Should have mentioned that the ships were viewed as so unbeatable that when the Atlantis expedition stated they had destroyed several, they were nearly ejected from a diplomatic meeting for lying.
Well , one time shepherd was in a puddle jumper and launched 6-7 drones at a hive ship destroying basically, so if a jumper with a small tactical nuke hitched under it in invisible mode , just fly into a hive ship , blow it up with Nuke and launch 6 or so drones at the 3 cruise ships that accompany a hive , it can singlehandedly destroy a wraith fleet lol
Oh yeah and one should probably mention that they lose all their weaknesses if they get access to a powerful power source such as a ZPM, being able to tank both drones and Asgard beams with ease, detecting cloaked ships, traveling intergalactic distances, taking on Atlantis...
Eventually. The ship has to use the power of the ZPM to grow additional armor, hull, facilities, engines, etc, etc. Wraith hives had to spend a long time growing after getting a ZPM attached before they were any better than normal hives, as opposed to other races ships which could instantly use the ZPMs to power better shields, weapons and engines. The ships are kind of alive and it could be compared to how most of our ancestors were smaller and weaker than us largely because they didn't have access to the plentiful food sources we do.

The Hives were actually some of the coolest ships I've ever seen in SciFi. Kinda like Moya from Farscape, or The Gathering Storm / Heart of the Tempest from The Expanse. The idea of living ships is very cool, and I'd have loved to see more of the growth process in the series. From the episode where Keller almost turns into one, I surmise that hive ships are created from a person, and develop a consciousness derived from that of the person they start out as. Very cool.

Lanteans, we are super smart and advanced but we caused: Anubis, Wraith, Replicators (Pegasus), Ori as well as groáuld (remember they stole almost all ther tech from them). And best of all, we dont even try to clean up the mess we´ve made after becoming gods.
Anubis wasn't on the Lantians, that was the Alterans. I know the show likes to lump them together becuase of lazy writers but their (corporeal) civilizations were 10M years removed from each other. They're as different from each other as the Ori though they share the scientific and (only once ascended) non-interference policies.
Well according to the show a big amount of Alterans were Lantians. But i got a little carried away there. Still they are the reason why the Groáuld got so powerful, they could have just made all their tech dissapear right after ascending afterall.
'A big amount' was 5k people on a prototype city ship (Atlantis) fleeing the last planet in the Alteran Empire (Terra/Earth/Tuari) not to be totally wiped out by the Ori Plague and even then they ended up barely getting out on time, having to abandon many of their fellow refugees becuase the Ori Plague hit before they managed to take off. It took millions of years to seed the Pegasus Galaxy with life before they were able to rebuild their empire. Like the Ori (and modern humans thanks to genetic engineering) they were all a single species but that's where the similarity ends.
When the Wraith first premiered on SGA I didn't like the idea of space vampires and Marilyn Manson rejects but I love how the writers approached them. They aren't super advanced like the Ori but they are clever, cunning, ruthless and have the numbers.
exactly, I agree and still feel making all the major SG villains some sort of parasite is a bit dirty but c'rest la vie. I did like the personalities that major Wraith like 'Todd' and 'Michael' but even one offs showed various interesting personalities both displaying cunning and warrior like honor in combination.
It was a good way to make them distinct from the Go'auld, while still retaining some of their weaknesses (lack of high-level coordination, serious infighting, stagnation/complacency due to millennia of utter dominance, warfare doctrine that prioritizes something other than kill efficiency).
I loved the wraith and the space vampire thing with green skin and black leather clothes etc, if I in of the wraith I would take all the hives and cruisers to a planet that produces lighting naturally alot of it and just park it in it and let the ships grow I'll have a entire fleet of super hive and super cruiser ships each being a capital ship in it's own right and it takes 8 months to grow a hive ship a few months to go super and do that for a year making many for ships I'll have the Strongest fleet , and I found out wraith can feed on animals but prefer humans because they love the thrill of it , so just got to find planets rich with animal life and I can feed my wraiths and I'll declare war on everyone building a empire fighting the humans, gau'ld, Jaffa, Lucian allience, go to Ori galaxy and go to the Galaxy where the ship destiny was and fight the nakia and drone ships kicking ass lol
Interestingly, the Official Magazine once stated that the Hive Ship hangars could only carry 50 fighters, which started a huge debate on the Stargate Wiki...Ah the joys of scifi numbers.

