I like backpacking and camping stoves. I prefer single burner stoves, but I do have some "suitcase" stoves from various manufacturers.
I also like vintage camping gear and equipment.
This channel is to show stoves, stove usage methods, comparisons, reviews (good and bad), and perhaps some camping gear at some point.
My icon pic is a 1970's Trangia 27 kit and a Holubar tent.
I also do vintage air cooled Volkswagen mechanical restoration, so there will probably be some VW videos here as well.
Thanks for watching!

Vintage 1970's MSR 9 Stove, burning using the original white pump.
Переглядів 160Рік тому
Original MSR 9 backpacking stove. The 9 dates from approximately 1973~1974. The 9 is the first production stove by MSR. Some features that make a 9 distinctive are: fiberboard base, scalloped burner bell, short pot support arms, small dimples in the aluminum housing. The scalloped burner produces a really neat looking flame, very different from later MSR stoves with the rounded-edge burner bell...

From an article in The Morning Call, Allentown PA, June 24, 1990: "Radio Wars," a new play about behind-the-scenes radio industry activity, makes its air debut on Muhlenberg College-based WMUH-FM, 91.7, Allentown. "Radio Wars" is a 30-minute satirical look at the battlefields of commercial and non-commercial radio, according to writer-director Joe Swanson, WMUH station manager. The play, he say...

Sometimes he'll take a small mouthful of food, walk to another room, drop the food, look around (maybe for villains or spies?), eat the morsels he dropped, then return to his bowl to finish the rest of his food. We call it 'doing his food thing'.

Optimus Polaris Optifuel Tactical: Unboxing, and rambling talking about it.

Unboxing video of an Optimus Polaris Optifuel TACTICAL version, and a .6l Tactical fuel bottle. The Tactical version is supposedly only special order or for military/government outfits. It differs slightly from the "normal" Polaris, in that the Tactical version has a black pump knob instead of green, and the spindle control is plain finish rather than green. Optimus item number for the stove is...
Vintage MSR FIREFLY Stove Simmer Flame
Переглядів 3265 років тому
This is a loud video, adjust your volume as necessary. "As purchased" test firing simmer flame of a recently purchased MSR FIREFLY backpacking stove. MSR instructions say to allow the stove to run on high for 4-5 minutes before lowering to a simmer flame. I am presuming this time allows the burner, stove body, and fuel tube to heat up to allow for continuous proper fuel vaporization after the f...

"Rare" Red Mini Trangia 28

"Rare" circa 1990 RED Trangia 28 series cook set. I believe this is a new, never used kit. Other than some dents to the lid, it shows no signs of use. Complete with instructions! I am not sure of the MSR connection, perhaps they were a Trangia distributor? Rambling Review Of A Vintage Optimus 111 (111T?) Backpacking Stove
Переглядів 3,3 тис.6 років тому
Swap meet find, user condition Optimus 111, perhaps a 111T? In 'as purchased' condition (aside from the filler cap being replaced for testing purposes), burning the fuel that was in it when I bought it. Enjoy the poor audio quality, the rambling story of how it was found, musings on 111's, a somewhat timed 'boil test' (which in all reality is completely pointless), and nowhere near Hollywood qu...

