I remember during the 2018 Tour, Paul Sherwen announcing that Peter Sagan was wearing the green jersey for the 100th time and that was an absolute record for most days in any leaders jersey in any of the grand tours. They can try to "Sagan proof" the points competition but it will never work.
I like the polka dot jersey as well, but it's bad karma to wear that and get passed going up a big hill. :) Turns your daily cruise on the bike into an all-out war - LOL
Maglia Nera? The Maglia Nera was a black jersey awarded as a symbolic prize in cycling competition at the Giro d'Italia, given to the last man to finish the race. It was allocated between 1946 and 1951, and last awarded to Giovanni Pinarello
I love you GCN but, come on, I think you're deliberately asking presenters to mispronounce Italian words on purpose. This time it's "maglia". The 'g' should be silent just like it is in tagliatelle. In a recent clip it was "strade bianche" where the 'che' sound should be hard like a 'k'. Sorry for the pedantry, it's the Italian teacher in me.
@@gcn the Giro used to have a Maglia Nera for the lantern rouge, which was highly sought after. However, the organisers were never keen on it, in part because it led to ridiculous scenes where riders would try to "win" it by stopping, hiding, etc. The "best" was Luigi Malabrocca who took slow riding to extremes in order to finish last. I seem to recall a rider being DQ'd quite recently for slowing down to wait for his rival for last place which was deemed as "not competing" by the Commissaires.
@@jens5905 yeah, back in the days, there was the "maglia nera" (black jersey) for the last in the GC, because there was a prize for that, with some sort of "hide and seek battles" between the contenders to remain the last but not being excluded of the Giro

@@heliumtrophy I guess they want to avoid competition for that price. It would look pretty silly if you had a track stand competition on the finish line.

Despite what the "rules" say about wearing replica versions of these jerseys, I say screw that. My favorite jersey is a replica of the 1989 Green Jersey. Sean Kelly's record 4th
I'm with you on that one, although I did get some raised eyebrows from a group of other cyclists when I was riding in Spain on a organized bike trip in my 2017 Green Vuelta sprinter's jersey :) Someone even asked the tour leader (in Spanish) if I was Matteo Trentin's father - LOL - I was hoping for older brother :( He was wearing it at the time, though Froome took it at the end of the race.
I like it when teams show proper respect to their riders who are national champions. The best examples are Bernard Hinault, Marc and Yvon Madiot and Arnaud Démare sporting the ZERO sponsor logos.
All cool jerseys. But what about the jerseys that are already long gone. F.e. the Red Jersey for the leader in the intermediate sprint classification, or the Patched Jersey, for the leader of the combination classification. A classification in the TdF where you would get points for the positions in the GC, KOM, Inters and Sprint classifications. Let's say a rider was 3rd in GC, 6th in KOM, 1st in Inters and 5th in Sprint, this would tally up to 15 points for the combined class. The rider with the least amount was expected to ride in the Patched Jersey, with Patches of yellow, polka dot, green and red jerseys. This made it: The most hideous jersey in all of cycling...
Strictly the Green is the Points Jersey, not the 'Sprinters' Jersey. Worn by the person crossing an intermediate point or the Finish line first in most non-mountain stages. Just so happens that much of the time it ends up being contested by Sprinters, until Sagan highlighted requirement to be a Sprinter+ to win it more recently.
That's not where the polka dot jersey came from. You can't find a picture of that chocolate bar wrapper anywhere because it doesn't exist. This article sheds a bit more light www.cyclinglegends.co.uk/index.php/races/climbers-jersey
How come the current world champion can't wear the rainbow jersey in that years world championship race? They technically are the world champion until that race is over.
Sorry, but IMHO there is nothing worse than seeing one of the worlds Iconic jerseys being worn by a wannabe on a bike, as opposed to being worn by a cyclist who won the right to wear it, it is the same as driving a Ferrari kit car, all a bit sad and fooling no one.
Yes, absolutely unacceptable! How dare she make a video with such terrible acoustics, doesn't she know your delicate ears may be bothered by that unprofessional sound? can't enjoy a free video like that!!!
Please would people stop calling the Green jersey (or equivalent) the "Sprints" jersey. It's the POINTS jersey. It is not, as Mark Cavendish was prone to moan on and on about, a jersey specifically for the sprinters! Most years it happens to go to a sprinter, because of the configuration of the stages, but that's not guaranteed. Many non sprinters have won it due to their consistency over the whole race, which is what it was intended to reward.
This is something I've never liked or understood. There is already a jersey for the most consistent and best all-round rider - the yellow/pink/red one!!! I personally think that the green/blue jersey SHOULD be for the sprinters. People going after the KOM jersey don't have to finish high up on a flat stage, so why don't sprint specialists get rewarded by having a jersey of their own, where they aren't penalised for being pure sprinters and finishing low down on mountain stages?
@@phillarrowsmith3195 How would that work? No stage is guaranteed to be a sprint. What if a break stayed away, would they get points for it? And define sprint? How many riders are needed for it to count as a sprint? The points jersey rewards consistency and, as the video says, was brought in to counteract Coppi taking such a huge time lead, nobody else had anything to aim for. It does favour the sprinters, with higher points on flat stages. The race leaders jersey doesn't necessarily reward consistency. One big time gap and it can be yours, if you can hang on. Besides, who wants to watch the big sprinters teams killing the race every day. Yawn!
@@ronanfox4389 But the "If they can hang on..." bit is exactly what consistency is! In order to 'hang on' to any gained lead, they have to be consistent. This is what defines great GC riders from talented stage winners. I'm not saying there definitely shouldn't be a prize for the most consistent finisher - any system that rewards a talent like Peter Sagan has got to be doing something right - but that there should be a specific one for sprinters. How would it work? Any stage designated as a mountain stage would not have 'sprinters' points at the end. Instead, if there was a flat start to the stage, there would be an intermediate sprint and that's it, but with this intermediate sprint being worth more points than at present. Any stage designated beforehand as a flat stage would have maximum 'sprinters' points at the end. Those that are more rolling in nature would have a smaller amount available at the end. All would have intermediate sprints at some point to add to the tally. This makes it more like the current KOM contest. That award does not include any points at the end of flat stages, just a small amount on any lumpy bits in the middle, i.e. a mountain version of an intermediate sprint. If a breakaway goes, it goes and they get the points, just like they do in all contests at the moment. In my opinion, doing it this way would ensure that every day would be more likely to have a combination of break aways, sprints and KOM races going on, all in addition to the GC, as well as ensuring there is an actual prize for the rider that is the best of all the sprinters whilst still being enough of an all rounder to make it to the end.
This video was excellent and gave me a good idea for another video. There are probably a number of us who enjoy riding but have no real understanding of how cycling competitions work.
