Makes it hard to argue the price of a Porsche is too high, relative to its competitors. 50 max launches in a row would surely break almost any car let alone one that is pushing the boundaries of engineering. The notion of this test is almost absurd. The fact that the car did it no problem is incredible.
But apparently I'm the only one that noticed the counter went from 45 straight to 50 with no video skips inbetween and no other launches. That would make... 46, not 50... xD HOWEVER... I agree with your statement (and his) that the test is silly and absurd. ... but I'd do it, just to see if it could be done xD As much as I love Porsche though... I still wouldn't choose a fine Porsche over a fine Jeep. :P I just can't turn down a good Jeep Wrangler, even for one of these. xD
Mitch Watts 1) Actually, it was 61 launches. 2) Silly and absurd? Yep, that's right up your alley. 3) Fine/good/nice Jeep Wrangler? Best of luck with that search !!!
Bossrah Apparently you are not familiar with how to open your eyes and pay attention to a video. Even seamlessly, there were no differences in the END of launch 46, to the beginning of launch 50, even subtly. Now please... pay attention. You might learn a thing or two. :D
What is amazing to me is that other cars can't do this. For too long, too many manufactures have been dropping huge engines into cars to get hero hp numbers that are meaningless because the power is unusable. Well done Porsche.
Corvettes aren't unreliable. But a Porsche a Porsche. It isn't a old school 16v v8. Its an high-end flat 6. Learn how to build perfect cars and come back after u've done your homework. A Z06 is just a good car a 911 is perfect.
Wild Cat Whoa! That, I did not know. I just love the way Porsche claims figures. Even in a worst case scenario, it would be faster than you'd expect. Nissan on the other hand...
+Wild Cat No, i have a 911 991 Turbo S and under all weather conditions 2.6 was the best to reach. I also have a 997 with 620 BHp by chip and he does also not run faster than 2.6 sec.. At that numbers you will need verry soft rubber tires to deliver the speed, but they are actually not available and must pe produced extra for this. BTW below 15° the cars is at 2.6 sec. and above 30° the car is at ca. 3 sec. so the Porsche claim is for usual temperature and altitude. At 0° thw car could have the most performance, bu the tire grip is bad, so ca. 12° has the best performace with usual summer tires.
the only car that has the same design in 2014 as in 1963 and still is the perfect sportcar. speed, acceleration, handling, quality, eveything is perfect.
+Justus Raw As an owner of two 991s (turbo cab and gts cab) and two '89 turbo cabs I can tell you now that the 930s are the most fun cars to drive on the road. Of course their turbo lag is unbelievable, but that gives them character. I wouldn't describe either of them to be sketchy, but they do like to bump-steer. 911s are the best; they can't be beaten.
Charlie Long Sketchy and fun are the same thing for some people... i can only base my comment on what my dad told me about the 930 he used to own. Maybe he is just exaggerating a bit :D
Wrong. All it takes is a cursory glance into the myriad common yet extensive problems Porsches made in the last 20 years have given their owners to see that.
Juzh123 Well, they are replacing all of the GT3 engines free of charge. Oops. Remember, Porsche pushes engineering to the very limits of physics. So, yeah, they will encounter problems from time to time (need I tell 996 owners about the rear main seal failures). But still, good cars.
The magazine started all the 0-60 Times where between 2.6-2.8 seconds. They also said they actually did 61 launches. Doing one launch on the gt-r voids the warranty. Great engineering!
No Problems - i drive 911 Turbos since 1992 and they just need good oil and propper fuel - no problems, even if you drive them hard, bcs. the cars are made for this and theirefor you pay the price. You just have to wait until the temperature is right and than you can kick the car as you want, the only expense are the Porsche fitting tires.
mcdonaldm73 When I'm a millionaire I'm going to ask myself, do I buy the Porsche or do I buy the Corvette ? Then I'm going to piss myself laughing as I walk into the Porsche dealer.
They are great drivers cars, but just make sure it's a second car, you don't want to be relying on it as your daily driver because it'll be spending a lot of time at the dealers getting fixed, and dump it on someone else before the warranty expires.
