My favorite thing of this film is when Wolverine is introduced in the First X-Men movie it was about helping a girl get to a better place (Rogue) and his end is about helping a girl get to a better place (X23)
I now feel ashamed that I also never noticed that. Also, the first journey went north to south and the final one went south to north, kind of in a loose return journey to type of thing.
Logan: "Don't be what they made you..." *Everyone chokes up and let tears flow* X-23: "Daddy....no....daddy" *Everyone loses it, is an emotional wreck* X-23 makes the cross into an X *Everyone gives it a standing ovation*
Patrick Stewart's performance hits so much harder if you've had a relative in that condition. My grandmother had Alzheimer's and Xavier's behavior reminded me so much of her, every scene with him was gut wrenching. And Hugh Jackman really captures how taking care of someone with dementia can affect the caregiver. You can just feel how emotionally draining and wearying that experience is. Dafne Keen was amazing too. That "daddy" line, holy crap. It's especially poignant when you realize that could be the first time she's said that word since she was raised in a lab and treated like an object all her life.
Seth Koehler the movie was great. she wasn't. the only reason we liked her is because she had very few lines. if she had a bunch of lines, just like every kid actor in movies, she would've been annoying.
I only teared up a little bit when I saw it the first time opening night, but the second time I saw it, the thought came to mind that the professor is pretty much the closet thing Logan has to a father, so when it came to the scene where he's got the shovel....I literally broke down balling...I was thinking" this poor bastard has been through hell, but he's been tough because he's wolverine..but this moment....this broke him" ...F#@$ing beautiful!!!!!..... I've been waiting for a wolverine film like this since I bought that first wolverine comic in a gas station in third grade.....20th Century Fox WELL DONE!!!!!!!
Yep... That he couldn't even give him a eulogy and was struggling to say that he got him as close to water as he could, that broke me... Gave me a flashback to my grandfathers funeral when I was a kid...
I definitely find Logan to be better than The Dark Knight. TDK is like a cool, slick cop drama with a very interesting performance from the main villain, but to me it always felt like it lacked an ability to make me invested in the main character. He was just kind of there to pull the story along. In Logan I fucking care about everybody.
You know what, I'm glad someone feels the same way cause I'm kind of always in the minority. Like saying I loved the new Dark Phoenix when everyone else seems to hate it...
They legit say 7 died in Westchester. prof X killed the Xmen. They took it straight from Old man Logan (xcept it isnt wolverine who kills the Xmen but prof Xavier). Its as good as stated.
I was soooo glad they did not flash back to it. I put 2 and 2 together on my own, I don't need to see my favorite characters heads explode Scanner-style.
Thierry Blondin-Rivest yeah. everytime I hear people speculating it makes me 2nd guess that I heard the news reporter say it but now youve mentioned it I know I did hear it right.
Can't believe the only Oscar nod for Logan is best adapted screenplay. Did anyone see this fucking movie? Amazing from start to finish. When he tell professor x that "it wasn't me" ... heartbreaking.
Logan may be a better move in the sense that it's more compelling, but when I think of which blew my mind more it was the Dark Knight - not so much because of the journey, but because of certain images that to me became instantly iconic and imprinted on my mind - like Joker riding in the back of the stolen cop car as the sound fades, batman smashing through the roof of Scarecrow's car, the Joker threatening Racheal with the knife, the truck flipping. The soundtrack also I can still hear in my mind. The Dark Knight kind of reminds me of 2001 or ClockWork Orange in that way, these movies plots are great, but they are classics because of those iconic images that stay with you for years and continue to inspire you.
FINALLY saw LOGAN last night. Truly astounding. BRILLIANT. Dafne Keen was amazing. Patrick Stewart was absolutely Oscar-worthy. Jackman delivered perfectly and the story was mesmerizing. WOW!
I saw Logan 3 times in the theater. It's So Amazing it's Staggering!!! They're absolutely right--The Dark Knight and Logan are Thee 2 Greatest superhero movies of ALL Time!! No other superhero movies come close--they truly are in a league of their own. I've never cared more for the characters in a superhero movie than I did at the end of Logan. It's simply... AMAZING!!!
