    That Rebel crawdad is said to be the BEST bass lure in the USA. It works when most others fail.. You can get smaller versions too. Keep it in there. Also remember you can catch big fish on small hooks but not small fish on big hooks.. The line on the bobbin gets a 'memory' on it and is usually a rat's nest when you unwind it.. I like the line in a 2 to 3" diamter coidl like you had here. Replace the the line every year too. Good video..

    I like your lure selection, but a couple things that I always like to have when I go fishing just for fun are a mini-spoon (silver and gold) and a few "beetle spins". they work real well here in the southeastern US. Cheaply available at walmart and very small as lures go. Also I like little tube grubs that you can stuff with attractant, and small mini rattle baits. That's why I prefer a tube kit, because it can hold slightly larger bait.

    Nice job! I like how you kept it individual!!! Your kit has great ideas that work for you and can easily be adapted by anyone to work for themselves and their own ideas! Very nice!!!!

    You can use the little ziplocks from craft stores or Wal-Mart's craft sections to keep your line in. I keep my hooks on safety pins for convenience and you may need a safety pin. Good choice to include braided line. If this kit sets in a car for 5 years then is needed, the mono is brittle but braided is good for many years. Plus braided is 1/4 the diameter of mono. That's 4x the line in the same space. I would include kahle (or circle) for trot lining. the fish stay on that way. Size 6 for carp and 3/0 for cats. Cats are an easily obtained and are in A lot of creeks where you think it's too shallow. Carp are sometimes available in large numbers and get large.
    A small gill net is all you need for small fish. No skill needed and you will catch way more fish with way less effort. Btw. Small hooks catch birds (including turkeys) better than most woodcraft bird traps.

    Man I thought the bobbin idea was one of my originals. No joke two weeks ago I asked my mom if she had any spare bobbins. I took three and then pot some power pro line on it. I thought it was genius, man seems like someone else figured it out way ahead of me. cool kit. I have my kit in a film canister. one tip I learned a long time ago was you can put you hooks on a sheet of parchment paper, then cover the hook with clear packaging tape. When you need a hook you just pop it out of the paper.

    Great Kit Joe, one thing that I always point out to folks on their kit is this... weather you use it or not make sure and replace out your monofilimant line once per year to protect yourself from dry rot or UV damage if you use it. I don't personally want to loose a fish in a survival situation because I was to cheap to replace my line out in my kit.

  • @Budojourney

    For loose spare fishing line, Ive used an old credit card/plastic I.D. card cut into thick "H" shape and hand wrapped many feet of line which i secured to the card on each end with electrical tape.

    Nice kit. My view on a survival fishing kit is to catch small fish and then use the innards as bait for bigger ones. It can get you a snack and it should work everywhere (Canadian winter included). I saw a show before (Bearfoot Bushman I think) where he had some fishing line and a few hooks on the inside of his hat behind the flap. The knife is a really good idea as you could possible remove the barb off a hook with the nail file if you had too.

  • @mikehdgs

    for a cleaner spool for your line, you can utilize an old plumber tape spool. The spool is set inside the cover and it snaps into place, that's where you can leave a little bit of line hanging out, that acts as a holder and your line is secured inside without any threat of being snagged. Old first aid tape kits are the same mechanism, but are rather larger in size than the plumbers tape spool.
    IF you use eyelids, you can feed the line through them, bring out the access line you will be using to fish with, snap the cover in place over the line that is coming off the spool, then keep the entire spool secured through a pinky finger/ring finger of your base hand on your rod. Simple line movement is still achieved with your free hand for your bait control.
    Hope it helps some of you guys out there.

    In my experience the small Rapala Broke Back Minnow is the best small lure I have ever used for pan fishing. I caught about 10 sun fish and blue gill in about 2 hours from a small Tennesse creek once. I had a small untra light rod and spinning real. I have never used a crank bait by hand. Those twirl tail grubs are useable and work quite well by bouncing them off the bottom, but they work best (especially with crappy) by a slow crank, twitch, and slow crank. Just speaking from years of experience using artificial lures. I use 4-6 lb. Stren for pan fish and Crappy because it has less stretch then Berkley and is in my experience the strongest and longest lasting monofilament line. I also use the spider wire for many uses. It is important to know the knots when using it for fishing though.

    Nice kit Joe! I'm heading off now to spool a bobbin with spiderwire! Plus 1 on the ranger bands. My kit is a bit bigger and I have a small buzz bait in it, great top water lure for when the water is very weedy it doesn't get all tangled up as bad.

