The most iconic Tani Avartanam Duet -Palghat Mani Iyer Mridangam & Pazhani Subramania Pillai Kanjira

This one of a kind duet took place at Shanmukhananda Fine Arts 1957 for Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar and this happens to be the only recording of these legends playing together.

The duel between Pazhani Subramania Pillai and Palghat Mani Iyer should have been with both playing mridangam. I'm missing the sweet resonance of Pazhani's mridangam and the wide repertoir of his mridangam syllables akin to his Pudukkottai school.

This Thani is from the Shanmugananda concert that took place across 2 days with ARI, TNK, Mani Iyer and Palani and this from the first day Thani after Enthaninne . There’s a beautiful execution of Mishra Korapu by the two of them if my memory serves me right.

This duet between maniiyer and pazhani is for the concert of ariyakudi. This concert took place at gemini ss vasan daughters wedding inthe year 1952 august.

SS Vasan's wedding was also in the same year. According to Palghat Mani Iyers son, TR Rajamani.. Ariyakudi sang a pallavi in Shankarabharanam set to Dhruva Talam that day so this is the Shanmukhananda concert only. Yes, the photo is from the wedding, but recording isn't.

Those days hard core music enthusiasts would be seated on stage to listen to concerts from close quarters! There was an air of informality during those times. Stage artistes were not treated as a special species!😊
