It's not a formula. It's respecting the character and doing what's right for them. Should Superman be R? Never in a million years. Wolverine should have been R since the beginning. Deadpool, Logan, Punisher, etc., are R rated characters.
I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything What have I become My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt
They would never green light R-rated superheroes movies if they would not guaranteed money. But after the success of Deadpool and Logan they would green light it BECAUSE of those movies prior. No other reason they would green light it. As for the DVD cut, you could rationalized it because they would of not generate that much money anyway
Syauqi Alawi they would lose so much money if they decided to make a Batman or Superman rated R. In general the Justice League doesn't work in R but I can see Gotham's Sirens being rated R
the problem with that is it would really have to be quite a singled out story. especially if it's part of the DCEU. as people who can't watch it due to age might get lost if they brought up story points in later movies.
8th wonder of the world What I've been hearing from these Logan reviews is that Mangold was given way more control over this film, and in turn, he was able to create his own little "universe" and isolated story. Yeah, there may be some congruencies between this movie and past X-Men plots, but this is a standalone film compared to the rest. That's what I expect from this Rated R Batman movie previously mentioned. I don't want it to be forced to fit in the DCEU. It just needs to respect the characters and their backstories within the movie. Let it stand alone.
Man Myth and Monster Genres are defined by cinematic techniques similar plots and story structure. You could make a good argument that marvel has a very fined tune style that could be a genre.
DCEU fans: "CRITICS HATE DARK MOVIES! THEY WANT FLUFFY JOKE FILLED MARVEL CRAP!" >Marvel based film that's bloodier, grittier, and deeper than any DCEU film gets made.
The Wrestling Enthusiast Oh definitely, but these corporate slaves don't grasp actual problems. They cherrypick certain complaints and push their victimhood narrative.
Xaqq DeRipper yep. 'The avengers' films and star wars movies are more than enough for now... fox is currently doing great things with the 'X-men universe. I even enjoyed Apocalypse for what it was, despite its flaws; atleast it still managed to be fun...the wolverine cameo was pure carnage!!! so I can only imagine 'Logan' with its "R" rating. and the'Clint eastwood' western type of thing they're clearly going for! I'm beyond excited! *Snikt! *Snikt!
This was a MASTERPIECE in what a Superhero/Comic-book movie should be. It's raw, violent, emotional, funny, layered with character substance. Logan has always been complicated, but this gets to the core of the person he is,heartfelt, caring, mentally tough, driven. If you don't like Logan, then I'm not sure what else a movie can give you that this one doesn't. It's the package. I'm with Schnepp. it's nearly flawless.
Watched it today, and it is so hard not to call it my favorite comic book movie of all time. I put it up there with what is now the holy trinity of movies: The Dark Knight, Captain America: Civil War, and (now) Logan. All very different things, all absolutely amazing movies full of the TRUE embodiment of each of the primary characters (heroes, and in Dark Knight's case - villains).
I just got home from a screening with Hugh Jackman, Sir Patrick Stewart and James Mangold in attendance. It's absolutely incredible. What an emotional ride!
According to Chris Stuckmann, the X-Men comic book scene in the movie made a lot of sense, and was a good touch as far as world building goes. I trust him and I didn't think it was cheesy in the trailer mainly because I knew how long it'd been since the X-Men had saved the world in this timeline, of course they would have media based on them.
Madison Croft Seeing the comic book in trailer just felt a little weird to me. Kind of breaking the fourth wall a little, but I see what you mean. Since the world knows of mutants and not everyone hates them, I guess it would make sense that a comic book that romanticizes stuff that may have happened would exist.
Wait didn't John give Deadpool a 10/10 a Masterpiece score and DOFP was a 9 something? So shouldn't that mean Deadpool is his number 1 then DOFP in the X-Men universe?
no. he rates movies as a critic but that doesn't mean he can't love a movie that's not a 10/10. it's like when ppl say that a movie is their favorite movie even though it can be complete garbage critically.
I got really into the X-Men stories through the first Singer film and an age where Joe Casey, Grant Morrison, and Chris Claremont were writing the lead X-book, and I've been a big X-23 fan since 2003, when she debuted on X-Men Evolution (a very underrated TV series). I Can't wait to see this movie.
It's kind of poethic that in 2000 X Men started the new age of super hero films as we know them today, and no another X Men film will probably re-define the genre again.
Campea is right, marvel would never make a movie like Logan or deadpool. Stop saying give it back to marvel so then we can get a variety of comic book films.
ddoojjaa stop being a fanboy and giving marvel credit where they don't deserve it. Dead pool and Logan happened because fox had balls, it was nothing to do with daredevil and JJ.
Personally, I'm of the opinion that while the X-men should stay with Fox, the FF should go back to Marvel. Part of that reason is I just feel trying to incorporate the whole X-men and mutant politics where you've got a super-powered minority that's hated and feared along side super-heroes like the Avengers would drag X-men issues into every facet of the MCU. Fox has also shown that they can make good X-men movies especially now that they've booted out Tom Rothman. The Fantastic Four movies on the other hand have always been poorly received and have pretty much all been used more to keep the right away from Marvel then to put out a good movie.
Scaling back the budget? I just read that the budget for this movie was $127 million. I could have sworn I read somewhere a couple of months ago that the budget was half that. So which is it? If Fox did this film for less than $100 million, great job! Either way, focused stories without end-of-the-world scenarios and allowing the director to tell the story they need to tell, R-rating or not, is the way to go. Are you listening WB?
umm disney still has pixar, marvel, beauty and the beast. WB has kong, lego, dunkirk and dc. universal has F&F, Despicable Me 3 and the mummy. not like they ain't good competition
this is only my opinion but for me right now the best franchise are star wars, x-men (except for apocalypse XD), planet of the apes, kingsman and alien. All owned by fox excpet for star wars. But yes speaking of box office, kingsman, logan, and alien are R-rated so they will not win box office year
clasifi1 What do you mean not anymore? If you're referring to Logan... Days of Future Past is an X-Men movie, Logan is a Wolverine movie. I don't think you can compare the two
Usually when I like a movie I think about it for the rest of the evening. This movie had me feeling about it for the rest of the movie. Like that feeling after you've been swimming in the ocean all day and you're trying to go to sleep but you keep feeling the phantom waves. SOOOoOoOooooOOOOOoo good!
