Thank you Jeanette for this video. Just what I needed. So many tutorials take you step by step through the piecing of the quilt and making the quilt sandwich then leave you to “quilt as you like”. Well, when you are starting out you don’t know what you like or how to do it. This was an excellent start and can we now have simple instructions as to how to do the actual quilting eg what to do with the threads when you start and finish etc as well as some basic free motion quilting . Thank you again.
Hi there, i am just so thrilled that you popped up on my screen. I so much want to quilt on my home sewing machine. I have purchased a Walking Foot. My machine came with a bar spacer. I also have a darning foot and am told that this can be used to do free motion quilting by dropping the feed dogs. I look forward to you advice and also look forward to your videos. 🌻
I love the way you mentioned the fact that close quilting makes a quilt stiffer. So many tutorials on quilting don't mention that and a lot of new quilters aren't aware of it. Years ago, I made a mistake by not asking for samples the first time I used a longarm quilter. I didn't know what to ask. The double-sided quilt took me almost 2 months to piece because I had 250 kaleidoscope blocks on one side. She did a tight all over design that came out as stiff as the furniture pads in a moving truck. I had a birthday deadline and no time to fix it. Thanks for reminding people.
I was one of the viewers who wanted to improve my quilting skills on my home sewing machine. 😊 found a few tips today. I needed to " relax a bit" this early evening, so I was happy there was a video from my fave quilting channel. Was tidying my sewing space today and going thru my bins of quilt tops. 😮 I have a lot to quilt, lol. I liked the wavy line /hills pattern you quilted. Might have to use that one. Great job as always.
This is inspiring! I’ve started straight-stitch quilting on my Sashiko 2, but I’m now going to try the wave stitch. I’ve seen it done randomly, but I really like the equidistant rows of stitching. It’s amazing how beautifully the wave stitch enhances a simple rail fence 4-patch with sashing and cornerstones. This is definitely on my list for a quilt retreat gift (we’re leaving a quilt on another’s bed). I can also raid my stash and whip up some quick donation quilts/ throws for my local hospice fundraiser. I’ve been subscribed to your channel for a while. I’m looking forward to catching up on projects where you’ve included the quilting. Thank you, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
Thank you for this video! And the comments make me feel better that I am not the only one with so many unfinished quilts ☺️ One of the biggest challenges I have is managing the bulk of a quilt while quilting on my home sewing machine. Tips on how to make that an easier process would be so appreciated!
Hi Jeanette, Thank you so much for this (and all your) video(s). I am relatively new to quilting and always send my projects out to a long arm quilter. But now I am starting to quilt my projects on my home machine. You are a Godsend. Thank you for all of your valuable tips! You are a blessing!
Another great tutorial Jeanette. Some great tips, I find the quilting seam guide on my walking foot really useful. I’d love more FMQ tutorials as my new Janome has a FMQ stitch regulator and quilting rulers. Uneven stitch length has always put me off FMQ so 🤞🏻2024 is the year I finally start to learn how to FMQ. Looking forward to your next tutorial.
Thank you. I’ve done curvy lines quilting but in organic shapes, and they are so effective. I’ll try those parallel lines in a small project, because l love the result. Your quilts are very pretty and I’m looking forward to see you piecing and quilting new ones.
Thank you for sharing these top tips! I have several quilts that are waiting to get quilted. I am new to all of this and binding, quilting are especially difficult. Look forward to watching more of your videos love them all ❤
What a great video! I learned so much from your video. I have always been a bit skittish when it comes to the quilting part of quilt-making. You have a wonderful way of explaining things that make them seem so easy. They give me the confidence that I can try these methods without fear of making wonky lines. Absolutely love watching your videos! You have an amazing Camera presence!! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your wealth of sewing & quilting knowledge!!
Thank you for your video! I'm a new quilter and was wondering that that funny piece of metal was that came with machine ... I'll be using it tomorrow with the walking foot to finish diamond quilting the case cover I'm making for my 1949 Featherweight! (Will post picture when project is complete!) Thank you!!!
