FUN FACT: Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In was the most popular song of 1969, winning Best Record and Best Performance by a Group at the 1970 Grammy Awards; and ranked #66 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of All Time.
Back when this song first came out, many of us actually believed that we had entered an age of peace and love. Sadly, it didn't last, but while it did, it was truly amazing.
We are just on the cusp of The Age of Aquarius. It will last for 2,000 years. If humanity puts in the work it will get there. When I was young and this song was a big hit, I really believed we were past wars and other horrible, destructive human behaviors. Pretty damn naïve from my perspective as an old man seeing how wrong I was. This song has special significance for me. I went to see 'Hair' when I was home on leave before being sent to Viet Nam. This was at the Aquarius Theater in Hollywood, CA. This song brought the house down! Still gives me chills.
Jayvee, you earn bonus points for being virtually the only UA-camr to react to this underrated classic. Well done! This is one of the greatest bass lines ever.
Jay...This song came from the Musical "Hair" and was one of the best songs in the show. The reason everyone is singing here is that when the song was done in the show the entire cast sung it. The 5th Dimension really did a great arrangement and brought the song to the mainstream radio popular audience. Not just the Theater goers. It's a shame that most groups today just don't have the talent we all took for for granted back then in the 70's. I'm glad you discovered it. Yes great arrangement. The opening song and the closing Song of the hair put together. They made a better arrangement of the closing song going to stage play so the stage play change let the sunshine into their arrangement.
I think that subliminally this is a call to Christ. The first is a promise (mind’s true liberation) with Aquarius representing Christ’s Living Waters. The second is a call to let Christ in. Let the sun ( Son, Jesus) shine in. Open up your heart! When you’re alone let Jesus shine in. The last scene looks to me like the Sermon on the Mount. I think their rendition of 'One Less Bell to Answer' is great and their version of Laura Nyro's songs, 'Stone Soul Picnic' and 'Sweet Blindness' were huge hits in 1968.
Laura Nyro was a hellava songwriter. She composed her first song when she was in her teens. She also wrote Eli's Coming recorded by Three Dog Night, And When I Die by Blood, Sweat and Tears, Stoney End recorded by Barbara Streisand and so many more. Sadly Laura passed away in her late forties from Ovarian cancer as did her mother. RIP Laura, we love and thank you for your beautiful music and you are missed so very much.
This was the first musical mashup I ever heard. Taking two numbers from the stage musical and later film “Hair”, “Aquarius” and “Let The Sunshine In” The Fifth Dimension made this work magically. I got to see the stage musical at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami, in @1969, even with its nudity.
Shout out to the late Joe Osborn of L.A.'s Wrecking Crew on bass, Tommy Tedesco on guitar, Larry Knechtel on keyboards, Hal Blaine on drums--the same team behind many of the Beach Boys and Partridge Family hits, among many others.
Great reaction! The man singing solo is Billy Davis jr. He is married to the woman in the group that was next to him. She is Marilyn Mccoo. I follow them on Instagram. I have commented on their page before. They actually reply back to you.
The entire group is so very talented in their own right. As a teen Ronald Townson toured with Dorothy Dandridge and Nat King Cole, and he had a part in the movie Porgy and Bess. He auditioned for the Metropolitan Opera and started his own Gospel choir. So talented.
The Cowsills were a family from Rhode Island, and they were the inspiration for the TV show The Partridge Family... but instead of using the group Cowsills for the show, they used Hollywood. The video version of them singing the song "The Rain, The Park, and Other Things" (1967) shows how young the children were then.
Wow, oh wow! My mom use to play this all the time when I was a kid. Still one of the 5th's best songs. Especially when "let the sun" kicks in!! Still gives me goose bumps:)
JV, love your reactions! Please keep 'em coming! I'm 64, grew up in the 60s and 70s, and something that often doesn't come across in history books and documentary films is the cheerful OPTIMISM of those otherwise dark times! But you can hear it in this great 5th Dimension song, and in the music of those times. Back then, it seemed to us young hippies that ANYTHING was possible! I still believe it!!!
❤❤❤Love The 5th Dimension!👍👍👍 They were the epitome of Flower Power Soul music back in the day. I was a little kid when this album came out. My mother bought it and I just loved it. I'd put my little go-go boots on and dance to this song.✌❤. Thank you Jayvee for reacting to this.
