My auntie used to work at Medeiros Optical Service (where our family got our glasses) on Fort St. Mall when I was a kid, and I have many memories of walking around with my mom and shopping at Woolworth, Kress, the comic book shop, etc. How things have changed since then! I also worked at Hawai'i Pacific University one semester in the 1990s, so I ate at many places on Fort St. Mall. A lot has changed since then, too, but I like to eat there when I'm downtown, and my favorite thing to get is still the garlic chicken at Fort St. Cafe! Thanks for sharing the other 'ono grinds we can get there. Always reasonable prices and satisfying!
Wow. What a throwback. I do remember the Woolworths and I liked looking at the arts and crafts section as a kid. I remember Marugame was a Jack In The Box and also was a Wendy's for a short while. It was much dirtier then. Now it's surprisingly clean and more business like. Mahalo again for commenting and watching!
Watched this video last night and went to Fort Street Cafe today. Got the garlic chicken & panang curry combo. I love thai curry but usually get the green one because I love eggplant. This combo was delish! Garlicky & coconutty goodness! I've seen other videos on this place but yours is what enticed me. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, I remember when the piroski shop opened up. It was so weird and random, totally out of place. I always stopped there when I when I got comics. Loved the fried piroski!
Wow…Fort Street Mall is full of great places to eat!!! Place sure has changed since I was last there, about 20+ years ago…lol. Another great video 🫶🏻🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🫶🏻
Yes still got some shady characters but fairly safe during the daytime. Lots of security guards roaming around. There's tons of great places to eat there for the office workers. 😊
Thanks for this awesome downtown eats video, Misty! I haven't worked downtown for years and just started working down there again. I'm so happy to hear that Rada's is still there! Keep up the great work! Aloha, Linda 🤙🌺🤙
Mahalos Misty, sometimes im pressed for time in downtown and really enjoy all your videos. Will definitely try some of these next time im working in downtown. Always trying to support the local eateries.
Giving a bit of history makes me appreciate Fort Street Mall more, and showing the parking is VERY much appreciated for those of us who don’t frequent the area. All the food looks great, and now that I know where to SAFELY park, I will check out the area some day! Thanks! >^.^
You're welcome! I also use this parking lot to go to Maunakea Market. It isn't really a far walk for both ways (east or west) and easier to exit out of than Maunakea Municipal Parking Lot.
@@FoodFiend The Maunakea parking lot is scary! I would enjoy the slightly longer walk, too - got to get some steps in to work off all the food, right? 😁
Aloha Misty!! Wow so many eats. We didn’t know a lot about Fort Street so mahalo for sharing not only the eats but the history as well. Absolutely appreciate the parking tip as parking can definitely be a challenge. Added numerous more spots onto our massive list. From the crispy garlic chicken, to the the curry, to the tonkatsu, to the Filipino food, pierogi, and everything else….😋 Doner’s controversy doesn’t seem like a deal breaker to us so would love to try it too since we love Greek flavors. Mahalo for showcasing all these great spots!! Have a great week ahead!!
Aloha Michelle & Jose! Yes the never ending restaurants here will make your list never end LOL. The city owned parking garages are great and inexpensive. I think I was there for maybe an hour and a half and it was only $1.50. They've got so many nation's foods on one walkway it's amazing! Thanks as always for watching and commenting! Have a great week as well!
Another great find. I always wondered how to get to that underground parking lot! Looks fairly clean and bright. That tonkatsu looks pretty good and different from other places like you said. Want to try it out soon and the other Fort Street Mall places
When I was a boy, my dad had a shop on Fort Street Mall, and I had my favorites back then. There are a lot of mediocre places around there, but it's great that you seem to have picked some of the best. I still miss the Eagle Cafe at the Blaisdell Hotel (George, the owner, died, and his son took over, then moved to Nimitz. I think that there's no relation to the "New Eagle Cafe" of nowadays). It's also nice to know there's a Marugame down there so we don't have to brave the lines in Waikiki for that.! Great work!
Ah what wonderful memories. Did you know the old Blaisdell Hotel sign is still up? Doesn't look like the lights function but they didn't take it down. Interesting to see they were the ones who moved to Nimitz. I think they're definitely owned by someone else now as they offer more Filipino food. Miss the old biscuits with strawberry jam there. That's off the menu now.
@FoodFiend Believe it or not, I actually used to love their turkey sandwich and iced tea! Yeah, I was a boring kid, but at least I ate healthy back then. 😀
I've only ever heard about doner shack from the controversies stuffs but looks so good! I might stop by soon (right by the office). I was just saying this weekend how much I wanna try the rotating donor kebab meat after seeing it on tv. didn't know we had it so close to work.
