#Metallica #BlackAlbum2021
This really deserved to be made into Jason's Orion. I still like My Friend of Misery but it's obvious it could've been so much more.
This is more like Jason's Anesthesia, a composition for bass
100% agree. Jason wanted Misery to be the instrumental song on The Black Album. Bob Rock had other plans...
@@Breadfan89 Bob rock spoke to tempos, tones and layering for production but he actually had very little do do with arrangements. The band remained steadfast that their songs were their songs, so I wouldn't be so quick to blame him for this outcome.
@@ChristoPatro truth. Furthermore. This is in no way like Orion. This just keeps repeating itself. The song they got out of it was the right way to go for sure. Misery is one of most unique songs in music recording history.
This demo is dry and boring/ dumb. I am glad that they found such a great song inside of it.
Jason deserved more time and room for songwriting, one of Metallica's best and underrated tunes.
Yeah but he was gonna sell Echobrain T shirts. James was totally right in telling him off and not an alcoholic control freak at all.
Lol
@@DeadHandBlues 😂
Still fucked up that Blackened was his contribution and they cut his work from it... pretty fucked imo.. Still love that hauntingly beautiful album though.
Agree 100%…he is not only an incredible musician but an incredible human! Miss his stage presence immensely
one of metallica’s most underrated songs. it’s a beautiful song.
Totally agree. The lyrics and riffs from this song have spoken to me internally since I was 16 years old.
@@brandonblackwell3502 for real?! that’s fucking awesome, rock on. that’s how it is with nothing else matters.
@@brandonblackwell3502 Tbh, I don't like the lyrics
This song was to be a instrumental. And for me, would be better.
Would make Jason have his highlight on whole Metallica career, like Cliff with Ktulu and Orion, or Rob with S. And Redemption... and hearing this demo, would be so beatful.
@@addie3235 I've seen them live 5 times. Nothing beats Metallica live. Nobody. First show was in 97'. Metallica always brings their A game.
@@brandonblackwell3502 damn, never seen them. my father has tho, i’m only 14 bahaha buuuut i plan to go to a concert of theirs at least 1 time.
This sounds gorgeous. Jason's like a bird who never got a chance to sing.
He chose not to. It was always his own decision to stay with Metallica.
Yeah, but he got to roar
He has had plenty of chances before, during and since
But he got to "Die, motherfucker die!"
& Justice For Jason.
I like to imagine Jason sitting in a dingy, dimly lit room on the edge of his bed just jamming out these riffs to a clapped out old boombox covered in Metallica stickers.
I like to imagine Jason with giant Eagle wings singing lead vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd
@@DeadHandBlues are you in the front row, hammered drunk?
@@DeadHandBlues quite the imagination you've got there!
@@wardkdouglas Where else would I be!
Sweet, innocent, baby Jason, sitting there in your manger, no care in the world
I'm still trying to imagine what it would sound like if it had been an instrumental, as Jason originally wanted
THIS IS what it would’ve and should’ve sounded like.
At the beginning you would hear "Bass solo. Take one" and Lars would come in halfway through and it would speed up a little bit lol.
@@dillinguuur79 Imagine if we got to hear the line "Bass solo take #2" since Cliff was take 1
@@dillinguuur79 no it would be "turn bass down on stereo." 😉🤣
I'd be happy with a 12 minute plus instrumental, would love some longer tracks.. what Iron Maiden Sign of the Cross was like 12 minutes long and kicked ass with all the changes and had vocals on top, that just being an instrumental would have been killer, well anything from Maiden would be.
Back to subject, To Live Is To Die is around 9 minutes long, we only had the words written on Cliffs grave stone uttered which added even more to the haunting beauty of that album.
Orion is under 9 minutes, back to And Justice For All, Blackened was done by Jason and they cut his work out on his own work... that was messed up imo, don't get me wrong I love the sound of the album, but should at least let him have his work on there... especially when keeping his work on the album.
The moment this song starts, it plunges you into a clear sense of darkness and depression.
This is where Jason’s bass “solo” comes from, the sadly was instrumental.
wasnt you mean?
