  • Unboxing video of an Optimus Polaris Optifuel TACTICAL version, and a .6l Tactical fuel bottle. The Tactical version is supposedly only special order or for military/government outfits. It differs slightly from the "normal" Polaris, in that the Tactical version has a black pump knob instead of green, and the spindle control is plain finish rather than green.
Optimus item number for the stove is 8020428, and the bottle item number is 8019622.
I will be purchasing a BernieDawg silent cap for it soon.

    👍👍👍 .. a worthy unboxing 😊.
They're freely available here in Switzerland. Pricey, Yes! I have one on my 'wish list' .. currently just a Wish 😏.
Consolation .. I have it's Great Uncle .. the Optimus 8R Hunter White Gas Stove. Bought new in the 70's and it made me breakfast this morning 😁.

Haha you’d think the ‘tactical only for the military ‘ one wouldn’t have a childproof cap. That’s pretty sweet looking. They should license the berniedawg caps so the enemy can’t hear the stove a mile away. The original optimus ‘for the military only tactical’ stoves (the optimus 111d and 11 explorer) were both silent burners.
Have you seen the military msr xgk kit?

Ha, yeah. I hate the "childproof" caps. I'm sure there is some regulation as to why they seem to be the only ones available. I'm going to substitute my Brunton bottle when I use this, as I want to keep the Optimus bottle "pristine" for now.
I have really tried to like MSR stuff over the years, but for some reason I can't explain, I just can't get into them. I've seen pics and videos of the military XGK, but I dunno, I just can't get into MSR stuff all that much.

I think the child proof cap is more for when you carabiner the bottle on the outside of the bag to prevent accidental spills. Great video though I didn't know they made a tac version of the stove.

@@mr.j2751 the old caps have a hole in them as well. In fact, I discovered that there are actually two different variants of the optimus child proof caps.
I discovered this because I’m a stove nerd and I’m not entirely proud of it.

Are the fins or ribbs inside the buner cup higher than the ones in normal Polaris? That was one of the downsides of the Polaris compared with Nova. Shorter fins made the stove less efficient burning heavier fuels and also longer priming times.

Was the fuel bottle included or an additional purchase?

...and how it fits into the Trangia? I have useing my Trangia for over 10 years now and now i think about an "update". What do you think about it?

    • @trangiauser7563
      @trangiauser7563  4 роки тому +1

I have not tried to fit it into any of my Trangias yet. I am fairly certain the stud on the Polaris has the "D" shaped post, and my (Trangia) adapter has the round hole for the stud. I'm not sure I want to modify my adapter at this time. I did buy this with the intention of using it a Trangia at some point. I also think that the windscreen base will need to be modified in some way, to allow the larger end of the fuel hose to pass through it.

In Europe, they seem readily available. I'm curious whether they want to replace the nova by this.
It is a bit weird to have the nova, nova + and the polaris, since they all seem very similar.
There's one video on YT where the Nova outperforms the Polaris with quite a margin, it would be nice of you could maybe try and replicate that?
    All the best!

This one came from an online store in Europe (not eBay). I could not find a North Amercan source for the Tactical version. I saw some on various European eBay sites, but the sellers did not want to ship to the USA.
There has been some discussion on classiccampstoves about why the Nova and Polaris are manufactured simultaneously. It has to do with different countries' regulations regarding the gas canister option and certifications involved.
Not sure that an 'old school' Nova and modern day Polaris comparison is justified? I dunno, maybe at some point. For now, I'm just going to use/enjoy them individually for what they are/are not.

@@trangiauser7563 Aah, yes, I think i've read something along those lines.
The reason for the comparison, is because Optimus claims 47% more wattage on the polaris.
I kind of call bullshit :)

    • @jd7713

I have the original Nova. Excellent stove. Way faster in priming and burns Kerosene and other heavy fuels more efficiently than Polaris. In Polaris in order to accommodate burning canister gas as fuel they compromised the design efficiency.