I don't think we have eaten any restaurants on Fort Street. Looks like the street is quiet and clean, and the foods you chose look delicious. It must be taken a long time to edit this one. Great job, Misty.
Aloha Young! Yes it's pretty clean compared to the 80s and 90s. Before it was quite dirty with lots of homeless. They are around more more down Hotel Street. It's not so bad in the day time.
Great video Misty! Brings back memories of pre-retirement days. Fridays were usually reserved for Fort Street Cafe. That sweet little lady, would come outside to take orders if the line was long. I've had a few pirosckis from Rada's. I learned the hard way - limit to one or suffer the consequences after lunch. 😉 On Alakea, I liked Waterdrop Vegeterain House for their tasty plant-based plates.
Mahalo Mark! Yes I was going to try the vegetarian place and do a compilation of that block with Alakea Steak and another one of Union Square. I'm not sure when I'll get to it because I'm so lazy. 🤣 yes one piroscki is good enough. I'd have consequences too 🤣🤣
Aloha Misty: Thank you for the journey down my childhood shopping area! I still have great memories of the Woolworths, Kress and Long’s . My favorite eateries were the counters at Kress and Woolworth. I enjoyed seeing the great varieties for the office crowd. The ramen must have been great that day! Best rushes and King Hee Faat Choy to you and Aiden! 🧧 Best wishes fellow 🐯!
Aloha Bill! I remember Wooleorths. Both on Hotel St and Ala Moana. I liked looking at the craft section as a kid. Unfortunately the one on Hotel St is a Ross Dress For Less as you can see. I remember the counters where you could order foor at Woolworths. Such great memories! Have a great weekend and Happy Chinese New Year! 🤙😊
I love Fort Street Cafe! Vince and Allison are the best and they both have the most amazing memories! Favorites are garlic chicken curry combo with veggie curry and sticky rice (extra charge for the sticky rice), tuna rolls with peanut sauce, Pad Thai with garlic chicken and garlic chicken and garlic chicken with spring rolls on rice noodles. Yum!
Looked so good I ended up going there for lunch today. Had all my usuals plus the iced coffee (very strong so make sure to let the ice melt) and their bao buns. As usual everything was great. Can’t wait to see where you go next!
That was a nice food trip down Fort Street Mall. Everything looked tasty. Never been to Marugame Udon. Looking forward to this less crowded location. Have a nice weekend.
Great job again on the video! I love it when you do multiple locations. The Filipino food looked ono as well as the Donner Shack! Hope to see you tonight! Peace!
Thanks Brian! I'll try my best as I'm having a hard time with my voice and coughing/breathing. I'm stubborn though and still light up. I'll try my best to stay awake and join you guys.
I attended HPU in the early 2000s my classes were in Fort Street Mall this video brings back many memories. There was a placed called Korean Sushi. Had the best kimchee fried rice on the island. Great video 🤙🙏
Aw thanks for sharing your memories. We used to play at a club called the Fast Zone near Fort Street Cafe. And I remember a Korean place next to Fort Street Cafe where I'd get small bentos. Wonder if that's the same place. I looked for it for this video but it's gone now. 😪
Yummy Marugame ! So nice to see Fort Street changing and having great restaurants available ! It is really nice ! Thank you for sharing Misty ! Delicious plate lunches !
I love your Ala Wai shirt 😂 I was thinking almost the same. I wanted to pour that curry over the rice...lol. I love shredded cabbage w/sashimi too. So yum. That last place looks so good. I just don't have a need to go to town much. Still excited for you & Pono to do Indian😉😂❤️
Thanks Carol! I think the shirt is funny. Someone once asked me where the team I swim for is at. And I'm like you're definitely not from here...🤣 I saw Pono yesterday and we planned it officially so Indian food soon! But unfortunately it's also in town.
Hi there! Enjoyed your tour around Fort Street Mall. 😃 My daughter works at the Pioneer Plaza. Both my kids enjoy that Tonkatsu place. Working there for 20 years now, she’s tried the whole gamut. She doesn’t cook so…🍽️🥣 I’m visiting now so we’ve met up with her for 😋 lunch. Thank you for these many adventures. 🏢🍽️🌴

I understand not going there. It's kinda a place you'd have to do business or work there to hang around the area. Too bad they sold thr Char Hing Sut building. Wonder what it's going to be. 🤔 Let me know what you think when you do hit up those places 😊🤙
Hi Misty , another interesting vid with a little history and the foodie places. Your T-Shirt , Ala Wai with the skeleton swimmer , I had a laugh. So if you swim in the Ala Wai canal your t-shirt could mean you end up dead ! Don’t worry , I won’t swim there 🤣 Looking forward to your next vid Cheers Rod 🤙
Aloha Misty!!! A big Mahalo for covering this area!! Im embarassed that I have only walked the Fort Street Mall for the 1st time a cpl months ago because I needed to drop something off at Fed Ex and parked near J. Dolans. And that was thoughtdul of you to go over the parking with your viewers. We saw Fort Street Cafe and now we will go. That Tonkatsu looked really good and the Doner Shack.. aww a little controversy doesnt hurt sales. And his greek shop reminded me of Athens food and shaving the meat off is what I saw in Athens and Jordan. So youre right.. quite similar and Ill check it out. Mahalo for another great review🤙❤️
Mahalo Sean 🤙 No worries. I think if you don't work in the area or catch bus then most people wouldn't be here. But there are tons of food options. I'd like to hear your thoughts on Fort Street Cafe and Döner Shack!
