+Abida Babida That's why mangini is so under rated -- many ppl don't understand what he's doing, so discard his stuff as non-nonsensical. He is most likely the most gifted poly rhythmic player on the planet
Mike's enviable ability to play really ear-catching polyrhythms (from about 1:12 onward) during his solo makes him one of the great drummers of this era for me; those parts are really great to watch too!! I love the way he engages the audience too during his solo. A lot of 'hot' drummers totally cut themselves off from the audience during solos but not Mike; it's like he's almost saying "Hey check this out" just with his facial expressions....MASTER!
Mangini is that dude at the party that's really good at drums that just makes you smile when he plays. You can't quantify that. There's just so few people that can do that.
Many pick their favorite drummers because of the way they sound, and sound is very important, but it's also very personal and hard to quantify. I've been drumming all my life, and I'm just past 50. I practice a couple hours a day on work days, 6 to 8 on days off. I'm not as good as Mangini, but I can play a lot of what he plays (certainly not everything...). This much can be safely said....the man is a great athlete. If any of the rest of you can play any Dream Theater songs, you know that most of them are like running sprints. It is so physically demanding to keep a double-kick beat for 6 minutes at 600 bpm and keep moving your hands all over the set. This much can also be said....he has a very solid sense of time. I think he is extraordinary, and I find him inspiring. He is not my favorite drummer though.... for stylistic reasons, I prefer Dave Weckl and Zakir Hussain (but I don't think either would be appropriate with Dream Theater.

exactly why he has so big of a kit.. as he is ambidextrous he can change the lead hand during a track so he doesn't get a arm tired. also he does the fills using both toms of each side so he doesn't have to move much to be inline with the kit... this way he conserves so much energy, but you have to be drum genius to pull this off.. That is what I will take from the clip, thank you.
While this is indeed a killer solo (and Mangini is one of my favorites), I have always been curious as to what criteria is used to determine what is "best," whether it's drums, tuba or accordion...
He's also a great guy that supports local musicians...I do sound in clubs all around Boston & Mike often comes out to support his friends (local bands) and usually is willing to sit in for a few songs (and usually a monster solo)...we just can't get enough of this guy!
Good god man. I play 18 instruments and play professionally in Nashville. Very well trained. That being said. This is wayyyyyyhhh above my pay grade. Holy shit man. It would take me a year to chart this . Another reason why he got the dream theater gig ...he is truly a great musician. From his timing to his dynamics. Originality And understanding of music theory. He’s too Godamn good
I find this solo to be incredible and inspiring. Mangini is up there talent wise with Portnoy, Peart, & Minneman. And to those that are upset at his having "a lot of stuff" onstage, you need to get a grip, he uses everything, and Prog-Metal /Rock uses A LOT of drums, so grow up ya candy-asses.
I really hate when people says that Mangini plays without feelings and groove. It's like Dream Theater picked Mangini just because he plays without feelings and groove... Fanboys are just buthurt because noob Portnoy left the band.
MGmannen Exactly! Portnoy voluntarily left expecting them to wait on him to "take a break"! They moved on and picked Mangini. I'm glad they did. But in all fairness, Portnoy continues to make great music.
Man, didn't he have just the most amazing sound ever! He just played with so much force, yet completely controlled. I remember when they played Lost Not Forgotten and he did that quad hit on his 18 floor, it hit like a 22 kick.
Although calling someone *the best*, is subjective, this was an amazing solo. It had all the attributes of a great solo piece. So if anyone of these keyboard naysayers, can do better, step up or step off. Thanks for the post 👍
Part of my youth was spent watching Mike play drums in his family's basement. He was great then (prodigy!) and grew to be one of the best. VERY proud to have known him 'way back when'.
In fact there are many drummers out there who are great and all of them are superb!!! THERE IS NO BEST DRUMMER!!! At least music is a art and the way of your personal expression on an instrument!!! At least it's up to your personal taste in style and expression of the particular drummer itself!!! But technical wise they are all of a very high level, so you can not compare their technique anymore in that stage!!! This is about personal taste!!!
i don't get the hostility... If you love MP, then you have a dozen recording to fawn over. I think the 2013 DT album is one of the most enjoyable DT recordings I have heard in years.... so now we have both.
