    Love this! I noticed that when I switched to using a toothbrush to add patina, it was so much darker compared to using a sponge. Thanks for all the great information and fun video!

    I also had an issue with not-so-dark black patina on pieces. Scrub with Dawn dish soap and baking soda. Dawn removes the grease and baking soda reduces any acidity. Patina soon after the scrub because the metals will oxidize more and more over time and that will interfere with the patina's chemical reaction.

    I also heard that the patina isn’t as bright (dark in this instance) if you don’t wash the flux off very well.

    Love it! And teaching people the “why” is so important! I’m curious if your tap water has very low mineral content. I know that can effect patina in different ways and your black always looks fantastic!

    • @MakenzieHallie
      @MakenzieHallie  2 роки тому +1

      Absolutely. And someone else just said the same thing. But the place i lived before my home, had bad hard water and it was still as black as it is now. So im skeptical of that. Who knows. Lol

    This kit is why I got interested in stained glass. My mother bought it for herself, and asked me to help. It was fine up until the soldering. We did it, and it was bad, but okay for a first attempt with shoddy tools and materials. I found the same kit for half off online, and I bought a 30$ temp controlled soldering iron, 20$ 60/40 solder wire, and 7$ safety flux. All from hobby lobby. Even for an amateur, those 3 things made a world of difference. I was happy to show off the finished result. Since then, I've bought the more appropriate tools and materials. However, I've looked around on the internet, and I'm not finding very many precut kits, and the ones I do find run about 25$. So really, even if you buy this kit for the pattern and precut pieces, it's a reasonable price, and an actually good deal if you find it for cheaper.

    • @MakenzieHallie

      Well, i had bad hard water at the place i lived before my home. And thats where the black patina questions started, was just as black my entire career. So im unsure. If that does somehow affect it after its washed, it must be something else. The dawn dish soap, amount etc. Idk.

    Do you ever polish your black patina?
    I’ve noticed I can get mine pretty dark but as soon as I try to add any kind of polish or wax it all but removes the patina.
    Also. Any tips on patina on lead came?

    • @jednrrp

      I read on a blog to buy a separate wax and polish. Polish, THEN PATINA, then wax. This channel doesn't use polish/wax, but I personally like it too

      New to stained glass and was wondering the same thing. I haven't purchased jump rings yet but want them to match the solder etc when i use patina. I assume from your comment that any metal that can be soldered can be used as long as you tin the whole loop... is this correct? Thanks.

    • @jednrrp
      @jednrrp Рік тому +1

      @@chloebear468 No, there are specific metals you can solder. To be safe, Copper, Tin, Brass, Bronze, and Zinc. It will also attach to Silver plating and Gold plating. But I belive the first 5 will patina. I make my loops from tinned Copper wire and it patinas with my piece. I belive she is using Silver which won't patina but will attach

    • @jednrrp
      @jednrrp Рік тому +1

      @@chloebear468 Sorry, to clarify, you will not be able to tin around just any wire made from any metal, and not all metals that can be soldered, will patina with your piece. I know for sure that Tinned Copped wire / jump rings will patina because that's what I use to make loops 🤍 Hope that came in time to help

    I wonder if the manufacturer of the kit justifies the "cut by hand" statement by having the pieces cut by a person, but using a saw of some type? I'm thing band saw or ring saw. So, technically cut by hand, just not how a stained glass person would interpret that statement.

      Im confused, what did i tell you to watch 7 times? Are you referring to me talking about the dedicated videos on every step of stained glass already on my channel? If so, those are steps in stained glass. Im also assuming you didnt watch the first video reviewing the actual kit. (In that video I go in depth about said kit.) This is not meant to help you fix anything.

    The kit I bought was $30 half off so $15 is well worth the money for a solid pattern and cut glass pieces for someone without a Grinder.
    Clearly someone will need to do research and invest in better consumable materials to do the best job possible. That’s to be expected with nearly every project Michael’s stores sell
    No one there will pickup a beginner macrame, glass etch or stain kit etc and start as a professional.

    • @MakenzieHallie
      @MakenzieHallie  2 роки тому +3

      For sure! If your ok with paying that for cut glass and a moon pattern absolutely. But ultimately that defeats the purpose of the item. I feel extremely disappointed in the scammy feeling aspect of what this was.

    • @Hashdollars
      @Hashdollars 2 роки тому +1

      @@MakenzieHallie it would cost someone a lot more to go get the different colored glass to make the project alone. Without even considering breaking pliers, glass cutter, cutting oil etc it’s clear that’s a very low price for a beginner to start with.
      I understand people use words colloquially but it’s not a scam. It’s a product from Michael’s and the entire store top ti bottom is filled with cheap Chinese products designed in America.
      As far as their products go it’s one of the better ones because anyone with common sense will look online about stained glass before they start.
      Their stained glass kit is literally the only reason I discovered your channel
      The Michael’s review has nearly twice the amount of views as “how much to start stained glass” which is indicative of how many petiole use their stuff to get into certain fields of arts and crafts

    • @Hashdollars

      @@MakenzieHallie I watch the others videos also though and love videos you make .

    • @MakenzieHallie
      @MakenzieHallie  2 роки тому

      It absolutely would cost someone alot more. Thats why stained glass kits like this shouldnt be a thing. Leaving the time, knowledge and practice it takes completely out of it. But that doesnt make it ok to sell a product with an end result advertised, that isnt achievable. The other products in michaels feels irrelevant to me. People dont know that i feel, otherwise they wouldnt keep buying the shit and expecting anything good. The messages, comments and emails were all of people that were expecting to just make a moon. Thats all. Understandably. If they want to sell just the pre cut glass and patterns like many places do already, absolutely. Im not ok with this kit at all. I cant be. 😂. But i am glad if its how you found my channel! Hopefully they find it SOMEHOW too. Lol.
