      Rax Savvage that will be the 8th ship named enterprise, with the lineage starting during the revolutionary war, and the 7th Enterprise being the first Nuclear Powered aircraft carrier, fighting in Vietnam and assisting during the Cuban Missile crisis. Gene Roddenberry knew how important the enterprise lineage was and that's how he got the name.

    Sometimes, when I rewatch old clips, Stargate seems like a relatively forgettable but fun show that I just happened to be fond of. But then I think of stuff like this. How tech like the Prometheus advanced humanity in the eyes of the galactic community, and how so many different episodes would contribute to our appreciation of the ship. That episode broke my heart. It felt like a part of human history had been lost.
    I think the franchise's greatest achievement was making traditionally far-fetched sci-fi concepts feel grounded and real.

    Thanks for doing the Prometheus. Although the Daedalus and others have replaced it, I always had a soft spot for the Prometheus because in Stargate it was Earth's first attempt at making a large spaceship based on reverse engineered alien technology. I enjoyed the episode where it first took off and was saddened to see it blown up in a later episode.

      I absolutely loved the slow crawl and hum of the engines. The only other ship, that gave me the chills was the one from Stargate Universe, the blue alien one, specifically the scene where they run away after powering their "star drive". SG had some top talent ship designers and top writer talent. It's a shame and a pity the studio couldn't manage the financial aspect better. Old geizers with no imagination (McKay's actor touches a lot on it whenever the subject rises in his podcasts. How MGM couldn't even be able to make the most basic merch for people to buy, like a basic coffee cup... shame.).

  • @erwin669

    I wonder how "civil" the conversation between Navy and Air Force heads over which service gets to be the owner of this ship went. I've read about how Curtis LeMat had a fit when he found out that the CIA had an airplane, so I'm guessing this might have gone something similar.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 3 роки тому +5

      Prolly neither since the SG program was in a completely different frame of reference than the other programs. I mean, even the SG Command, it was in a base, but it was completely separated as a power structure from the rest. There's a trivia bit (which, i'm sorry, i don't remember where i got it from, but i remember it being a sourced one, so maybe a commentary track) that said that Hammond was over the mountain's power structure, what he said, went. YET, if he fell, nobody else had command structure from above, and would require someone else, from the outside to take his place.
      In a normal situation, if a commander falls, or is unable to lead, the most immediate next power element is ready to take their place.
      In that episode with the black hole, it's pretty evident, as they have outsiders flown in, rather than mountain command taking over OR, even sending people down.
      This show is very well thought out and there's a lot of background stuff that was required to make it so.

    The most fantastical thing about SG-1 was the fact that the Air Force would voluntarily build and staff something that big and relatively ponderous. They're so desperate to stop using the A-10 and phase out other ground attack aircraft for the "fast and pointy" air superiority fighters, I sincerely doubt they'd accept something that couldn't pop up to mach 2 immediately after doing an Immelmann. ;p

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 7 років тому +16

      I, and some of my friends, always thought that it would have made much more sense for the Navy to build and operate all SG Command's starships. They're already accustomed to working with large crews and tactics wise it's not that much different from a submarine, just without the benefit of depth and things like thermoclines to hide in, but the basics of operating in a hostile 3 dimensional environment still apply.

    • @applepie231

    • @Thatslifebro_
      @Thatslifebro_ 7 років тому

      Yes but as far as i remember the Air Force operated these Ships because of the secrecy. Having one branch of the military in charge already lead to multiple leaks to the press (even though they could be covered up) having a second one would MASSIVELY increase the amount of staff and therefore the risk.

    • @tiki28714
      @tiki28714 7 років тому +3

      Not to mention that Space currently, in the real world, falls under the Air Forces' domain. It is literally part of their mission statement.

    • @Generalkidd
      @Generalkidd 7 років тому +3

      Yeah in a lot of scifi works like Halo and The Expanse, it tends to be the Navy that operates space warships. However, it's also true that today the Air Force is in charge of space operations. It's hard to say what will really happen in the future, but eventually one of those branches of military will become obsolete and absorbed into the other one. Now to answer the OP's statement, I think the Air Force today would be more than happy to use a large space frigate for air superiority and ground attack. The Prometheus itself is vastly superior to A10's and any other aircraft in existence today. Literally just hovering over enemy territory would be enough to win, but if engagement is a must, then I'm sure the numerous missiles and railguns on the Prometheus would be more than enough to totally replace and be more effective than a bunch of A10's. Not to mention the shields on the Promethus would make it impervious to all ground and air fire. Not to mention I'm pretty sure the Prometheus sublight engines are farrrr faster than an A10 at max burn.

    The Prometheus's rail guns were designed by the asgard as well. This is stated in the episode thor showed up at stargate command when senator Kinsey, and other world leaders were there. Thor said that in thanks for sg1s help, the asgard were beaming aboard to fit new asgard designed weapons and systems. Normal rail guns that would be designed by us could do any real damage to the shields of a hatak vessel. They would most lickley be using a specially designed round among other things.