It's mostly prolonged radiation, a short burst localized burst would just cause damage the same way other energy weapons do and the ship would simply replace the damaged parts in a verry short time span. The problem is that in hyperspace you have a continuous low yield all around bombardment leading to the accumulation of cellular damage spread across the entire hull of the ship.
I really would have liked to have the "construction" of these ships explored in greater detail. I know, we had that one epsiode, but man, I'd like to see more.
I guess the superior speed of SW-Universe ships and the shields on their Vessels would make a fight pretty one sided. And I would guess even the numbers are close between them.
Star Destroyers would cut through Wraith hives like hot knives through butter. They're giant, they're slow, they have easily exploitable FTL systems, and they have no real defense against energy based attacks if the ease with which Asgard weapons rip them apart is any indication.
DrakeMarvell Considering the averge Wraith ship 4 times the average SD and their cannons are known to even overload ancient shields, plus their high numbers I would say Wraith 8 out of 10.

Well the Daedalus ambushed them and after they took countermeasure, the Tau'ri ship was basically only trying to dodge fire ans escape. It did not loss his shield , but Hiveships got it out of combat only if few seconds.
During their war with ancients the drone weapons were so advanced that developing shields was pointless. Unable to match ancient tech the wraith relies on attrition and simply out produced the Lanteans.
Out of left field request list. JMC Red Dwarf (you've already done Starbug) Blakes 7 Liberator (and Scorpio and Federation pursuit ships in other episodes) Space 1999 Eagles with Variants. The Orville (come on, that'll be fun).
I always thought it was strange how The Wraith had the capability to grow complex computer systems weapon systems navigation systems regenerative armor and all that but lacked the technological capability to grow Shield emitters. Biotechnology it's exactly that technology and as such should be upgradable. I thought that was interesting about The Wraith as well as the Pegasus replicators. They're technology hasn't really changed much over the course of millennia.
One explanation may be that the energy used to form shields is damaging to an organic hull, so raising a shield on a hive will continually degrade the hull so long as they are forced to use it. This means you can severely damage a Wraith vessel by bombarding it long enough for their own shield to do all the harm. Given that prospect, it's more profitable to dedicate your energy to hull regeneration abilities rather than shields.
The ancients had weapons that could bypass shields so the wraith never bothered with them, their hulls could take individual drone fire and start to regenerate almost instantly. They just couldn't handle a barrage of drones (nothing can).

Nice Video. Oddly enough I haven't seen a break down for an Ori Mothership yet. Did not know about the radiation weakness of the armor. Would make sense for why they never left Pegasus galaxy if true, but its one of those contradictory points of the plot
hive ships has no shields? then it'll be easy to destroy them by beaming nukes right next to it or beaming it in the center area where there's a gap or space. daedalus tried it by beaming nukes inside those ships and it worked twice but it got stopped by the countermeasures of the hive ship. so I think a nuke in the center gap or maybe two nukes exploding next to it would destroy or badly damage the hive ship.
A nuke directly hitting caused massive damage to a hive ship, essentially leaving it disabled for the better part of several days before it was able to fly back to Atlantis. The problem is trying to get nuclear missiles through, as they can be intercepted by the hive ship's Darts, either through shooting them down, or by sacrificing themselves to take the hit meant for the hive ship. That's part of the reason why Lantean drone weapons are so effective despite being missiles. They're virtually impossible for the Darts to intercept in any meaningful number. However, towards the later seasons, we did see that human ships equipped with Asgard beam weapons are capable of heavily damaging or destroying Wraith hive ships with sustained strikes. The main problem though is that at most, there's maybe two or three human ships in the Pegasus galaxy at any one time, whereas there's a whole lot more hive ships and escorting cruisers.

The super hive outclassed any ship the ori ever fielded and wrecked a fleet of dedaulus class ships capable of taking out the ori in ship to ship combat. So baring the use of there god powers I feel the wraith would win when put against the oris followers.
Well I tend to forget how powerful Wraith is, when Asuran(replicator) become a real thread in SG:atlantis though, I need to re-watch series again I guess.
@@franzweiriviere2735 I mean sure a Wraith hiveship, can't stand up to an Ori mothership but the Wraith still win in all non capital ship engagements while the Goauld are on paar with the Ori only in infantry at best. In terms of capital ship combat a superhive would of course be a very strong opponent, I think Ori beam weapons might be able to penetrate a little deeper than the Dedalus could seeing as they are stronger than Asgard beam weapons per shot but not enough to give them an edge, the main problem however remains in that superhive are incredibly rare seeing as Wraith can't produce the required ZPMs themselves.