This is a barbaric method. Although its acceptable if you use a single hand.
I disassembled mine and put in a carbon felt (plumbers blanket) ring that I made. I then cut off one coil to each of the springs for easier reassembly. Then instead of using the roll pins on the legs, I used some 3/32x1 in cotter pins for easier disassembly and cleaning. Just bend the tip for stability. Sorry, a few years late, but I used this video for my references.
73 beetle what if valves on one closed but 2 is not rocking
How did you remove the clock?
why would a kettle like this be non-stick inside? kettles are for boiling liquids.
Nice video. Hi from Sweden ❤
Where you able to repair this radio? I just picked up one from a swapmeet thinking I could use it in my 72 super beetle which doesn't have a radio.. However I'm not sure where the wires go and its missing the faceplate.
my project for today: find TDC for all four cylinders paint a number on the bottom of the pulley, because the baja exhaust is in the way of the top paint a dot on the side, front of the pulley, so I can see where I am while looking at the valves
Thanks for the info. I soldered mine today. I minded that the fabric inside is cotton which can take the heat in normal use when the fuel is keeping it wet, but in the heating for the soldering it could perhaps turn into carbon, so i put my stove in shallow water so it can suck water from the holes while i solder.
Excellent video
I have loved my ~2004 Nova for around 20 years now, and it has been my go to stove. While looking into Trangia and alcohol stoves I learned about the Nova cup that Trangia has and it was all over for me... I have since purchased a 25 kit, a 27 kit, the Nova cup, and an even older Nova off eBay that needs some parts and TLC but it looks like I should be able to get it going. Pretty soon I will be drowning in dependable, modular, Swedish cooksets and stoves that I can mix and match to my hearts content depending on the season and trip type. Sweet! Thanks for the video.... great content and cool red Trangia as well. Cheers
I hear you man! I just bought a 90s 27, can't wait until it arrives and I can go on my first moto camping trip!😄
Without lighting, timing, or measuring temperatures, it's hard to come to any conclusions other than you are showing off that you have TWO of these. HAHA!
I was banging my head for a month with my bug. Some how i ended with a 180 deg rotated distributor. I extremely grateful. If you could add to the title that the engine it 1200cc
Are the fins or ribbs inside the buner cup higher than the ones in normal Polaris? That was one of the downsides of the Polaris compared with Nova. Shorter fins made the stove less efficient burning heavier fuels and also longer priming times.
I came to your channel because I found one of these exact same stoves together with the windscreen, two of the same SIGG fuel bottles, the fuel pump, and a stainless steel SIGG Tourist mess kit for a whopping $3 dollars at a yard sale. I brought it home, and it fired up perfectly. I'm so happy with this purchase, and I hope to get good use out of this new (to me) kit. I knew it was some great gear, but you helped me to learn a little bit more about it. Thank you for the informative video. 👍🙂👍
Appreciate your vvidoe, I'm trying to find out timing on a bus 2lt. There aren't many that don't use beetle engine. Also I've replaced my dizzy with a electronic. I had moved the engine without the dizzy in motor. The rotor points 90 past tdc. But my open inlet valve is open with spark plug removed in no 1 pot. Regards
People that are bothered with the discoloration of metals from the heat and or flux, instead of just worrying about sealing the stove from leaking, should try to invent a new alloy that does not discolor from...anything; good luck.