Watched Jeremy and Stuckman's reviews first which were true to their styles and great in their own ways but this is the review i was waiting for! Campea in his giddiness put a smile and Perri and her take really got me excited-er but Harloff was so on point as somebody who knew what Peirce meant to Logan as a villain and gave a strong showing in his measured responses and depth to story I wanted to know. I'm even more exciteder-er about Logan. Great job guys!!
This may be late but when I looked at her reviews, she didn't like Logan because it feels like a political statement. She also didn't like the Dark Knight because she thought Christopher Nolan has poor visual appeal and called it 'unbearably pretentious' . She thought Ghostbusters (1984) fails as a dark comedy. And get this, she judged Dark Knight as it heavily relies on dialogue but doesn't like Wall-E because it confuses her. She may not be the only one who doesn't like Logan, there are a few who don't, but when her opinions are compared, it's very inconsistent. And that raises questions than criticisms.
I just got back from seeing the film -- I haven't decided yet exactly how I would rank it among all other comic book films, but for me, it's the best of all of the X-Universe films. Amazing film. Some comic book films feel more like a ride -- this felt more like a serious dramatic movie with a real emotional core. It certainly has great action, but unlike far too many comic book films, this one really got me invested in the characters.
I am about to EXPLODE with excitement! Usually I avoid trailers and reviews but for this movie I am soaking it all in. Wolverine is my favourite superhero and I cannot wait to see this movie.
This is why this movie is my most anticipated superhero movie! GOTG2/WONDER-WOMAN/SPIDER-MAN/JL/THOR,they won't be as ballsy as Logan seems to be.I hope this movie cracks 100 million opening weekend so Studios understand when you don't sugarcoat characters that people will appreciate it.
The amazing thing about Hugh Jackman is the range: Logan in March as the best Comic Character ever and Greatest Showman in December singing/dancing as PT Barnum. Can we just nominate him now?
just got back from seeing it, this movie is a masterpiece. Maybe a bit slow at times but you get so much character development and fantastic performances from Patrick Stewart, the little girl (forgot her name = stupid me) and the best from Hugh Jackman.
I've always been a fan of genre and waited a long time to see it in the comic movies, with a mix of reality ...which is why I had a sigh of relief when Christopher Nolan did Batman the way he did, cause I waited years to see someone actually ''get it''. So if 'Logan' is the same I will definitely add this to my movie collection tho I still haven't bought Deadpool.
I hope Fox maintains this level of quality for all future X-Men films. Forget continuity, just tell smaller stories on smaller budgets and give the directors creative freedom. The tone and the rating of a movie entirely depends on the characters themselves.
While they are marketing this as Hugh Jackman's last go as Logan, pretty sure he said he was inspired by Keaton in Birdman to keep going. Unless he changed his mind again he'll be back. Hope the movie sets up and makes some kinda sense in the new alternative timeline besides a few small things X-Men has handled that really well.
i'm literally crying. I trust you guys and it seems this movie is everything i hoped for since reading the first x-men comic. How am I gonna watch this without breaking down when I'm already crying because of some review? I can't wait.
This is the end, isn't it. The end of the greatest run with two great characters. "Mr. Jackman, Mr. Stewart (you'll probably never read this, but who cares, it's my message and I need to say this), thank you so much for giving us such great portrayals of Wolverine and Professor X. From the moment I saw the original X-Men films, you guys became my childhood icons and will always continue to be. While the franchise may go on without you, the road ends here for me when I do go see this movie. I'll miss you both as these amazing characters. Thank you for the years of dedication and hard work!"
So hyped for this next week. I have a feeling that I'll be bawling my eyes out by the end credits. Going to be hard to see Jackman move away from the character.
Thank you Collider team, I've been so excited, and scared, about this film with one of my fav characters growing up, I can breathe, and just go enjoy it
Watched enough to get initial reactions from everyone ....and that's all I needed, will watch no more until I see it. So excited that you guys loved this movie!!!!
fox is 2 for 2
the hard R formula works
No making good movies work, the rating has no impact, many comic book movies have been R and sucked
miles pardoe Blade 1 & 2 were good.
2 for 3.
X-Men Apocalypse sucked.
soulfire Apocalypse isn't R
It's not a formula. It's respecting the character and doing what's right for them. Should Superman be R? Never in a million years. Wolverine should have been R since the beginning. Deadpool, Logan, Punisher, etc., are R rated characters.
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
Will never put down Johnny Cash's version. Both are amazing. However, it surprises me how many people don't realise his is a cover.
John: 9.5/10
Kristian: 9.5/10
Dennis: 9.4/10
Perri: 9/10
You're welcome
SPOILERS!
This is Logan. He has my back. I would advise not getting killed by him. His claws cut the bodies of his victims.
Ruben Quiros lmao
Ruben Quiros I heard Rick flags voice while reading this 😭😭
Ruben Quiros Omg. Such awful dialogue lol
What ls What it's literally some of the worst dialogue I've ever seen in a movie. I just sat there in awe of how hilariously bad it was.
Ruben Quiros Damn You!! LOL. One of the worst introductions I've ever seen in a film. I liked his delivery too, it was just too bad.
YESSSSSS!!!! FUCK YES!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait!!!!! Got my extra pair of pants right next to me just in case!
Are you gonna shit your pants when watching this film in the theater? Now why would you do that?
stop
Dude what will happen to you when Black Panther releases and if it gets raving reviews.
You'll probably explode with jizz and joy.
Does it have Sophie Turner in it or something?
Bart feedlemeen I've been here this whole time! Never left!
Dennis: *9.4*/10
Perri: *9*/10
Harloff: *9.5*/10
Campea: *9.5*/10
They gave better numbers for Civil War.
Yeah fuck Civil War but if they gave it higher scores, it means they like it more LOL. Its basic logic.
Hua Mulan JTE 5/5, Stuckmann A-, Jeremy Jahns Awesomtacular
People give way too much credit to ratings.
+Darth JJ Abrams
Deadpool was so overrated.
Calling it now, next week WB announce R-rated DCEU movie. Because that's how they roll.
Aquaman could work as a r rated film.
If Gibson directs SS2 i'll probably be R, as it should be, but not because of this
Syauqi Alawi Batman v Superman Ultimate Edition was Rated R. It wasn't like a hard R though.
God bless Deadpool for opening the door to future R-Rated Superhero movies such as Logan
Brandon Pozos I want to see a hard R rated batman movie
CM Mullis I agree, a nice contained Rated R Batman film with The Joker or even someone such as The Red Hood would be amazing in my opinion
the problem with that is it would really have to be quite a singled out story. especially if it's part of the DCEU. as people who can't watch it due to age might get lost if they brought up story points in later movies.

