Aloha Misty and Aiden: Glad to see you hosting a vlog of the reminders of home. This vlog brought back so many great memories of the times I dined at Shiros, Waimalu; Zippy’s, McCully; and Jane’s Fountain, Liliha. I am dreaming about the good food of these establishments at the moment. It looks like the places haven’t changed much and are still offering the food we grew-up with. I hope Aiden enjoyed the deliciousness of the fried chicken, and ther chili with rice, which id s gourmet meal for me, at Zippy’s. Thanks for the memories and nostalgia. Aloha Bill! Yes they all haven't changed which is a wonderful thing. I hope they still continue as all thr owners are getting older and the whole economy thing. Aiden only ate thr saimin but took a taste of the chicken. He really likes the chili there but was in the mood for saimin only that day. He also loves the spaghetti. Hope your weekend is a great one. Hi sista. Love Zippy's. I was 10 when they came into existence. The chili is the best. We have Zippy's here in Washington at the cold food section. It's better though if you get it at the restaurant. Hawaiian food so ono. Debbie and I are going to a Luau this Sunday. Our kids & grandkids are all dancing. There are a lot of Hawaiians here in Washington. Take care sis & have a wonderful night.

You'd like sari sari if you like pinakbet. Same taste but more soupy. Everything was ono. I am partial to Shiro's broth. I like it the best but also like Palace Saimin. Shiros has better Teri sticks I think. And more parking.
I went to Rockys a few times when I was younger I was surprised they are still open Im thinking I need to revisit really soon Banana pancakes. Fried rice and coke float Im thinking maybe tomorrow.
Yes revisit! After filming I talked story with the waitress. She said if you come on the weekends gotta go early because there's a line. Weekdays no problem to get a seat. Enjoy!

Oh yeah! You're so right Jourdan! They are precious for sure. Hannara's seriously gives Highway Inn a run for their money. That meal was mean! And $27.
I was wondering if Jane´s Fountain still existed when I clicked on this video. It looks similar to my memories of it from the 50s and 60s. I didn´t see the big turtle shell on the wall that used to hang on the left side. It was still there the last time I was visiting around 2000.
I thought the turtle shell was next door at the original Youngs Fishmarket? I don't remember a turtle shell at Jane's but maybe my memory is bad. The turtle shell at Youngs is now at their new location in Kalihi.
@@FoodFiend No, definitely was at Jane´s Fountain. My extended family lived in the Japanese plantation housing across the street behind the Buddhist Temple. Aloha Lloyd. I do have a manapua man video. Believe it or not manapua is not my favorite food. I rarely eat them but for you I'll try to put something together in July. I won't be here most of June. Thanks for your patience!
@@FoodFiend Had to visit the dr today so finally stopped by to try that sari sari soup and it was really good and yes did come with lots of rice and Mac included , not as much pickle cabbage as you had dining in, but that's ok....Mahalo Misty for introducing that dish!
Aloha Alan! Hannara's is not like a Helenas because they also do Korean food and plate lunch type meals. Whereas Helena's is strictly Hawaiian food only. Hope that helps! 🤙✌️
Oh my😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I have a story to tell you, Misty. Next time we get together. Anyway, I don't eat Zippys chili but love their chicken. Jane's & Rocky's looks ono. I'll have to try Rockys next time I'm in Wapahu. I like these kinds of episodes. Mahalo Misty ♥️ Good eats
Aloha Carol! I think I know your story about Hannara's lol. I think you told me when I invited you. 😂 Yes try Rockys since it's closer to you. The aunties are wonderful. There's parking in the back if no more on the street.
Jane's Fountain is so good. parking is a pain, but if you like old days food, it's the last place on island that makes it. Hamburger Steak is old school and the best on the island. No tasteless premade patties, Real handmade beef. jippy's is nothing like it was when I was young. Food is just a shadow of what it was. Even the chili has no taste to it anymore. At Jane's you get old school kitchen cooking.
I never passed Salt Lake as a child going west. Back then we thought Aiea was far 😂 Now it's normal to go to Kapolei and be stuck in traffic for an hour and half. Auwe. Mr Burger sounds tasty!
