  • Album review of Opeth's new album Pale Communion + 3 reasons why you should give this album a chance if you weren't interested by it.
Opeth take us once again to their prog-rock world with an album that is certainly musically influenced by bands such as King Crimson, Goblin and Camel, but also shows a lot more of their own style, reminiscent of their earlier works. An excellent release that exceeded my expectations.

Well spoken review. I thought this was a stunning album. I respect others who don't like it, but often they try and compare it to Blackwater Park or Still Life. Why not albums by Genesis or Yes? Let's compare apples to apples. As Mikael has stated on numerous occasions, they record music they love and love to play. If it sells, great. An artist has to always please themselves first. If they made a record they didn't have their heart behind it would show in the final product. Their passion for classic prog with an Opethian twist is clear in both Heritage and Pale Communion. I hope they continue to stretch the boundaries of what they want to explore on future albums. I think they're just getting started.

Agreed. It's probably just the beginning and you gotta give massive props to the band for doing what they like while knowing perfectly well it might not sell so great.
      Thanks for your comment!

Great review man. You make perfect points about how everyones reacted since this new sort of direction. That being said I was skeptical at first, I listened to and enjoyed the album. But If you listen to it expecting more of the same Opeth, you won't appreciate what they have done with Pale Communion. (side note and just to keep blabbin lol) Love the death shirt. But its almost funny in a way or ironic, or maybe someting else I can't put words to. Before Chuck Schuldiner made Control Denied, rather than betray what the band Death meant and sounded like to the fans, he opted to create a new band:Control Denied which was his way of seperating the bands. "For me, it is just a matter of evolving, doing it the right way. I didn't put out a Death record with this stuff on it. I made the right choice and changed the name of the band. I tried to do everything the right way." Which is almost what I wish Opeth dead for the same reasons. Personally don't feel its a big deal to seperate them. But maybe people would have been less upset over what they were expecting and what they were getting with Opeths newish style/sound. Just my 2 cents. Have a good one brother hope to see more reviews!

Swedish is my mother tounge, your pronunciation of mikael åkerfeldt was pretty good :) anyway personally I love this album its better than heritage and I like their new direction. Variety is always important!

Good review. I have synonymized listening to Heritage and Pale Communion with listening to Metallica's "Load" and "Reload", in that, its best to listen to them to enjoy a different genre of sound than what you've originally gotten from them in the past. It is kind of like putting on a different band to enjoy a different sound. I wouldn't put in something that sounds like A Perfect Circle to expect to enjoy the sound of Pantera. In the same way, when I am in the mood for some casual vintage rock sound, I can put on Heritage or Pale Communion. When I'm in the mood for some heavier sound with growls and blast beats, I'll choose something out of their first few releases for that. But I can't approach it by trying to enjoy the sound of Deliverance out of Heritage or PC. People say that they should have put that material under a different band name, but I disagree. Both eras are by "Opeth", but go under different albums. "Opeth" is the source artist, and each album are the different projects they create.
