Having hip pain at night or while sleeping can cause major disruptions in your life. This is especially true if you are a side sleeper. Hip pain when sleeping on your side, either whether it is one side or both sides, often puts additional strain or pressure on your hips - exacerbating preexisting pain. There are a lot of muscles attach on the greater trochanter and the insertion of these muscles get really inflamed and becomes chronic into Gluteal tendinopathy.
For many side sleepers, having hip pain when sleeping on either side is especially annoying because it becomes more difficult to find a comfortable position to fall asleep. As hip pain progresses, it can even develop into a general pain at night no matter what sleeping position you are in!
The best way to approach hip and leg pain when sleeping on your side is to first understand the root cause of that pain.
I will cover some of the most common causes of hip pain when sleeping, but that will not be the main focus. This video covers ways that you can reduce your pain and manage symptoms so that you can get a better night’s sleep and wake up feeling rested.
What causes hip pain when sleeping on your side?
There are several causes of hip pain when sleeping on your side.
No one person is exactly the same and neither is their hip anatomy. The shape of the hip sockets is different from person to person, some people may experience hypermobility issues, and it is also possible that your hip pain is residual from a past or current injury.
Chronic hip pain is something that is often associated with arthritis, bursitis, and osteoarthritis as well. That being said, one of the most common, yet easiest to overlook, causes of hip pain at night is having weak glutes medius and minimus..
The stress on your hips does not stop when you lay down to sleep either. Especially for side sleepers.
You see, when you are lying on your side, your legs are usually stacked on top of each other - sometimes connecting at the knees and ankles. Depending on your mattress, the bottom hip may not experience much strain, but the top hip does.
Since the top hip and the rest of your leg are not on the same level, your knee pulls the hip slightly down and the hip feels a strain. If you sleep on your side, you may not notice any discomfort or irritation at first. It may take some time - even years - for your muscles to become affected by that pull from your knees.
Most side sleepers also tend to curl their knees slightly towards their chest, compounding the tight iliopsoas issue. Despite being in a resting position, your iliopsoas muscles are fully engaged when you’re drawing your thighs and knees slightly up.
All this just goes to say that, although there are many other possible reasons for hip pain when sleeping on your side, don’t overlook something as seemingly simple as tight muscles.

Ugh! I have been having terrible hip pain on the left and never thought it could be from sleeping on my side. I have been traveling and now realize how important a good mattress is. I have had an awesome Tempurpedic foam mattress for years, in case you wanted to know, and hardly had hip pain. Will do these and share. Thanks!

I just subscribed! I have the exact pain you've described. My hip joint is sore and painful. If I sit too long or lift up to stand from a very low setting, it makes my pain worse after a couple of days. Sometimes, when I get out of bed, I'm bent over from the hip pain. This video is excellent, and I'm looking forward to more.
Have you seen an ortho doctor I had the same symptoms and I have bursitis and just got a PRP shot praying it heals my bursa

Alas I fell in work in February on my left side, hurt my hip and has caused problems. Saw physio and progressed well and managed to sleep without hip pain. In June I went walking uphill, steeply for 35 minutes and had to stop as I it was very painful in centre of my hip and pain again when sleeping. I arranged for another appointment with physios in July but the week before that I fell on the last couple stairs at home and fractured my fibula. Ended up having that fixated 2 weeks later and had 2 months of my leg elevated above my heart. Since starting walking that pain has come back. My left glute wasn't engaging. Things have improved but have pain on the side. Though I have exercises with the physio for my ankle and hip, I think I will try this!🎉

Put a small pillow between your knees when you sleep and it stops the pull on the hip on top. Been doin this for 15 yrs and I am 71. Easy peasy 🕊

This video is impressive. Would you please address sit-bone pain. Perhaps piriformus? My right sit bone not only hurts to sit, it hurts when I lay flat on my back. Thank you.
For me it's my left sit-bone but not when I lay flat on my back. It's taken a while for me to understand how to do glute exercises as well as external rotator ones (ie piriformis plus others) without actually making things worse. I'm definitely going to try these as in addition.
Whatever you do, start gently. The exercise program I've devised for myself has helped me and I'm able to sit for longer without excruciating pain. You may need to add a few gentle stretches too. And think about your hamstrings which also connect to your sit-bones.
Can you do a video for one whole side of my body hurts. Im a left side dominant and i always feel that its so tight. Also my left side hips is so low.
I have high shoulders on my left and low hips on my left too. My body is so assymetrical please help me.

I am having issues with walking and then started having hip pain. Do you think the hip pain is causing my walking issues? I am a side sleeper and do wake up in pain during the night. Thank you for your videos!
Hi Anne, I have done daily yoga for almost 3 years now and I teach dance a couple times a week and dance with students on the weekend. I have hip bursitis right now after riding in a car 9 hours in one day to help my sister move. Are all of these clam shells (even the advanced ones) ok for bursitis?. As I have it in both hips. I am heating before and icing after exercise or in today's case, and teaching dance from 5:30 to 10:30 this evening. I have researched bursitis and rest is important along with stremgthening, but I cant cancel my Monday classes. I have limited my other work on my two acres in between and have been doing bursitis exercises but these arent among them.
These were what I did when my si joint slipped out ( I am somewhat hypermobile). Should I wait on these till my bursitis is better then add these in after my daily yoga? Thanks!😊

I have outer left hip pain that extends to my left glutes from running. I presume it’s from increasing my miles too fast
w/o progressively increasing. My lower back & outer knees began to hurt a bit, too. My back & hips hurt more when I’m waking up & getting off my bed. Once I start moving, it’s not so bad. The hip pain has been around since the Friday after Thanksgiving. I’ve never had this happen before, but as I’m getting older my body is feeling more aches. 😬😒🙃 I have a half marathon in a couple of weeks that I plan to push through & hoping the pain won’t be so bad. It appears these exercises will help. Do you have more exercises to improve my condition?

I got hip and buttock pain i recently got my pelvis adjusted because one side was slightly lower all from bending over and tying my shoes . Is hot or cold better for this issue?

Wow! Does it come gradually? I just woke up one morning with my left hip hurting inside . I thought I’d time traveled and been in battle! Very weird & now in day 3 it’s gotten so bad I can hardly walk and when I do I’m bent over forward cause it hurts to walk or move !!!! Crazy! I’m too young to feel this old! Gonna start my yoga again as I’ve been too sedentary ! Does it sneak up in you like that - just instantly ? Or overnight ? 😩