Bryan Doherty No, I'm a family man so both out of my price range at the moment and no way I could justify it - maybe when the kids grow up and leave home - for now I have to make do with a 4 door (with 400bhp, so it's still quite fun). My business partner has one, but he only does a few thousand km's in it a year, so it doesn't cause him any problems, but I've read of a lot of people having issues particularly with the earlier 991 911's when trying to use them as a daily driver - mostly electrical gremlins (though you may have seen the report about some models catching fire due to faulty gudgeon pins or something - pretty sure they have that sorted now) - I think they have just gotten so complex that Porsche are having problems with QC on them - no doubt they will sort it out in time - but then the next model will come out and it'll start again.
Well 400hp isn't anything to laugh at. Yea the GT3s catching on fire, they have that fixed. So it's probably wise to have it as a second car then, I'll probably something like a 3-series or another sports sedan to daily then. Well thank you for the advice, if I ever get one you saved me headache and money
the video is dedicated to all those who are complaining about the 911s price or Porsche`s pricing in general. do this to a GT-R and it will will break down. Put a 458 italia on the Nordschleife a dozen times in a row and it will overheat, break down or whatever, in contrast to a 911. A Porsche is NOT expensive, it is the best reliable sportscar you can get for the money, as simple as that.
For my money, I'd still have the new 911 GT3. Yes it may have "only" 475 hp, but that's from a naturally-aspirated 3.8L H6. And the PDK in the GT3 has the cool feature where if one pulls back on both paddles at the same time, it's like putting the clutch in, and letting go is like dropping the clutch, for some Hooligan driving action. On regular paddle shift cars, doing that would just put the car into neutral. I'm surprised makers of dual-clutch cars haven't adopted that little, but superfun change. Even Porsche hasn't with their other PDK cars. And the GT3's stick now works like a proper sequential 'box's shifter: Pull back for an upshift and push forward for a downshift. And I've owned turbocharged cars, supercharged cars...but there is nothing like the sound and pull of a high-powered naturally-aspirated car. Especially straight 6's and H6's. Just my ever humble opinion.
Let me check that ... it will go into neutral when I pull both levers at the same time ... but never tried to rev it and put it back into gear for a 'burnout'.
goguhu Yeah, all other paddle shift cars would just go into neutral if someone pulls back on both paddles at the same time, but try it at speed. I saw a whole video where a Porsche factory guy talks about it. And it's only in the GT3. The PDK in the other cars is just like it was before. Like try it at low revs in second gear, build up some revs, let go, and see if you can get some donuts going. Or read the manual lol. It probably says exactly how it functions.
Sandra Rios I'm quite sure I did make it to work int the 991 C4S, but I was not able to make it work in the 991 TS, I did not try to do a burnout though ... I'll put it on my list of stuff to try out :) Might be that this function got changed at some point in time (or that the TS produce too much torque and might shred the gearbox if you did that).
goguhu Yeah, as far as I know, they only made those tweaks to the PDK in the GT3 so that you can pull back on the paddles at any time, which again would be like putting the clutch in, and then letting go to "drop the clutch." Like a clutch kick to get a drift started-type situation.
Well it has a limited amount of launches though... Afterwards Porsche doesn't guarantee that it will still work as the first time. That number is 2000 launches!!!
TheArfdog Its all up to the dealer really. But Porsche gives you their blessing to launch the hell out of it. If anything fails during the power train warranty it will be covered, they won't deny it from launch control usage. If you feel the effectiveness of launch control is diminished at all, i'm saying you could probably complain about it and get the clutches replaced. Either way, I wouldnt ever worry about it, the PDK is pretty solid from what I've seen.
Ian Sherman The way it should be. If they offer up a function, they as the manufacturer should back it up. If it's really all that great, it should be as durable as the rest of the car.
Such a beautiful simple in appearance vehicle with and awesome engine to back up the good looks. What more could one want in a car for weekend fun or shredding the backroads, this car has it all and I want one for daily driver.
What if this car had been a Nissan G-TR? well, maybe you would have not stood at the end of the video alive. This shows pure GERMAN technology. Pure passion through cars. But I have to admit that at the lunch ·30, I was starting to get uncomfortable.
