- Winter Camping - Polish Lavvu Hot Tent and Cooking
Winter Bushcraft in the Ontario Wilderness.
Hello and thank you for joining me for another overnight adventure / gear review.
In this video, I set out on a snowy day to enjoy some hot tent camping.
I bring with me my 3W hot tent stove.
A hot tent wood stove is a real game changer when it comes to winter survival. I am now convinced. I spent a very comfy night surrounded by wintry beauty.
The Polish Army Lavvu is perfect for hot tent winter camping.
In this video I show my favorite way how to set up a polish lavvu.
Suspended in midair it makes for a perfect winter tent.
I hope you enjoy this video and don't forget to comment.

I'm glad I ate before I watched this that dinner you cooked looked amazing and the sound of those sausage balls sizzling yummy 😋
HaHa. Glad you enjoyed the video. Eating fresh is the way to go. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned...
Good to know. I just ate a few minutes ago. 😜👍
Outstanding
Thank you!
Bless you, you set up the ponchos right side up. So many use them inside out.
The water repellancy works much better the right side out. I love this way of camping during winter. So far this is the best setup I have come across in terms of coziness.
they make a tipical YT mistake ... This setup is correct ..
Awesome meal and vidio koudos
Simple, fresh and delicious
Looked like alot of fun!
It was for sure. I'd say the setup is dialed in for a longer winter trip next season.
Thank you for contributing to my channel's latest awesome performance. It's great to see that someone out there really enjoys watching me have fun.
One by one, the restrictions in my area are finally lifting up. Great trips coming up very soon. Simply can't wait to share them with you.
Thank you again for subscribing and watching!!!
Thanks again!
I do like the style of your tent & camping gear. Beautiful environment to be off the grid in.
It's an awesome setup for winter camping. I can't wait to use it again and visit even more beautiful places this season. I've been planning some epic trips for this year. Thank you very much for watching and stay tuned.
Beautiful!!♥️ What a glorious place to be.🏕
With this setup, exploring the Backcountry in winter is no biggie. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank You very much for watching. What kind of videos are you mostly I retested in if you don't mind me asking?
Wilderness Bushcraft-
Autumn and winter are my favorite times of the year...I live in Texas and it already feels to hot to do much of anything.🤣 so I love watching videos about in fall and winter camping, pine trees, the forest, nature, minimal talking-this wine was perfect! Canada is beautiful. ♥️
Awesome video!!
It was a fun trip. Already can't wait for snow.
Thanks for the trip! Really enjoyed it.
Thank you very much for watching. Another backcountry trip video up very soon.

The p!ace you picked to overnight was beautiful. The lavvu looked very interesting to camp with especially in the fall and winter.
Thank you. It really was magical with all the snow falling around me. The lavvu turned out more comfortable than expected. With the setup I use I'm pretty confident longer trips are coming up this season.
Отличное видео! Спасибо!

Great video mate.
Thank you very much. Still learning.
Enjoyed the video. Very informative, and made me hungry! Thanks. I was chasing up on Lavvu’s which brought me here.
I'm dusting mine off for the season. Planning to use it heavily this year. It is by far the warmest setup I've tried to date.
YUUUUUMMMM ;)
Ohh it was so good. Everything tastes twice as good I the outdoors.

Really like them lavvu tents i dont have one but they looks awesome what a great and beautiful spot to camp out , that dinner looked amazing
I can't wait to use it again. We're not allowed to camp yet. The lavvu is a great setup for winter. Warm and cozy with the wood stove.

New sub here, I do primitive survival myself but I still enjoy watching
It's really an essential part of the outdoors. Some common sense with bush tricks are always good to know. Either for camping or a real survival situation. Thank you very much for watching. More trips coming very soon. Just waiting for the camping ban to lift.
Hi! Good video. I like this tent also. Sligh note. In polish we don't have and use that word: lavvu ;-). We speak Polish for it: pałatka (read: p.a.w.a.t.k.a, better check the pronunciation of a word on translator) Lavvu.. is a Sami tent, a kind of tipi, lower tipi, more resistant to strong wind and this is a word from the Sami language (Scandinavian Lapland). Funny journey of words, verbal/naming mess. We (Polish people) made the military raincoat which is called "pałatka" (two are made into a tent), and there is a word for it in English: tipi, tepee but almost everyone calls it: "lavvu" - Sams tent. So the name "polish lavuu" give's U polish sams tipi/tent ;-)
Wow. Thank you for all the info. I'm Polish myself. Living in Canada. Loving my pałatka.

