- The lovely people of Ryobi UK send me some tools for Christmas and one of them being a soldering iron. I had never used one before so why not start the new year learning a new craft :D
If you have followed my channel for a while you know I love my Ryobi one+ tools, they are so easy to work with as they all require the same batteries. Perfect for working in my no power workshop, or lets just call it an off grid workshop :)
I wanted to try out the soldering iron by making a necklace out of beach finds, pretty stones, sea glass or even some washed up pottery. Do you like the end result?
As you can see polishing the stones didn't work out so well but the rotary tool is an amazing machine to use, maybe I will engrave some of the stones with it. I used one previously in this tutorial making a patterned rolling pin www.hestershandmadehome.com/he...
Did I use the wrong compound on the felt pad? Let me know in the comments below.
I'll def keep my eye out for more beach finds on my beach walks as love hoe these hangers turned out!
The solder iron was super easy to use and the pebble hangers were made within an hour.
I used:
The Ryobi One+ solder iron
My beach finds
Solder, you can use one with a resin core or a normal solder
Flux with a cotton bud to apply it with
Sticky back copper tape
Two clothes pegs
Pliers
And necklace chain, clasps and jump rings
and a heatproof surface, I used an old tile

This video is so fantastic! I have been searching for a straight forward video for so long. Thank you for making this so easy to understand and your pieces are beautiful! ❤
Thank you! So pleases you like the tutorial :D
Excellent video!
Thank you very much!
Thank you Hester! this is so lovely as usual.
Thank you so much!
Loved them. Thank you so much💜
You are so welcome!
You made this look so easy ❤
Thanks, it was easy :) and so much fun!
Please do more videos on soldering?
Will do!!
Love your video!! Can you explain what you would need to get a gold instead of silver?
Hi, as far as I know solder is always silver in colour but I recon you could paint the edges with a gold paint?
Yes you should always wear a mask when soldering, because the smoke is dangerous and can cause respiratory problems. Thank you for your video very inspiring. 😊
Indeed, fair comment. I didn't solder for long and I was sitting outside but masks are always a safer option
Very good ✌️ ✌️ ✌️ 👌 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks for a great video! I have a question. When you melted the copper tape to the glass, the copper color looked like it turned to a silver color. When I look on Amazon, all I see in the after photos are pieces with copper color on them. Where can I get tape that will remain silver colored? Thank you!
Hi, you use the copper tape so the solder has something to stick too. So the silver colour you see is the solder going on the copper tape. Hope this makes sense? thanks!
Hello, Loved your video. I am also very curious about the solder you used. Could you please tell us where did you ordered your solder from? I recently purchased some silver tone led-free solder on Ebay. It melts but does not want to stick to fluxed copper tape at all! The one you used flows onto the tape beautifully. I would appreciate of you shared the source with us. Thank You
Hi, Its the solder that came with my Ryobi soldering iron, it worked great. I've used other lead free solder too from my local hardware store that worked fine if you add a bit of flux. Hope this helps
Hello! This video is awesome and so helpful. For the solder, did you use sterling silver or a different kind of metal “wire” ? I’ve read that a solder iron will not properly melt sterling silver because it doesn’t get hot enough, I am just curious if that is true !
Hi Caroline. I just use normal lead free solder, hope this helps
Thank you !!
Lovely e it is that little girl she is beautiful
Thanks!
Where do you get the copper tape? I really don’t like to buy things on Amazon. I always get something wrong.
Hi, you can pick it up in any good DIY store
Does anyone have any copper tape to recommend? The choice is overwhelming and I’m worried a lot don’t work 😅
Amazon has tons to choose from even a size variety pack
Hi, I buy my copper tape in my local DIY shop. You can always ask the staff in you local shop for advice, i recon they are happy to advice on their different tapes
Is it possible to do this with gold, too?
Hi, you could but then you need a proper flame soldering thing (don't know what its called!) :)
@@handmadehome Is it a welder I think?!
Ciao è filo in stagno quello che usi?possibile sapere come si chiama L adesivo color rame che utilizzi è il liquido per far aderire lo stagno grazie
Hi, you put the copper tape around your stone then put a little bit of flux on the tape before soldering. The solder is the tin wire you were talking about. Hope this helps :)
Why can't you solder straight on to flux and glass, why do you need the tape
Hi, the solder wont stick to the glass hence the copper tape
Hiya I was just wondering how the copper foil and solder stays on the seaglass??? Is it just very sticky? Am I missing something? 😂😅😩
Hi Esme, the copper tape just wraps around the glass and stays in place :)
@@handmadehome ahh thank you so much! I see x