Great to revisit after Deadpool VS Wolverine... And Kevin was (happily) wrong, they didn't revisit Wolverine in 7 years. And it was Hugh who came back. He's gonna do Wolverine until he's 90 if Deadpool is right :D And Kevin was right about Logan being the new bar. Sadly, nothing has been Logan good since. At least not on cinema. Some TV series were close... Punisher, Loki, Wandavision... IMO the closest was Moon Knight, but it was NOT a universally loved show... And there is nothing on the horizon that has the potential to be Logan good... Nothing. Marvel is struggling, to the point that they brought back the Russos and RDJ, in a totally unimaginative move. They're bringing back Daredevil. Adding a Red Hulk. But the darkest most powerful emotional gut punch that is Logan won't be dethroned for a while... It's not a perfect movie, the villains absolutely suck, especially Boyd Holbrook's character, and of course the Wolverine clone, but the main cast is so fucking good, with Jackman, Keen and Stewart, that we forgive. So many memorable scenes, and the best comic book character death on cinema.
I've heard some people dig at the fact that we got X-24 instead of Sabretooth, but we've seen Sabretooth. Twice. What we never got to see until Logan was what the Weapon X program was trying to create. X-24 is what Stryker wanted Logan to become.
I place Logan over TDK. Everytime I see TDK I think of Pete Holmes "Badman" and how the Joker played him for a fool and had him beat if not for Lucious Fox's add ons to the suit as well as his desire to not kill him...still a good movie though
They did put the part about Charles killing the X-men in the movie, or the hinted at it. It was a news report they were watching. The reporter says, likening what happened in Las Vegas to Connecticut, that however many years ago that attack killed several members of the... and Logan turns it off. Then Charles' speech before the clone kills him is about how he remembers some of it and he understands why Logan hates him not. It was implied so hard that it can be taken as canon.
When they talked about the Westchester incident and how many were killed (in the newscast) I just assumed that was when the X-Men were killed, especially when Xavier said that he remembered.
Michael Keaton coming back for The Dark Knight Returns makes so much sense it almost makes me tear up. Batman Begins has been my favorite superhero film since it came out. Logan my very well edge if out.
They mentioned it in the movie over the radio when they report on the Las Vegas incident, "similar to the incident in Westchester, where hundreds were injured and over 60 died, including several members of the X...." (Logan turns off the radio)
My only beef was how professionally edited Gabriela's "concealed" cell phone footage was, dubbed narration and all...maybe iPhones are THAT advanced after the mutant era?
Off the top of my head people I could see playing Wolverine are Joe Manganello, Jake Gyllenhaal Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jon, Berrenthal,Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, Charlie Hunnam (Would be near the bottom of the list) and Jon Krasinkski.
The original X-Men movie came out in 2000, 18 years ago. If you were 14 when you saw that you are 32 now, the studios should understand that the people who grew up watching these characters (and the comic book fans as well of course) are old enough that an adult story appeals to them. Logan was perfect. I saw it in theaters twice and I've seen it a few times more after that. So good that just rewatching a trailer for it will get me close to tears because I remember the emotion from watching it.
15:30 - They hint on the radio after they left Vegas that Charles killed the X-Men. It is what charles is talking about before weapon 24 does his thing. The director confirms that is the case. He even filmed it, but took it out as it would have taken away from Logan's story.
About Xavier killing those X-Men, it IS in the movie. After Oklahoma incident, In background radio in the car we can hear "similar to Westchester incident year ago, where hundreds were paralized and 7 X-Men died" Xavier killed his children.
my only issue and it wasn't a huge thing was I would've preferred a different mutant than wolverine clone. I thought it was a little boring. besides that fucking greatest thing ever bring on the X-23 sequels
They mentioned in one of the newscasts after the Casino hotel scene that the New York incident killed 7 mutants. Xavier may not have killed his school but the implication seemed to be that he did wipe out most of the X-Men.