Out of the 5 places that you featured Zippy's is the only one that to me has not upheld the quality it once had. Perhaps because there are too many Zippy's whereas the other's are one of a kind (except for Shiro's). Zippy's famous chili and fried chicken to me is missing something that made it the winnahs way back when. That's just my opinion. Seems like every time I order the chili or the fried chicken I find something lacking in the taste.
We did Shiges in the old Wahiawa video and I did 49er in another which is why I said I can't cover everything but you can go to the Nostalgia Playlist if you want to see those. 🤙
Everybody complains about the higher prices like at Zippy's but even if you do marketing at Times everything is expensive. Higher minimum wage, supplies, etc. What you going do?
@@FoodFiend I remember when a can of sardines would go on special for 10 for $1. Now it goes on sale for $1 a can. Zippy's chill frank plate was $2.60 when I would go in the early 70s. Minimum wage was $1.60. Progress!
@@UmaNotaSo yes McDonald's Big Mac and Filet O Fish shrunk for real and you know it. I do t eat fast food anyway anymore. Taste isn't the same since it's probably not pure beef. If anything just for the fries. Still expensive too, so I'd rather give my money to a local business.
Zippys after disco at 4am 😮I can’t believe i said that! LOL Hanara’s looked everyting looked on except da poi. Da poi no can. Runny poi is blasphemy. 😮 Shiro’s no can go wrong rite dea! And the Teri Stick is winnas! Jane’s I never went there but now i gotta go! Great video, well done! See you tonight! Da moped needs to be banged by one Bus!!!
Yeah was watery but still pounded the whole bowl lol. I might not be on tonight because we have late soccer practice then I gotta cook. You guys enjoy!
Love Zippy's and Hanara's. Shiro's also so good won ton mein hits the spot. Still haven't tried Rocky's or Jane's fountain yet, but will do soon 🤙🏽 17:52
We have sooo many options when it comes to food now. So many different cultures and fusions. But these nostalgic dishes and the old school ambiance they're served in is simply comforting in a way no new creation can bring. The flavor profiles and presentation (i love the old style thick off-white diner dish ware) seems hard to come by and fun when i come across it. So hungry right now, would order ANY of these and know exactly what i'm getting....tried and true satisfaction 🤙🤤🫶.
Yes so many options nowdays that we forget about these humble places. But it seemed like people still went. It was refreshing to see a younger couple take their 2 kids to Jane's for dinner. They came in after us and sat down. There was also a couple with a younger child at Rockys and plenty of folks at Shiros after work. So it's nice to see newer parents pass on the old school foods to their kids!
@@FoodFiend An hour after watching this i was sitting in a booth at Jane's Fountain. Saimin with beef sticks and Chinese hot mustard for breakfast, ono! Totally going back. I saw a young couple there with their toddler aged kids and thought the same thing, like "Cool, these kids are gonna know what old school local food and culture is about!". 👍😊!
Huge portions on Hawaiian plate at Hannara's. Jane's Fountain looked so good! Except for parking, I would be there tomorrow. Will do take out!
Yes so good! I'd probably frequent Hannara's often if it wasn't so far away. Yes please try Janes even for takeout.

@FoodFiend Oh I did, wasn't sure. 🤦♀️
@@carolpohina3798 no worries was only the short version you gotta tell me the juicy details next time 😂
Haven't been Hannara's in awhile, same for Shiro's. My personal fave offering from Shiro's is Do Don Pa +cheeseburger. Maika'i no, Misty!
Mahalo Harry! Still tastes the same and brings back the good old days. 🤙
I'm a fatty and i think the b roll of the baked goods in the beginning was too short. LOL
🤣 yes I know you love your pastries. 🍰🍩
I tried the Zippys in Las Vegas!
Awesome! I hope it was the same as at home. 👍🤙
Yes Jane's is one of my favorites. All the food on the menu whatever you pick is tasty and made with love.
