This guy is on the "most underrated guitarists" list. One of the best metal guitarists on the metal scene, in my opinion. The approach he makes to solos astonishes me, specially because the type of music the band plays...he can fit melodies and phases that shouldn't work with this kind of music, but he is still able to make it work.
i dont even know any guitar magazines - if they ignore one of the most brilliant guitarists of the new century, well ignore them :) Per Nilsson is the influence itself.
dude you are freaking awesome, I can't stop listening at your solos, I'm trying to catch a few things from you, your note choice is amazing. Thank you for being such a great player.
Wow. The Slaves to the Subliminal chorus part... that should have been higher in the mix. Before I saw this, I had never actually heard it. And that's a shame. Absolutely beautiful.
@Splintervention Yes it was already taken out when I got the guitar (as a gift from Jonas Kjellgren), and since I pretty much NEVER use the neck pup in Scar Symmetry, I never bothered installing a new one
Im totally in awe of your playing... in my opinion you have a unique phrasing thats really strange. But at the same time your playing is as melodic and tuneful as it gets, and the chops :D! ... totally inspired right now, see you at the london show!
I will never understand why Per Nilsson is not considered among the modern metal elite guitarists. He has such an original style blending neoclassical and fusion influences. It really is ashame that those hacks in Suicide Silence get an entire column in Guitar World and this guy seems to only recently be getting a mild amount of attention.
@christianmetal17 yeah it does...but it's better to work on your skip picking more...anyways there's a DVD from licklibrary devoted for that technique only...just search "lick library hybrid picking"...or i think if you searched "hybrid picking" here on youtube you will find some informative videos...good luck learning that
question, whats w the piece of tape on the neck humbucker, its not the first time i see that, i remember seeing steve vai with that on one of his guitars
Can someone tell me which Scar Symmetry song the solo from the very beginning (the intro) to this video is from? Sorry, I'm a scar symmetry n00b but I love that solo
@ScarGuitar well yea that's what I meant, but I dont exactly remember on which comment you were replying to. But I guess what I said was, many people do only copy your style of playing, you know, meshuggah-esk rhythm guitar and above it a solo in the same kind of 'colour' you use, if you know what I mean. And yea I agree with you, you're in trouble if you do that ( if you are per nilsson, love your music man :D )
I've always thought Scar Symmetry has their own unique guitar sound. Hats off to this man! Wonder where his influences come from? There's something about the tapping style that feels completely new that I can only hear from Scar Symmetry. Someone agree?
@khakkhanet1 and @TechcorelsSexy its an RG7420. and Tech, that dude said an rg7620 but hes wrong. the 7620 has a lo-pro edge trem, the 7420 has a lo-TRS (which this guitar has, and the TRS is shit, so he wouldnt put it into a lo-pro)
Most likely because it gives a boomy or a muddy low end which he doesn't like. It's usually easier to get that tight mid-range tone with the bridge pickup than the neck pickup.
I'm looking to buy a 7 string and I just can not get any straight answers from ANYONE. I'm willing to spend around $700 US. I'm very interested in the Ibanez 7 strings but there are so many models. Would you recommend the model you are using for someone who has no experience with 7 string guitars?
@ScarGuitar But is it the same kind of 'stealing' as what I meant, I can hear different influences, but it's not mimicing one particular band or musician, or is it?

I've always described his guitar playing as "intergalactic" or "cosmic"
His scales remind me of space.
Per must listen to alot of classic rock
Love the way the low notes sound @2:06, incredible sound.
Goddamn that dude can write a solo.
Awesome video. Never realized how much Per uses hybrid picking. Looking forward to part II.
That "Slaves to the Subliminal" guitar work is beautiful! Man this is great stuff
God, I love how cool he is.
0:35 *shreds for a few seconds*
"...yeah, that one."
I wish someday Per Nilsson and Andy James makes a song together. They're like twins :D
Per and Andy will be performing guest solos in the same song on our new album later this year ;)
BloodshotDawnUK Wow! :D
per is andy james older version
Andy James' playing is rudimentary in comparison.
Oh God, I love Scar Symmetry and Per Nilsson.
Happy birthday Per!
i dont even know any guitar magazines - if they ignore one of the most brilliant guitarists of the new century, well ignore them :)
Per Nilsson is the influence itself.
Thank You Andy James for putting this link on your channel
PER is SICK !!!
tasty tone from the bridge pickup
LOVE this band right now... holographic universe... best album ever
i love all of his songs.....with christian alvestam on vocals
dude you are freaking awesome, I can't stop listening at your solos, I'm trying to catch a few things from you, your note choice is amazing. Thank you for being such a great player.
Per Nilsson is a guitar god!!!! I love Scar Symmetry... yeah!!!
Wow. The Slaves to the Subliminal chorus part... that should have been higher in the mix. Before I saw this, I had never actually heard it. And that's a shame. Absolutely beautiful.
Per is a great player and amazing person as well!
@Splintervention
Yes it was already taken out when I got the guitar (as a gift from Jonas Kjellgren), and since I pretty much NEVER use the neck pup in Scar Symmetry, I never bothered installing a new one
Huge amount of respect for your playing and ability!!!!!
I once had a conversation with Per on facebook when he was completely pissed. Absolutely hilarious dude :L
@ivorwww Its a old rg7620. Pre prestige made in japan 7 string ibanez from the 90's
@TahaNasserTV
it's from "Ghost Prototipe I- Measurment of thought"- definitelly.
Wow. I hear his phrasing in Marco sfogli's playing.
@IncognitoFloyd the third from the left is Robin from How I met your mother!!!!