And also Love, Line, Angles & Rhymes. Everything in that song is just genious and Marilyn McCoo (with the baking harmonies of the rest of The 5th Dimension of course) owns it.

Aquarius /Let The Sunshing In, are both songs from the hit broadway show HAIR from the 1960's. The show about hippies and their anti war protest thinking. Billy Davis Jr. who song the last of the song was the son of a baptist preacher and was use to ad-libbing in the choir. He was chosen to sing the end of the song and totally ad-libbed the whole thing at the the recording session. The 5th Dimension were really a very popular group. Other songs to check out from them are Up Up and Away, One Less Bell To Answer, Stone Soul Picnic, Working on a Groovy Thing and Sweet Blindness. Also you should check out the theme song HAIR, the broadway musical, that was also a huge hit for a group called The Cowsills.
I hope you also see the movie this song is from. Hair is an amazing commentary on the era, the collision of the Vietnam War and the people who hoped 'Flower Power' would take the day. Sadly we are in more 'wars' than ever. As far as the 5th Dimension is concerned, all amazingly talented people, great music. I wish we had more like them.
Both these songs were from the infamous Broadway musical HAIR, which was playing at the time. It was notorious because of its onstage nudity as well as its antiwar stance. It was genius to blend these two songs together with this group's excellent harmonies.
This is one of two massive worldwide hits from them! The fabulous lyrics sum up perfectly the feel of a golden decade! They followed 1967s Scott McKenzie -San Francisco- Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair! Paying tribute to the birthplace of Folk in America!
Aquarius, one of the songs from the 1967 Off-Broadway musical “Hair,” (1968 moved to Broadway), music by Galt MacDermot and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado. The R&B group 5th Dimension recorded this in 1969, adding another song “Let the Sunshine In” to the track, also from the same Broadway show.
I was 6 years old when this song hit the airwaves, and remember my math teacher wearing a brown suede vest with the fringes. everyday damn day...oh, and his beads. Can't forget the beads. Love the song, and it stoking the memories of a carefree childhood.
Please react to: The 5th Dimension: -Wedding Bell Blues -Up, Up and Away -Stone Soul Picnic - Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All -One Less Bell to Answer -You Don't Have to Be a Star -Thanks!!!
Hey Jay! Thank you for finally getting around to the Fifth Dimension, a true classic group that you will have appreciate going down the rabbit hole with. "Sweet Blindness " and "Go where you wanna go " are 2 nuggets that are enjoyable.
I bought this on 45 when it came out and played it until my ears bled. After about a month I traded it to a friend, who wanted it, for a 1950 Archie comic. Not sure if he still has the 45, but I still have the comic. The 5th Dimension did a fun song called "Wedding Bell Blues" which really showcased Marilyn McCoo's voice. It had some success and I think you would enjoy it. Thanks for the reaction. It brings back some memories.
I was born in the 70's, so had no idea about the musical Hair until maybe the late 80's when it was running on cable. I knew who Marilyn McCoo was....from Solid Gold, lol. It was years later before I knew about The 5th Dimension or that she was one of those golden voices.
This is a medley from the rock opera "Hair." Many young people kinda sorta believed it COULD be the dawning of a new age, after the nonstop turmoil died down. Where the phrase "New Age" (woowoo stuff) originates. How naive we were...
Try not be cynical. We are only on the cusp of the New Age. It will last for approximately 2,000 years. I study The Ageless Wisdom Teachings and The New Age is definitely NOT "woowoo stuff"
Oh wow!!! I have loved this song for decades but seeing them singing it adds another wonderful "dimension" to it:)...they are amazing to watch as well..Love!!
I have been waiting for this! The joy of The 5th Dimension + the joy of Jovaughn discovering them. We practically wore out the vinyl as kids dancing around the house to this performance. Thank you for being a happy close to this week.
The age of Aquarius is supposed to come it being December 21, 2020. The male lead sing is Bill Davis, Jr. The female singer with the bangs and the flip is his wife Marilyn McCoo. They left the group and performed as Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. Check out their duet I Hope We get to Love In Time.
I first heard this song when I was 8 years old, it is as relevant and timely in it's message of peace and hope today as it was 50 years ago. I still remember the 45rpm record I bought it for a dollar and "Wedding Bell Blues" was the side B, both great songs. Thank you for sharing your musical journey with us. New sub, 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ !
I still remember watching this group on our black n white tv when I was 3-4 years old. I so loved this song. I’m 55 years old now and still love this song!