Dougray Scott got hurt on MI2 and the movie have to film longer than scheduled which led to him not being able to film on Xmen, so with 3 weeks of already shorting they cast Jackman.
The answer about Dougray Scott was neither scheduling NOR a bad screen test. He injured himself on M:I2, and couldn't do it because his arm was in a cast. Hard to do claws in the forearms that way. Also, where WAS a concern about the height of Hugh Jackman, but the original issue was that he was Australian, and the ghost of "Pryde of the X-Men" was still out there.
As a fan of Wolverine since 1988 (high school - when I really started reading comics), I loved what Hugh Jackman did as the character and Logan was an amazing send off for his version of Wolverine. As you two have said, they will make more X-Men and Wolverine movies, but his 17 year run was truly wonderful.
Here's my thought on Logan, they could've taken the whole 'superhero' elements with the powers and made it a story of this tough, loner guy, taking care of an old man that was like a father to him but he could never really show it, and discovering he has a daughter...and it would still be an amazing movie. It was just this amazing movie that happened to have Wolverine and X-men powers but the plot just blew it away and I can't wait to see it a second time.
Hue has the comic movie character personification championship belt. Who are the other contenders? Robert Downey - Iron Man Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool Heath Ledger - Joker Wesley Snipes - Blade Michael Jai White - Spawn Margot Robbie - Harley Quinn Tom Hiddleson - Loki Chris Hemsworth - Thor
Good review, but as a fellow comic book geek, when you brought up the inevitable reboot of Wolverine, I'm surprised you don't bring up the possibility that X-23 becomes the new Wolverine. I would love that, as Dafne Keen was awesome in Logan and I would love to see her put on the yellow spandex, as the character does in the comics.
Dafne Keen, Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman all had borderline nomination performances. Whether they get the nomination or not will probably depend on what their competition ends up being. If this year doesn't provide a ton of great acting performances, I can definitely see 1 or 2 of these guys getting a nod. I hope. Movie was badass and needs recognition.
Patrick Stewart was at the TOP of his game in this film. These people were real ... the story was real ... the entire package here was real, THAT is what made it so badass!!!
Logan was an excellent ending to Hugh Jackman playing the character. For me it's probably the most memorable superhero film since The Dark Knight and is definitely a wildcard when compared to other X-men films. Hopefully the studios now understand whether the film is rated R or PG-13 we'll go see it as long as it's a great story.
I'm the movie they say on the radio "Killing a hundred people and many of the X-" and then it cuts off. Basically saying that Charles killed all the X men .
In the beginning, those vatos are trying to steel his rims. Logan was drunk, he couldn't even pop all his claws! Still fucked em up! That beginning sold me.
This was a great movie. On a technical level and on a 'wide audience appeal' level. But the X-Men fan in me hated it, because of how god damn sad it was. It was the saddest movie I've seen in a long time. Coimpletely devoid of hope.
I remember reading somewhere that they purposely didn't say that Xavier killed the X-Men because it would draw attention away from this story and make it more about the X-Men. Makes sense to me and I'm glad that they only hinted to it.
This helps everyone emphasize daddy problems in the end when X-23 says “daddy” when he’s dying in her arms and if you’ve ever had a dad like ever you will cry
Before we check this out --- If we play the drinking game to whenever Kevin Smith says he cried,, teared up, got glassy, got choked up, etc. will we get drunk sooner or later?
on the radio in the car the reporter was saying that the incident at the casino was similar to an incident that happen in Westchester New York that injured a bunch of people and kill 7 of the X... and then Logan cut off the radio
Hi guy's, I'm OCD with symmetry and numbers. Gotten past touching everything with both hands; now I just count words I hear and break down their syllables and find the symmetry in the syllables. So when I watch action movies for the first time I count the number of action scenes. But in this one I had to count the number of times I cried. Six, six times. The action was what got you to stop crying through the movie. Might be the best movie ever...