When it comes to music and drummers, there can't be a best. Music is so subjective and what I love maybe something you hate. There is no best! The only way to categorize music is what is professional quality VS. amateur and even that encompasses so many variables. If you love it...then it's the best.
I didn't mean to get everyone into a angry feud. You all are talking about great musicians here. I'm sure you all can agree on that. Who's better? Who cares! Portnoy, Mangini, Weckl, Simon Phillips, Me, we're all great! (Kidding!!) But there are so any unbelievable drummers, different styles, if you can learn a little from all of them, then you develop your own groove and signature. Who wins? YOU do man! We all should be helping each other. If we met at a gig, hugs would go around I know! I love all my musician friends because we have a very special connection that no one else would ever understand. Peace friends.
***** Hey Mikey! Would love to meet Rod, and Lang is a monster too. Never met Portnoy so I will defer to you. But If I had a chance to I bet you are a killer drummer and it would be an honor. I have always felt, and I am just a stupid keyboardist, that the best bands are backed by a great drummer. I have always loved playing with some of the best and it is the most important piece of any ensemble because it fires up the backbone of any comp. I love drummers but, don't like guitarists much tho, unless they are restrained, potted down, and muzzled. ha! (I'll hear it from that comment)
Im a 60years old rocker have been watch good drummer since john bownham all i can say withthis man is Malupet!!! A monster of drums. Long live mike mangini
I have to separate between the facts and my taste, I personally *like* Portnoy drumming with DT better, however Mangini has a notoriously better technique and musicianship in general.
Anderton .Gambino YES EXACTLY! I'm glad someone said it. And his solos sound robotic as well. His drumming sounds like highly technical "demonstrations".
You two guys dont know what drumming is if you write comments like that. Just because DT got a new drummer (one of the best) doesnt mean that he has to be worse in the band. If you watched the auditions you would have seen how good Mike Mangini played. No mistakes whatsoever. Its actually Mikes fault for leaving his band. They were like family. So just think about how they still feel.
WikBoss1234 Plus Mangini stated in an interview that he's not there to replace Portnoy, but to be the new drummer for Dream Theater. He plays the old songs, but it would be stupid if he emulated MP exactly without adding his own stuff to it while staying true to the music. That just wouldn't be being a good musician.
johnny albit Aside from all the drumming debates going on, I would just like to point out that it was wholly unnecessary to use the word 'retards' in your comment.
Paweł Morrison While this may not be the "best drum solo ever", you have to respect the technique, endurance, and timing this monster has. As a former teacher at one of the most prestigious music schools in the world, I'd say he does have "skill". But to each his own. In the end, music is extremely subjective.
^ Exactly as Alex said. I too do get sick of all these 'best solo ever' videos. But you cannot reduce this solo to simply a guy with 'a lot of stuff' and 'two kick drums'. Mike Mangini is incredible, his independence and precision is unreal, and his super efficient technique has made him a very important drummer. If you believe that this isn't 'skill' you really don't know what you're talking about. And as much as I love Buddy Rich myself, you cannot possibly mention him here. Buddy and Mike are on two totally different ends of the spectrum. Mike Mangini is the one of the best in his field. I myself find this just as interesting as any Buddy Rich solo.
in that case, polyrhythm sucks :D I'm not just kiddind, I never understood the purpose of that... is it to give you a slight discomfort? why would music bring you discomfort? I think that polyrhythm is just a term out of beat drummers invented, so that they can be the "greatest ever"
***** polyrhythm is actually quite difficult and technical. I've drummed for years and can't even do a simple 3/4 on the ride over 4/4 on the bass and snare. But I'm not an expert, so he may actually just be randomly banging shit
***** No, drummers skilled enough to do polyrhythms *_definitely_* have rhythm, no doubt. People without the extreme technical knowhow would think it just sounds like crap though
Kevin Benoit ok, I get that it's hard to do already, that it's a technique and that it requires a skilled man ... but what's the point of it? to piss people off?