I remember going to Mr burger was next to pizza hut in pearl city in 75 76
I never passed Salt Lake as a child going west. Back then we thought Aiea was far 😂 Now it's normal to go to Kapolei and be stuck in traffic for an hour and half. Auwe. Mr Burger sounds tasty!
Surprised Forty Niners didn't make the list. They been around forever, Zippys isn't the same as it used to be
I've been there twice and just my opinion was meh. Maybe I picked the wrong stuff.
49ers is a bit pricey
Out of the 5 places that you featured Zippy's is the only one that to me has not upheld the quality it once had. Perhaps because there are too many Zippy's whereas the other's are one of a kind (except for Shiro's). Zippy's famous chili and fried chicken to me is missing something that made it the winnahs way back when. That's just my opinion. Seems like every time I order the chili or the fried chicken I find something lacking in the taste.
I feel that way about L& L's. So inconsistent and junk now.
I don't frequent Zippys too much, but whenever I go to me it still tastes good. I understand your opinion though.
You gotta get the Donpa LOL
Too huge for my stomach! But it is an awesome array of toppings!
Luncheon meat sandwich from Jane's fountain.
Janes fountain old fashion burgers mean broke da mouth.
Great reports but why in the world are you eating Saimin with a fork?? Especially at Jane’s Fountain no less.
I'm not eating saimin at Jane's. Its sari sari. The lady never give chopsticks at Shiros.
You're so beautiful and your personality is awesome 🫵🥹🤌
I don't feel that way but thank you for the compliment.
you forgot shiges in wahiawa and 49ers in aiea
We did Shiges in the old Wahiawa video and I did 49er in another which is why I said I can't cover everything but you can go to the Nostalgia Playlist if you want to see those. 🤙
that asian gal eating the saimin at the beginning of your vid......Jade Moon, former news anchor of then Ch9 KGMB on Kapiolani blvd.
Yes I picked it out of all the commercials because she spoke as the guest speaker at my high school graduation. 🤙
Shiros is different I’m told
I like it. Still had people eating at 3 pm.
Goes to show only in America where people free people thrive and their businesses.. America!!
14:42 Rainbow Drive-in👍
How come we can't see Aiden LOL
He's coming to that age where he doesn't want to be on camera and doesn't want to say anything. He'd rather be playing his game. 🤣
Everybody complains about the higher prices like at Zippy's but even if you do marketing at Times everything is expensive. Higher minimum wage, supplies, etc. What you going do?
Yep. Dats ok. They can complain and starve while I enjoy my plate lunch. Price rises are inevitable.
@@FoodFiend I remember when a can of sardines would go on special for 10 for $1. Now it goes on sale for $1 a can. Zippy's chill frank plate was $2.60 when I would go in the early 70s. Minimum wage was $1.60. Progress!
@@UmaNotaSo $2.60 in the early 70s is about a little over $16. So same price pretty much these days for a plate lunch.
@@FoodFiend it seems that McDonald's isn't as proportional or is it?
@@UmaNotaSo yes McDonald's Big Mac and Filet O Fish shrunk for real and you know it. I do t eat fast food anyway anymore. Taste isn't the same since it's probably not pure beef. If anything just for the fries. Still expensive too, so I'd rather give my money to a local business.
I wouldn't call Jane's Fountain "nostalgic and old world charm", as the place is literally falling apart. But the local food does look good.
You have to be local and experience coming to these places as a child to understand...
We have to support these treasures or they will disappear faster. It’s called Aloha.😊
Zippys after disco at 4am 😮I can’t believe i said that! LOL
Hanara’s looked everyting looked on except da poi. Da poi no can. Runny poi is blasphemy. 😮
Shiro’s no can go wrong rite dea!
Do you pay
1:03 zippy's 👎
talk talk talk
Too bad Zippy’s has gotten so over priced with smaller portions and poorer quality. Shrinkflation.
Love Zippy's and Hanara's. Shiro's also so good won ton mein hits the spot. Still haven't tried Rocky's or Jane's fountain yet, but will do soon 🤙🏽 17:52
Awesome! I hope you like them when you try em! Both Rockys and Jane's is ono to me no matter what you get. 🤙
@@ripleylv426. I'm so glad you went!