@ImaDjentleman yeah...and that explains why he removed the pick-up selectro too ..i like how simple he is :)
@TahaNasserTV Np man thats one of my favorite solos by him!
@BradSkynet It's called hybrid picking, it's a technique
Im totally in awe of your playing... in my opinion you have a unique phrasing thats really strange. But at the same time your playing is as melodic and tuneful as it gets, and the chops :D! ... totally inspired right now, see you at the london show!
How did he get that lead tone without a neck pickup? Talent.
Finally a video of him explaining shit! He has a lot to explain.
@Guitarmajster Yea that's goot...But also EVH 1976...;-) Ibanez Destroyer with no neck pick up, long long time ago. Per rocks!
That guy is totally underrated... I Feel sad about that...
Andy James and Per Nilsson look like twins. God-like both of them.
0:07 I'm gonna start going to Scar Symmetry shows a bit more...
scar symmetry shows are not like that a whole lot
I bet they were when Christian was still in the band
@TahaNasserTV Noumenon and Phenomenon!
the ibanez premium line is pretty good for the price i think....and they look fucking awesome
this guy is a badass. Well done
@ultrazoidxxx it's Noumenon and Phenomenon
per nilsson = guitar god
@MorganRNReid but the best guitar solos are on Symmetric in Design ;-)
LOVE Pers guitar solos and playing! Not a huge SS fan but fk it.
This isn't a class. This is just Per showing that he is better than us.
@christianmetal17 yeah it does...but it's better to work on your skip picking more...anyways there's a DVD from licklibrary devoted for that technique only...just search "lick library hybrid picking"...or i think if you searched "hybrid picking" here on youtube you will find some informative videos...good luck learning that
I like a old beat up modern guitar.
First solo of Prism and Gate plz!
@ArtificialFlavaFTB2 thanks dude!
DUDE Saw some LIVE!!! He is a fucking GOD!
THAT is exactly what it sounds like. Especially the intro solo and the solo of ''Artificial Sun Projection''. ...lml...
question, whats w the piece of tape on the neck humbucker, its not the first time i see that, i remember seeing steve vai with that on one of his guitars
I'm in love...
Can someone tell me which Scar Symmetry song the solo from the very beginning (the intro) to this video is from? Sorry, I'm a scar symmetry n00b but I love that solo
@ShredLady cool someone said its from Noumenon and Phenomenon - awesome song - ridiculous facial expressions in the video aside!
That tone is fucking intense.
Wonder what amp he's playing through ... Love The Tone !!!
what guitar is that? an rg7620?
I typo'd when I said then. I meant to say neck pickup, and I don't know many people that use neck. This is what happens when you're tired kids...
Perkele Nilsson
@hjeb1986 he's not covering it...it's removed...he only plays with the bridge pick-up i think
I think it's an RG7420. I have one and it's identical, even the colour.
Per Nilsson and Scar Symmetry are Swedish, if that's what you are asking.
Part 2?
@christianmetal17 you mean hybrid picking ?
@ScarGuitar well yea that's what I meant, but I dont exactly remember on which comment you were replying to. But I guess what I said was, many people do only copy your style of playing, you know, meshuggah-esk rhythm guitar and above it a solo in the same kind of 'colour' you use, if you know what I mean. And yea I agree with you, you're in trouble if you do that ( if you are per nilsson, love your music man :D )
whats the name of the song in the beginning?
Hi Per, great lesson! very useful! what pick up did you use in this video? sounds tight as hell
Hey Per, is that a rg7620 ?
how is tuned the guitar!?
@Spermwhales93
Nah I wasn't that pissed, I did have a nice buzz going though
Agreed
Is the neck pickup taken out?
I bought it but didnt find where to log on. anyone knows here where can I find the tabs?
Why did he remove the Neck-Pickup?
Is there any reason for that?
In an interview he said he never uses it. Weird.
why he dosnt use his neck pick up?
Most likely because it gives a boomy or a muddy low end which he doesn't like. It's usually easier to get that tight mid-range tone with the bridge pickup than the neck pickup.
I'm looking to buy a 7 string and I just can not get any straight answers from ANYONE. I'm willing to spend around $700 US. I'm very interested in the Ibanez 7 strings but there are so many models. Would you recommend the model you are using for someone who has no experience with 7 string guitars?
god whats the song in the beginning its driving me nuts that I dont remember what it is!
@ScarGuitar But is it the same kind of 'stealing' as what I meant, I can hear different influences, but it's not mimicing one particular band or musician, or is it?
hi dude, give a look to schecter 7 strings, very good guitar. if you want an ibanez, try to find the rgd2121z, great guitar, is use it in my video
@TechcoreIsSexy
it is RG 7620
the name of the first song?
@IncognitoFloyd Doesn't that look an awful lot like Robin from How I Met Your Mother?
He removed his neck pickup?
which Ibanez is that
what's the reason for taking out the pickup out of the guitar and leave it like that?? I'm curious does it make any difference ?
The Silence of Time changes the tone
Mojo.
his distortion and compression is on 11, what tone do you talking about?
in the end they said stay tuned, how did they know
@IncognitoFloyd I'd do that into next year.
andy is at the level where it's just preference. He could certainly hold his own against any guitarist on the planet. Including Per.
Andy James, is that you? O.o
2:04 wow
i would get a seven string guitar just for this band
per would smoke andy. I love andy but per is from another planet. Very holdsworthian which makes him sick sounding.
song in the beggining 00:00-00:30???
How I Met Your Mother? if so, there's two of them.
I thought I was the only one to notice this! Hahaha