The reason Hives use bioarmour is to defend against Drones, by increasing the number of needed munitions to take down ships thus draining Lantean magazines
In the show, every time they use drones against hives, they need a lot of them quickly draining their supplies and leaving them undefended against the remaining ships. That is their strength. They can be destroyed but in turn you expend your ammo and hives are rarely alone if they are serious.
Drones seemed to pass right through Anubis's shields, whereas it takes dozens of drones to take out a hive ship due to its massive size. You might be on to something.
Hey Spacedocks, thanks for all the videos so far I enjoy everyone of them, and thanks to you for the video on the Donnager, I watched all episodes of the series in less the 2 weeks, I really enjoyed that as well Now a little question, are you also considering ships form cartonns and animes or are you trying to obtain more information for your grounddocks series?
You know there is plenty of proof the main-capital ship in SG are not vanilla canon . I mean if we take their defense feat , we are reaching easy in gigatons level of durability . We know Atantis ship with full power energy shield powered by 3 ZPM managed to cover 70 % of the planet to protect it from the CME . Hell , Zelenka even said they have observed and analyze extinction event in the area . Of course , the CME who strike Daedalus was weird .
It's not all that strange, the organism seem a bit similar to a fungus and it was probably the smartest thing to do against an enemy that could show up and blast any shipyard to pieces in two seconds flat, this way the Wraith only had to seed a number of hosts and run away and do the same thing on twelve other planets, the Ancients had to search every single planet to find them, spreading them thin and forcing them to give up local superiority unless they want the Wraith to grow entire fleets unopposed.

Can you make a video on what the “perfect” starship would be like? I mean one with as little weaknesses (exposed bridges, engines sticking out away from main body etc.) would it be a sphere or what? In space there’s no need for aerodynamics
There might be no need for aerodynamics, but having a smaller prow mean less surface for space debris to erode the hull and weaken the shield when going thousands of km/h, its much more economical than having half the ship pelted all the time.
All they got to do is find a planet that produces tons of lightning in the atmosphere and just let the ships absorb that energy for a while and there whole fleet would be all super hive and super cruiser ships all capital ships in there own right and they can grow a hive ship in 8 months and in a few months turn into a super hive and within a year they can have hundreds of ships to command and wage war against everyone , I would have fun commanding all of that lol 😎

Ive always called BS on the ability to predict where the wraith will have their hyperspace pauses. I mean even a fraction of a second in hyperspace is a very large distance in normal space.
Why haven't u covered starwars book outbound flight? Com. Thrann of the chiss fleet against a CIS fleet, aliens from uncharted space and a Jedi warship. Seems up your alley.
50 light year maximum jump, with a 15 hour recovery... Not too limiting nor predictable if they just had the brains to not always use the minimum number of jumps and maximum range. Enemy Observer: "Look, they are going from A to F, so they are going to drop out at B, C, D and E at these times, let's plan an ambush." Wraith: "fastest route is A, B, C, D, E F... Why don't we do 35-45 light year jumps, sure it will make it A to J instead, but on any given jump we are dropping out of hyperspace in a 10 light year radius around that point. Someone has to spot where we drop out, and move their engagement to ambush us before we jump again. That's a lot of space to monitor and guess where we will emerge next..." 10 light year radius, figure out where they dropped out, and move your fleet to intercept all in under 15 hours? The only viable ambush points are at the destination, and if you figure a mere 5 light second radius as to where they will come out of hyperspace at the destination, you better have one hell of a fleet to ambush one Wraith hive ship (with 0-3 cruisers attached and a massive load of darts)
Pegasus doesn’t have a ton of races capable of interstellar travel. They probably aren’t used to competition, seeing as their last opponent were the Lantians, and they are even older than the G’ould
@@nihilityjoey Wraith ships don't have shields. There is not much in the way of armour that could survive being hit by a super MAC, other than having several kilometers of it! The best way would be to stay out of range of the infinity.
@@chris746568462 I know that the mac rounds are a powerful weapon but I don't think even if it hit the hive it wouldn't destroy it. Wraith hive could take drone fire, take asgard beam weapons without shields, and their hull start to repair instantly. The mantles approach took the macs and it didn't have its shields up. The wraith are just as advanced as the forerunners.

If the wraith were as advanced as the forunners what level were the ancients on? Its well known they were more advanced than the wraith, they were outnumbered and over confident. Where were their constructs of planetary scale? Just the mac cannons would obliterate the wraith let alone the nukes in the halo universe. The only way I could see them winning is with overwhelming numbers, which they have but it would be costly.