HI Sista. Love your Alawai canal shirt. Is it still toxic? Debbie as a child used to catch tropical fish for her fish tank there. The pork katsu looks very Ono. Take care Sis, talk to you soon.
Aloha Mark and Debbie! Yeah the Ala Wai is still nasty. I think there's only tilapia and barracuda in there. No tropical fish. The pork tonkatsu was very good! Take care and have a great weekend. God bless!
Really appreciate the history of Fort Street. Could we get more history of other places you visit for the food, and/or maybe the history of the food itself? Just asking. Your food reviews are good enough but adding a bit of history would make watching much more enjoyable.
miss misty yes i always forget names yet grateful shared your food find there ive ate a few an enjoyed when i lived there wish could have tried the others before left a grin each time see wear an new shirt design . really liked the ala Wai canal marathon swimmer t shirt. be happy an well
YO MISTY!!!!! what up what up!!!! I have been friggin sick and traveling. Just now over both. lol. My Gal Pal and I just ate us some Udon yesterday. It was so good. Her being Japanese, she knows where to go get the good stuff in Dallas. I always tell her she's the best after such a meal. lol!!!
Hey Mike! Sorry you're sick. I still don't have my voice. I had a small cold in December and it became a sinus infection. Still coughing from post nasal drip and tired of it. 😟 Your girlfriend knows the good spots! She is the best! Have a great weekend and hope you feel better!
@@FoodFiend thats what I head. A vicious sinus infection. I had it for 2 weeks and my nose was bleeding. My voice went as well. Then week 3 it went away but I was a snotty mess, I guess from healing up. Everyone here had it. Yea, I think my gal pal needs to video log about where to eat Japanese in DFW. We are funny together, I could turn into a comedy show with food. LOL.
I'm not sure how clean it is as I haven't been there in years, but there is a restroom at McDonald's? Not sure if you need a code. If really desperate you can go to any floor of the Alakea Courthouse. They have clean bathrooms on every floor. Just have to go through the metal detection machine. They don't ask why you're there. Too bad Walmart is not there anymore. I'm sure they had bathrooms.
when i was working downtown it was whats for lunch i remember going to the original radas they had a lunch special fried squid with a piroski n the udon at marugame is ono miss this thai lunch place yumyum thai that was my fav they closed long ago
Politics aside, Doner shack is terrible. The place is so dirty and one time my wife found a whole dead roach on her food. Like straight up a whole dead roach. All your other recs are spot on!
It happens. It is an open kitchen and doesn't appear dirty. I've had hair in my food and my friend even had maggots in his prime rib at Ray's. Mistakes are made. But I respect your opinion. 🤙
Never occurred to me to question why it's called Fort St. Always like when you share historical facts 👍. But i wonder what fur the Russian fur traders were looking for? We only get rat, bat, and mongoose if you can catch em...."Ooo gurl, whatchu wearing?" "Dis one mongoose stole wit matching rat lined boots and bat hat." 🤔😅. The area is definitely a hub for food, everything looked ono!
🤣🤣🤣 yeah I don't know what they were catching. Unless they were just trading fur already caught somewhere else. Makes me sing "Apple bottom jeans. Mongoose boots with da fur...🎶🎵" mongoose is my spirit animal. Small but angry. Or a sloth...if I had my way I'd eat and sleep all day.
@@FoodFiend 🤣🤣 yeah but then they were in the wrong market to trade fur, "Brah, nah. So hot over here especially when get Kona winds, your fall line...look itchy 😰." Lol @ small and angry spirit animal, mongoose for me too then, yes to sloth 🤣!
Made by Filipino's now at Vicki's restaurant near the McDonald's. The piroscki's are smaller now than what it used to be. Rada's used to be located near the Fort Street Cafe. Don't know if the original owner went back to her home country. I recall her saying she was from Ukraine. Her fried squid is good too.