They actually auditioned for Motown but were turned down because they were told they sounded too Mellow. It was 1967 and it was during Motown's Psychedelic Soul Era. They were also once called The Black Mamas & Papas. This was from The Broadway Musical Hair. In A Comic Strip called The Family Circus, Jeffy one the Four Children sang "This Is The Dawning Of The Age Of Asparagus".
FUN FACT: Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In was the most popular song of 1969, winning Best Record and Best Performance by a Group at the 1970 Grammy Awards; and ranked #66 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of All Time.

"Wedding Bell Blues "was another Nyro song by 5th Dimension.
I wish more folks knew about Laura Nyro both as a songwriter and a performer!
I remember when this song came out and it still gives me goosebumps to this day! LOve It
Marilyn McCoo was host of the show called Solid Gold that would have the top hits and singers every week. you can check those out on UA-cam too
Hahaha the Solid Gold Dancers!!
@@horsefootrot8044 LOLOLOL!! They even made it to the big screen in Scrooged!😁
She was also in the soap Days of Our Lives
Loved Marilyn and Andy Gibbs hosting and wanted to be a solid gold dancer as a preteen 💗
I seriously wish they'd put this series on dvd. I remember watching it for the Solid Gold dancers more than anything else. :)
Hippy-dippy music. Everything is cool as love rules the world. We had the right of it and sure need a good dose of this today. Beautiful reaction!
Shout out to the late Joe Osborn of L.A.'s Wrecking Crew on bass, Tommy Tedesco on guitar, Larry Knechtel on keyboards, Hal Blaine on drums--the same team behind many of the Beach Boys and Partridge Family hits, among many others.
that Bass is a sound from heaven.
Great reaction! The man singing solo is Billy Davis jr. He is married to the woman in the group that was next to him. She is Marilyn Mccoo. I follow them on Instagram. I have commented on their page before. They actually reply back to you.
Lauana Simmons Please send them this reaction! They’ll probably love it! 😊
Yes please share this
This song has some of the best vocals! Damn it gives me goosebumps.
From the musical Hair....also a great movie
The entire group is so very talented in their own right. As a teen Ronald Townson toured with Dorothy Dandridge and Nat King Cole, and he had a part in the movie Porgy and Bess. He auditioned for the Metropolitan Opera and started his own Gospel choir. So talented.
Wedding Bell Blues and One Less Bell To Answer, two more huge hits for them
They were an amazing singing group. Their harmonies were uncompromised.
Gotta hear stone soul picnic...... by the fifth dimension so good
I like your analogy about the church...............................................the vibe.
The 5th Dimension is such an underrated group. My parents loved them and went to several of their shows.
They were very popular back then and won 8 Grammys
This song won a Grammy in 1969 song of the year I think. It was a billboard number one for six straight weeks. It’s one of the first in my memory.
Super happy you finally got around to this video, this song was a huge hit back in the day of us hippy minded generation.
I know I definitely had been waiting for someone to request this song. Phew. I'm better now.
One of my favorite reaction about this song...by the way, this song is amazing. Perfect harmony and message! ❤️
One of the many great songs from the musical “Hair”. Another great song from that show was the title song “Hair” as performed by the Cowsills.
The Cowsills are a amazing group.
Marily McCoo's voice is absolutely beautiful. Check out One Less Bell to Answer.
And also Love, Line, Angles & Rhymes. Everything in that song is just genious and Marilyn McCoo (with the baking harmonies of the rest of The 5th Dimension of course) owns it.
Just got their greatest hits album on vinyl! Great group!
I am an Aquarius and have always loved this song! Loved it in the musical/ movie Hair !! ❤️❤️❤️
Hey, Loved that you celebrated Marilyn and Billy with this video. Did you know they were back on the Billboard R&B chart in 2021 with their new CD Blackbird Lennon McCartney Icons? Would love to see your reaction to one of their videos. Here is a link to Blackbird the title track... @ and Ticket to Ride @.
Oh man. This just put a big smile on my face. I was off grid for 10 years living in the forest and this song was on my playlist. I listened almost everyday. Thanks JV and peace everyone.
Why’d you come back? Lol. I’m about to get off the grid myself I think. Or I want to
@@laylascott6096 Didn't really want to leave but life circumstances forced my hand. I miss the quiet, the forest, the animals, the open fires, home grown food. I'll be moving to the mountains soon but it's not off grid. The highway's not too far unfortunately. But it's better than the city any day. Peace and good luck with your off grid adventure.
