Up is the answer for storing any inventory. Heavy duty metal racks are inexpensive and easy to find used or even free if you dig around. You have the forklift already. You could easily consolidate your products into 1/2 the space you’re currently using. Plus the snow issue all but disappears.

Hey, I recommend some cantilever racking to store the wood as you grow. You don't have to go high, but can get two stacks into one area without customers having to reach high. If you put the backside of the rack to the road so you can load it with the forks on the tractor without going onto the road.

Next spring, as opportunity arises, you might paint a couple of division lines (with epoxy paint) to give an alignment system for all this lumber. Then, though the season, you can make small adjustments if a pile gets out of line. Should make it easier for next winter.

If you printed out a picture of your yard from from Google earth (put a dimension of say 8 feet on it to work from,) and then drew your new 8 and 10 foot piles on it to suit the measurements you wanted, you could paint the tarmac of the yard to show where the piles need to be and save yourselves a whole lot of problems later on when the wood piles and dunnage starts creeping and when people start pulling the piles around.
You could even use the goggle earth picture and some tracing paper to sort out a more professional drawing that you can keep for later consideration as things change, and when or if you want to squeeze more wood into the area, say on fixed racks or something similar.

That's getting close to the road and I'd find it worrisome for a number of reasons. You might consider pulling your survey out and making sure that you're not conducting any commerce encroaching on the highway right-of-way and that'd include at least the minimum depth along your frontage required for customer pull-off loading and access for your equipment before the inventory stacks starts. That way if anything unfortunate happens along the frontage, at least there's no doubt that your business activities were entirely and safely on your property and not in the public highway rightaway. Thirty years in business on a very busy city street and I found common sensical risk avoidance seldom if ever could directly prove that it was worth the effort/costs, but no regrets.

I believe that it is going to get old fast loading that middle pile by hand! How can things be rearranged so that you can sticker as you go coming off the LT40 and move the whole pile into place without handling it again? Putting the piles sideways will take up more room. Putting the piles on an angle so the forklift can get in will take less room than sideways and more room than end wise. Can the yard be re-arranged a little to make this work. I think it would save a lot of labor! Old pile would be picked up and set aside by forklift. New pile put in place by forklift. Level out the top of the new pile by hand. Put old pile on top with forklift.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people don't know the dif between softwood and hardwood. People always want to argue with me when I call an evergreen a 'softwood'. Yet you talk to someone who runs a mill and its second nature.

yeah exactly - one in steel, the wood will lay nice and flat with tons of air around. Even a roof

Racks are a good idea except they cost money! I think it can be worked out by putting the piles at an angle. I wonder if they could build racks with heavy timber.... 3 high would likely make up for being sideways.

@@boogboog8097 What kind of price are you coming up with? I came up with over $1000 per rack on a quick look.

I love the fall colors in the background, such a beautiful time of the year.....on the lumber stacking task, any chance you could go vertical.......

Yes, and with Em's red hair, it adds Pop to the autumnal palette.
Jade, nice work with the back lighting, too.

Now that your layout is perfect it would be a great time to get some lane marking spray paint (Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc.) and spray around each piece of dunnage so that your spacing is saved forever. Great job.

I hope no one touches your layout over night. No wonder "The Bossman " trusts the two of you to take care of these things, you work well together to develop a professional plan and approach to ensuring that things are done properly. Well done

Instead of using a tape measure for spacing, try a "story pole". Much faster and easier.
