  • When your putting game starts to head in a negative direction, one of the first questions we ask is should I get a new putter? The thrill of choosing a new putter allows us to blame it on the arrow and not the archer. The problem, there are tons of putter molds to choose from. Some might even say too many.
How do we decide what putter is for us, and what factors go into this monumental decision? The reality is, outside of an ace we are going to have to putt on every hole. Although the best putter is always a driver underneath the basket, we'll need to look at a few key factors to select the best putter for our game. What are those critical pieces? You'll have to watch to find out!

After several years and dozens of molds, I have settled on the DD Deputy 175g in the classic blend plastic. Great grip, fits my hand nicely with its fairly shallow profile.
Love the straight flight outside of circle one with a little extra glide to get my spin putts there. A big bonus is they are readily available! I have 15 identical Deputies. A special thanks to the sales team at DD!

We watched this video last week when it came out. I'm honestly pretty happy with my putter molds but the part about finding your grip by tossing the disc up and catching it naturally was something new. The way I catch the disc (fan grip) was about the complete opposite of how I had been putting most of the time. It felt completely wrong and like I had no control at all. But I'm generally willing to try any suggestion from someone who knows more than me. 3 rounds later it still feels entirely wrong but I've improved my made putts percentage by at least 30 percent, my misses are landing a lot closer to the cage, and I got my first legit birdie ever with a long putt. Thanks Robbie!

There are good things in your future when you're willing to make changes to improve and allow results to drive your direction. As a coach (different sport - but same principles apply) I can tell you that it takes change to improve. Too many students want to improve by doing the same thing they've always done. Love hearing that you took the leap and stuck with it long enough to see if it really worked or not. The initial discomfort will always be there when you make a change. I hope you've continued to improve, but something tells me you have!

A big factor for me is that I want a putter that is widely available and not coveted by collectors and scalpers. Signature discs, special runs of a plastic, etc. are all out. I had some original Imperial Eagle P2s that I loved but I ended up trading them so that I could start using something more replaceable. You don't want to be in a situation where if you lose or damage a putter somehow that you can't replace it or have to pay $$$ for one. I make exceptions to this for mids and drivers, but for putting putters, where I am going to want multiple for practice and possibly replacements, they've got to be commonly available.

I used to putt with zero soft pures (for about a year and a half) and I have 6 of those. A couple weeks ago I realized that as I've gotten more comfortable with putting I don't like the way they sit in my hand - they don't feel like they fill my hand and are gripped securely - so I went on a putter hunt. Visited my FLDGS last Friday and picked up every. Mold. On. The. Shelf looking for one that feels right in my hand. Once I found the two best ones I gave them a few tosses to check the release and from that I came home with an MVP Anode in Electron plastic. Saturday was a tournament and (possibly a poor choice) I took that one new anode as my putter for the day.
It passed the test! I felt confident with it in my hands and didn't have any issues crop up, so now I own 3. I hadn't heard the "Only use this putter for 2 months" advice before but it makes sense. The stack of pures will have to sit on the bench while I learn consistency with the new guys in town.
Unexpected finding during this process: measurements are nice to have, but hand feel is king in choosing a mold. I HATE beaded discs. I don't like how they feel in any throwing grip, I don't like how they make the disc deeper...and the anode has a (small) bead. It turns out I was excluding half of the putter molds out there because of my preferences for throwing discs. When I picked up every putter in the store the top 5 I liked best were all beaded.
Leave your preconceptions at the door and find what feels good!

Got interested in disc golf, bought 2x innova starter pack (avair, shark, leopard in dx). Realised this was my new thing, bought an MVP blackhole basket. Wanted a bunch of putters to practice with.... only thing available in a 5 pack was DD Judge. Yeah, I'm a Judge guy now. I'll throw the avair for longer attempts because they're ~145g, but the 175g Judge is just so consistent.... sure that it probably because I throw 100 practice putts a day, but that's what it takes.

I mainly use the 3S for hotter days and my 4S for cooler days, but it depends on how they feel while I’m practicing before a round. I do have a dozen more Wizards in various plastics though because I was trying to figure out which plastic I liked the best for both putting and throwing. For putting (not driving or utility shots), 10 putters can be spendy. 5 works well. Even 3 (doing Uli's 3 disc drill) works.
The huge thing is to actually practice. Many don't realize 200 shots only takes about 15 mins and it does wonders, even after a few days to a week. In fact, the results may addict you to practicing as it also benefits the long game (anecdotally, I tested this during quarantine throwing at least 200 a day for about 45 days--results: better release on longer shots (greatly reduced grip lock), more distance, and cleaner lines. I found the last motion in your putt, your wrist and grip, uses the same muscle/motion as the full throw (backhand)).
    Being a Push/Spush putter, I use a Warlock 175g for C1x and a little C2
I use a DX Roc for some C2.
and a Prodigy PA4 for deeper C2 and a little beyond.
Eventually people are going to have multiple putters in the bag...kind of like how ball golfers have multiple wedges. Putters rock.