New sub , great video , a light weight cot might help the back ache. love your set up, would love to see multi day camp out !!!!!!!
Awesome. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The back ache comes and goes. Been with me for years now. Regular exercises seem to work for me but I've had this issue for years. There will be plenty of multi day trips this year. I actually just got back from a 2 day trip. Video on that coming out very soon. Thank you very much for watching my friend.
Love this film. I have a Lavvu here in the UK and have just kitted it out over the past year with a small stainless steel stove and a very small low camp bed which massively helps with my bad back! I also have a small packaway chair for times when I need to sit more comfortably. Never a light weight option but all packs in my truck and is certainly walkable into a good location. A small four wheel garden truck helps to tow it all into the woods! I also solved the issue of being able to quickly close or open the tent without having to use the buttons, (or the trouble of sewing in a full length zip). I bought, very cheaply, a stack of large very lightweight stainless steel bulldog clips, used to make clip boards. (Amazon). Great quality with powerful springs. They are so easy to use to pinch together the sections of flap on the 'door'. If I need to get out quickly in a fire emergency, they just ping off under pressure or I can just remove those I need to get out for a pee in the night! I have also found that a third single section of Lavvu ( I am lucky to have two complete tents), added to the top and slewed over the same sleeve hole where the chimney extends, and then supported round on extra poles, makes a fantastic extra porch area to sit under. It keeps all the weather off while the door is open and I can cook in all weathers with no problem. The clips can also be used to hold the door section back and attached to the porch roof edge, making a nice wind proof wall. Please let me know the make of your wonderful wool smock!! Where can I get one? I am desperate to find exactly that type but have had no luck so far. Any info on getting hold of one like that would be wonderful!
Sounds like quite the outfit for the lavvu. I also purchased multiple ponchos thinking of expanding it in the future. Really have to try the porch area setup you mentioned. I believe I've seen someone use it this way somewhere on UA-cam. My lavvu is just standard. No add ons other than the stove and tent protector. The low lying cot may be a good idea for me as well. I have a lower back issue for 14 years now and I feel it every time I use the lavvu. I'm thinking of reinforcing the tie off points as I ripped one of the rings while camping last winter. Can't wait to use it again. The bugs have been so bad this year that I opted for a bug screened shelter for the time being.
I found my anorak on a US based website. I believe they make every jacket once ordered.
Here is the link to the store I got it from: lrbushcraft.com/lester-river-bushcraft-100-wool-olive-green-boreal-shirt-anorak/
It's warm. Does not dirty easy and also way more fire retardant than my other gear. Worth the price for sure.
Thank you very much for watching. I'm actually just about to finish a work project and finally have some time off. Heading out to Lake Superior area of Ontario. It should be great. Stay tuned.
@@WildernessBushcraft Thanks so much for the reply! Great to hear of your adventures.
I have a major lower back issue from many years ago and have also had a neck injury in the past so have to be very careful of my spine and skeleton! The joys of getting older too! I have been out in my open canoe recently here on the local river, and combined with messing about bent over for too long in the Lavvu, playing around with different configurations in my back garden, have been suffering again! The camp bed is a very recent addition and I managed to pick up an ex-display model - the last available in the store, for an absolute steal! It has made a massive difference. It is a tight fit but it does just fit and means I can stay very comfortable in the Lavvu. Thanks so much for the link to the Smock! I will follow up and see if I can get one made. Fingers crossed! It looks fab and is exactly what I have been trying to find for several years. No one in the UK makes them and it is such a shame as there are many Bushcrafter's and wild campers here who would love them. Good luck with your next trip and hope you are managing to stay safe and well over there. Things here are still pretty weird and despite some restrictions being lifted to try and get the economy working and get people out and about, we are still in a very dangerous period and I think it is way too soon to expect anything like normal life.
Fortunately, solo Bushcraft trips are possible! Thanks again and all the best.
The back pains you describe sound a lot like mine. That cot is definitely looking into. I've had a friend purchase one and feature it in their video. Here is a link to that. It's a setup just like mine, with the cot inside. Have a look. ua-cam.com/video/IekEZVFxhnw/v-deo.html I believe I may have contributed to the purchase of the tent protector on that one...
It's a sleek and light way setup. Fits in a backpack. So happy with the purchase.
The things over here are pretty much the same. We have some people on bicycles blocking traffic. Ninjas running around everywhere. A lot of finger pointing and a good dose of jealous anger.
We will get through this. We are after all in this together. Interestingly, it is wonderful to see the world stand up together and work on the same goals for once. I'm sure there is good in all of this. We are just not seeing it yet...
Stay happy and safe my friend.
P.S. When the news gets too morbid, turn it off. Time for a comedy.
@@WildernessBushcraft Great to hear from you. Yes, despite the terrible attrition and worrying nature to this whole pandemic, there are many heart warming stories to find and so much good being done by many people. The immediate sense of community which flourished here in many areas across the country was amazing to see. The support for the NHS workers who were under so much intense pressure and working so hard to save lives was fantastic. It must have be the most stressful job in the world to be on very long shifts, covered from head to toe in PPE and risking your life to try and save those who have been just so terribly ill. Of course we have, as with every other nation, lost a lot of people and many doctors and nurses among them.Tragic. It would be a good time for the world to take the opportunity to re-write a few rule books on how we all get along.....I fear it will be a missed opportunity in the long run and we will 'revert to type' at the soonest opportunity. Hey ho. In other more cheerful news....I went ahead and invested and ordered a Lester River wool smock! It is being shipped on Monday apparently!! It will take a while to arrive but I am very excited! Thanks for your help with that. I love the link to the other Lavvu film. The set up is very similar other than my stove is a small stainless steel unit, so much heavier than titanium. Maybe one day I will up-grade. The cot is almost identical to the ex-display one I bought made by a company called OEX. The down side for me is it is BRIGHT RED! I would have preferred something a bit more subtle, so that green one looks lovely. Thanks again and have fun out there. Stay safe.
Yeaaa nice camp so simple n Snowy enjoy it for how long? N good too u shows in video about the view where u camp