This is what awesome looks and sounds like. You won't find many drummers better technically than Master Mike Mangini. To the guy who posted Keith Moon would blow him away, you obviously are an old man who hasn't kept up with drumming and drummers because as good as Keith was he wasn't on this level and that's just honesty. Moon was great and deserves all the respect for his skill but he isn't this good nor would he compete on the level of Terry Bozio, Nick Menza, Dave Lombardo, John Tempeta and so on. Don't put down great skill because you are a fan boi and old.
trendyjon1 it's not about beating anyone, when will you people understand it's not a contest, it's an art.there are people here comparing dead drummers to live drummers jazz drummers to rock drummers, stop the madness; it's an art.
Keith gets lost and immediately hits a cymbal.. Love Townshend's songwriting.. I think he's one of the best writers ever, but never a fan of Moon.. Drum solos are no way of judging a player anyway.. It's about how he fits in with his bass player and the other members of the band.. Mangini is a friggin' great musician and DT couldn't have made a better choice..
Why should he copy anybody. . . he is good and prove it in many ways. You don´t like him. . . fine. . . .and someone don´t like Neal Peart. . . so what!?
***** Just what i thought . . . . it´s the same with the videos of the best guitar player . . . . . i don´t have to sea it and i bet it always is Jimi Hendrix.
Mangini IS a GROOVE BEAST, TECHNIQUE BEAST, A WONDERFUL MUSICIAN, has a GREAT TASTE FOR MUSIC, lot of CREATIVITY. In other words a REAL MUSICIAN. Unfortunately a lot of people are jealous of him being so great. Mangini forever!
This is a good solo, but for me, to be the best solo needs to have more feelings, not just robotic perfection technique. For example, Neil Peart solos are not so fast or "difficult" (technically speaking) but are much more musical and I enjoy watch them. This one after three minutes is like enough..
new generation of musicians, faster is better.NOT! Hate that. Larger drum kits, more strings, that doesn't make you better. Real musicians can make music with a bass, tom, snare and 1 symbol. Guitarist that play with emotion can play to any audience. They capture your soul. This new gen just bores me.
+scott grasser What the fuck has the newer generations got to do with this? You're just another grumpy fuck that has just encountered his midlife-crisis and that misses his precious 1970's so much he resorts to picking on younger people who are still in the middle of their glory years, and that are doing things differently. Also, you say I'm an internet tough guy, but then you call the new generation a bunch of pussies in your next sentence. Don't be a hypocrite.
+Michael Jason Thank you about this musical Information! I didn´t know about Mike Mangini. Now I have to check out for the group he´s playing with. See you!
+heike hasenmaier He is currently in Dream Theater. Their last two albums feature his drumming, "A Dramatic Turn Of Events", and "Dream Theater". Also check out Dream Theater's original drummer Mike Portnoy, he's reallt good!
Could not agree more, hell it might not have even been Mangini"s best solo on this tour! He really is a great musician though and I'm glad that Portnoy's departure led to him receiving so much exposure.
Mike is an ambidextrous mad man on drums!!!! Unbelieveable coordination !!! Defenitely a gift from the heavens!!!!! And I also understand that mangini and portnoy styles are different...so you really can't judge...although mike is technically proficiently a dab higher standard ...he explores on the kit like einstein on drums!!! Working every muscle in the body!! Hes defintely a beast !!!!!
I think he is a great drummer. He is very fast. But like others has said there is no groove or music to the solo. He is often just hitting the drums really fast. Why I like Peart's solos better is that they are more musical. He is not just trying to hit his drums as fast as possible. I think it takes more to make it more musical than just play quickly.
Stop talking pls... Each hit in that solo had thinking behind it. Metres and polyrhythms bro. They aren't easy listening, but they show SOOOOOOO much more technicality than standard "musical" rhythms. When you develop an ear for it, they sound enjoyable, adding a flair to the standard musicality that's heard everywhere. Your comment is similar to people saying incredible guitarist like Govan and Petrucci are just playing fast random notes. No.