Might want to see the theories that the Nerdist channel talked about. That Wolverine was the one who killed several Xmen like the radio mentioned in the film, but didn't name who did it. If you go back to when he first goes to see Charles, when he goes to leave you hear Charles say "What have you done?!" Just a suggestion. The theories seemed pretty interesting.
I don't think anyone made a reference to the old X-men because Logan didn't want to risk sparking a memory in Dr Xavier about how he was responsible for their deaths. They did hint at his being responsible for their deaths just before X24 kills him. He says he remembers what happened at the school. I think Logan was trying his best to protect Xavier from that horrific memory.
The alleged death of the X-Men is on a radio broadcast. It mentions an incident in Westchester and the deaths ofa number of people "and 6 mutants" before Logan turns it off.
what if: Logan 2, Magneto is the mutant the children go to, they tell him about Logan, then Magneto separates the adamantium from Wolverine causing him to instantly regenerate... Logan is actually a trilogy because Jackman really just said "Logan" is the last time he'll be the Wolverine... or I'm just high.
i guess so..... but even if they did go ahead and do that, it would take away from the movies meaning. plus Hugh is tired and doesnt wanna play logan anymore
Jonathan Phillips The movie was about legacy, the 2nd one would focus on X-23 through flashbacks of her training and assassin work while also tracking the kids fighting to meet up with Magneto then at the end would be the resurrection of Logan. 3rd would be about the legacy of the X-men with Logan become the headmaster of sorts of the new mutant mansion... oooorrr I'm just high.
I'm watching this after your Spider-Man: Homecoming review and wonder whether you'd backtrack on the suggestion of Clooney vs Keaton to return to the Batman role for Dark Knight Returns given his aMAZing work as the Vulture.
You said something about the "Westchester incident." I've now seen the movie twice and there's definitely a subtle nod to the fact that Professor X killed the X-Men. They say something on the radio that's cut off. the dialogue is something like "Several dead including 24 members of the....." then it trails off.
When are you guys going to do a review on Iron fist? To me the show was a bit messy and i didn't like it too much but i would like to see what you guys think about it...
Logan and Xavier were talking about the incident and Logan cuts him short before he can actually say in words that he killed the other X-men, but he basically says it.
The movie definitely implied that prof X killed his students with one of his seizures! (and maybe many more people - that radio show started talking about the westchester "incident" before logan shut it off). possibly that was what got his mind classified as a weapon of mass destruction. and i think they said logan and the prof were on the run, like logan grabbed the prof and ran to mexico to save the prof living in a govt facility or being put down or in prison or whatever. anyway on his last evening prof X remembered what he had done. he said he didn't deserve to live. it's what would happen if any of his seizure were allowed to run its course rather than tranquilizing him. all those people would have died. and the first time it happened nobody would have been prepared for it. maybe logan was away from the mansion or whatever. everyone dead just like that. it's definitely super dark and tragic, which is why they didn't talk about it directly very much. the viewer is given enough bits of info to piece the story together.
After the Casino scene on the radio the voice talks about the 'incident.' First he states a number of injured, then he clearly says 7 died. It cuts out right as he's saying the 'X-men.' Though he never gets the actual words out. But 7 dead. Storm, Cyc, Beast, Jean, Iceman, Colossus, Rogue. The X-men...dead :(
the radio said "this event is very similar to the westchester incident which left several hundred killed and injured including several members of the X....(turned off)" or something close to those lines. prof x deff killed them and basically destroyed his entire school
Xavier was for sure responsible for the deaths of the X-Men. The news clip after his seizure in Las Vegas trails off after mentioning 7 dead mutants at the "Westchester Incident". Also, as he opens up to x-24 who he thinks is Logan he mentions not deserving the perfect day and starts to emotionally breakdown as he begins to say that he remembers what happened and the pain he caused....so dark...so good...
when you guys watch the movie next time listen carefully cause when they're listening to the radio in the car there his an announcement that says "the westchester incident that killed several people including the x....." and then logan turns the radio off
My favorite thing of this film is when Wolverine is introduced in the First X-Men movie it was about helping a girl get to a better place (Rogue) and his end is about helping a girl get to a better place (X23)
jirayasama7 shit, I didn't notice that! Awesome.
