If Mel Blanc were alive today, I bet many would ask him to scream "TURN OUT THOSE LIGHTS!" at conventions.
Indeed
Ohhhhhh yes! He would've done it gladly. He never refused a voice request.

This might be an old joke but given how Animaniacs used it and it's gained new popularity on the internet, maybe it should be revived in current cartoons!
Mel Blanc the master of voiceovers
4:37 Dot Warner: TURN OUT THAT LIGHT!!! It attracts insects.
Animaniacs is the modern time “turn off the lights” scene during the 90’s
It should be this
"TURN OFF THOSE F#@%× Lights
Was this the time that lights had to be out at night to prevent the enemy from attacking the country?
I think it was to conserve electricity during the war
@@terrance3218 both, I think
the blackouts were to make sure german bombers couldn't be guided by the lights, if you did turn them on in your house, you had to black out the windows covering them in a black fabric so no light can escape, no smoking out doors, cars even had their head-lights covered which of course caused accidents, not a fun time, streets had white-lines painted so people can see at least somewhat as to where they were going and some of those lines are still visible in places around the country --- war is hell in all kinds of ways
*@SRT8Driver* has this nailed down. It was mostly a London thing. London was fire-bombed by the Germans from September 1940 to May 1941. - - Holy cow, I know this from high school history. But 9 months?!?! Its known as _The Blitz._ (weblink below) Now you can understand why Londoners were paranoid about nightly German air raids. Night bombing wasnt a concern in the USA, but all kinds of commodity conservation was: gasoline, rubber, copper, steel, & yes electricity
Although Im not finding historic material to prove this tonight, just a few years ago I saw a PBS Special on WWII that documented a 24/7 American bombing raid against Germany. For approximately 9 months (or more) in 1944 one of America's two-star generals (Bradly?? I dont know) commenced this night-&-day bombing raid. It is named _Operation Rolling Thunder,_ but its not to be confused with another bombing raid of the same name, which took place against Vietnam in 1965. Anyway, specific top secret storage facilities for Nazi tanks, planes, artillery, shells, & bombs were targeted. Also their factories. But especially Berlin, in retaliation for the German's destruction of London during the Blitz

the gag started with mel blanc impersonating a military instructor who would scream at cadets to turn off lights during a bombing drill when he was appearing as Private Sad Sack on the Radio, I belive.

"TURN OFF THOSE F##$%! LIGHTS."
This quote was common during air raid of WWII back in the 40’s to prevent nightly bombings, however this quote saw a resurgence in popularity in the 90’s (as seen at 4:24 on Animaniacs) and grew even more with popular music (especially EDM).

A blackout during war, or in preparation for an expected war, is the practice of collectively minimizing outdoor light, including upwardly directed (or reflected) light. This was done in the 20th century to prevent crews of enemy aircraft from being able to identify their targets by sight, such as during the London Blitz of 1940. In coastal regions, a shoreside blackout of city lights also helped protect ships from being seen silhouetted against the artificial light by enemy submarines farther out at sea.

0:32 Jeez, were the Wardens always this rude when telling citizens to turn off their lights?
Probably it had to have been taken seriously and they had to scream a lot. Also Sour Puss in the cartoon I believe is a sergeant which explains the attitude
That was the typical image of them. Heck in Britain for a while, air raid wardens were more disliked than Hitler.
@@darrenheideman2546 There a video, article or something I can find about that?
@@RoseSupreme Oh, World at War, a documentary from the 1970s sort of covered at. Of course, there was some exaggeration, but then again, it's like people who complained about mask mandates.
Think of Today's Soldiers in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier or The Royal Guard. When you commit a violation, they will make sure you know what you did as clearly as possible. And that's them asking nicely. You don't want to see them when they get mean.
Dot's pretty dang good at channeling Mel Blanc.
Very funny to have some say that ‘PUT OUT THAT/THOSE LIGHT(S)!!!’ To shock the characters.
I don’t even remember how old I was when I asked my parents to explain why the lights are turned out in this context.
Did you find out the origin of that gag? It goes back to the World Wars when you had literally the fear of getting bombed by the enemy aircraft, if you lived in the cities or near army bases, factories or down by the docks. You HAD to have your lights off at the designated time. Got that?
I didn't get it as a kid when it was said, like in the Bugs cartoon with the Dummy Giant. Now I know it's a phrase from the war about during air raids, you had to keep lights out so the enemy couldn't see you.
Same
Well... I automatically understood the meaning due to learning military history on my own as a teen
What gets me laughing at this episode is how the voice seem to have come out of no where. XD

0:26 "RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTH!!!!!!!!!"

Oh that's why had that. Makes so much sense. God damn. The more I learn about these old cartoons the more amazed I am at the history they contain. Some which I can notice, others I have to look up, and ones that are pointed out to me.
Another fairly common one is that characters in a chase scene would scramble to a taxi or a bus or some other mode of transportation, then they'd stop, turn to the audience and ask "Is this trip _really_ necessary?", and then generally they'd all get off and continue their chase on foot. That was a fuel rationing slogan. The military needed all the gas, diesel, and coal they could get, so civilians were encouraged to always ask themselves whether or not they could walk or carpool to wherever it is they were going.
Another running joke are the "4F" signs slapped on characters or things.
Scratch: are you talking about Sonic?

It was so they couldn’t see the buildings and bomb them.
It was to prevent any towns from being spotted by nighttime enemy bombers.
Also to conserve energy during the war.
Big Cities, factories & Army, Navy & Airports were the bomb targets.
