I don't understand Japan, they vowed to defend Taiwan and yet they fear offending Beijing, What is the logic behind this?
CCP had nothing better to do other than having disputes with other countries, while their poorer population which accounts for 600 million people still makes less than $170 a month.
(Their Premier's words, not mine. The second highest official of CCP.)
What would their poorer population get if they invade Taiwan? Economic downturn, global sanctions, unemployment rates goes up, coastline cities bombardment (basically majority of their richest cities), invading Taiwan is basically a political destabilizer.
And there's no way in hell the Taiwanese would kowtow to Chinese rule on the island, which means even if the CCP took over Taiwan, they would still have to up more military onto the island and practically the entire population of Taiwan would be their enemy. More military, more money flows towards maintaining the island's stability under CCP rule, poorer the population in China.
What would the Chinese in the PLA think about throwing their lives away for an island that was never a part of them nor have any emotions towards? It's a suicide mission for them with no benefits, only gains the CCP officials more "legitimacy" on ruling China.
On the contrary, Taiwanese's stand would be to protect their home, beating them would not be easy. Saying Taiwanese would be like Afghan isn't a valid nor a logical reasoning. Afghanistan is a civil war with religion and a battle field of connected lands. Invading Taiwan is an amphibious assault with the entire population gearing towards a common enemy.
The free World countries should lend or léase Taiwan 8 dragón type submarines to train, until Taiwan builts their own. Remenber the saying when they came for your friend you didn't helped him, now that they came for you no one will be there to help

If the Philippines opened up Subic Bay again and got Clark AFB going for US force basing, I think the US would be more than happy to help with a great deal of that procurement.
Taiwan is a small and rich island nation with $1 trillion usd in reserve, so all US and its allies can sell all their unwanted weapons by turning the island cat lady to a tiger lady, and train her to eat the US military muscle.
The sub option is secondary the blockade and encirclement of Taiwan into a non shipping zone will trigger a US and Allied Naval response. The key still remains the same for the past decades- achieving air superiority over the Straits and eventually over Taiwan. China has tried numerous times and has failed. The infusion of new missiles, drones, naval ships, etc are currently being countered by Taiwan’s new military purchases. The US Security commitments are the ultimate guarantor of Taiwan’s existence.

One thing that USA can do which is to order diesel submarines from India and give them to Taiwan, if India doesn't want to give subs directly
There are considerably better diesel-electric submarines available in Western Europe, some of them perfectly suited for Taiwan. The Swedes produce very affordable submarines designed for very similar specifications as what Taiwan needs; small and meant for shallow seas without a huge range. The Swedish submarines are some of the best in the world, vastly more superior than those of India, so the US would rather go for that if they would buy them from a third country to then pass on to Taiwan.
Most of us weren't even around at the time of the buildup to WW2. Are we seeing something similar with Chinas aggressiveness?

OK------- The Taiwan Strait is only a hundred miles across. Trying to deploy 8 normal-sized Subs roughly a thousand tons (25 feet in diameter and some 200ft to 300 feet long) with a crew of 30 or 50 is suicide and a HUGE waste of Taiwan's defence money.
----------. What Taiwan needs is to produce A hundred 4 to 6 man Mini Subs that are only a few hundred tons (8 feet in diameter X 100 to 200 feet long) like old WW-2 Torpedo Boats with Stealth inverted triangle cross-section hulls to deflect sonar waves away from the enemy. With a dozen large and twice as many small torpedoes housed in watertight canisters lining the upper side corners of the hull able to quietly swim out of the angled Canister Tubes while the Minisub is sitting on the bottom cruising just above the bottom (using a towed or wired trailing submersible surface Video/Comm/sensor booyes miles from the Mini-Sub) destroying surface ships and passing Subs alike. Using modern Electric Car batteries housed in half of the long hull gives the Mini-Sub a range of well over a couple thousand miles and weeks-long missions. With F-35 like electronics and the best low-cost version Sensors from the big subs, Taiwan could produce a hundred Low-Cost Mini-Subs to Ring the Taiwan Islands and flood the Chines Coast with MiniSub Wolf Packs ready to sink the entire Chinese Invasion fleet as soon as it sails. A hundred such MIni-Subs would turn any attempted Chines Blockade of Taiwan using Chinese missiles into a Blockade of China using cheap torpedoes even if a few MiniSubs were lost. While 8 modern Large 2,000 ton extremely Expensive Subs might sink a few dozen Chinese Invasion Transports before they were hunted down and sunk. You can forget about any attempt to blockade the Mainland as China uses missiles to bring Taiwan to its Knees).
Correct, they need to go for a larger amount of very small submarines of no more than several hundred tonnes. Taiwan doesn't need deep diving long range submarines because as you mentioned the strait of Taiwan is a few hundred kilometre across and on average just 60 meters deep. Plus it would mostly be to target surface ships so they wouldn't need the latest and most powerful sonar either as surface ships are much easier to detect passively than submarines. Taiwan could have about 16 to 20 mini submarines for 2 billion Euro or equivalent in NTD. Perhaps even more for the same amount, considering the wages in Taiwan are a fair bit lower than in Western European countries, which the listed prices are based on.