@@thedancingguy828 this was supposed to be metallicas instrumental of the album, as they had an instrumental prior to black album
@@brandonphan788 i know lol, but his second sentence made no sense
Jason's solo is from cliff burtons last song which is to live is to die
It was never supposed to be an instrumental. He wanted it to be the instrumental for the album, but that wasn't the plan by everyone else involved with the album. At least, that is the way Jason put it in a video I saw here on youtube.
The Thing That Should Be
The thing that should've been
Comment of the year
Creeping bass line
This is far more technical and beautiful than what made it onto the album.
Can we just take a second to appreciate how beautiful this is? Jason is an underrated talent and was definitely underappreciated during his time in Metallica. He was a true pro through and through.
🤘🤘🤘🤘
Yeah yeah, he has released several masterpieces in the last 20 years.
Ah. Knew there would be an "underrated" comment within 6 posts.
@@DaveTaste ofc because it's true
@@DaveTaste All the Metallica hivemind ever talks about and worships is Burton. I hate the term "underrated" as anyone else should; it's a meaningless buzz term nowadays. However, I'd argue that Jason overall is probably their most underrated bassist
I know a Frrrrrriend of mine who' will enjoy this riff tape, SO MUCH
If we're thinking on the same guy, I hope he makes an analysis of it soon, frrrriend.
Hey frrriends!
@AndriyVasylenko
@@abrahamobregon7834 He has to. It'll be the perfect follow up to his analysis of Misery
hell yeah
I’ve been for so long wanting to hear the template for what later became “My Friend of Misery.” This is a real treat.
I like that term. Template.
Man this is so interesting to listen to. It's more intricate than what ended up on the album. The high parts are similar to what Jason played in his live bass solos, but the low notes are playing the riff that ended up being the guitar part during the verses. My friend of misery is one of the songs that really got me started playing bass in high school, hearing this is awesome. I love this deep dive content
I could not agree more , same sitch for me got me playing
I bought a bass guitar just to learn this song. 9 years later, the original strings are still on my bass lol!
Totally agree 🤘🏻😠
@@Chris-qi1uh I did the same thing, broke most of the bones in my right hand and had 2 fingers out of the cast. Bought a bass and learned this track, went back to guitar when I healed
so Jason composed both the bass and guitar riffs in this song.
Fav song from the black album. Jason Lives!
Just like many Metallica fans, I have been excited to hear this for decades. Thank you Jason for this awesome composition. Thank you Metallica for sharing it. Time froze for me when I read the video title.
Sounds like To Live is to Die...
Jason really loved that song.
And this... it's so perfect. I don't have words to say about it...
This song on 100% instrumental, would be so beautiful. We need this!
StateOfMercury did a “what if MFOM was an instrumental” a few weeks ago and it is great
Don’t forget Jason also helped write “where the Wild things are”. One of my favorites on reload.
Love Where the Wild Things Are, such a great song.
@@timdahl same.
Great, great song! So late 90 vibes. Ah, perhaps my favorite. Dunno why..
JN was credited on MFOM, WTWTA & BLACKENED.
One of the most eerie and original Metallica songs. Lyrics included.
Jason is a genius. My favorite song of Black Album, hands down.
I'm crying. This is beautiful! A masterpiece. Love you a lot Jason! It should've been an instrumental.
I agree
It could have easily been this instrumental then into the album version. It would have been amazing.
This was Jason's Orion...
Oh what could have been?
Don't worry Jason. We learned the Cunning Stunts version...I'll be tackling this one now.
There there
Perhaps they could have released it as an instrumental B-Side, but the finished song is a masterpiece, and the best song on the album. I could not imagine a world without the album version. That song has helped me through so many tough times that I would not want to begin thinking back on those dark times of my life. I need that song's existence.
Imagine if sometime James and co will get together with Jason and re-record MFOM as an instrumental with all the chord progressions and stuff... Damn that would be gorgeous.
“Hello again, My Friend Of Misery” is what it should be called
That would be amazing.
This probably the most feeling bassline i ever heard in my life. I fucking love Jason.