      I don't think that an al'kesh engine system would ever need one, just mostly a power-controller to stop engine overloads damaging/blowing-up the ship.

      The repurposed Alkesh one (that they used to get the ship home, though had to keep dropping out of subspace because it wasn’t designed for such a big ship)
      And finally the Asgard one (i.e the one that actually was good)

    I never understood why they didn't build as many sub-light ships as possible. I mean, I get why from a writing standpoint, but presumably they could build sub-light drives much easier and faster than FTL drives, and it'd be better than waiting for the Asgard to gift a new hyperdrive.
    Sub-light ships would be very beneficial, even with no FTL. Think about it. Defending Earth doesn't require FTL. Hell, it arguably doesn't require any propulsions systems at all. But the drive can lift large payloads into Earth orbit and can go at high fractions of the speed of light. This would allow massive battlestations to be placed into orbit around Earth, and allow large fleets of sub-light warships defending Earth. With massive battlestations and a big fleet, defense would be well handled. Plus, if they got NASA in on it, they could mount manned mission to any place in the solar system. FTL drives would be needed for anything beyond the solar system, but not defending the solar system.

    I loved the shape of this ship although I'd love it to have been bigger. It was kinda Asgard looking and I wish after they created the deadalus class we used the smaller Prometheus class and bult a fleet and have them accompany more powerful ships and use them as battleships or defence for planets. With Asgard tech including the beam weapon they could have been pretty powerful

    I still wonder why it was an air force vessel when it operated like a naval vessel. I mean, I KNOW it's because the AF was tasked with the SG project and plot-wise I guess they couldn't have AF & navy mixed (since the USAF was heavily involved with the show), but really if you have a naval style vessel, it should be run by the navy since the naval command structure suits the running of a spaceSHIP better... The closest and largest the AF ever comes to a large vessel (in the air) would be a bomber or a cargolifter. It was interesting nonetheless...

    • @filipbatora7523

      X-something is used for test aircraft. For example, F-22 used to be X-22 when it was being constructed. And only after it is tested, put into use and production, it gets renamed to F-something (in this case BC-something, because it was battlecruiser). If you remember, F-302 was also called X-302 in the first few episodes where it appeared.

    Some mention should be made of the Prometheus' original experimental hyperdrive system, powered by naquadria. The potential energy yield of even small quantities of naquadria seemed to make it feasible to build a goauld-style hyperdrive into a much smaller space. However, the warnings of Langaaran scientist Jonas Quinn, that "The instability of the naquadria increases exponentially the longer you continue to extract energy from it," continued to fall upon deaf ears among terrestrial shipwrights, leading to the unfortunate self-detonation of the Prometheus' naquadria power core in the middle of the ship's proving flight, stranding it halfway across the galaxy until engineers from Earth could travel to its location by Stargate to install a salvaged alkesh hyperdrive as a replacement.
    The sliding instability of naquadria thus demonstrated that any system with a sustained power output was inherently incapable of being naquadria-powered, such as shields, engines, sensors, or projected energy weapons of the conventional sort. Naquadria fell into near-total disuse by Earth, save for its original Langaaran application as a weapon of mass destruction.
    Ironically, it was the half-ascended Goauld system lord, Anubis, who figured out the first practical application of naquadria in a device not designed to explode. The tri-barreled wrist-mounted pulse blasters of his infamous Kull Warriors, which functioned in the manner of a staff blaster but in rapid storms of tiny fireballs rather than one big one, in which each barrel was essentially a microminiaturized staff powered by a sand-grain of naquadria. Each barrel would charge up, release a blast, then cool down and rest while each of the other two barrels fired in its turn, providing an enormous amount of offensive firepower without ever drawing upon any single naquadria grain long enough for its instability to become unmanageable.
    Had a naquadria hyperdrive been made following this philosophy, it would have made it possible for a small capital ship to navigate the heavens in a continuous series of 1-second long, 3 million-mile hops, tracing a dotted line across the galaxy. It would likely have been dubbed "The hopperdrive," just to nail down the point.

    The scale while canon from what was written about it. There are good videos explaining how the ship would have had to have a much larger scale and actually would be over 500m long in order for it to actually accommodate the fighter compliment and human complement. The canon scale seems to be just someone making up numbers without consideration for the scale needed.

    They should have made more of the Prometheus class and use them as either a battleship style class or aircraft carrier and kept the Daedalus class as a more faster and more maneuverable Destroyer class in all honesty the Prometheus class look like it had more teeth to it versus the Daedalus I'd like to imagine the Prometheus with the most up-to-date Asgard weapons and ancient weapons and Shields and Power Systems now that would be a ship to be reckoned with

    I still don't understand why they continue to use current ship building ideas on futuristic space cruisers. Why would you ever need a bridge sticking up like that? We do that on aircraft carriers and naval vessels because of line-of-sight needs over the battlefield. In space you can't see anything much beyond your ship, so any bridge should be built at the heart of the vessel with maximum armor and shielding around it to avoid taking damage. You can obtain visuals from a camera or other display system and would never need a window platform like all of these ships have.
