The gentleman singing lead in the second song of this 2-song medley from the musical _Hair,_ is Billy Davis Jr. He and the lovely lady in the mostly-yellow blouse, the incomparable Marilyn McCoo, were married in 1969 (a fact that hit me hard in the 70s, when I was a teen with a bit of a crush on Miss McCoo -- Mr Davis definitely 'married up' - lol). Their Number 1 hit 'You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show)' would be a great song to react to. They became the first African American married couple to host a network television series, The Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. Show, on CBS in summer 1977, and are about to celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary.
Fun fact : Billy davis jr. misplaced his wallet in nyc . The guy that found it was one of the producers of Hair . He called Billy , told him about his wallet. He invited them backstage after the play . Billy asked him if the 5th dimension could sing those songs . And the rest , they say , is history .
@@joannerichards1750 It is JoAnne . I watched an interview with them recently in which they talked about it . They wrote an autobiography a few years ago .
Yes, this (really two songs) was from the 1967 musical "Hair," which was made into a movie in the seventies. This song combined two songs from the musical and was released in 1969 and it was a huge hit, becoming emblematic of just the era you pinpointed.
I remember as a kid the summer of 69 being kind of spooky, wild and mysterious with the Manson murders, the "moon landing" ,woodstock and other wild urban myths going on that summer and this song encapsulated it all perfectly..It made us feel like something good was trying to break thru..
This song bookended Hair, with Aquarius as the opening number and Let The Sunshine In closing the film. You're in for a real treat whenever you get around to watching this movie - I'm sure you'll love it. As musicals go, it's actually pretty epic, both story-wise and musically (tons of other excellent and now-classic tunes throughout). A side note on this signature line from the song: _When the Moon is in the seventh house_ _And Jupiter aligns with Mars_ _Then peace will guide the planets_ _and love will steer the stars_ This actually makes sense in terms of astrological symbolism (setting aside whether astrology is actually valid): the Moon is associated with emotions, the seventh house concerns relationships, Jupiter is associated with idealism and generosity, and Mars with action. Whether or not these alignments portend the kind of peace and love suggested in the lyrics, they'll usually be given a pretty positive interpretation overall.
I was in my college production in the 80's. So much fun that was. And I was in Texas no less. Oh yes, the communities embraced us like a blanket filled with small pox. But we did it anyway and the ones that saw it really loved it. We got to change some minds. Doing it in San Francisco would have been a blast. I did move to the Bay area eventually... Late 80's
The guy singing solo was Marylin McCoo's husband Billy Davis Jr. The 5th Dimension was huge in their day. There are some songs that turn a new chapter when they come out. This was one of them. No one had ever heard anything like it before. It set a whole new tone. If you listen to Jesus Christ Superstar, which came out much later, you will hear echos of this sound.
As a lot of folks have mentioned the bass-line. Probably performed by Carol Kaye as part of „The Wrecking Crew“. She was the only female player on the crew. However there were several bass players. Their song “One Less Bell to Answer” has always been my favorite and really worth a listen. There’s a video of the group performing that live on “Soul Train” …..brings back great memories. Cheers
All I can say is "What a lovely girl". It's a beautiful thing to see someone's "spirit" in full flight, on full display -uninhibited! THE WORLD COULD USE MORE OF THAT ANGELA 🙏🏻👍👍👍👍👍
The 5th Dimension wowed the mainstream with opulent harmonies and made every song they covered pure giddy joy. "Aquarius" rode the wavy-gravy exposition, capturing the hippie counterculture through music.
I was in 6th grade then. Our elementary school teachers took us across the way to our Junior HS at auditorium a few hundred yards away to listen to this. Hundreds of helium balloons and decorations. Afterwards, they gave each of us (hundreds) a balloon to walk outside singing while we released them to the sky and up to Aquarius. Yeah, it was a different time, and wonderful in such ways.
I was commissioned many decades ago by Marilyn McCoo to do a needle point designed...just wanted you and your fans to know, Marilyn was a very sweet and genuine person in real life...always nice to know she was and I'm sure still is compared to many other celebrities, as beautiful inside in addition to the outside...love your music evaluations!!
I love The 5th Dimension. Hopefully the younger generations discover them. The Age of Aquarius is just getting underway and it’ll be several decades for the transition away from the Age of Pieces.
Billy Davis Jr. doing the soulful singing, he is married to Marilyn McCoo the beautiful lady who sang " One less Bell to answer " they have been married for over 50 years and are still performing today ❤️❤️
The soloist is Billy Davis Jr, he is the husband of the taller female singer(Marilyn McCoo), they later had a song, “You Don’t Have To Be A Star”! The song is from the movie Hair!
once again your reaction was priceless. Grew up with these and so many other GREAT singers and bands. The 60's and later the 70's brought us such feel good music. Something the singers today could learn from. His name was Billy Davis and his vocals were simply astounding.