Todd was one of my favourite characters from Atlantis, I cant think of a bad episode involving him.
The dynamic between Colonel Sheppard and Todd was indeed quite entertaining.

You will not regret it. Honestly, i like it better then DS9. SG1 has great Lore as you go through it. And I loved the wraith as bad guys in Atlantis.

I guess the superior speed of SW-Universe ships and the shields on their Vessels would make a fight pretty one sided. And I would guess even the numbers are close between them.
Star Destroyers would cut through Wraith hives like hot knives through butter. They're giant, they're slow, they have easily exploitable FTL systems, and they have no real defense against energy based attacks if the ease with which Asgard weapons rip them apart is any indication.
DrakeMarvell Considering the averge Wraith ship 4 times the average SD and their cannons are known to even overload ancient shields, plus their high numbers I would say Wraith 8 out of 10.
Bleeters however the wraith ships are about 3to4 times the length of a star destroyer

The problem is the Wraith were smart enough to quickly adapt to and neutralize this attack.
They actually tried that. After the third time, they figured out how to block the beaming signal.

Well the Daedalus ambushed them and after they took countermeasure, the Tau'ri ship was basically only trying to dodge fire ans escape.
It did not loss his shield , but Hiveships got it out of combat only if few seconds.
During their war with ancients the drone weapons were so advanced that developing shields was pointless. Unable to match ancient tech the wraith relies on attrition and simply out produced the Lanteans.

I always thought it was strange how The Wraith had the capability to grow complex computer systems weapon systems navigation systems regenerative armor and all that but lacked the technological capability to grow Shield emitters. Biotechnology it's exactly that technology and as such should be upgradable. I thought that was interesting about The Wraith as well as the Pegasus replicators. They're technology hasn't really changed much over the course of millennia.
One explanation may be that the energy used to form shields is damaging to an organic hull, so raising a shield on a hive will continually degrade the hull so long as they are forced to use it. This means you can severely damage a Wraith vessel by bombarding it long enough for their own shield to do all the harm.
Given that prospect, it's more profitable to dedicate your energy to hull regeneration abilities rather than shields.
remember the ancient drones go threw shields like they're not even there look what happened to anubis' fleet when he attacked earth
The ancients had weapons that could bypass shields so the wraith never bothered with them, their hulls could take individual drone fire and start to regenerate almost instantly. They just couldn't handle a barrage of drones (nothing can).

Nice Video. Oddly enough I haven't seen a break down for an Ori Mothership yet. Did not know about the radiation weakness of the armor. Would make sense for why they never left Pegasus galaxy if true, but its one of those contradictory points of the plot
I came here as soon as I could. got caught up with the Rebels Mid-Season trailer.
hive ships has no shields? then it'll be easy to destroy them by beaming nukes right next to it or beaming it in the center area where there's a gap or space. daedalus tried it by beaming nukes inside those ships and it worked twice but it got stopped by the countermeasures of the hive ship. so I think a nuke in the center gap or maybe two nukes exploding next to it would destroy or badly damage the hive ship.
A nuke directly hitting caused massive damage to a hive ship, essentially leaving it disabled for the better part of several days before it was able to fly back to Atlantis. The problem is trying to get nuclear missiles through, as they can be intercepted by the hive ship's Darts, either through shooting them down, or by sacrificing themselves to take the hit meant for the hive ship. That's part of the reason why Lantean drone weapons are so effective despite being missiles. They're virtually impossible for the Darts to intercept in any meaningful number. However, towards the later seasons, we did see that human ships equipped with Asgard beam weapons are capable of heavily damaging or destroying Wraith hive ships with sustained strikes. The main problem though is that at most, there's maybe two or three human ships in the Pegasus galaxy at any one time, whereas there's a whole lot more hive ships and escorting cruisers.

Wraith is powerful but when compare them to the Ori make them fall to same level as goa'uld or less in my opinion ,but Wrait is 100% a Lantean fault.
The super hive outclassed any ship the ori ever fielded and wrecked a fleet of dedaulus class ships capable of taking out the ori in ship to ship combat. So baring the use of there god powers I feel the wraith would win when put against the oris followers.
Well I tend to forget how powerful Wraith is, when Asuran(replicator) become a real thread in SG:atlantis though, I need to re-watch series again I guess.
@@franzweiriviere2735 I mean sure a Wraith hiveship, can't stand up to an Ori mothership but the Wraith still win in all non capital ship engagements while the Goauld are on paar with the Ori only in infantry at best.
In terms of capital ship combat a superhive would of course be a very strong opponent, I think Ori beam weapons might be able to penetrate a little deeper than the Dedalus could seeing as they are stronger than Asgard beam weapons per shot but not enough to give them an edge, the main problem however remains in that superhive are incredibly rare seeing as Wraith can't produce the required ZPMs themselves.