Daredevil opened the door for violent characters.
What are we? Some kind of Logan?
Oisín McMahon her claws trap the souls of its victims
Logan Adair is that the scent of death
"Professor X. Nice to meet ya"
Logan Adair It's sad how easily you're entertained...
Here comes Donald Pierce. The man who is part metal.
"Super hero fatigue".I think these movies are now a genre of their own!
Awesome review guys!!
They're getting there man!
Man Myth and Monster Genres are defined by cinematic techniques similar plots and story structure. You could make a good argument that marvel has a very fined tune style that could be a genre.
I don't want to be a movie critic, but I do want to see movies as early as critics lol. Fucking hate that I have to wait two weeks...
Alex Love same
KingofDemise666 It's been 3 days drama queen
Just wait a week and Sony will be eyeing James Mangold to direct the Last of Us movie.
But seriously he should do it...
Varinder Bhandal as much as I love rami he should do the last of us movie
Varinder Bhandal We dont need a last of us movie, the last of us IS a movie
Even though it's a Sony property I don't want Sony near that movie. Their big budget stuff is always crap to okay.
Great wish. Unfortunately, Sam Raimi who directed the Spider-Man trilogy is still tied to the Last of Us movie.
I've never clicked on a video so fast

except sony was behind this not marvel studios
DC Movies can't tell coherent stories. Not DC's fault it is Warner Brothers
natanael murga Fox
t1gertank19 Nexflix has been gritty
logan is the reason why u shouldnt give everything back to marvel studios. U need more than 1 voice in the market for variety.