Why all the hostility towards the GT-R? People, relax, they are both awesome cars lol. You guys are just as bad as the fanboys you ridicule. By the way, I want to clarify some things about the GT-R, because there is a swarm of misinformation regarding their transmissions. - Launching the GT-R does NOT void the warranty anymore. This has been fixed since 2010. - The 'glass transmissions' spoken of are the 2008 GT-R, which is 6 years old now. They are now much stronger. - Instead of voiding the warranty, launch control allowed for 4 consecutive launches, and is then locked out for 1.5 miles of driving. You can then launch it another 4 times. Unless you're launching your GT-R like the guy is in this Porsche, that's insignificant.
Wow 2.6. I've never been a huge fans of Porsche, but I do know that their cars are one of the few sports cars that can take extreme punishment over and over.
I have a 2019 turbo and ferrari 458. I'd never take the horse to track day in the summer. Porsche is the most reliable exotic....yes....exotic...out there.
I remember watching this video many years ago when the car just came out. Curious as to where this car is now after all these years, and all of those hard launches.
***** No the Ferrari would break down after the 20 start - that my comon eperience with that cars. The Ferrari is for sunday, the 911 is for every da yuse.
Bahahaha that's amazing and the look on his face every time he launched was priceless! I've got a 996TT no launch control not as robust as the 2014 but even if it was I doubt I would ever torture test my own car like that! That being said it's great to see how reliable Porsche is I doubt very much that any other car manufacture could do the same test without breaking down or like he said going into limp mode! This video made me laugh absolutely amazing:)
Ladies and Gentlemen, you have just witness what it is like to have too much fun.. LoL Porsche, "the other car companies just can't make' em like this... "
"You get what you pay for." Porsche built their reputation through endurance races like Le Man and Daytona 24 hour races. Probably the only true super car manufacturer if you believe being able to drive a vehicle with such capabilities everyday all year round is what makes it really super. I thought they would break it.
Great video...he's like a kid on a go cart. I wonder if Carfax will start keeping tabs on how many times owners use launch control as a heads up to the new owner :)
I do launch control frequently in my base 2022 911 (992) with Sport Chrono. In normal and Sport mode, it revs to 4k RPM before launching, in Sport Plus mode it revs to 5k RPM before launching. It is the exact same PDK transmission that they put in the Turbo's and GT3 variants. Those cars have way more HP and torque than a base 911, so I figure I can launch it as much as I want. The tire smell is magnificent!
Stig Msr well this video at least proves u can launch it 10 times without stopping. i mean heck, dude just launched, stopped for 2 seconds, then literally launched again without his hands on the steering wheel. if i do that in my 718, i dont think it would survive 3 runs in a row
uhm because your micra doesn't make over FIVE HUNDRED HORSEPOWER pushed to all four wheels. but you drive a micra so you probably don't understand car stuff lol
I bet that having sex with a women isn't the same after having this much fun with the 911 Turbo S. PS By the expression on your face, I have come to this conclusion.
Wow, that's an impressive transmission! I did launch control 8 times within a two hour period when I brought my 2013 Audi S4 (dual clutch auto) to an 1/8th mile drag race event and thought that was an impressive feat of engineering, but Porsche gets a gold star for this one. Well done Porsche! For the nerds out there.... the difference between my fastest and slowest 1/8th mile time was 0.077 seconds. That's 8 runs. These launch control equipped dual clutch transmissions are supremely consistent and (sadly) require no skill whatsoever.
If I race a focus st and I beat him in my Brz. It is not because my car is faster. It is because I am a better driver than him. Launch control takes all the skill out of drag Raceing. Still a wonderful piece of technology.
Derek Ferrell Good point Derick. I know when to back off. The ST driver so confident I had to do it. I never take on the Civic Si drivers. They snap off shifts like clockwork. Most of the time I drive it like an economy car and enjoy 30+ MPG. At least until the road gets twisty.
wow WTF is this, how this is even possible?? On the first try doing lunch control on my BMW E60 M5 I broke the clutch :(( Sold the car and got my self my dream machine BMW E93 M3 and I NEVER attempt lunch control since I purchased, easy way to say I am afraid I will brake it again, even DCT is perfect compare to old SMG. I hate Porsche, and I think Porsche's are pricey pumped up VW Beetle's with a spoiler. Well done Porsche I think this is pushing the boundaries of engineering. In the future I just may buy one, I think this is the answer, but I will have to sell my organ parts to afford one.
monkeypainter808 I know you can ask to remove it and leave the back blank but not sure if you can ask for just the older style... i could be wrong though.