@@HankMardukas82 srry, sentimental is better for describe it, but the bass solo of the '97 wins it
Jason was upset his melody got simplified to what it’s like on the recording now, he felt his creativity was put down or disregarded when he was in band. Simply because guys could not accept him as replacement for Cliff, and they took that frustration on Jason. But, Metallica putting this out now, shows how the band learns from mistakes and gives credit when credit is due, they grow, they mature they learn they lament. I’m proud of Metallica putting this out and I’m sure this comes as a bit of a shocker to Jason Newsted!
They're not doing it for Jason, they're doing it to promote and sell the jubilee box set. And Jason's getting his share.
"Guys could not accept him as replacement for Cliff"...Yet they likewise had no problem accepting rob as his replacement. Hypocritical and discriminatory. Jason is the best bassist metallica ever had, and one of the greatest in the indutry up there with the likes of Billy Sheehan, etc
@@laqueefasteinberg4981 they grew up a lot by the time rob came, you cant just jump to conclusions that they were being discriminatory. Also they gave Jason the unboxing video as an apology.
@@isaacmorrow7077 as an apology?? The guy played bass on the record and was part of an era in the band that catapulted them to unprecedented success. He deserves it and the band are showing their appreciation towards his contribution
@@laqueefasteinberg4981 I don’t disagree with you, but James Hetfield at the time was young, he didn’t allow Jason to continue with his own project band at the time, they wanted Jason to fall in with Metallica only, they wanted Jason to not only play by the lines written, but also wanted him to improvise on stage, I guess just a clash of styles, Jason perhaps felt like he had big shoes to fill so he wanted to play like Cliff did but He reached for Cliff and James and Kirk wanted something different, not to try and copy Cliff as Cliff was the original, the one and only. Who knows, with Rob now I guess Metallica grew and learned.
This is the most soothing instrumental I have heard in all Metallica songs
I am crazy insane about Robert Trujillio but Jason had so much talent that I can't even go into how sad I was when he left the band. Metallica S&M. OMG.
I personally prefer Rob, but Jason left a great legacy to the band in the form of Blackened, this song, and Where the Wild Things Are plus Creeping Death backing vocals live.
Rob is more skilled, but Jason brought such an energy, add them together and they make cliff
I like them both and both are where they are supposed to be.
@@Tatorvision my only qualm is I wish they'd let Rob get funky, listen to some of the mid 90's Suicidal Tendencies stuff, or Infectious Grooves
@@dillonmacpherson3350. I totally agree with you. He is wasting a lot of his talent in Metallica 😊
This sounds amazing!, I love My Friend Of Misery as it is but I can hear why Jason thought it had the potential to be the next instrumental.
Been waiting to hear this all my life!!!
Same here
Me too!
Hehe, I've only been waiting for a few months 🤪
AJFA James: "I had to turn my back on Jason so he couldn't see what I was playing. Like, do your own thing, man!"
Black Album James: Follows entire rhythm Jason is playing for this song.
Mate I was just about to say the same thing😂😂
And James also hated Jason's original bass line for 'Enter Sandman' because it was too different from the riff.
So which is it, Jaymz?
I keep thinking the same thing.
@sluana1 he changed it quite a decent amount.
Agree with james, a bass player always should be an innovator not a follower of the guitar.
I saw Metallica live with Jason on the Black Album and Justice tours growing up. He played his ass off and was the perfect bass player to step in after Cliff's unfortunate death.
I can’t remember the last time I cried listening to a song, this is truly a masterpiece. It’s like a piece of me has finally been completed to hear what Jason was trying to reach out to the world.
It's understandable but sad that they were mourning because of Cliff and took it out on Jason. He was the best thing that happened to Metallica at that time. Terribly overlooked and underrated musician, solid dude to have in your band and a humble and modest guy. Nice that he finally gets some recoqnition he really deserved years ago.
Jason and Cliff were my Metallica
Jason said he wanted this song to be an instrumental, that would have been cool!
James and Lars made the right choice. As cool as this is and I do like it, It wouldn’t have fit well on the album as an instrumental. It’s also a lot of fans fav song on the album.
@@MeikelLohse How strange, imo that song is weak and should have stayed as an instrumental… the only good part in the song is Jason’s bass riff.
It be cool if Jason and Metallica got together for that project and record his instrumental🙌
I have wanted a longer version of this since listening to him play it years later for a interview. He only played a small portion. This is an absolute gift!
