and have been due to health reasons etc, it’s far more common to geld the males which is why you’ll see so many geldings. They are castrated males. Stallions are intact males and can be (not always!) more hot headed and unpredictable than geldings.
      6. Final question: so Rudnik actually stays outside 24/7. I’ve never had to stall him, with the exception of putting him into a dry pen to lose weight. Which was just a small paddock. But he lives outside with his herd 24/7. They have a ton of trees for shelter and shade from the elements and because horses remain in a group, animals are very unlikely to go after them because natural instinct is to avoid a fight you know you won’t win and most wild animals wouldn’t dare pick a fight with a herd of horses. Maybe one if they’re alone or injured but they very rarely - if ever - will go up against multiple. And if I can’t be there everyday, which I usually can’t, because he has so much land he’s always got food. He’s an easy keeper so I don’t feed grain and his water is always cool and fed automatically into their large water trough!
      I hope I answered all your questions and hopefully some of them made sense 😅

    • @christmasbarn55
      @christmasbarn55 2 дні тому

      @@rudniktheroan yes they did make sense. Very interesting. Oh how I wished as a child I could have full filled my love of horses. But growing up in a small town, and my maternal grandparents raised Black Angus cows. Not a large herd. I really don’t know. I was about 9 when dad’s job took him south and I missed so much of living near grandparents and childhood friends. There’s a local family, super rich, descendants of the founder who has several old homes, one has horses. If I can I might call to see if I can visit their horses after my old girl, dog passes. She’s 17 going on 18 and went blind this year and has been deaf since I dunno when. So I’m totally wrapped up caring for her now. I’m so happy I’m retired so I don’t have to leave her alone.
      Thank you for answering.its so wonderful to see you working with Rudnik and too cute your fiancé got hooked too! My husband had never even had a goldfish when he met me I had 3 Lhasa Apso’s. I told him, and I was not joking, if they didn’t like him, we were a no go! So, my husband grew to love dogs. Also how long does it take for them to shed their summer coat?

    • @rudniktheroan
      @rudniktheroan  3 години тому

      Usually a couple of weeks. In the spring it can take longer to shed their winter coat though

    I probably am stupid but what will you do with him in winter. I believe you’re in Canada so very cold

    • @rudniktheroan
      @rudniktheroan  4 дні тому

      We really don’t do anything special. His winter coat grows in SO lush and thick he’s never had to be blanketed and I don’t stall him (unless he is sick or hurt) but they have so many trees in their pasture they’ll just do what horses do and ignore the shelter to stand out in the middle of the snow 🥲 but in all honestly he’s got a lot of protection from the elements and in our area we usually have fairly mild winters with a cold snap here and there that maybe lasts a week. Some years we don’t even get snow until after January

      @@tassi8925 it’s funny because that was the biggest expense we’ve had since I adopted him. But it can happen at anytime and leave you completely unprepared! So best mindset with horses - if it can happen, it will. Prepare for the worst at all times 🥲

    Do you have plans to integrate your new child into the channel?
    Odd question, I know, just wondering.

      @rudniktheroan  4 дні тому +1

      In some ways, yes. I’m not sure how yet but we’d definitely love to be able to share how Rudnik gets along with his future best friend, and what it’s like growing up with a horse buddy 🥰

      That being said - I will never ‘revolve’ our content around them, I don’t plan on having a baby just to give myself more content to post (if that makes sense?) however, if it happens that it works with the direction our channel is already going and its natural then yes they will be somewhat involved but most likely very minimally

    What is a chestnut?!

    • @rudniktheroan
      @rudniktheroan  3 години тому

      They’re deposits of keratin that form on their legs. They can be removed but not all horses have them. They can also carry unique scents for each horse and grow differently depending on the horse
