I had the same problem. HERE IS WHY IT STARTED WORKING. Starting with the monitor, the only port that supports the 144 Hz refresh rate is the Display Port. HDMI's on Monitor tops out at 100 Hz. Now it is tricky with laptops. Not all ports are connected directly to your Gaming GPU. I have a Dell G3 with a GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q. Whenever you go to NVIDIA Control Panel, toggle through all the sections. There is a section that tells you what ports are direct connections to your Gaming GPU. I believe it is under 3D Settings and then under "Set PhysX Configuration". In my case with my computer, the only port that will allow me to use my GTX 1660 Ti is my HDMI cable. Long time ago I used the same thing as this guy did, DP to Mini DP cable. Again, my Mini DP is not connected to my NVIDIA GPU. Not all Laptops are the same. Some laptops have both the HDMI and Mini Display port that are connected directly to the Gaming GPU just like this Lenovo Legion. Cousin has a HP Omen and he also has both HDMI and Mini Display Port that are both connected directly to GPU. Point is, CHECK YOUR NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL and see what ports are a direct connect to your Gaming GPU, and find a way to use that port as well as the Display Port on the 144 Hz monitor so that you can get the full 144Hz.

Two things. 1. That Apple Thunderbolt adapter did not work, because it's a thunderbolt device. The machine does not have thunderbolt. Thunderbolt 2 and mini-displayport use the same connector, so I can see how that would get confusing. 2. Yes, HDMI 2.0 is capable of 144Hz at 1440p, but on most monitors with both Displayport and HDMI ports, the HDMI port is usually limited to something like 120Hz, and may not work with Gsync or Freesync. It's a limitation of the chipset on the monitor. My Samsung Freesync monitor is the same. You did the right thing, adapting the USB-C port on the machine, (which includes displayport), to full size displayport with that cable you bought. Also, thanks for making this video, as it will help others who want to do this correctly.

Wrong, most USB-C display Laptops have full thunderbolt 3 functionality. Thunderbolt is an Intel technology, one that they allowed apple to use in their products. (You could say apple codeveloped more in the realm of building them into their mac hardware layouts) And yes Thunderbolt 2 looks like Mini DP and TB3 uses USB C ends.
However, it's the protocol being used that matters TB3 has been in windows laptops since like 2015.
      TB
I couldn't tell you 100% why the apple adapter didn't work though... A lot of them have a history of only playing nice with Mac devices. Or being really picky in direction of adapters.
ACTUALLY thats probably it.. That apple adapter is made to be in between a display port out to a usb -c/ TB3 Input,,
(Mac with DP out.. To adapter to USB C in monitor)
Look at the adapter for your clue. the box on the adapter is for when displayport needs to add pcie and power to make it readable by USB C/TB3 monitors. (as Thunderbolt is a combination of these PCie and TB signals)
The simple cord didnt need a box because it didnt need to add signals.

@@dee_wade Wow, this is an old comment. Sorry, but you are wrong here. You'd be right, if we were talking about a laptop that was equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port, but this one in fact is not. While this machine does have an Intel CPU and chipset that should be able to provide Thunderbolt 3 capabilities, Lenovo unfortunately decided to only equip the USB-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) with DisplayPort Alt mode that can talk DisplayPort 1.2. It's right there in the specs for the machine, and is why there isn't a Thunderbolt symbol next to the port. The port in fact does not support Thunderbolt or any accessories that require Thunderbolt protocol.
The adapter he tried to use is the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 / Mini DisplayPort cable, so it had no chance of working at all on this machine, as it requires Thunderbolt protocol negotiation to function at all. That being said, I have in fact used that exact Apple adapter on an Intel non-Mac laptop that does have Thunderbolt 3 on it, and it worked for both the DisplayPort functionality, as well as for attaching a Thunderbolt 2 audio interface, though not both at the same time of course. That being said, yes, the adapter can be very finicky on what Intel machines it works on.
Also, I'd like to add that until Ryzen 6000 came out in 2022 with USB4 support, Any AMD CPU based laptop could not have Thunderbolt at all, and even on the 6000 series it's not available on most laptops due to bugs. On a lot of the 7000 series laptops that are just now coming out, it's working great though. Since AMD CPUs makes up almost 1/3 of all non-Mac laptop sales, and a lot of the lower end Intel CPU based laptops forgo Thunderbolt for cost, stating that most USB-C equipped laptops support Thunderbolt is just wrong.

Ah, that cable is rated for 4K, so you can probably get about 25 Gb/s with the 10-bit RGB. That's very impressive. If you get the 8K rated ones (it's literally labeled and gold plated), they have a rating of about 32 Gb/s because of the HBR3 (high bit rate) standard. I ordered one for my RTX, because I can't find a video with anyone testing it. Nice video. Most people are underselling this type of cable by saying, "the standard DisplayPort is better." Absolutely not. :)

I use a Samsung 4K freesync monitor with with my desktop, but I typically run my games at 1440p anyway, and I really want to try pushing the Legion 5 to 1440 to see if the performance is comparable since everything else about the computer is pretty much superior to my current build.

I ran some FPS at 1440p and got consistently high numbers by what I remember, but most things didn't hit 60 frames (depending on how intensive the game was). So the best midpoint basically was like 1440p at 60hz which gave me mid level (35-50 fps) in some of the fast paced games. 4K is possible but not ideal.

It does not but it has to support displayport. It doesn’t matter if thunderbolt or usb-c. A usb c port can support DisplayPort but doesn’t have to. Depends on what the manufacturer implemented. It can also support charging but again, depends on the manufacturer if he put a good usb-c port into device or not. The only thing that is guaranteed to work is data. Everything else you have to look up on a data sheet about the laptop. Btw with thunderbolt its the same. Not every thunderbolt port supports charging or displayport.

I tried connecting it to my Lenovo Legion 5 laptop via the hdmi cable came with the monitor
    But
the display is showing no input
I tried many solutions on the internet (
Rebooting, reconnecting, installing the latest drivers, selecting the right input etc..) unfortunately nothing worked
    So
I tried the same monitor but on my brother desktop to check if it working
And it worked (both via hdmi and dp) next
I tried to connect my laptop to my brother's monitor
Via hdmi as it's the only port that's available ont he both devices
    But it too didn't work
    Same (showing no input)
So now I ordered a dp to usb c cable
But incase it didn't work, what should I do :0?

Hello, you have helped me alot. I am thinking of buying a external monitor for my lenovo legion y530 with 1050ti card, 60hz laptop screen. My main concerns were if 144hz would be enabled and if freesync would work. Now i think i am gonna buy the same LG but in 24" because of its monitor menu, where hz and gsync is set very easily. One last thing, my laptop has an extra mini displayport output. Should i get the same cable as you or get a display to mini display port cable?
