If it was a predator attack, I wonder if it happened when she was a baby. It seems like a rip that long would be about 18 inches on a baby but on an adult horse it’s over 2 feet long, and also very high off the ground. Just a theory.

It seems you picked a winner--she's got beauty and brains, good confirmation, and nice way of moving. Courageous and curious, too. @WendyBeall It’s much more likely that she got that injury from another horse or even when she was captured. There are very rarely predators like mountain lions for the wild horses, which is why they have to be rounded up because they over populate.

I luv this on sooooo many levels. It's the most natural thing in the world to literally live with the horse. So many advantages for both of you. Have you ever put yourself in the horse's " shoes" tamed or wild? He sees the human at feeding time, training time, maybe a little hanging out time, and that's it. The human suddenly appears at a certain time, and then poof, gone. The horse never really gets to know about a human. This is gonna be an awesome adventure !!!! I feel better already❤

I like your slow patient calm approach & spending time with her. -- I know these competitions are good at bringing awareness to American Mustangs, but it is also kind of pressuring the trainers & the horses with limited time. Whatever you achieve, then that's what is possible & showing the training whether you win or not is the important part.

She's a beauty, even with her scars. They look like she was atacked by a mountain lion to me. So happy you have her.

I love this type of training. Creation of a new herd dynamic, one built on mutual respect. Her intelligence and intuitiveness is wonderful. The scar does not detract from her beauty and the kindness in her eyes, just a wonder to witness. Looking forward to watching the progress.

That was really so good and informative! I really watched her ears, laying back but most of the time normal. When you had her in the corner, I thought oh, here it comes, that she might get upset but she was truly pretty relaxed like not a big deal. A wild horse, that looks calm, for the most part. No kicking, no rearing, and when you put that bag on her face, I could not believe it. Cant wait to see more of her progress.

Sometimes injuries can be beneficial, as well. I just bought a 2 year old Finnish horse, mare, and she has not been handled or taught a lot, she has been living on the field with older mares. And Finnish horses can be quite difficult, if they have not learned the basics when they are young. They have cold blood and propably also some Russian and Swedish cold blood mixed historically. So we started traininng her, and the first lesson was to leave her alone in the stable, when my Andalusian gelding was ridden. We did not know if the mare had ever been attached to the wall, so she was free and alone a couple of minutes - and she tried to escape, jumped on the wall and got a quite a bad wound in her chest. The vet came and it was very difficult to wash the wound and treat it, and the progress in her training stopped and took some back steps and I had to invent special tools longer than my hand to be able to clean and treat the wound. Luckily the foal is very brave and I was still able to lead the mare to the pasture and back normally, and also make some basic training. So she was not afraid of humans, she was just afraid of pain. But now when the wound has healed a bit (five days after the vet visit) I have been able to make all the necessary treatments without any problems, and I think our relationship is actually much stronger and better now, than before that accident. Because now she really has to trust me! So injuries can have same kind of effect on horses as asking horses lay down, which I have been making a lot as a show rider.

My first thought before you showed the closeup of the scar was she might have been savaged by a stallion, but that scar is crazy, if a mountain lion had her on the run I could see it grabbing her in its claws and then her showing it a pair of heels.

I love the name Maverick. I’m biased because that was the name of my first horse who was a character and lived to be 36 years old.
Hope you get some better sleep tonight.
