The Mad Genius Behind Sea Monkeys

  • This is the story of how a tiny, magical creature was transformed into a cultural phenomenon by inventor, marketing genius and complicated eccentric Harold von Braunhut. Full of fun facts (both charming and disturbing), Just Add Water is a colorful short film about a half-century of marketing directly to children, the force of nostalgia in pop culture, and an unlikely meeting of flim-flam and hard science. A film by Penny Lane.
This Great Big Film was made in collaboration with our friends at CNN Films.

@Colin Feezell A possible Nihilist! This guy was certainly very creative, but he was also probably very deep in self-loathing, hopelessness, and a desire to feel companionship, all of us have that. and, as you know, the combination of these feelings spiralled into giving millions to a Third-Reich wannabe group. Sad.

I’m almost 25 and have had sea monkeys since I was 19, I’ve never replaced the eggs, rarely buy the treats and rarely change the water fully.
I genuinely think they’re amazing, you can see when the females are pregnant, the babies are cute.
I’ve had multiple tanks so can vouch that a good 40% of the eggs don’t work - i always buy a few of the egg sachets for one hatching.

Contemplate that ~ we think we are doing life, good choices, bad choices, etc. and then find out down the road that we were actually someone else's dream. Yea, so all this shit doesn't matter, does it?

My sea monkeys did well. They even mated & had new generations of offspring. You would see a little, dark, egg mass toward the tail end before they were released. 😊✌

Also, if you freeze-frame the patent text, you'll see that there's a dechlorinator in packet 1 as well. And at least in the original iteration of the product, there were eggs in the second packet too, to ensure "mommy & daddy" sea monkeys _and_ "the kids". But if you were missing out on the dechlorinators and other water-conditioners from packet 1, yeah, perhaps your packet 2 aquasimians were doomed.

I learnt very quickly what they were and I thought it would be really cool to supply a live diet to the fish. The guppies loved it, they were so healthy and thrived. So, once I had a fish tank in the back of my classroom. We studied brine shrimp once in the nearby biology classes. I didn't feel like feeding fish so eventually I started buying brine shrimp and learning how to hatch them. DIRT cheap! So, I had some, left them, forgot about them. Put them in the bottom of a plant I was growing in just water. Ignored them for about 6months. Maybe even a year.
I came back LONG after any reasonable amount of time to a plant that I had kept watering. Sure it had brine shrimp for a while, but I didn't expect any microbes. One day I see movement in among the roots of the plant. Upon checking it out, I found I had a MASSIVE brine shrimp about the size of a quarter. It had gossamer wings and was a tiny angel living in my plant jar. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Lasted almost another year. I would just go back and watch for it and it would glide around with these massive wings. STUNNING how large and beautiful it became.

I just bought my 8yro a sea monkey kit. Living in an apartment complex that charges out the butt for pets, they were the best choice for her first pet. They're easy and cheap. I was very open with her about what they actually are, and how long they usually last. Bless her heart, she doesnt care. I think that's the while point. Kids will still love something no matter what.

I really wanted these when I was a kid but my parents would refuse to buy them for me because they assumed I thought that they were like the stupid illustrations, but I'd learned something cool about them, that they always swim upside down with their bellies towards the light so if you put them in a dark tank and shine the light from below they would go upside down or to one side they would align and swim in a vertical plane or a horizontal or whatever, so I managed to get some for my science fair project, they were fun :D

When older and wiser I was better at aquariums I got them again (to raise as fish food) but rather than using the provided "water conditioner" I used my own chlorine remover and aquarium salt because I was raising them in a bigger tank. They never got born! I thought they must have gotten too cold (I was living way up in Canada at the time and they may have gotten zapped with -40 degree weather and I was disappointed but didn't stress over it that bad. Way later I learned that the "eggs" aren't eggs ad the eggs are in the water conditioner (which I had chucked) D'oh! XD

    I personally don’t think it’s that complicated.
There are many historical “heroes” we look up to because of the great things they did; Christopher Columbus discovered new land, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, and so on.
What some people don’t know is that Christopher Columbus discovered land that was already occupied by others who had lived there for generations, yet he gave them a new name and raped them. Thomas Jefferson was one of the largest slaveowners of his time and was also a pedophile. Just because these people did something good or what would greatly influence the world we live in today, that doesn’t mean they were perfect or even good people.
The inventor of the Sea Monkeys is no different from these “heroes”. This just shows that we don’t live in a black-and-white world and no human is your version of perfect. All of the glorified historical figures did what they believed was right, whether the majority of people believed so or not. This is just the balance of life, to do good and bad. But also, this shows how society is unaware of and even undermines the evil parts of the people we want to believe are worthy of looking up to.

This kinda starts going off the rails at 10:50 Last we heard was that Sea Monkeys didn't actually live very long, were small and needed to be genetically engineered to be more like they were advertised. But from that point on next few minutes are spent focusing on Harold's darker side, with final mention of Sea Monkeys being that watch thing.
So what happened? Did they succeeded in engineering larger, longer-lasting Sea Monkeys? Did they fail? Come on, I appreciate knowledge about the man himself too, but you can't just leave this gap in the Sea Monkey story!