Complete beginner - using the EMAC Judge at 173g to putt but also using it for approaches. Can't tell what kind of plastic - don't see it on the stamp unless "prime burst" is a plastic. Comfortable in the hand - easy to grip. I ordered a 2nd Judge for most of the same reasons presented in this video: practice with the same disc, have a separate disk for approach, get fundamentals down with the same disc before experimenting. 2 months is different across players: instead of time duration, how many putts would you say is appropriate?

I've been playing for coming up to a year, but played ultimate and freestyle and just throwing discs for a long time to a very high standard. So taking up disc golf has been fun and quite easy mostly, except putting! I bought a jk aviar-x which I love for driving and throwing but never got the hang of it for putting. Star aviar 3 feels better and I'm getting a nicer release on that. Then got a z zone which I'm good at long throw in putts, to the extent I've started just throwing it for my putts rather than trying to do a putting motion. From there I started throwing my esp comet for my putts. It feels like an ultimate disc in that I can pop it out almost like a short airbounce pass. So suddenly my years of throwing discs can be used in my putting game. So it's a mess really. At different distances I like different discs, and for putts within 4m I almost prefer throwing my destroyer as I'm usually close to parked with that. It sounds stupid to say it and I'm not up my own ass, but because I'm so used to having good disc skills I find it almost impossible to putt with this whole new kind of non-throw. Does anyone have any advice? I'm hooked on the sport and want to compete, and I'm not sure if I should just embrace my mad range of putting styles and discs or just force myself to follow a more traditional route. I just don't know if it makes sense for me to do that or not

Since there aren't any shops to go to in my area, and I'm not yet a year into playing, I currently have 2 envys, 2proxys, 2 links, 2 aviars, a swan, a Pierce and a P model lol. I think I've finally landed on the Envy as I like a shallow putter without a bead. (The Envy was the first putter I bought too. I know, I'm crazy.)

I'm very new to Disc Golf and very late to this video. But after much consideration. I am going with the Prime Judge for my 2 month journey. Some close runner ups were the Dagger and the Luna. AND I still reserve the rights to my HALO STAR AVIAR that I found for later.... But per your recommendation. I will stick with 1 disc(x2) and get comfortable and consistent.

I LOVED Pro D Banger GTs in my first year, but when I went to buy more for practice I could only find Putter Line and I don't like the feel of Putter Line. I putted with Fierces for a while and liked how straight they were but had a lot of spit outs because I was putting too hard and on too much hyzer. Swapped to Soft Pures and loved that those would basically drop straight down if they hit anything, then Rekos because I was picking up a bunch of Kastaplast stuff, and with Pures I started putting flatter and letting the putter actually fly. Now I'm back on Fierces because I can just kinda toss them and they float straight at chain height for like 50 feet with minimal effort. I am picking up a handful of the new P2s tomorrow though just to have something a little heavier and more stable because I'd like to be able to commit a little more at lower distances without worrying about bouncing out, and the Fierces are light enough that at really low power it's easy to pull them off line.

I started with theowing the Disrcaft Fierce, but wanted a more overstable Putting putter, so i went to my favorite DG shop and askes one of the workers there og he could help me. He was very patient and good, so i endes up with the D Line P2.
After changing the putters, i also wanted to change my Putting style to pure spin Putting.
Now i cant imagene Putting with anything other than P2, and maybe some Pilots for longer C2 Putting.

I have a question I have been playing for a year I went from Aviar to roach and now to base plastic zones due to constant 20-30mph of wind in my area. I like putting with the zones but should I use putters that are less stable? Or buy some of the soft or putter line zones that just came out? Thanks great video.

My first putter was Aviar PA 174 DX, then D)-line P2 172, tried a beaded Yeti Aviar R-Pro 176, Jawbreaker Roach 173, Classic Burst Deputy 172, Premium Jokeri 178, Active Line Sensei; Exo Soft Link; so I use all for practice, inside circle putts Yeti, Roach, upshots and drives P2 , JOKERi and Sensei. Have yet to give the Link any real time. Deputy and Aviar PA are my flippy putters. I like to fFH flick and scoober the Roach, JOKERi is like a Zone .

I disagree slightly with the comment that they all pretty much fly the same within the circle, to me glide makes a huge difference within the circle. For example; I switched to the luna for a while and constantly was hitting off the cage just a few inches low, then went to the roach (flies like a luna but more glide) and suddenly I was making those putts. Not that the luna is bad, just not good for my throw where I rely on glide. Loving the content robie. Keep it up

still a beginner and I've tried to accumulate 1 ofs in a lot of different flight numbers per midrange and putters just to get acclimated to different shot types and shapes. Currently, as far as putters go, I have 1 of each of a Paige Pierce Fierce, a DX Aviar (innova beginner set), Magnet (DC beginner set), Pure, and Zone.. little bit of everything inbetween stable and understable. I really like the way the Aviar feels for putting, and for approach/throwing, I've loved the Fierce and Pure but have had some shapes where the fade of the Zone has come in handy. Any thoughts on where I should go from here, maybe which 1-2 I should strictly use to see if it's "the one for me" or not