Beautiful stove
Vintage.
OH for a mini Titanium Trangia .
You don't need to wire the cap in place. After fitting you just twist it and the flare around the bottom holds it in place with the two raised pieces in the flame spreader. HTH
I'd just uses torch lighter. Cheap & effective
Was the fuel bottle included or an additional purchase?
There will never be another.
that is a very cool vintage trangia set- multi fuel set up, congrats. :) and thank you for the informative video as well. :)
Awesome video, thanks buddy :) - one question though, - did u say you could use butane with the nova? i thought that wasnt possible, or maybe it is, with the changes that you've made ? kind regards from Denmark :) Claus
I think it is only possible due to the Primus fuel line/pump, since it includes the threads for the Butane canister.
Where did my sentence go?!
Mer da's golden retriever eats around peas.
There's a suspension rig for that, nobody bought those. Nice [content], tanks dude.
Thanks for this ! Question, do you advise using a spring on the rocker shaft between the exhaust rockers? I don’t have one. If you recommend , where are they sourced. Thanks again
Update .. Carbon Felt. Since my previous response, I filled my Trangia Burner with a combination of Ceramic Wool and Carbon Felt .. the Wool at the bottom, topped with a tight roll of Carbon Felt. So far, very good results. 'Blooming' takes a little longer .. it still burns with gusto, especially if enclosed in a windscreen, albeit, somewhat more gently, especially when using the simmer ring. The gentler burn suits my style of cooking and is thus for me, a bonus. Lowest temperature test so far has been 3°C and I rustled up an Oats, Toast and Coffee Breakfast on the river bank without a hitch. Am waiting for some sub-zero temps to test further. A huge Bonus is the reduced fuel 'spillage' hazard .. something of note, considering the Swiss absolute lack of a sense of humour with those who set their forests and the grass in their recreational areas afire 😏.
👍👍👍 That's a new one to me. Looks like the illegitimate result of an illicit meeting between my Optimus 8R Hunter and Trangia 28 Mini .. will have to have a word there 🤨 😁. I could have mentioned that using a lid would have appreciably reduced the boiling time .. but I won't 😊. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..
Thank you for the best video on this topic on UA-cam!!!
Can you determine TDC by simply finding the "no movement " point on the #1 cylinder valves ?
But isn't #2 suppose to rock mine not,why
The pink came from the flux cleaning the metal. Do not use your finger to apply the flux, your finger has oils on it that can transfer to the metal causing leaks. instead use a quality Q-tip or a flux brush.
Thanks
👍👍👍 .. interesting .. thanks for sharing. I've been mulling over doing something similar .. perhaps now is the time to give it a go. I recently read a post from a guy from Taiwan who is playing around with using 'wicking' in his Trangia Burner. His setup consisted of Steel Wool in the bottom of the Burner, rolled Carbon Felt on top and then topped with a disc of SS Mesh cut to a snug fit which keeps everything in place. I presume that the Steel Wool allows for liquid fuel 'sloshing' at the bottom and thus good 'wicking' up to the external Jets whilst the Carbon Felt acts as the internal 'Wick' .. at the same time protecting the Steel Wool from direct contact with the flame. His comparison test looked impressive .. the 'wicked' burner giving a 'bluer' flame than the unwicked one. Blooming was good. A test on a Trangia Copy (w alternate smaller jet holes) did not produce an as effective 'Bloom'. An additional bonus was his 'knock over and roll' test. Absolutely no spillage from a newly-filled burner. This carries weight with me as here in Switzerland, the Authorities have absolutely no sense of humour with those setting fire to their forest, albeit accidental .. with eye-watering fines being the order of the day. He did say that he was experimenting with using Ceramic / Glass Wool in place of the Carbon Felt / Steel Wool .. so I'm waiting to see how that turns out.
great use for a an air cooled vw fan haha good work
👍👍👍 .. a worthy unboxing 😊. They're freely available here in Switzerland. Pricey, Yes! I have one on my 'wish list' .. currently just a Wish 😏. Consolation .. I have it's Great Uncle .. the Optimus 8R Hunter White Gas Stove. Bought new in the 70's and it made me breakfast this morning 😁.
Got a Fire jet since the nineties. It sometimes leakes at the bottom, bust besides that a lovely stove. Works fine on ordinary fuel as well.
👍👍👍 Nice, very nice .. thanks for sharing 😊. I have the Optimus 8R Hunter Stove .. similar Burner Mechanism. Bought new in the mid-70's and still in regular use. Also in my my kit is a little Trangia 28-t Mini Set .. love it! Complaining .. some will 'chirp' about just about everything. In this day of 'millisecond gratification', having to wait or pre-plan for a anything is considered close to a disaster 🙄. But then, I was born in '50, we grew up differently, accepted and adapted accordingly 😏. This morning's 'brunch' (Oats with additions) is right now ready to be done using a Trangia-clone kettle and a Tatonka 18cm SS bowl and a home-made alcohol burner. I think I'll take out the 8R tomorrow. Once again, a good share .. take care ..
No repair / maintenance kit ? How tactical is it with the roaring burner?
Tactical is not synonymous with silent.
@@Jakelol1980 Tactical : sensible in action and thought. advisable .... careful cautious. accomplishing the mission while avoiding the enemy A ROARING BURNER IS NOT TACTICAL
@@mikerilling2745 From the Cambridge Dictionary: /ˈtæk·tɪ·kəl/ relating to tactics; done in order to get a particular result: He made a tactical error in agreeing to the debates. Tactical military operations or weapons are used to achieve specific goals.
OK Jughead I want to see you anywhere NEAR a CZ and set up camp using a roar burner that can EASILY be detected from 50m and see the look on your face when that incoming grenade plops down between your knees 😂
Great video - I have 1974 beetle with tons of hesitation - been through carb, fuel pump, now going for timing. I have a few questions: 1. Is there a good simple diagram to confirm I have all hoses in the right places? 2. I notice another 1/2" port (top right) on fan shroud - what is that for? 3. I have a metal tube (maybe 3/8") coming up from the deck plate (drivers side to left of dist) and lands in a lil pot (with a lil nipple on top of it) mounted just behind the carb. I have not seen this on any bugs any videos. Is there a way I can send a photo? 4. Will timing just go out? Thanks the TDC explanation was the best I've seen... Love the crankshaft keyway check, too.

I got lucky. Mine didn't leak
For preheating i use the wick from a chafer fuel tin in a cigar shaped hip flask. It lasts a lot longer than alchohol and is much cheaper in the UK. It takes under 2 minutes and then i just push in the wick to snuff it and close the hip flask.
Everything is worthy of an unboxing video....because it's extremely helpful for me and my job. lol
Cool thanks
