  • I got quite the surprise in the bathroom! I stopped overnight at Castle Crags State Park in northern California. I hike to the top of the crags for a beautiful view of Mount Shasta.

That was a spectacular view. You worked hard to get those shots. it was 10 miles round trip but you probably did 20 filming. I would love to go there someday.

Castle Crags is just a bit north of where we lived in Buckeye when I was born. Where I live now on a clear day I can see Mount Lassen about 80 miles north of me, and on a very clear day I can see Shasta. To the south of me I can see the Sutter Buttes, which is the smallest mountain range in the world, and is also considered an active volcano but the last time it erupted was about 30,000 years ago. There is volcanic activity to the west if it in Lake County where they run electrical turbines off the geothermal heat. Most people don't realize how many active volcanoes we have here in California. Around Mount Shasta is the oldest known human settlement in this area, dating back to 7,000 years ago. The last time Shasta erupted was 1786 and has a history of erupting every 600 to 800 years. Mount Lassen used to be much larger than it is now. It "exploded", much like Mount St. Helens in 1980, in 1914 and continued to flow till 1921. Evidence of that explosion can still be seen today with volcanic stones strewn as far south as Oroville CA. -- That was a beautiful spider. The ranger didn't say what kind it is?

Maybe that is a large wolf spider. I have huge spiders the size of the palm of a medium-size hand living in my house. The first one I saw was covering my bare foot. It looked like a fancy sandal! I was terrified but quickly learned they were very friendly, never bit me, and are probably eating other, more dangerous, creepy crawlers.

I love seeing Castle Crag on my way up to Oregon but it's such a short view from Highway 5. On my way home from Oregon one time I stopped off and drove up to the parking area. Unfortunately, I can't hike so it was great viewing your hike. You must have been there before the recent fires because I believe 5 was closed at Dunsmuir. I always enjoy your videos. Thanks so much!

WOW! I almost forgot about the 25 pound spider because the hike was so wonderful. The addition of the science of how the ranges formed and fade was a great touch and so were the shots of climbing through the lovely forest to get to those views!!! Oh golly - I gotta get up there - but I'll take hiking poles because at my age, bones don't heal well. Thank you for taking us along on this fantastic day. Also, someone below mentioned your terrific editing job - I've only seen 2 of your videos and that was enough to make me sub. Great work; I am in awe.