There're a lot of wicked cars out there, but when somebody asks which I'd buy if I won the lottery & they want a serious answer, I always say Porsche. Nobody else makes such an awesome car that's also as durable.
very impressive. although i wish they timed the launches to see if the last 10 were still in the 2's. judging from his reactions though, they probably were. damn i need this

he's implying that Corvette's are equivalent to hot American garbage found in the back of a McDonald's dumpster
nastyALPHA Thats why Porsche had to recall every single GT3. Because they're perfect, right? Get real.
Porsche at least recalls their cars whenever there's a rare situation like this. GM and Ford blame it all on the customer.
Memo to self. In some future date, pass on purchase of used sapphire blue metallic 911 Turbo S tested by Road and Track..
Porsche claims 2.9s 0-60mph, car does 2.6-2.8
Nissan claims 2.8s 0-60mph, car does 3.

Stryke Exactly.

- Instead of voiding the warranty, launch control allowed for 4 consecutive launches, and is then locked out for 1.5 miles of driving. You can then launch it another 4 times. Unless you're launching your GT-R like the guy is in this Porsche, that's insignificant.
that's more information than necessary.
***** not really, considering the misinformation.
your said information was readily available everywhere since a couple of years ago. It is more than necessary. don't copy and paste.
Didn't copy and paste. I paraphrased and brought the information here since some people are too lazy to find it for themselves.
This is a pretty stupid argument you're having with me right now. As if there's some sort of shortage of letters on UA-cam.
Wow 2.6. I've never been a huge fans of Porsche, but I do know that their cars are one of the few sports cars that can take extreme punishment over and over.
thank you road & track, this is a cool video. I think i should bring this up, where are all the GTR fanboy?
Finally an entertaining person from road and track!
I have a 2019 turbo and ferrari 458. I'd never take the horse to track day in the summer. Porsche is the most reliable exotic....yes....exotic...out there.
What an absolute beast of a car.
If I had the money for it, I would definitely buy it.
if you anyone has anything negative to say about this your crazy I'm not even a fan boy but this is amazing !!!
That's probably more fun that the reviewer's had in a good long time. Very impressive, thanks for the video! Kudos to Porsche.
This was like watching someone go from sober to wasted.
I remember watching this video many years ago when the car just came out. Curious as to where this car is now after all these years, and all of those hard launches.
With all my respect, I don't think that Ferrari could do the same....
***** No the Ferrari would break down after the 20 start - that my comon eperience with that cars. The Ferrari is for sunday, the 911 is for every da yuse.
If you listen carefully you can hear a 430 and a gallardo crying after the 2nd launch
Is Road and Track back from the dead on UA-cam?
Awesome :).
Yeah..... How did that turn out for you LMAO
mad respect for this Porsche. lifetime clutch is awesome!
Pretty amazing technology, must be a blast to drive
0-60mph in 2.9 seconds is just insane for a street car. It would literally take your breath away... And make you grin ear to ear ha ha.
So I take it you bought it?
German Engineering anyday =D
Love it man this is bad ass! Caswell + Porsche + road and track = awesomeeee
I never thought much of Porsche but that's fucking impressive.
LoL
Porsche, "the other car companies just can't make' em like this... "
True ,true
I can still remember the day's when breaking into the 5's for 0-60 was amazing. this is just crazy.
Impressive, great video! Regards from Portugal!
"You get what you pay for."
Porsche built their reputation through endurance races like Le Man and Daytona 24 hour races.
You guys really gotta have Caswell host more of these videos... I think if he keeps doing them regularly they'll blow up, very cool!
Question: did it consistently get under 3.0 sec every time?
that's a good question they really didn't answer
I do launch control frequently in my base 2022 911 (992) with Sport Chrono. In normal and Sport mode, it revs to 4k RPM before launching, in Sport Plus mode it revs to 5k RPM before launching. It is the exact same PDK transmission that they put in the Turbo's and GT3 variants. Those cars have way more HP and torque than a base 911, so I figure I can launch it as much as I want. The tire smell is magnificent!
Was this a one time thing or is Caswell going to be beating cars for R&T from now on? Hope this will be the norm.