No shit
jirayasama7 I would have never thought about that........
I now feel ashamed that I also never noticed that. Also, the first journey went north to south and the final one went south to north, kind of in a loose return journey to type of thing.
That's very true
Logan: "Don't be what they made you..."
*Everyone chokes up and let tears flow*
X-23: "Daddy....no....daddy"
*Everyone loses it, is an emotional wreck*
X-23 makes the cross into an X
*Everyone gives it a standing ovation*
Alex Love that's EXACTLY what I did!
I haven't cried that hard at a movie since Old Yeller.
This was totally how it went in my theater. I don't think there was a dry eye in the room.
I was trying fighting off tears until she called him "Daddy". It threw me off and felt forced
I agree with "daddy" maybe being to much, but it was still a great moment
Patrick Stewart's performance hits so much harder if you've had a relative in that condition. My grandmother had Alzheimer's and Xavier's behavior reminded me so much of her, every scene with him was gut wrenching.
And Hugh Jackman really captures how taking care of someone with dementia can affect the caregiver. You can just feel how emotionally draining and wearying that experience is.
Dafne Keen was amazing too. That "daddy" line, holy crap. It's especially poignant when you realize that could be the first time she's said that word since she was raised in a lab and treated like an object all her life.
KingOfMadCows My family is burying our grandmother tomorrow, who battled Alzheimer's for the last 10 years. I know exactly where you're coming from.
100,% agree
You guys did a disservice to Dafne Keen by just giving her the throw away line, "that girl did great". Name her, heap praise on her, she was amazing.
Seth Koehler Laura was literally the best part of the film in my opinion
Seth Koehler the movie was great. she wasn't.
the only reason we liked her is because she had very few lines.
if she had a bunch of lines, just like every kid actor in movies, she would've been annoying.
Seth Koehler she definitely needs her own movie a few years down the road
I think she might be able
To play Ellie from the last of us with Hugh Jackman as Joel
I am the batman they already make a great team for killing everything when necessary
Ethan Switzer had a couple of those , it's fucking destiny mate

Take Heath Ledger out of TDK and it’s 99.9% trash. Logan is literally LIGHT YEARS AHEAD of TDK .
Andreas Nordvall I’m 2 years late but EXACTLY
You know what, I'm glad someone feels the same way cause I'm kind of always in the minority. Like saying I loved the new Dark Phoenix when everyone else seems to hate it...
@@skrillex4x987 dark phoenix is straight up dogshit
I teared up when Prof X died, but bawled as Logan died and Laura whimpered "Daddy". Sat through the credits to recover.
They legit say 7 died in Westchester. prof X killed the Xmen. They took it straight from Old man Logan (xcept it isnt wolverine who kills the Xmen but prof Xavier). Its as good as stated.
exactly, yeah they just didn't want to have to spell it out for people. It's confirmed.

Logan had a great story. Something you had a emotional attachment to.
Jack B especially if you remember the first one and being so excited as a young teen to see it
When x23 quotes Shane at end and turns that cross to X was amazing!!!!!!
What Deadpool did for comedy in the super hero genre, Logan did for the serious, tear jerking emotion in the super hero genre.
wow mark, you understood the subtext--like 80% of the audience who caught the implication of xavier being responsible for schools destruction.
I wish Kevin would let Mark finish a few more sentences.
They did mention that Charles killed the X-Men.
Honestly such a good movie. Perfect blend of action and emotionally intriguing. Lie to me and say you didn't feel something while watching this

How do you have so many of the same jerseys with different pictures?
It's about fucking time Kevin!
Little did he know Kevin Smith prediction was correct. At his death of the age of 86 there were 4 wolverines he had seen in his lifetime.

How far did he get? I stopped watching because I thought he was doing the whole season.
Love ya guys. Thanks for keeping me company on a Friday night.
I love the fact that he keeps the samurai blade with him.
On his wall in his room.
Love the reference.