Byron Thompson You need reading comprehension skills. I did not say that there was no thinking behind the hits in his solo. I never said they were random. I said that there is no groove to it. It is boring after awhile. I love Prog. music but sometimes it does get boring when it is only to show speed and/or skill. To each his own. I think you need to rethink why you are so upset at those with differing opinions. LOL!
Yeah, Mike is a great technician... but boring. It's like listening to Michael Bolton but it tires the ear very quickly. Mike Portnoy had it all over him in the showmanship and dynamic area.
Me too Mats. While I admire Mr. Mangini's skill and facility, I don't feel that he brings much to Dream Theater's music. While Mike Mangini's solos are breathtaking, his playing leaves me wanting more. For myself, it seems devoid of the musicality and creativity that Mike Portnoy brought to the band. He may not have been able to play a one-handed roll, but who cares. His playing and creativity brought a great deal to the band and served as the foundation of the Dream Theater that once existed.
@David Topchiev I asked. Boring is a subjective concept while been technically developed, is not. Mangini had and always will be compared to Portnoy and it is something to live with. Simple as that. That being said, I must confess. I prefer Mike. Mike is good but Mike is better.
@David Topchiev It is hard to answer because I am always looking for something new or I missed along the years but, I will not dodge this bullet and give a few names: Dream Theater, Queensryche (I know, I know....), King Diamond, Judas, Ed Guy, Ozzy, Sabbath and a special place in my heart to Dr Sin.
@David Topchiev I agree. Solos always has been a time break to the vocalist and the rest of the band. Sometimes you have break enough to finish with 100% games like Skyrim. It is a massive jerk off and should be placed with other songs. Maybe a cover.
Look the guy is talented but portnoy sound more organic this guy sounds like a robot the hits are too precise dream theater sounds way different with this guy
"The hits are too precise." Um. That's not a valid critique. Maybe the critique you're looking for is it sounds "soulless". Even though I don't personally believe that, it makes way more sense than "he's playing too precisely."
He is truly AMAZING!! Lot of people are gonna hate him . Instead you should appreciate him.He won the audition for DREAM THEATER !! END OF CONVERSATION !! I totally admire him!! MUCH RESPECT!! TRULY ONE OF THE WORLDS GREATEST!!
LanceCampeau I have been a huge fan of Mangini's playing for years, well before his days with Dream Theater. Although this solo (and all the others I've watched... including seeing him live) is impressive from a drummers standpoint, I have to agree that it is rather boring. I was expecting a more entertaining & flashier performance from him.... he can do it without any problem, I've seen it in vids from other artists he's performed with..... still a great solo, was just expecting a bit more "showmanship"! God knows I wish I could play like him....
Extremely technically skilled and very fast, certainly one of the best drummers in that field, but despite all that, it's not my style. A lot of lightning notes in succession, maybe a rudiment-based groove here or there, with plenty of hard hitting and not nearly as much dynamics or feel-really, 4:30 onwards is REALLY ANNOYING. Honestly, I'd much rather listen to Bruford on twelve drums.
+Christian Winslett Eh. I enjoy drum solos sounding good. I like Gary Husband's solos on Allan Holdsworth's IOU and Metal Fatigue. Also Chad Wackerman, Dave Weckl, and Bill Bruford, especially during his jazz years (though his Indiscipline solo in Japan '95 and drum break in Heart of the Sunrise are great examples of drumming minimally but still with playful energy and tension)
Christian Winslett When I say "sound good", I guess I mean not just hitting drums fast and loud like after 4:30 but creating something that could really stand up as a musical piece, something that could be a track on an album on its own. Also, I wouldn't judge a person's emotion based on how much they're smiling. Some drummer can just look kind of stoic... but they can damn well play. And I can't really take that much emotion out of drum solos, or most instrumental solos for that matter-I think when people say a drum solo is "emotional", they're referring to flow of energy-tension and release, which I do like.