Thank you Jeanette! I really appreciate your explanations. I dread quilting on my home machine but I’m going to try your suggestions and try to be more patient with myself! LOL
Hi from South Africa. Thanks for this video. I've watched hundreds of videos you are the very first person to actually say that alot of quilting makes for a harder or stiffer quilt. Great advise. I'm now seeing people are quilting on the back of "minky" or fleece with no batting for a softer quilt... But they never said why😅
I will love to learn from you, Jeanette . I have tried a few times to quilt on my machine but tear it back out. I know to increase the stitch, use walking foot but I seem to have trouble with keeping the stitching length the same down the top.
Hi Linda, we asked Jeanette and she said - Sounds like the machine is skipping stitches which is most probably the needle. Put in a new needle and use a quilting needle 80 or universal one sized at least 80/12 - with a lighter weight needle the machine may be having trouble going over places where there is more bulk, so a stronger needle should help.
Jeanette I so enjoy your videos, I’m currently machine quilting one of my quilts. I limit myself to no more than three flimsy at a time. Machine quilting is my least favourite part, but necessary to keep the cost in perspective for my hobby. Thanks for sharing your methods and look forward to learning more. Thanks again 👍❤️🙂
I always enjoy your videos. And yes, how to quilt the quilt is always the point where I stop to think of just the perfect design. These were great suggestions.
Thank you so much for this video and undertaking this series! I am a layperson when it comes to quilting my own projects but would really like to begin. I am so excited to learn how to complete my projects start to actual finish. 😊 My quilting skills stop at mug rugs; I am looking forward to all of the knowledge you will be sharing!
Thank you for a really great video. It was really good to watch and listen to you explain. I'm going to have a go at some straight line stitching. Thank you.
Hi Jeanette - another great explainer video - thank you so much. I’m definitely up for a bit of sewing-along and adding to my straight line quilting skills - not ready for free-motion yet! Could you talk a bit more about threads in a future video? I am a new quilter (long time garment maker) and am very consistent in using 50wt cotton thread in my piecing, but tend to reach for my stash of sew-all gutermann threads for any quilting. What do you use?
Thanks a lot for a fabulous video. I do want to learn more about quilting on home machine. I normally do stitch in the ditch but I have not managed to anything else.
Very helpful video! I really like to see the quilting being done. I’m looking forward to following this series. Also, I’m very taken by the bench cushion on the shelf behind you. Would you consider doing a tutorial on it? Or could you direct me to the pattern?
Thank you so much for sharing. I am a rather a self taught new quilter. I have found your channel so helpful. I have only finished two quilts with straight line stitch. I like your curvy lines and didn’t realize I could use my walking foot and guide to achieve that look. The quilt I am working on at the moment turned out smaller than I wanted so I am going to try to add a 3” border. I do have a question though, the top design is Rail fence and I’m going to straight line quilt, but do you also quilt the border that I am adding, or does it matter. Thank you again Jeanette. Your instructions were very clear.
Hi Dee, Jeanette said: You can quilt the border if you wish, or leave it if it looks ok without quilting, especially if it’s only a narrow. However, I would recommend looking at the instructions of the wadding/batting you are using as it will state how far apart you should quilt and use that as a guide. I often quilt the centre first then stand back and decide what else needs to be done. A simple framing border is quick and may just help give you quilt a bit of an extra ‘lift’. I’ve done a tutorial on how to do it. It’s amazing what a bit of texture can do. Glad you’re finding the tutorials helpful. Please send us a photo when you’re done!
Thank you for another really informative video! Your posts are turning into my favourite TV shows 😂 would it be possible to share the links for the products you talked about please as I had a quick look in the shop and wasnt sure I could see the same things. 😊
Thanks for the tips, and yes…..please consider free motion tips in the future. And can you address tension issues and how to avoid eyelashing on the back???
Jeanette, thank you for all this information. A question, when using a stencil, such as the one on the whole page, looks to be about 8x10, how do I place it so the quilting looks continuous? If I place it in the center, how do I move the stencil so the lines of quilting do not look as though I did the stencil and beside it another same stencil. I hope you understand my question. Thank you.