I lost it when Logan calls out to Lauren in such a fatherly voice! I miss my dad and can so relate to that!

Robert Downey - Iron Man
Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool
Heath Ledger - Joker
Wesley Snipes - Blade
Michael Jai White - Spawn
Margot Robbie - Harley Quinn
Tom Hiddleson - Loki
Chris Hemsworth - Thor
Good review, but as a fellow comic book geek, when you brought up the inevitable reboot of Wolverine, I'm surprised you don't bring up the possibility that X-23 becomes the new Wolverine. I would love that, as Dafne Keen was awesome in Logan and I would love to see her put on the yellow spandex, as the character does in the comics.
At the end, after what Logan did. I heard in my head Colossus speech to Deadpool about what means to hero, those 4 or 5 moments.
they said on the radio that 8 mutants died in the Westchester incident. Charles killed them
Dafne Keen, Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman all had borderline nomination performances.
This is a Sam Peckinpaw movie -- The Getaway, Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia and the Wild Bunch!
The children at the end represent hope. Mutant kind lives on.
Before we check this out --- If we play the drinking game to whenever Kevin Smith says he cried,, teared up, got glassy, got choked up, etc. will we get drunk sooner or later?
lol halfway in and I just noticed the VHS on Kevin's jersey hasn't been rewound.
on the radio in the car the reporter was saying that the incident at the casino was similar to an incident that happen in Westchester New York that injured a bunch of people and kill 7 of the X... and then Logan cut off the radio
Years later and the trailer still makes my eyes water. Phenominal movie.
Imagine if it was Danny DeVito instead of Hugh Jackman in Logan XD
DH Jones no thats fucking stupid
but I would love a sequel called "Erik" rated R movie with old Magneto
but logan is deceased, a mutant can't use their powers if they're dead
Jonathan Phillips Not everything is fully dead, cells have yet to die, his healing is on a molecular level.
Admit it Kev, it took this long to review because just thinking about some parts still bring the tears!
Hey Kevin, I might be wrong but during the scene where they're laying Prof X to rest Logan mentions Scott during the eulogy before he breaksdown.
it was Chris Claremont himself not a fan who had said he envisioned Bob Hopkins for the role of Wolverine.
did you guys see it in Supermax Imax 3D 4D XD Umax Ultra HD 1080 IP Clarity Extra Clear? cus i did, and it was good.
I loved the hell out of Logan. This movie makes the MCU look like the DCU by comparison.
I think there is a indirect reference to Jean, when he says that bad things happen to everyone he cares about
Just got nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay - woot!
There was a funny line when the mercenary steps into Logan's limo and says "I heard you were in Phoenix."
17 years, Hugh Jackman hung up his claws. Love ya, man! Nobody will replace ya, bub!
Did you just call him BLOB?
After the Casino scene on the radio the voice talks about the 'incident.' First he states a number of injured, then he clearly says 7 died. It cuts out right as he's saying the 'X-men.' Though he never gets the actual words out. But 7 dead. Storm, Cyc, Beast, Jean, Iceman, Colossus, Rogue. The X-men...dead :(
the radio said "this event is very similar to the westchester incident which left several hundred killed and injured including several members of the X....(turned off)" or something close to those lines. prof x deff killed them and basically destroyed his entire school
Omg can you believe if they brought Michael Keaton back I would camp out for that...
That would have me more excited than any of the DC cinematic mess that's going on right now
Xavier was for sure responsible for the deaths of the X-Men. The news clip after his seizure in Las Vegas trails off after mentioning 7 dead mutants at the "Westchester Incident". Also, as he opens up to x-24 who he thinks is Logan he mentions not deserving the perfect day and starts to emotionally breakdown as he begins to say that he remembers what happened and the pain he caused....so dark...so good...
when you guys watch the movie next time listen carefully cause when they're listening to the radio in the car there his an announcement that says "the westchester incident that killed several people including the x....." and then logan turns the radio off
There is another great comic book movie that people forget: Unbreakable by M. Night Shyamalan.