Lisandro Peña She is soooo cute!

MY BODY IS READY
Watched it today, and it is so hard not to call it my favorite comic book movie of all time. I put it up there with what is now the holy trinity of movies: The Dark Knight, Captain America: Civil War, and (now) Logan. All very different things, all absolutely amazing movies full of the TRUE embodiment of each of the primary characters (heroes, and in Dark Knight's case - villains).
Glad it wasn't a let down for any of this panel. Really good in depth review while avoiding spoilers. Good job all. 👏👏
Here we GO!
these are my favorite type of superhero movies. gritty not too fantastical . real stakes and tension
Excited as you guys are! Thanks for initial reaction!
campea 9.5 scares me because normally I totally disagree with him.
planetusa1 well kristian gave it 9.5 as well
It's everything 9.5 and above
I just got home from a screening with Hugh Jackman, Sir Patrick Stewart and James Mangold in attendance. It's absolutely incredible. What an emotional ride!
people should definitely support Logan. I want more comicbook movies to be well written, depth, and not afraid to go rated-R

It plays into the movie, doesn't feel weird at all when watching it.
Wait didn't John give Deadpool a 10/10 a Masterpiece score and DOFP was a 9 something? So shouldn't that mean Deadpool is his number 1 then DOFP in the X-Men universe?
haha, don't take him too seriously, he just fanboying in this moment, wait until the end of the year, it just got released.
mrcooldeadly85 I don't think Campea counts Deadpool as an X-Men movie.
mrcooldeadly85 you'd think so. I used to love Campea. I still like him but not AS MUCH as I used to.
Darewin Ocampo True
no. he rates movies as a critic but that doesn't mean he can't love a movie that's not a 10/10. it's like when ppl say that a movie is their favorite movie even though it can be complete garbage critically.
So jealous of you all! Can't wait to see this!
I got really into the X-Men stories through the first Singer film and an age where Joe Casey, Grant Morrison, and Chris Claremont were writing the lead X-book, and I've been a big X-23 fan since 2003, when she debuted on X-Men Evolution (a very underrated TV series).

