    I had the nightmare of spotting Ray Williams at a contest. We had 5 spotters, I think he hit 931. We were cheering louder than the crowd because no one was confident about catching that. He made sure to come up and express his appreciation to all the spotters and judges during the meet. He's a real class act and I've made sure to thank the spotters and judges during my contests ever since because it felt real good to get that appreciation after a long day spotting and loading.

      @EmeffMonkey Cameras? Right off the top of my head that's going to be a wiring mess, spotters will have to adjust to a possible unsafer position to give cams a clear view which would be worse. And what happens when a cam malfunctions? Now we don't know if they hit depth or not.
      If this is something that upsets you than find a fed with a setup your comfortable with. Every powerlifter that steps on the platform knowing the risks they're taking

      Depends on the wraps… length m, thickness and wrap style. If you can bear the pain you can indeed get upwards of 100 from the longer wraps some feds allow. In the 25 years I’ve been on and around the sport equipment tech has gotten “better” allowing more poundages with minimum risk of blowouts. I switched to strongman and the equipment is rampant there too. I’m just an old fart so I’ve always gone raw but it’s a personal decision and preference.

      For me they add about 60 lbs. I‘ve squatted 225 kg with wraps in competition, and 192.5 kg raw in training. I don‘t think I could have gone above 200 kg raw at the time.
      Remember though that in the IPF equipped division they‘re not just wearing knee wraps, they‘re also wearing squat suits, and those can help quite a bit more.

They are going insanely heavy, but they still make me kind of afraid of getting hurt. I squat alone, so I just can't imagine what would happen if my leg blew out like one of these guys. It went on the guys neck forward. I mean someone can potentially die if things go completely wrong. I sometimes lift at my brothers house since he has a full gym. Not even a person in there other than me.

    • @SIenderplier
      @SIenderplier 8 місяців тому +5

      I've thought the same with regards to bench and squat, this is absurd, irresponsible and an accident waiting to happen. Evidently the number of deaths that have happened outside of competition isn't enough for them to force a rule on safety racks so it's probably going to take someone dying an awful gnarly death in competition for safety to be taken seriously in many federations.

    • @ralrem4005
      @ralrem4005 8 місяців тому +1

      @@SIenderplier you clearly dont know anything about powerlifting if you dont think that safety is a top priority. Spotters are meant to help assist you if you fail a lift. It’s in the rule book that you can get warnings for dumping the bar. But you can’t expect for anyone to to catch the bar on a freak accident, not with serious weight. Once more than 220kg is loaded two extra side spotters are added on the squat for this reason, not enough for 3 people to handle, you can’t do too much more than 5 spotters. That’s why it’s in the rule book that you’re not allowed to dump the bar because it’s dangerous for everyone envolved you’re supposed to stay with the bar and spotters assist you up. Granted, just like in any sport, IPF is infamous for having bad spotter accidents but these clips aren’t a showcase of this, these clips are big dudes squatting big weights, nobody is freakishly catching 400kg+ when a bar is dumped.

    Equipped powerlifting is a joke. With all the aids they have helping them lift the weight why not just have the spotter help you lift it while he’s there too. Why not? Louie Simon’s touched on this, he said “I don’t train for raw powerlifting, I don’t want a big squat I want the biggest squat.” The heaviest raw squat IS the heaviest squat! Because it’s raw, it’s what the HUMAN BODY is capable of. Not squat suits wraps and all that. Doesn’t make sense to me.

      This is why many feds use a monolift with safety straps. Spotters can help regulation sticking point failures when it’s a bit too heavy, but not a near 200kg man falling forward with 450kg on his back.