I remember that as a drummer this was one of the first ever drum solo I saw. It was so inspiring that time and it was definitely a dream to watch them live. Now, after 6-7 years, today I'm watching this drum solo and I've seen Dream Theater live twice already and I've grown so much as a drummer myself and to this day it still remains as inspiring as it was when I started drumming. I know all the hate comments are there that Mangini is not the best replacement for Porntoy and blah blah blah, I know, coz Porntoy was the Soul of DT. But, we can't deny this beauty that Mangini lays down upon all of us. 🙌🏼
I have eyes and ears too, don't worry, and I simply repeat what I said in the post: extreme technique with no feelings and emotions, drumming like this simply makes no sense to me.
I love how freaking happy Mangini looks throughout the whole thing, like he was born to do this. And his skills are out of this world.

Mike Mangini. A guy with fantastic technique that everyone loves to rip on.
they rip on it because they aren't able to do it themselves.
Only idiots rip on him. Nobody could of replaced Portnoy to those that worship him as a god, but as gifted as Portnoy is Mangini is a far more gifted.
Mangini is one of the best drummers in the world; and now plays for one of the best bands in the world, Dream Theater.
He's amazing, but no where as good as Portnoy as to Dream Theater.

That is what I will take from the clip, thank you.
Absolutely agree with that
Amen Peter. Well stated....
He is impossible.
While this is indeed a killer solo (and Mangini is one of my favorites), I have always been curious as to what criteria is used to determine what is "best," whether it's drums, tuba or accordion...
personal opinion.
Its a word you put in a title and it produces 400 k views, other than that ,nothing....
He's also a great guy that supports local musicians...I do sound in clubs all around Boston & Mike often comes out to support his friends (local bands) and usually is willing to sit in for a few songs (and usually a monster solo)...we just can't get enough of this guy!
WHOA!! That was phenomenal! My alter ego would be in awe!!
And to those that are upset at his having "a lot of stuff" onstage, you need to get a grip, he uses everything, and Prog-Metal /Rock uses A LOT of drums, so grow up ya candy-asses.
the best drum solo ever I have seen loved it so much and thanks again for this video
WOW!
That was amazing.
I believe this was the best solo I have heard so far! Thank you.
Maybe the most smiling drummer ever
How could you not like mike Mangini. The guy is having a blast. Love his energy.
Although calling someone *the best*, is subjective, this was an amazing solo. It had all the attributes of a great solo piece.
So if anyone of these keyboard naysayers, can do better, step up or step off.
Thanks for the post 👍
..I made The best chicken sandwich EVER this afternoon..
I seen this 6 years later and you still got me 😂
Bet you're still eating it! lol
Part of my youth was spent watching Mike play drums in his family's basement. He was great then (prodigy!) and grew to be one of the best. VERY proud to have known him 'way back when'.
Mangini's drumming is like a well written book that I could just read time and time again.
Buddy rich is the best drummer ever
i don't get the hostility... If you love MP, then you have a dozen recording to fawn over. I think the 2013 DT album is one of the most enjoyable DT recordings I have heard in years.... so now we have both.
Glad to find a fan of the self titled album! It's personally one of my favorites
And then there is this. Why we call it a drum Solo. Fun to watch and listen.
great dynamics & very creative soloing...drums sound dead-on...great engineering...
A triumph of technique over musicality.
Mr.Miyagi you just stick to ur karaticality and leave the drumming to us ok..I got this relax I GOT THIS!!
When it comes to music and drummers, there can't be a best. Music is so subjective and what I love maybe something you hate. There is no best! The only way to categorize music is what is professional quality VS. amateur and even that encompasses so many variables. If you love it...then it's the best.
***** Very nicely put! Im a guitarist and I can even see the difference!
***** that's what studio musicians are for
***** please, stop your rant!! we know your opinion allready. Not so hard after see you at ALL MM/MP video's. GET A LIFE!!
Impressive. Love this guy, and he can even smile while he makes all this.
That guy is just amazing!!!
110 people don't even know what drums is, or listen to Blink 182 and their Travis Barker.
Downloaders need to stop using 'ever'.
+Darin b Uploaders
I don't know why people bash anyone. He is an awesome drummer. Appreciate it or move on....