It's kind of poethic that in 2000 X Men started the new age of super hero films as we know them today, and no another X Men film will probably re-define the genre again.

can't wait to see this movie then come back and see what Schnepp thinks in the spoiler edition!!!!
I am extremely happy to hear that it is well done, i cant wait to go see it.
So does he wear the Wolverine suit?
Nah, I was hoping he would but ultimately it wouldn't have fit. We still see the costume, in toy and comic form. Fucking hell that movie was great.
Tickets booked, can't wait!
The budget of this film was $127 million. Let's not talk like it's a "low budget" flick.
Asian Movie Enthusiast no it wasn't, the budget was 97 million
The "dream sequence" classic costume ?
Campea is right, marvel would never make a movie like Logan or deadpool. Stop saying give it back to marvel so then we can get a variety of comic book films.

THE HYPE IS REALLLLLLLLL
This year is FOX years, Logan, alien covenant, war of the planet of the apes and kingsman. Except for star wars, fox own the best franchise
This could be a great year for Fox.
umm disney still has pixar, marvel, beauty and the beast. WB has kong, lego, dunkirk and dc. universal has F&F, Despicable Me 3 and the mummy.
not like they ain't good competition
Lucas Dossetto they used to have Star Wars lol
this is only my opinion but for me right now the best franchise are star wars, x-men (except for apocalypse XD), planet of the apes, kingsman and alien. All owned by fox excpet for star wars.
But yes speaking of box office, kingsman, logan, and alien are R-rated so they will not win box office year
Lucas Dossetto fox has the rights for the first six sw movies tho.
Xmen days of future past is the best xmen film
clasifi1 What do you mean not anymore? If you're referring to Logan... Days of Future Past is an X-Men movie, Logan is a Wolverine movie.
I don't think you can compare the two
Andrew Garfield X2 is the best, followed by X-Men: DoFP Rogue Cut.
Andrew Garfield It's in my top 5 superhero movies. I love it
Mr Peaches Latour Days of future past is the best but first class is very good.
Mr Peaches Latour Hey we all have different opinions both movies are great.

I'm so excited to see this now, even more than I was before.
Guys don't go to Rotten Tomatoes and read critics review of Logan because a "top critic" named Stephanie Zacharek spoils what happens in the film.
This was already my most anticipated film of the year. And now I'm even more pumped.
I CAN'T WAIT! BRING IT ON
This is great, I can't wait for this!

I'm seeing this in 12 hours at the Berlin film festival, could not be more excited!!
this is my most anticipated movie of the year

CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS!!
Everyone loved it!!! I'm extra hype to see it now!
was any of the cinematography done in black and white? I was hoping they included that in the movie in a few scenes
who else is waiting for the championship
I've always been a fan of genre and waited a long time to see it in the comic movies, with a mix of reality ...which is why I had a sigh of relief when Christopher Nolan did Batman the way he did, cause I waited years to see someone actually ''get it''. Logan has set a new bar in how comic book movies need to be spiderman and wonder woman and guardians
and justice League you better be amazing.
No, it hasn't set the new bar, it only came closer to the bar than any superhero movie.
great review, can't wait to see this now
How many times does he cry during the film ?
the Dream sequence kristian was talking is the scene involving professor Xavier right??
While they are marketing this as Hugh Jackman's last go as Logan, pretty sure he said he was inspired by Keaton in Birdman to keep going. Unless he changed his mind again he'll be back. X-Force should be the next rated R film.
You have no idea how happy i am to hear this☺.\|/
Can't wait for this one!!!
So Happy
Im excited now! thanks guys/gals!
I want to know how does it stack up to Dark Knight, Avengers 1 and Deadpool.
Just saw it.
OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is exactly the Wolverine movie we've always wanted!!!
I'm glad everybody on the panel really liked the movie i'm so pumped to see the movie now!
Oh dear god i cant wait till March 3rd.... you guys are so lucky
After 17 years, we finally got the berserker rage.
It's definitely looks like a character driven piece and Mangold is an actor's director.
SO EXCITED! And I also hope it becomes a trend.
I am even more excited for this movie with all the positive reviews.
I thought they would have from the first Blade movie which was rated R and very successful....can't wait to see Logan.
@John Campea Did you enjoy the Logan movie as much as you enjoyed the Logan trailer #1?
