Wallow, wallow, nostalgically ... I have an isolated childhood memory of watching a train run along this railway, shortly before it closed. It seems incredible that its potential as a tourist attraction wasn't recognised, as a decade later it surely would have been, Imagine the trip, a haul up the inclines from Whatstandwell and all the way to Buxton taking in the expansive landscapes of mid-Derbyshire. I take some comfort from the preservation of the trackbed as a cycle-track, but all the same .... How short-sighted can you get!

Thank you for scanning and uploading this film!
It is great to see the C&HP as a working railway rather than the fan trips at the end.

That's superb - I've worked all my career at the Health & Safety Laboratory which is sited on the C&HP and the history of the line fascinates me. So good to see it when it was in use. Thank you.

Delightful footage, thanks for posting and kudos to your Granddad - mine would never have done this! I spent many happy years cycling this route in the 80's and 90's, I really love it up there.

A fascinating film. I remember seeing a steam train as it crossed the road-bridge at Longcliffe; that was in 1958 and I was aged 8. I have recently walked it; I was amazed at the tight bends, particularly that at Gotham. Thanks for uploading.

Thank you John for your kind words. For some reason my grandfather only ever shot one reel of film (he wasn't a wealthy man and I wonder if the cost of film may have been prohibitive).

I rode the route from Cromford to Beyond Parsley Hay last week. This film is brilliant, thank you. Is is such a shame that the line closed (with the loss of many livelihoods) but, I have to say, that without that loss we would not have such a fantastic resource today

Historic, thanks for putting it up. Amazing how good the track was for a minor mineral line.

Just at 4.40 is where we went to see the last train run across Mouldridge Lane. Thank you to both you and your Grandfather for this great piece of film.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the film. Its just a shame that he didn't have a camera with sound, that would have been truly amazing!

What great footage of a unique railway. Thanks for sharing......
@5'-38s there is a view back from the Brake van down the track. There appears to be a short length of 'checkrail' on the right hand rail only, what would be the purpose of it?

For anyone interested in the C&HPR, there's a report of an 1880 journey along the entire route here: goyt-valley.org.uk/over-the-high-peak-railway/