Absolutely awesome
.."the best"..."ever" easy,man,easy...cool down
4:05 ''uuuaahaaaaaaa''
Glad to see he finally brought back the old tricks from his good old Stevie Vai solo, which is my favourite piece of drumming ever!
Mangini sounds robotic.. When he plays the old dt stuff, it sounds empty and dry compared to portnoys drumming..
Well, you know what they say, folks.
"Opinions are like assholes: They're all over UA-cam...."
Awesome groves Mike!! So glad to see it and hear it! : )
MM on a whole different level! I can't wait for the DVD and the new album and see what Mangini brings to the table!!!
I guess having a lot of stuff and a double bass drum pedal or two kick drums is how you make a drum solo "best ever" these days
I there any other way of making a drum solo interesting? ;)
Yes, skill. Ever heard of buddy rich?
I was of course being sarcastic. You didn´t catch the wink at the end did you? Either way, to each his own.
"His timing sucks"
No, it's called polyrhythm, and that is why you'll never be a good drummer
in that case, polyrhythm sucks :D
I'm not just kiddind, I never understood the purpose of that... is it to give you a slight discomfort? why would music bring you discomfort?
I think that polyrhythm is just a term out of beat drummers invented, so that they can be the "greatest ever"
***** polyrhythm is actually quite difficult and technical. I've drummed for years and can't even do a simple 3/4 on the ride over 4/4 on the bass and snare. But I'm not an expert, so he may actually just be randomly banging shit
Kevin Benoit
it's difficult because your mind is trained to drum in rhythm... not difficult for people without sense of rhythm :)
***** No, drummers skilled enough to do polyrhythms *_definitely_* have rhythm, no doubt. People without the extreme technical knowhow would think it just sounds like crap though
Kevin Benoit
ok, I get that it's hard to do already, that it's a technique and that it requires a skilled man ... but what's the point of it? to piss people off?
Awesome - Thanks for the post.
AMAZING
Sounds like someone building a shed. Etc.
rofl
This is from the album "Construction Sounds" ;-)
This is what awesome looks and sounds like. You won't find many drummers better technically than Master Mike Mangini. To the guy who posted Keith Moon would blow him away, you obviously are an old man who hasn't kept up with drumming and drummers because as good as Keith was he wasn't on this level and that's just honesty. Moon was great and deserves all the respect for his skill but he isn't this good nor would he compete on the level of Terry Bozio, Nick Menza, Dave Lombardo, John Tempeta and so on.
Don't put down great skill because you are a fan boi and old.
Dont forget about our master Dave Weckl
No one beats him and I mean no one.
trendyjon1 it's not about beating anyone, when will you people understand it's not a contest, it's an art.there are people here comparing dead drummers to live drummers jazz drummers to rock drummers, stop the madness; it's an art.
Keith gets lost and immediately hits a cymbal.. Love Townshend's songwriting.. I think he's one of the best writers ever, but never a fan of Moon.. Drum solos are no way of judging a player anyway.. It's about how he fits in with his bass player and the other members of the band.. Mangini is a friggin' great musician and DT couldn't have made a better choice..
terry bozio blows. But I agree with mostly everything else you have said.
incredible. wow. awesome solo
Mikes a GREAT DRUMMER! NO QUESTION. BEST SOLO?? HARDLY!! My buddies son went to Berkeley & mike was his teacher. VERY FAST!!
Really? The best ever? Not-he's trying to copy Neal Peart with all the extras but Peart blows him away!
Sorry, but You really need a hearing aid! Im sure Eric Clapton is the greatest guitarist too! ;)
fourthlayer I never said,that i sea Jimi on the top . . . maybe you need a eye aid!? ;) ^^
Peart has a relatively limited repertoire; and Mangini seems to have an OH MY FUCKING GOD quality:)
Neil Peart doesn't play with his hair during his solos....just sayin'.
Unfortunately, Neil Peart no longer plays solos.
Amazing, great artist
Mangini IS a GROOVE BEAST, TECHNIQUE BEAST, A WONDERFUL MUSICIAN, has a GREAT TASTE FOR MUSIC, lot of CREATIVITY. In other words a REAL MUSICIAN. Unfortunately a lot of people are jealous of him being so great. Mangini forever!