The reason Hives use bioarmour is to defend against Drones, by increasing the number of needed munitions to take down ships thus draining Lantean magazines

In the show, every time they use drones against hives, they need a lot of them quickly draining their supplies and leaving them undefended against the remaining ships. That is their strength. They can be destroyed but in turn you expend your ammo and hives are rarely alone if they are serious.
It takes well over thirty to take down a hive whereas it only takes too to destroy a ha’tak
Drones seemed to pass right through Anubis's shields, whereas it takes dozens of drones to take out a hive ship due to its massive size. You might be on to something.

Now a little question, are you also considering ships form cartonns and animes or are you trying to obtain more information for your grounddocks series?
You know there is plenty of proof the main-capital ship in SG are not vanilla canon . I mean if we take their defense feat , we are reaching easy in gigatons level of durability . We know Atantis ship with full power energy shield powered by 3 ZPM managed to cover 70 % of the planet to protect it from the CME . Hell , Zelenka even said they have observed and analyze extinction event in the area . Of course , the CME who strike Daedalus was weird .
Always liked the Wraiths hive ships and cruisers especially with its organic nature bit weird how they get produced though.
It's not all that strange, the organism seem a bit similar to a fungus and it was probably the smartest thing to do against an enemy that could show up and blast any shipyard to pieces in two seconds flat, this way the Wraith only had to seed a number of hosts and run away and do the same thing on twelve other planets, the Ancients had to search every single planet to find them, spreading them thin and forcing them to give up local superiority unless they want the Wraith to grow entire fleets unopposed.

Can you make a video on what the “perfect” starship would be like? I mean one with as little weaknesses (exposed bridges, engines sticking out away from main body etc.) would it be a sphere or what? In space there’s no need for aerodynamics
There might be no need for aerodynamics, but having a smaller prow mean less surface for space debris to erode the hull and weaken the shield when going thousands of km/h, its much more economical than having half the ship pelted all the time.

All they got to do is find a planet that produces tons of lightning in the atmosphere and just let the ships absorb that energy for a while and there whole fleet would be all super hive and super cruiser ships all capital ships in there own right and they can grow a hive ship in 8 months and in a few months turn into a super hive and within a year they can have hundreds of ships to command and wage war against everyone , I would have fun commanding all of that lol 😎

Ive always called BS on the ability to predict where the wraith will have their hyperspace pauses. I mean even a fraction of a second in hyperspace is a very large distance in normal space.

50 light year maximum jump, with a 15 hour recovery... Not too limiting nor predictable if they just had the brains to not always use the minimum number of jumps and maximum range.
Enemy Observer: "Look, they are going from A to F, so they are going to drop out at B, C, D and E at these times, let's plan an ambush."
Wraith: "fastest route is A, B, C, D, E F... Why don't we do 35-45 light year jumps, sure it will make it A to J instead, but on any given jump we are dropping out of hyperspace in a 10 light year radius around that point. Someone has to spot where we drop out, and move their engagement to ambush us before we jump again. That's a lot of space to monitor and guess where we will emerge next..."
10 light year radius, figure out where they dropped out, and move your fleet to intercept all in under 15 hours? The only viable ambush points are at the destination, and if you figure a mere 5 light second radius as to where they will come out of hyperspace at the destination, you better have one hell of a fleet to ambush one Wraith hive ship (with 0-3 cruisers attached and a massive load of darts)
Pegasus doesn’t have a ton of races capable of interstellar travel. They probably aren’t used to competition, seeing as their last opponent were the Lantians, and they are even older than the G’ould

Wraith ships don't have shields.
There is not much in the way of armour that could survive being hit by a super MAC, other than having several kilometers of it!
The best way would be to stay out of range of the infinity.
@@chris746568462 I know that the mac rounds are a powerful weapon but I don't think even if it hit the hive it wouldn't destroy it. Wraith hive could take drone fire, take asgard beam weapons without shields, and their hull start to repair instantly. The mantles approach took the macs and it didn't have its shields up. The wraith are just as advanced as the forerunners.

Just the mac cannons would obliterate the wraith let alone the nukes in the halo universe. The only way I could see them winning is with overwhelming numbers, which they have but it would be costly.