Let the Sunshine In is really only the ending part of the song Flesh Failures from the musical... the original Broadway cast recording of it is really a pretty good song
I just love this song. They were an outstanding group of singers. Billy Davis and Marilyn McCoo are still married to each other. They had a successful solo career.
They were Hippies. This song came out when I was pre-pubescent. It played on the radio all the time, none of us understood the song but we loved it!!! Btw, you’re the 5th Generation growing up to enjoy the 5th Dimension!
Marvelous, Angela! Thanks for reacting to this super pop-rock vocal group from the ever-lovin' 1960's. My first intro to the 5th Dimension was "Up, Up and Away." They scored multiple airplay hits, some were composed by the young composer Laura Nyro (Stone Soul Picnic, Blowin' Away, etc.). Billy Davis (Otis Redding voice) and Marylin McCoo (tall, wavy-hair burnette) eventually married, still are today. Hear "Wedding Bell Blues" (also Laura Nyro).
"If I Can Reach You" is the ballad you really need to hear by them,it totally showcases Marilyn McCoos vocal capabilities,or "One Less Bell To Answer"," Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All","On The Beach In The Summertime" or possibly their finest album track "8:20 Latham"

This is one of my all-time favorite pick-me-up songs. Yes it's all sunshine and Good Vibes, but Billy keeps it real in the second song talking about feeling mistreated and being lonely. Music is therapy ❤
Best chair dancing ever!! You were really feeling this one! You are right both songs are from the Broadway musical Hair, which was later made into a movie. Love seeing you enjoy this one, it was one of my favs growing up🥰❤️

Angela, I can't even guess how many hundred times I have heard these songs over the years, but this was my favourite time, getting to listen to it while watching you groove to the music!!! Thank you so much for that! Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. in particular were super talented so any time you wish to come back to this group don't let us stop you!
The 5D : Marilyn McCoo , the gorgeous lead vocal ---------her husband, Billy DAvis jr on 2nd lead ------------Florence LaRue --------------Ron Townson , the booming voiced tenor ------& Lamonte Maclemore on bass---------------song hit #1 in the summer of '69.
I loved that moment of recognition! Angela, you are are such a beautiful young lady who seems to have a personality that matches her beauty! I've been around a while and it's a rare quality, so I hope you hold onto it forever! You have a beauty and youthful innocence that makes you appear forever 19! There's a very, very fortunate young man out there and I hope he knows how lucky he is when you meet him!
What a memory flashback ridding with my Mom in our brand new Chevrolet Caprice built like a tank and the 5th Dimension is playing on the stereo in the wonderful year of 1969.
In the late 60's and early 70's, the whole horoscope scene was very popular. People were always talking about it. Although this song is from the musical Hair, it was played for so long on the radio and TV. I love The 5th Dimension's version.
OMG, I hear this song and I'm 13yo again. Headphones on, staying up late, listening to records, spending the Friday night at my sister house. This album, Sgt. Pepper, Hair and Mamas and Papas.
Whenever I hear Let the sunshine in all I wanna do is like in the movie, go outside, start running while singing my heart out and just feeling good.....
Great song! Billy Davis had such a distinctive voice. Angela, here is another great bit of trivia for you - Billy Davis and his wife Marilyn McCoo [now enjoying their 52nd year of marriage] were a duo musically, as well. Their "You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show)" is a song you would enjoy checking out. Great reaction, as usual - really like you with your hair wavy.
This came out when I was very young and it was on the radio all the time. I have fond memories of the next-door neighbors, where people would hang out in their backyard a lot at night and just have small spontaneous parties. One of my favorite images is they had their little record player out there on the back patio and they had the 45 RPM single to this. Age of Aquarius was on side one and then let the sunshine in was on side two. They would play it and the tween and teen neighborhood girls, some of them my babysitters, would be out there in their bare feet and their short shorts and their tube tops doing these kind of sneaky serpentine dances in the moonlight to Age of Aquarius. And then of course when that ended they would go over and flip the record over, and we would all just dance our asses off to Let the Sunshine In. it's just so joyous. HAIR was a really well-known musical from the late '60s or early '70s before it was a movie. We ended up with the record album because my mom actually liked it a lot. Same with Godspell.
Now go back and listen to it again all by yourself and " feel it." Once you let yourself feel it, you got it. But there's nothing like dancing when no one is watching.
Nice! Loved your dancing. That lead singer is the legendary Billy Davis, married to co-singer Marilyn McCoo,. (The one with the lighter hair and bangs.)
Bit of trivia. During the original, 1969 "Woodstock" Music Festival, in between bands, the crowd erupted singing "Aquarius / Let The Sunshine In" from The 5th Dimension. Not sure if it was raining then, but "Let The Sunshine In"would have been an appropriate song if so.
Marilyn McCoo is still gorgeous!
Marilyn McCoo ❤
I think she's one of the most beautiful women in the world.
Love when Billy Davis takes us to Church in Let the Sun Shine in. What a voice

Wedding Bell Blues, Up Up and Away, so many great songs by The 5th Dimension!