JayVee, the majority of the Soul singers of the 60s and 70s started out singing in church. 🥰🎼💕
Hair by the Cowsills is amazing. The video is fun.
...and The Cowsills were the real life inspiration for the TV singing family The Partridge Family. Just a bit of musical trivia.
It's from a '60s play. That Miloš Forman movie came out in 1979.
Brother's Johnson "Strawberry Letter 23"
Oh yes
Yes! And "Stomp".
Fish Kungfu Stomp is fantastic!
Yes! One of my favorite songs from the 70s. ✌
Everybody take it to the top we gonna Stomp all night, in your neighborhood, gonna feeeeel alright....❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love this song! It truly is the Age of Aquarius!
Marilyn McCoo has such a beautiful voice, and they gave us some wonderful songs.😍
I love watching when I see a song really affecting you in such a deep way. It is inspiring!!
Was same age. Our hippy bus driver was the same
I love the bass line on Let The Sunshine In.
This what music uses to be. Uplifting and self reflective.
I love this. I think you may also like "Oh Happy Day", by the Edwin Hawkins singers. And, Wedding Bell Blues by the 5th Dimension is real good too,
I listened to this on my way back home from school on a transistor radio!
Please react to: The 5th Dimension: -Wedding Bell Blues -Up, Up and Away
-Stone Soul Picnic - Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All -One Less Bell to Answer -You Don't Have to Be a Star -Thanks!!!
Meg Delany Oh, I had forgotten about “Up Up and Away” GOOD song!
It was years later before I knew about The 5th Dimension or that she was one of those golden voices.
preach on.. good stuff here!
That was fun. I haven't heard and seen this in a long long time. Such a great song 🌞 Thanks for the reaction. Your face and big smile 😁 said it all.
Released in March 1969...spent 6 weeks at #1 on the charts in the Spring of 1969....a CLASSIC!!!
This is a medley from the rock opera "Hair." Many young people kinda sorta believed it COULD be the dawning of a new age, after the nonstop turmoil died down. Where the phrase "New Age" (woowoo stuff) originates.
How naive we were...
People think it’s happening now too..in new age circles. Something is happening, but it’s not that
Try not be cynical. We are only on the cusp of the New Age. It will last for approximately 2,000 years. I study The Ageless Wisdom Teachings and The New Age is definitely NOT "woowoo stuff"
@@barnowl5774 Prove it, then.
Oh wow!!! I have loved this song for decades but seeing them singing it adds another wonderful "dimension" to it:)...they are amazing to watch as well..Love!!
I used to seriously have the hots for Marilyn McCoo. Watching this, I guess I still do.
Yep
Me too.
True confessions
Haha
Norm Weldon waited on her and billy many times in Beverly Hills. Beautiful and classy couple
that rhymed lol
One of the best songs ever recorded! Still holds up today. The 5th Dimension are sublime. Will always love Marilyn McCoo :)
I have been waiting for this! The joy of The 5th Dimension + the joy of Jovaughn discovering them. We practically wore out the vinyl as kids dancing around the house to this performance. Thank you for being a happy close to this week.
Another great late sixties singing group to check out is The Brotherhood of Man and United We Stand.
I was 13 when this song came out and It's still one of my favourites. Such a talented group of singers and so under rated.
Believe me..if my protestant church sang like that I would have attended more often 😄
I remember seeing them on Variety shows in the early70's....ahh memories....I was 9 in 69 when this came out....
Thank you for reviewing this outstanding performance! They were amazing. I saw them at the Greek Theater in 1968.
Love these two songs from the musical "Hair". Aquarius started the movie and Let the Sunshine ended the movie.
I still remember watching this group on our black n white tv when I was 3-4 years old. I so loved this song. I’m 55 years old now and still love this song!
My understanding is that they were teachers who decided to harmonize one day, liked how they sounded and became super stars! Great songs!!
Such a joyful song sung by the most beautiful people! The 5th Dimension were singing for us for many years! So well loved!
Thank you so much for watching and reacting.
Imagine being four years old and hearing this on the radio. Yeah, I had a good childhood.
Extremely excellent man. It really, really was. Now that is what class is all about. Thank you brother. Thank you so very, very much.
From the hit musical of the 60's, A musical that represented our generation. HAIR.
Great song, great group. 1969 was an excellent year for music - among other things. Sharing! Thank you, Jayvee!
