- Masters of the Universe Thunder Punch He-man is one of those figures I always find broken. The idea is you load a set of ring caps into the back of the figure and when he punches a small hammer inside ignites the cap and make's his punch sound mighty.
The problem is that the latches that hold the caps in the back snap off. This maybe due to the force of the hammer, or just a poor design. Either way it was time I got to work on this figure and fix it so it would work again.

Watching that gave me a sense memory of the smell of used caps. Very nostalgic!
Yeah, the smell of the caps is something you never forget. They still smell exactly the same. A slight whiff of gun powder.
Yeah, you can't get those in Sweden anymore to my knowledge. 😅
I bought them on eBay really cheap in he UK. But I guess each country has different rules when it comes to things with gunpowder in them.
@@toypolloi I think it might be a safety thing actually. Can't buy any firecrackers here either, only bottle rockets and the like. When I was a kid there were so many cool explosives you could get... and a lot fewer fingers to go around I guess 😅
D'you smell that? That smell, that cordite smell. I love the smell of Thunder Punch in the morning. Smells like . . . FUN!

Strangely, the backpack tabs never broke on my Thunder Punch He-Man, but one of the metal pins on the wheel in the backpack did! So I could only fire seven caps in a row, then had to open him up, move the cap along one notch, and fire the eighth.
I just acquired a thunder punch heman from a dollar bin…. One leg was chewed off but his gimmick works flawlessly…. Little leg transplant and he is back up on the shelf! Love this video! Great job!
I still have my Thunder Punch He-man from my childhood and it didn't have a cocking feature. You just pulled back his arm and released and it would fire.

As a owner of a Thunderpunch He-man as a child I could literally smell this video when the caps went off. Nice set of repairs. I don't think I would have thought of using the styrene L piece before watching. I think I would have blended it into the body with something like Tamiya filler putty or Milliput instead of more thin pieces of styrene myself though.
I was having beers with some friends once and a guy was cutting rebar in the next yard. I asked everyone if the smell reminded of anything, the guys smiled and the woman didn't understand.
Thank you for your effort and your craftsmanship! And also for showing how this mechanism actually works - I never had Thunder Punch He-Man as a kid and after watching your video I was able to get the action feature to work for the first time on the one I bought recently!
Their dexterity is fantastic, great how they do it.
As a kid I saw a lot of worn out figurines in kindergarten. back then.
Luckily mine have stayed in top condition so far.
I didn't have the Thunder Punch though. This figure so I hope, comes with the ORIGINS again on the market.
The blanks were, and are here in Germany without problems to get, especially on carnival of course.

nice repair. I never had or played with the old TP He-man back in the day . I am surprised there was never a Skeletor equivalent as that seemed the rage, unless Dragon blaster skele was meant to be TP He-mans counter .

Slightly unrelated but I remember the reels of paper caps more than the plastic 'magazines'. Use to run a 2p coin along the length of them for super snappy action :) Thanks for the videos
Yeah, we had those as well. Certain cap guns used them. Great fun to be had.
In watching the video I feel like you weren’t doing the punch action quite right which may have led to the inconsistency problems. I had this as a child, and you had to push the backpack down firmly to snap-lock it in place. It looked like maybe yours was sitting too high and not snapped closed properly. Also, I always held the fist with a finger, twisted his torso all the way back and let go, rather than setting it up (cocking it?) then trying to tap him so he punches. Maybe I was doing it wrong, but I never had issues with it not firing.
A really cool feature for an action figure (I was never too much into MOTU stuff). I think they reduced the “explosives” in the caps over the years. I remember having a 8-Shot revolver which even had small plastic bullets which would be blown out through the barrel. The sound was so loud it scared off ducks at a lake. Nowadays coughing is louder…🤪
Yes, so true. In the 80s my grandmother sent me out of house when I began to play with my 007-Plasticgun with caps,

I enjoy fixing the old figures to I watched the ram man video and it worked great thank you. I can only afford the rough looking figures and clean them up and paint them it's kinda relaxing in a way.i hope I can find a thunder punch human one day I've never even seen one in person. Great video

I can see your mistake. You were not pushed the backpack down after you closed the lid. Not sure since you fixed it if it can still do that. But you originally would flip it closed and push it hard down to lock it into place. It did not look locked in this video.
The way the back blasts open every time you use it, no wonder most are broken. Excellent Repair, Dave!👍
Outstanding, the hammer mechanism does seem particularly strong, no wonder they suffered failure at the shoulder. Great toy though.
Amazing fix . Motu toys really got beat up by kids so any motu fixes are great tools to have up your sleeve.
i think part of the stress on the latches might be the small explosion when firing the cap? it's not only the hammer hitting the wheel, i think...
exactly, there's a hammer hitting plus a little explosion, all hitting on two minuscle pieces of plastic...
I was always jealous of those kids int he commercials having those perfect set ups in their back yards for these toys.