So cool. The Mexico City bass solo version is a perfect split between this and the actual refined song version. Hail Jason. 🤘🏻🔥
Yes
im glad that James and Lars are giving Jason a bit more credit these days, and the three seem to have made peace with what went down back in the day. I didn't grow up with Jason in Metallica, but I'll be damned if I don't love the guy.
This is probably the most beautiful and important piece on this channel.
This is just so beautiful, haunting, and melancholic. All at once.
Probably the closest thing we'll get to his original vision and recording of his song. But we'll see when the whole package comes out. Beautiful instrumentation
Lol no def this is the closest we’ll get. They’re not releasing multiple versions of my friend of misery
He used to play this version as his bass solo at concerts.
What do you mean “probably” this IS his original version and recording of this song! It’s from his riff tape for cryin out loud
@@jd0879 they’re releasing work in progresses though so we can see what happened with those
I'm 🤗😍💕🇱🇷🙏🎶
Jason was a beastt 💖
Should not Metallica invite Jason to re-record "My friend of Misery" as an Instrumental song, as a gesture of brotherhood
I wish they do it after all the comments here. They almost have no choices. The song is great. But just this alone is great. It needs the see the light of day. Plus Jason could still easily do it. It's not like it was fast and difficult. Just a beautiful piece on bass alone.
Jason played this version live at least once it’s on YT
How many of us SCREAMED! You just stood there screaming
Fearing no one was listening to you
Omg we finally get to hear this, I wish they had let Jason go with his ideas we missed so many great song because they didn’t
Yeah well the song that this went on ended up being really good because of this part. Loved the whale sounds and guitar solo that went with it too.
@@JohnnyInJapan yeah I agree too it’s still one of my favourites
Jason was no second to Cliff. This is a masterpiece.
You have seen Cliff ‘‘em all right? Or listened to the first three albums bass lines?
@@The_Last_Ninja Jason got mix raped on justice, creatively raped on black, and well load and reload are not worse because of the bass player.
@@RedmistAU But Jason is no Cliff Burton. Just listen to how much bass in the mix of the first three albums, it’s loud for a reason. The Major Rager was a genius, he was and always will be, the best bassist Metallica will ever have. It’s a real tragedy for what happened to him.
@@The_Last_Ninja the bass is not loud in RTL and is barely louder in MOP

It makes me cry for Jason...
I've been repeated this tapes for the last three days, there's something about it that just hit the deepest spot on my heart. Jason is a living legend.
Wow. Imagine what this could have developed into as an instrumental. Love how it turned out but it’s cool to imagine
I’d love to hear some of the riffs Jason made for the black album that weren’t used. But I know those probably won’t ever see the light of day unfortunately. This is a great treat though.
@sluana1 I didn't know Ampossible was made of riffs he wrote for Metallica. That's crazy
@sluana1 that’s awesome, Newsted Heavy Metal Music is amazing
@@danplaysguitar6706Plenty of Metallica songs were actually taken from the bandmates’ previous ones. Cliff’s classic bass solo on For Whom The Bell Tolls came from a piece he made for a high school talent show. I believe he took a few lines and riffs from when he was in Trauma as well.
Kirk also took plenty of riffs and solos from his time in Exodus as well.
Wow! This is a masterpiece. Don’t get me wrong, I like Rob, but I really miss Jason in Metallica. His presence, his intensity and his creativity.
I used to like ‚My Friend of Misery”, but after hearing this masterpiece, I think that they’ve ruined it by not leaving it as an instrumental. This should’ve been an album version -it really shows how creative Jason is.
Thats a weird statement,..saying you liked a song, but not anymore because of a demo tape.... you either like a song or you don't... that's how it works ..
My friend of misery was a perfect storm and the song was perfect for the black album as it was... Jason's instrumental idea was very good, but not executable on the album.

Jason is talking with us through all these years and with this music, its a true personal talk with close friend
FUCK JASON’s part in my friend of misery is a forever classic
It was the right decision to make My Friend Of Misery a proper song because it's that good. However, what they should have done is released an instrumental version of it with this majestic arrangement by Jason. Full of emotions.
