When beginning artists draw something complicated like hands from observation it doesn't help to think of the names of the things you're trying to draw, like "fingers" and "fingernails".
So what does go through an artist's mind when they draw hands? I can't speak for everyone, but I suspect these are the similar thoughts that help all artists draw hands realistically from observation.
