Definitely still very much top of the game! Been playing my BLX since 1992 to date and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. Love the distinct recognizable sound, clean yet warm, very powerfull, very punchy and with great projection! My other kits (Pearl Custom Z and Pearl MMX masters) don't even come close to the BLX performance. Personal point of view though.
I toured with a charcoal grey sparkle pearl 5 piece for a while.. micd up they were thick sound and dependable every night. Hardware really held up too. I currently play Gretsch maple and ludwig '67 3 piece.
I truly miss mine. In 1990 I took a check for $5700 to Memphis Drum Shop ( I was sure I would be a millionaire soon ). Sheer Blue with the Black Rack and Paiste Signature series. It was absolutely the finest I have ever owned.
nice. did you go down and pick em up? I luv the Memphis Drum shop videos on here.. im sure you've seen a few of them demoing the latest kits, they do a nice production.
The red drums in my avatar are BLX drums in Sequoia Red, same sizes as yours plus an 8" tom. Played one show with them and they were phenomenal. Miss those. Also have had 2 large BLX kits in Sheer Blue like yours. Hard to find without discoloration of the finish.
I had a sequoia red kit but it was beat up. I refinished it to natural. Massive undertaking due to not only the layers of laquer to remove, but the red was actually a dye that was deep into the top veneer. I had to manually scrape, then tons of sanding. They look better now than any kit I've ever seen.
Cool you got an 18 :) I've got a 8, 10, 12, 13, 16 18 and 24 bass as well. There is an elusive 20 X 16 floor tom, a 14x12 rack, and a 15x13 rack out there somewhere with my name on it. They are so rare and hard to find!
Thanx David! if you're in Michigan area hit me up, haha. I luv tuning. You guys talking about bigger diameter toms & kicks reminds me of those metal shells made by Masshoff. If you haven't seen/heard those yet check em out, theyre crazy. I've only heard samples and played sample libraries, never played them in real life, but looks like a treat.
Thanks Nate! I was leaning in that direction, and had one on hand for 13" rack tom. I bought new pinstripes for the rest of the toms last week and put them on Friday to provide to music festival my friend organized. Cheers,
@@thezogs95 It's pretty natural, It's not lathered up too much. I brought down the mids a bit on the toms & cymbals and there is final compression for broadcast. I use a CAD cardioid cond. for room mic that pulls in fullness and mid tone.
I have the exact same set, with an extra 13” Tom, but mine don’t sound nearly that good. Perhaps it’s cuz the the heads are as old as the drums lol. Bout 30 yrs old 😂
BLXs all have either 10x08 or 10x10, 12x10, 13x11, 14x12, 15x14, 16x14, 16x16, 18x16. Kicks are 20 and 22. Not sure there were 18s made in series, or just custom order.

They sound nice and huge. What are the depth sizes of the drums?
Your drums especially all the toms sound phenomenal to me, deep rumble tuning fantastic, what heads were you using, thanks for sharing.
I have 8, 10, 12, 13 with 16 and 18 floor... I'd love to have you tune my kit, your's is amazing!

Thanx Reinaldo. Tuning & Micing drums is an obsession of mine, heh.
@@natefromdetroit that drum model is a one of my favourites drums.
I just bought a set of these in that blue finish for $600. They sound like Godzilla coming down the street.
Sounds great, nice and full.
What head combinations are you running?
THank you. Remo Pinstripe tops, Remo Ambassador clear on the bottom

@@natefromdetroit i love your sound... good Job !

Kit sounds great tho
I've got a set 10 12 13 16 22 & 14FFS.
nice, thats a good line up
@natefromdetroit Thanks, the colour is very appropriate for the time of year- Arctic White!
Fucking hell!😮
Nessa fase a marca fabricava boas baterias na minha opinião. Eram kits com ressonância, os de hoje soam mortos.
You can’t call them power toms without providing the depth.