@didier trekkeur Things are finally starting to slowly reopen on this end of the ocean. Provincial parks are about to allow daytime use. Still no overnighters. No matter I will make use of what they allow for now. So excited.
Maybe those bugs were from the ground and released once iy melted.I think a budget tarp to the ground is an essential piece of kit.
That's correct. It was due to the mild temperatures that morning. Early hatch. Less bugs in the spring, 🙂
Would love to know who makes the stove, and the cookware looked pretty efficient, too. Nicely done!
The stove is made by 3W. Wild Wild West. Thank you for watching.
Where can i find the isolatorflue for the stove? I only have the normal wood stove from 3w
I found it on a site from Europe. Little costly but very lightweight and does the job of protecting the canvas really well. The site if packrat sveridge or something along those lines. Look in the tent section.
Was that humming from the power lines!!? Could you hear it while standing there? Loved the video. What time of year was it and temp outside over night?
Cheers from Ottawa.
The sizzle of the heavy snow hitting the high voltage wires was definitely noticeable. However it sounded more like a sizzle versus the humm in the video. I believe the humm was created by the microphone itself reacting to the magnetic field. Crazy. Totally unnoticeable during a nice day.
Great video, thanks for sharing! A couple of questions, what kind of stove were you using and, where did you get it? Also, where did you get the Lavvu and, what size is it?
I got the stove from Luxe Outdoor website. A little on the flimsy side. Hence looking into buying a Pomoly stove. Same size just more durable in my opinion. The tent is a Polish army poncho also called the pałatka. Size 3. 2 of them make a tent like mine. Awesome for winter
im from Poland, and its common here while its like -8C in winter, but the snow still doesnt exist lol
Ontario got a lot of snow this year. The Great Lakes are flooding again due to the spring snow melt.
Great video! How do you rate the 3W stove overall? How long of burn time do you get? How hot was then Lavvu??
I'd give it a A+ for nice design, low weight and functionality. A little flimsy but that comes with the low weight design. Overall the stove rocks. Dampened properly with larger hard wood inside I get about 4 hours of solid burn and another couple of hours of warmth from the coals. I got to 30C inside the Lavvu with the temperatures outside at -14C Cant
Thanks for the video. Do you think two smaller folk with the stove and gear could fit inside this lavvu (size 2) comfortably or would it be a squeeze?
I have a size 3 and solo with the stove was comfortable. Two people without the stove is no problem. The stove however needs that extra space for safety so it would be a very tight squeeze indeed.
@@WildernessBushcraft Thanks very much for your reply. I'll consider several other options then. Appreciate the video!
great video!...may I ask where you bought the pipe insulator?.......thank you...
this happens to be the most popular comment. I need to add it to the description...
The pipe insulator was purchased from a European website called Packraft Sverige and I'm pretty sure I made their sales go up this year. lol
The insulator works great for this application. Light weight and collapsible down to a smaller size.
Thank you very much for watching!!!
@@WildernessBushcraft great!....thank you very much
My pleasure.
Great video! That protector/sleeve that goes around the stove pipe- where is that from? Just what I've been looking for
I got it from a European website Packraft Sverige. Works really well and weighs next to nothing
I got it from a website called Packraft Sverige.
It's called the 'Winnerwell Titanium Tent Protector'
Yep. I love mine
I don’t understand why the tent chimney opening doesn’t get hot or catch fire. If the stove pipe proper is attached to the two supporting rings, the supporting rings are attached to the big circular tube which goes through the exhaust hole of the tent , heat transfer from the stove pipe to the support rings to the big circular tube to the tent seems logical to me. Are these items made of none flammable material? I’ve seen some tent pipes that were bright red from heat. Good vid, thanks for posting.
The diameter of the tent protector allows for a 1.5 inch void around the pipe. The protector does in fact get hot but cold enough to handle by hand. The stove, pipe and protector are all made out of titanium. I normally attempt keeping the flames in the box by dampening the flue. The pipe never has a chance of glowing red hot this way. Wide open, any wood stove is a potential fire hazard in a small setup like this. Worked so well however.
Thank you very much for watching.
Hi. What is the name of the stove you are using in this video? Where is it available? I saw something on Amazon that looked similar- could it be where you found yours.
Many thanks