I think that was misinterpreted without seeing the punctuation. Lol. I meant "There was a really long line, despite what people say. Don's a really friendly guy." But some people complain about him on UA-cam comments, Reddit and Yelp. But I have had no bad experiences there at all. 🤷🏻♀️
Chinese Dates can be found in most Oriental Markets and some Crack Seed Store.., definitely at Longs Drugs in the Oriental Food aisle.. if you can remember those little chocolate footballs given out during Halloween and can be had for Longs Drugs also or other department stores Walmart, Target, etc.... their foil covered and reminiscent of tiny Foot Ball shape.., Chinese Date are comparable in size , bright Red in color and about 6-8 in a package innocuous in looks or smell.... However it adds a.... distinct flavor and taste that cause one to think "what is that"...? Don't forget the Parsley..., google the Dinners Drive-Ins - and Dives version and watch the local chef work his magic... Then holo-holo on down to Peral City Bowl for a taste...! You'll never be the same, pricey now I bet, but larger Ox Tail and Broke Da Mouth at least for me..... OH by the way there are certain secrets technics some cooks perform before throwing them all together... Guarrens ball bearings going change your mind proper authentic Chinese style OX Tail Soup.... take a friend
@lestoyama5323 thanks for the tip. I make my own in my IP and did a video on it. I use tangerine peel and do things a bit differently. Your's sounds good. I'll try em but maybe when it gets colder outside lolm thanks!
🤣 I'm not sure about sexy. Sounds like I smoke 5 packs of cigarettes a day! I finally got my voice back last week thankfully! Thanks for the well wishes.
It used to be. Now it is surprisingly not bad and cleaner than it used to be and has security guards everywhere. The homeless people are more Ewa of Bethel Street...Fort Street Mall is very long and extends all the way to Ala Moana Blvd...so you're just talking about the part between Beretania and Hotel Street. 🤷♀

Aloha Jimicrack! I'm glad you like my shirt lol. 😊😊
LOL.
Yes please do videos. I'd subscribe!
Mahalo Misty! 🤙🏼
Mahalo for watching! 🤙😊
Whoa..food looks ono! What prevents me from frequenting the area, is the availability (or lack of) clean restrooms. Any insight on this? 🤔
I'm sure they had bathrooms.
when i was working downtown it was whats for lunch i remember going to the original radas they had a lunch special
fried squid with a piroski
n the udon at marugame is ono miss this thai lunch place yumyum thai that was my fav they closed long ago
Ah too bad I didn't get to try Yum Yum Thai. Rada's still has the lunch special with squid 🐙
Great video. Informative and well done. Add in the cost of the dishes would be ideal. Otherwise mahalo for your hard work.
Yeah usually in most my videos I will add the price unless it's a fancy restaurant. Just so busy I forgot to do that here. Mahalo for the comment. 🤙
What park are you eating at?
Dats secret squirrel.
@@ripleylv426. ua-cam.com/video/9DcVNNExvNU/v-deo.html
Speaking of mongoose LOL
@@FoodFiend WTH this was hilarious! Fo' real lol kine 🤣🤣! "Shi shi bag..." 😭! Dude had a howizter to take down basically one jumbo rat!
@@ripleylv426. LOL he just came out with another one. Hilarious.
I gave a piroscki from Rada's Piroscki to a Russian and he said it was better than what he had in Russia. :D
Wow that's amazing! 😮
My food jealous level is back to 9.5🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
🤣 I'm sure you can whip up some good food since there's no goof restaurants out there
@@FoodFiend feeling lazy today didn't want to cook.
19:59 “Despite what people say, Don’s a really friendly guy.”
😳Oh MAN, what are people saying about the guy???
…😂
I think that was misinterpreted without seeing the punctuation. Lol. I meant "There was a really long line, despite what people say. Don's a really friendly guy." But some people complain about him on UA-cam comments, Reddit and Yelp. But I have had no bad experiences there at all. 🤷🏻♀️
@@FoodFiend
Well, if the food is good, the food is good. And like you said, keep politics out of it …and juss grind.👍🏽

🥰😍
🤙✌🌈🌺
We don't mix food and politics. LOL
Word Walter!
I just ate some none amusing hibachi and so so roasted duck 😢😢😢😢😢
Oh no! 😔
@@FoodFiend Oh Yes!😢
Misty, you got sexy voice in this video😅.. I hope you feel better.
🤣 I'm not sure about sexy. Sounds like I smoke 5 packs of cigarettes a day! I finally got my voice back last week thankfully! Thanks for the well wishes.
expensive.
Don't go then.
Fort street mall is a nasty place
Smells so bad there 🤢
It used to be. 🤷♀
So many good eats ckoseby. Se just checked out Doner shacks new location. Both were good
Yes so much in a close area. I gotta now move to the Italian place you shown near Merchant St lol. Great to hear Doner Shack has expanded!