    The se thing happened to me with the line, the tape goo got on it and made it snap on me when I was on a trip. If you have an old credit card or piece of cardboard or something cut out a little square and wrap it around it. I did it and it works great!

    I know I'm late in the game on comments here but I highly suggest using braided line (what you called microfiber) more than mono. You can get higher pound tests that are thinner than equivalent pound mono line, it lasts much longer, and is super resistant to abrasion. I used to use nothing but mono, but now I use only braid. I used PowerPro on my nicer and larger setups, and something like Spiderwire EZ Braid on cheap kits.

    Nice video, BTW you can get plastic treble hook covers. Quick search on ebay for "treble hook covers" or "treble hook caps" should get results, I presume you could get them for the size hook on your crawdad.

  • @cowboy7x
    @cowboy7x 12 років тому

    I always use ranger bands (bike tire inner tubes) instead of rubber bands. Doubles as fire starter and won't weather and crumble. Small point.....but works.

  • @quercus4730
    @quercus4730 10 років тому +2

    Just tie a few feet of 4 or 6lb. fishing line on your 50lb. line and use # 6 or 8 gold eagle claw hooks with this you can catch a lot of pan fish to eat and use the guts and parts left over to catch catfish on your bigger line or crawdads in a trap or meat in a land trap. You are a lot better off with stuff to catch small fish because they are easier to catch. You can probably catch enough small fish to eat and trap with and if you do catch a large fish then you can toss back the little ones if you want. It usually gets a lot harder in the winter.

  • @1manvsworld

    Good choices for top water or aka dry flies, griffiths gnat sizes 16,18,20 brown elk hair caddis sizes 14,16,18, mosquito sizes 16,18, 20, renegade, 14,16,18, 20. wooly worm size 10,12,14. blue wing olive size 16,18, 20.
    Most of these flies work well because they resemble so many different bugs and not just the ones they are named for. Important to point out that flies as small as 18 and 20 will require 4lb or less line. Also a small bottle of gunk will keep them afloat longer.

    Spiderwire rocks. A small piece of aluminum foil and a bottle cap rattle lure. Use a small to medium treble and 2 bbs to make a racket while you pull it through the water. Combined with the aluminum foil and you're in business.

    put a small lighter in there so you can start a fire and cook your turtle. there is a product called 'bankline' that comes in different thicknesses and THAT is the stuff for camp lashings, trotlines, etc. You can also improvise a 'gorge hook' which was used for thousands of centuries to catch fish and it is just like a big cactus spine

    I know this video is old but you should check out yo yo fishing reels. There basically auto fishers so you can be catching fish while doing more productive things like building shelter if you did really get lost in the woods. The flat trigger models require less to set off so there a little better than the wire models.

    For me when I do absentee fishing I found that using circle hooks has been ideal it makes Un hooking a snap since they always twist to the corner of a fish or turtles mouth which let's me release the ones I don't need if I catch a ton of fish or more than I can eat cause they don't swallow the hooks also meaning I don't get hooked gutting the fish as I've had happen twice before

    Not a bad kit at all. One thing of concern; towards the end of the video you were saying you didn't like how you stored your monofilament and you were thinking of putting it on a thread bobbin. I think the mono would develop a memory and the last thing you want it the line coming off in 1/4" loops. Braided line is probably fine though.

    • @ryannlarge8414
      @ryannlarge8414 8 років тому +1

      +Joel He would be better of saying bullocks to the mono as yes it does have a terrible issue with memory and will retain the shape of the spool.

    I think it's easy for those who are so "urban-ized" to not think about adding fishing line and gear into their BOB, or even a camping trip. I didn't have anything like this in mine until a couple years ago. With all the other "just in case" gear I carry, I believe the reason(s) for carrying this stuff is just as valid.

      It's totally worth it. I use it for salmon fishing and typically if I get a snag on the bottom I lose part of the lure rather than the line. Sometimes I'm afraid I will break my rod and other times I pull in parts a just a broken rapala and I only use 20 # test.

      +Arno van Kampen (Arendsoog) And having the basic stuff already, like sinker and hooks tied on so all you have to do is add bait or have your favorite lure on. You decide. Something not considered is a stringer. You can't count on catching a lot of fish in a short time, so keeping them alive while you wait is something to consider. If its cold, no problem. Just some thoughts.