I found it on Luxe hiking gear website. It's called the 3W Stove or WWW Stove
I enjoyed your video . Am curious as to where you got the stove pipe/ tent shield ??
Ordered it from a European website. Packraft sverige. Tent protector I think they called it. Pricy but works like a charm and weighs next to nothing.
Thanks for watching.
Great setup! Been looking for a titanium tent protector for quite awhile...Where did you find yours?
It was a Sweedish website called Packraft Sverige. It can be purchased from their store. Used it only once so far but it performed great for me so far. It's a relief knowing that if the pipe gets really hot while I'm sleeping, there is a buffer of protection between me and being in a bonfire.

Just seen the price of the tent protector. I didn't know it existed, until now. I made my own using titanium from eBay for my lavvu. About 90% cheaper.
Always a great idea to DIY.
Where can one obtain the pipe heat shield for your stove pipe?
Thx smc
i picked up mine from a european website Packraft Sverige. Little pricey but fits and works very well.
Looks like Ardbeg Ontario
It's closer to Parry Sound but the forest looks very similar. Thank you very much for watching.
I have the same stove and am considering cutting the chimney down, also how do you secure the chimney in high wind?
I would leave it the original length. Never know when you'll need it. I use a rope attached to the very top of the pipe. Tied between a tree and the main support/ridge line.
@@WildernessBushcraft where can I get that stove? Could you send a link
I got it from Luxe Outdoors website. It's the 3W Stove.
@@WildernessBushcraft thanks mate
Nice set up you have there:) question? Does it matter which way the ponchos are facing inward and outward? It looks like the inside of your ponchos is facing the element (snow). Is there an advantage with this? Just curious. 😊 ty.
The inside of the poncho has an extra layer or the canvas to cover and insulate the shoulders. This hangs on the inside and looks a little odd when you look up but this is the way to set it up. I use the hoodie pull string to hang lights. Hard to call it an advantage but it is worn this way on regular basis. The insulating layer to the inside
@@WildernessBushcraft ah! Makes sense! Thank you! 👍

Glad I could help. Have fun camping
boy..., I hope you don get a storm, one of this days. Will make those trees shake, your unstable pipe to fall, and hopefully you don have a widow too. But you are friendly and one can learn a lot with you.
Just wandering if some tents are not a bit more comfy and lighter to carry, than those two stitched buggers (I have one).
lol I know exactly what you mean by unstable. I started to tie the top portion of the pipe a while back. Learned that valuable lesson during strong winds. Definitely adds a measure of safety to it. It was just way too flimsy otherwise. The poncho setup I use impressed me with one thing above all other tents. The canvas kept more heat in and the smaller space was easier to heat. I own a few nylon and silnylon alternatives to this one and they all lose their heat very quickly. This setup however keeps me warm all night with the stove in there. Absolutely love my lavvu. It's not my go to for summer time camping due to the abundance of mosquitoes and flies in my area but I look forward to using it all summer.
Definitely heavier but well worth the extra weight.
What snowpants are those?
They're my Fjalravens.nit really snow pants. They're outdoor pants.

The stove I use comes with a built in spark arrestor and damper. The only thing to really watch out for is the fast that if you leave the damper open fully, eventually your titanium pipe will collapse due to temperature differences. No issue with sparks however.