Stig Msr well this video at least proves u can launch it 10 times without stopping. i mean heck, dude just launched, stopped for 2 seconds, then literally launched again without his hands on the steering wheel. if i do that in my 718, i dont think it would survive 3 runs in a row
Dream car Badass never disappoints
He's having way too much fun lol
build race party representing! hell yeah Bill please tell us you will be the face of road and track on the tube of you from now on?!
my nissan micra could do that all day too. just not quite as fast? why is this so amazing?
.
***** Thanks for that. Good stuff.
***** LMMFAO xD
Too fucking right, Lawrence. NISSAN MICRA, the last of the thoroughbred muscle cars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
uhm because your micra doesn't make over FIVE HUNDRED HORSEPOWER pushed to all four wheels. but you drive a micra so you probably don't understand car stuff lol
Super impressed; a true beast!!!
Not a Porsche fan but, fast..
I'm in love! Lol
This is just a wet dream :)
Good to see you back in action.
dear santa
That is honestly amazing.
I bet that having sex with a women isn't the same after having this much fun with the 911 Turbo S. PS By the expression on your face, I have come to this conclusion.
I've done this at the drag strip with my '93 fox body, then drove it home. Good job Porsche.
Ladies and Gentlemen......There is no substitute.
PDK is awesome.
Talk about abusing the car! 50 launch controls is excessive. What were you expecting, a break down?! It's a Porsche!!
Actually it was 61.
Best car on the planet! Only quicker car is veyron a 1.6 million. Ill take the porsche
You sir are having too much fun. :P
maybe nissan need to take a lesson for the gtr.
i wonder what the difference is
I'm wondering what that PDK clutch is made from now...and how much C&D will have to pay for to replace it & sell it back to Porsche.
From what they were told by a big dude at Porsche with respect to the affects of such a test, $0.
It's unobtainium.
he drove it like someone else owned it
So, that's pretty much the best job ever. I have driven older Turbo 911's and loved them. I can't imagine what this one must be like. Maybe someday...
Will Porsche ever let you test a car again? Impressive but that car is going to need some love sooner then later....
drive like it's stolen. here we go
Porsche, the best there was, is and ever will be.
If I race a focus st and I beat him in my Brz. It is not because my car is faster. It is because I am a better driver than him.
Launch control takes all the skill out of drag Raceing. Still a wonderful piece of technology.
This isn't a lame ass simple-minded drag car though.
vtecnegro85 but launch control IS a show off thingy, it's banned from F1 for a reason
No driver skill involved to get a 2.9 seconds zero to sixty. Just write a check. Sorry do a wire transfer.
If you bought a BRZ for the purpose of drag racing, I think you might be missing something. Take it to the track!
If you want a very high performance car that is truly "daily driver reliable" then you reach for a Porsche.
wow WTF is this, how this is even possible??
Well there's your problem. You pressed the "lunch control" button. Try launch control next time ;)
thenewmedic ha ha you got that right; probably I was eating lunch while launching the car and that did not work :))
***** Well that M5 is much older and heavier than this newer lighter porsche,
And still makes him smile every time!
I liked it when they had only the word Turbo at the back... now it looks like a billboard.
You can option what you want it to say on the back of your porsche.
monkeypainter808 I know you can ask to remove it and leave the back blank but not sure if you can ask for just the older style... i could be wrong though.
Enigma w you can have only 911 or porsche or turbo or all at once
kraenk12 ok , thats cool to know then .. thx
No this is wrong.. you can put whatever you want on the back! Just ask your Dealer... my Dad has also the old 993 "Turbo" Logo on his 997 Turbo ;)
Can't remember last time I was this impressed wit new-fangeled-tech-wizardtry
im not sure why there is so much hate for the GTR in the commets.
Sounded like a F-18 launching from a carrier from inside. I love it.
2:34..Shuttle launch
There're a lot of wicked cars out there, but when somebody asks which I'd buy if I won the lottery & they want a serious answer, I always say Porsche. Nobody else makes such an awesome car that's also as durable.
PLEASE...please do this with a GT-R and post video...
It could probably do 10-20 launches and than just destroy its transmission....
***** Whatever the outcome, I would love to see it.
very impressive. although i wish they timed the launches to see if the last 10 were still in the 2's. judging from his reactions though, they probably were. damn i need this