Hello, We asked Jeanette your question and here was her reply - Choose a stencil that has a continuous design, it should have a start and end points which you align to repeat the pattern. Even if the pattern isn’t continuous just place it in a way that offsets the design slightly, by the time you’ve finished quilting it should be more difficult to see the individual pattern. I sometimes draw a free hand swirl or line to connect patterns if it looks as though the design needs it. If you’re unsure draw out your idea first on to paper to see how it looks - be creative and have fun.
Hello, Yes - we did a reveal video here: ua-cam.com/video/kQLHdkTL_oI/v-deo.html and the block tutorial is in the description. It's called Jacob's Ladder.
Hello, Yes, Jeanette has a Brother V3 and use it to quilt smaller projects, she uses ‘edge to edge’ quilting patterns mostly but you can get ones that quilts blocks in different sizes. Search for ‘quilting designs for embroidery machines’ rather than embroidery designs.

Thank you, Jeanette. This is a wonderful and helpful tutorial. Your quilts are lovely. I love all the quilting designs that you chose. ❤😊
Very cool ideas. I'm going to try the wavy mountains next
These ideas are going to help me a lot. Thank you. I freeze up in my mind when it comes to the quilting.
It's amazing how much there is to learn about quilting . Thank you Jeanette. Very much appreciated learning from you and Katrina 😊.
Thank you for the video. I quilt all my own quilts on a single needle sewing machine.
I love your idea to show show how you quilt the projects! Thank you
Thank you. You’ve encouraged me to do more machine quilting myself.
Thank you for this video! And the comments make me feel better that I am not the only one with so many unfinished quilts ☺️

Oh ho! You've just helped a newbie quilter not make a big mistake! It turns out I now have 3 tops to quilt not two!
You are awesome Jeanette!!! Thank you!! ❤❤
My favorite also! I love the pastels!

Thanks for this tutorial. How do you tie off the threads?
Hi Linda, we are launching another quilting video this evening where Jeanette shows how to tie off threads - so watch this space!
Great vedio. Learned a lot. Imspired to try.
New quilter.

Thank you for this very good tutorial. I really like the quilt on the wall. Is there a pattern for?
Hello, Yes - we did a reveal video here: ua-cam.com/video/kQLHdkTL_oI/v-deo.html and the block tutorial is in the description. It's called Jacob's Ladder.
Thanks Jeanette for your informative video. Was the wavy line quilting done free motion style?
Hi Diana, Jeanette didn’t free motion the wavy lines, She used a straight stitch with the quilt guide.
I always use my domestic sewing machine for all of my quilts.
The challenge for me is managing the bulk of the quilt as I sew.
I have a Brother V3 embroidery machine. I am told that by using a suitable machine embroidery pattern, it is possible to quilt your item???
Hello, Yes, Jeanette has a Brother V3 and use it to quilt smaller projects, she uses ‘edge to edge’ quilting patterns mostly but you can get ones that quilts blocks in different sizes. Search for ‘quilting designs for embroidery machines’ rather than embroidery designs.
I prefer the walking foot for quilting. Works better
What is the name of the pattern for that last quilt? I love those triple stripe blocks.
Hello! Thats called a Rail Fence block / quilt. Jeanette did a tutorial on it at the end of a jelly roll compliation, 17:48 in on this video: ua-cam.com/video/P-AyL0_BoKA/v-deo.htmlsi=wVhswp6wx2f8QJnt
What is the name of.the colorful quilt hanging on wall to your left? It is beautiful.
Hi Jacquie, That's the Jacob's Ladder Quilt. We did a reveal video here: ua-cam.com/video/kQLHdkTL_oI/v-deo.html
what weight of thread do you use to quilt a large quilt
Hello Phyllis, Jeanette uses 50 weight thread for quilting, Gutterman or Aurifil are my favourites.
Never had problem with heat eraser on. Always clean after quilting so no residual
I use a strip of tape for the first line then I quilt using the guide on my pressure foot.
Thank you for the reassuring session. Sometime could you actually sew during the program to show how you maneuver the quilt during actual sewing? Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Hi Dorothy, Thanks for the suggestion. We will definitely show real-time quilting at some point!
Does 505 have a smell?
Yes, you want to use it in a well ventilated room.
Yes