That’s awesome 😲 I don’t see a lot of caps around my area but from the looks of it I don’t think they do them as good as when I was a kid, miss cap guns too but that I understand why they don’t make them anymore 🤷🏽♂️

I remember that was one of the most frustrating things as kid; caps not going off.
The chemical reaction of the caps exploding gradually erode the pins that go into the caps. It may be that some of the pins are a bit short, and that's why they are unreliable. Clean the residue off with a stiff brush, and maybe put a little light oil (sewing machine/razor oil) on them for long term storage?
One of my favourite MOTU figures, I love all the different variations of He man, skeletor and hordak they where all amazing!

Great fix, seems indistinguishable from the original! I’m consistently impressed by the great results you’re getting, especially from styrene and plastic weld. Cool that you also did a number of small touch ups that really affect the end result. Very good job!
One of the other commenters hit it right. You got to really lock it down into place. And it's one big motion, push hard back and let it go and POW.

Excellent fix Dave, i have 2 Thunder Punch He-Men in a box in my garage, i'm pretty sure they both have the same broken latch problem so definitely a fix i'll be doing in the future!

Very nicely done! One of the tabs on my figure broke pretty early on and I don't remember the caps going off every time even when it was new. It was actually somewhat disappointing. I ended up using all the caps in my Bravestarr gun instead.
That's good to know. I guessed it would have been a bit hit and miss even from new, just by the design. At least it works about 50% of the time now. And the fix is still holding up.

@@Jeflexful probably not since safety concerns have changed since the 80s. If they do make an Origins Thunderpunch He-man they may have to seek an alternate way to have the sound effects for the Thunderpunch, I would probably make it electronic.
@@twotonedearly Yeah. That makes sense actually. Unless Mattel decides to make it exclusively as a collector's item only, then they might be cheeky enough to sneak that cap firing feature in there. Who knows, right?

I also have one of these and I found the caps in a 99 cent store here in New Jersey and it worked exactly the same really unreliable and he man works fine but those caps I think they're just too old

Never saw this one as a kid and recently got it in a lot off ebay. I hadn't looked into it yet but was wondering what the back was for. I'm off to ebay to order caps lol. The back on mine isn't broken. Thank you for sharing.
Very cool. You are lucky to get an unbroken one. Be careful with it as I imagine they will break quite easily now being old and a bit brittle.
@@toypolloi it was a really good lot with some cool unknown at the time bonuses. Black lever Mantenna and painted back Tongue Lashor with others and a complete boxed Grayskull. My first purchase in collecting the MOTU from when I was a kid.

Great repair Polloi! But I do have a question, I've seen someone fix the leg bands but before pulling out and putting in bands, he would heat it up with a hair dryer and he could easily work with the bands and plastic, he could do it in 10 minutes, is this a recommended method?
You can do it either way. I sometimes heat them up, but it can be done easy enough without that step. I've done so many now I just don't bother with it. Cheers

Nice fix as always. Too bad that mexican version didn't have it's backpack, I remember playing with mine and it got the same problem, those damn tabs just snaped and the whole thing fell off.

I don't. I've only ever seen him with the broken back tabs. All the ones I have still click in place.

i got the retro battle armor he man figure and the retro skeletor figure i also got the retro figure of faker and i got the retro battle cat and panthor figure and the revalation figure
Not sure If mine coyld be fixed, the hammer is always in the fired position, the waist isn't straight unless you use something to wedge it, and has the same back issue as yours

There are two types of caps, a bit unrealible and the ones that don't work.

As I say. It's legal. The blades are short and foldable. I'm in no risk of jail time. But thanks for worrying.

You don't.

The plastic on the chest can be quite brittle. So it tends to crack if you try to remove them.

Different factories, different paint. There are so many variations on most toys like this.