Far from the best ever......good, sure.
Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa played better with 3 drums
+Joey Roni What do you mean by better?
+Joey Roni lol Ya rite
True!
Wow.. what joint you smoke?
I am a descendant of Gene Krupa! He would truly be PROUD OF MIKE MANGINI 👍It was Gene Krupa who brought the drummer to the center !
I was at the show and he was amazing!
In my opinion, Mike Mangini is the best drums of the world......
+scott grasser The new generation seems to be all about themselves. "selfies" everywhere, me,me,me,I,I,I...sad.
You can't play prog metal on a 3-piece, you ignorant fuck. Also, he is ambidextrious, and this setup allows for open handed playing.
+scott grasser "Another Internet tough guy." *acts like an internet tough guy* a little hypocritical are we?
Mike was really good on THAT METAL SHOW.
I loved the "Speed Bag" he added to the kit.
Mangini is an absolute monster. His talent is absolutely untouched by anyone else.
Have a look at John Bonham from Led Zeppelin at "Moby Dick"
+heike hasenmaier John Bonham is amazing..but..this guy is an alien.
+James Yates Thank you for the Information, but have a look at the UA-cam-Video "This Drummer is at the wrong gig" ;-)) Greetings
+Michael Jason Gaines Bonham does have much more soul!
Title of this clip should be cut down to.."Drum Solo" but non of that "greatest" or "best in the world" C'mon people...
Could not agree more, hell it might not have even been Mangini"s best solo on this tour! He really is a great musician though and I'm glad that Portnoy's departure led to him receiving so much exposure.
super BRILLIANT talent!!
No.
Byron Thompson
You need reading comprehension skills. LOL!
Byron Thompson so you call me names and then hide. Typical troll byron
No groove? It's mostly sub divisional counting. Very Neil Peart-esque too :)
Yeah, Mike is a great technician... but boring. It's like listening to Michael Bolton but it tires the ear very quickly. Mike Portnoy had it all over him in the showmanship and dynamic area.
Technically and musically brilliant of course.. but boring.
Missing the entertainer Mike Portnoy in DT.
@David Topchiev ok, you won. Let me call Lars
Insane skills!!!!
So fucking awesome!
NOT saying he isn't good. He is very good. But the "Best Drum Solo Ever" ... not so much.
Look the guy is talented but portnoy sound more organic this guy sounds like a robot the hits are too precise dream theater sounds way different with this guy
"The hits are too precise."
Um. That's not a valid critique.
Maybe the critique you're looking for is it sounds "soulless". Even though I don't personally believe that, it makes way more sense than "he's playing too precisely."
A Musical Travesty good call
He is truly AMAZING!! Lot of people are gonna hate him . Instead you should appreciate him.He won the audition for DREAM THEATER !! END OF CONVERSATION !! I totally admire him!! MUCH RESPECT!! TRULY ONE OF THE WORLDS GREATEST!!
Fantastic performance!!
Great speed/power but this solo is boring to listen to.
You're boring to listen to.
I'm boring to listen to
nope, not boring for me unless if you really know what drumming is all about...
That shit boring af
+newvultraz 4:30 on is more a demonstration of his skill, less musical, more technical.
+Christian Winslett
Eh.
+newvultraz This solo kicks ass mike is a beast...Quit hatin! go elsewhere hater!
newvultraz hahaha haterr
Amazing! 👍🏻💯
Just speed and nothin' else. Simply boring, Portnoy is another world.
sorry man, but you have no idea what difficulty means. mangini plays stuf that portnoy can just dream about.
I have eyes and ears too, don't worry, and I simply repeat what I said in the post: extreme technique with no feelings and emotions, drumming like this simply makes no sense to me.
Ok, but it's definitely not "just speed".
His solos don't make any sense..
+Laura Miny Being technically a good drummer doesn't make a good solo drummer.
+Laura Miny What rythym is going on here exactly??
+Henkjan Steringa It's all a matter of opinion
so true +Henkjan
You are wrong. Listen to some latin jazz for a couple years, then come back.
love the drum kit!
