Quick access to settings is the reason Nikon beats Canon. At fashion shows I see only Canon shooters fumbling with menu settings. They lose shots because they are never ready.
The D4 is my camera of choice. I have no problems with it at all. In the field It gives me the performance and flexibility that I couldn't get before. The in built grip and huge battery for 3000+ shots is such a benefit.
I still prefer my D4 to my D750 and my D800, hands down, period. I only use the higher MP cameras when printing large 20x30 or (A1) or larger. Just for fun, carefully shoot some jpeg images at ISO 50 (or even ISO 100) and run them through your favorite software... Great value in 2018-19... treat yourself...
With the sensor resolution be an issue for you? 16 megapixels is a pretty large step back from the D810. If doing property photography where you are using a low ISO, the D810 would at least allow for more detailed images.
Bought one with the same shutter count the other day for £1125. A little tip, don't go to WEX, MPB and any similar places. They are still charging between £1500 - £2300 for these.
This pro body is aimed at photojournalists and sports photographers hence the fps. Using the image quality button as an example here; you say why would anyone need this, you will only be shooting raw.. Well some photojournalists assignments require photos to be transferred to the press almost instantly which means they need to be shooting in jpeg and at a lower resolution for fast transfer speed. This also makes features like the white balance button necessary. Don't write something off before looking at who the camera is actually made/intended for.
it's designed like you said to do 20 minutes of video then time to cool. but it it's good to do short movies anyway. ps did you sort your eBay problem.
Hello Dom, Wanted to ask, having the D700, D300 and Fuji X-T1 I'm still quite interested in trying the Fuji S5Pro. You have owned all of these, I think. Do you thing the S5Pro still has some advantage in image rendition? Will the photos really look even better-more natural-than the D700? And compared to other bodies? Do you think the "low" resolution could be an issue? Thanks in advance! Love your city, I have got family in Edinburgh! Christoph
+zebrzyd i was shooting with my fuji s5pro just yesterday. still makes great images but the iso in comparison to modern cameras is really crap, you really should only shoot at iso 100-250. will be doing a video on it soon
+Dombowerphoto Thanks Dom, and what do you think about the depth rendering of the camera? Is is more "film-like, three-dimensional" then the cameras we both own and love? (D700 and D300). Thanks again! Best wishes. Christoph
I still think you could get Photoshop and Lightroom for the cost of 2 of those coffees per month at Photogerge or other places that offer the 20% discount and continue two get updates. It should be a no-brainer
I've still got my D4.. need to sell it.. where'd you sell yours @dom? mine has 76k clicks on it.. it's great.. but.. very niche these days. Certainly crap for your usage of a camera and low DR isn't as good as d800/d810
Pretty pricey for a second hand D4 with that many clicks. A comparable one here on ebay AU is $3500Au = 1900pounds. 180,000 clicks I got to try the d4s, love the focus speed with pro glass.
You dont need that but you bought that, and its ok. People complain too much and 20mpix is more than enough. Not sure why you sold your d810 though ahaha
+Dombowerphoto make sense. Glad you can test those cameras and decide which one is thr best for you work. do you bring second cameras to your real state photography? thinking about it but my widest is 44mm equivalent :T
I hate ... the way people waste Shutter count ... just because it sounded good. just a waste unless they are actually getting action shots of something decent... painful for me to watch :)
£2,500 for a D4! Stop buying gear on eBay. Try a website I found called WEX Photographic. Their used department is enormous and I find to be cheaper than ebay with 14 day no quibble returns and a 12 month warranty. Their customer service is excellent and tgey have free next day shipping on orders over £100. I bought a D700 from them for £410 with 26,000 shots on it and currently they are selling D4's with under 100,000 shots for less than 2k. They also except PayPal and do part ex. What are you thinking of to replace the D4 then?
If your not doing sports or going to a warzone then the D810 is good enough. I own the D750 and im a bit dissapointeed that they downgraded the selection dial to a cheapy from the D700.
You should have enough balls to trust your white balance and the wife finding out. Well if she watches your videos your balls will also need colour balancing. So amusing. Cannot wait for he next episode. Nice one Dom
I don't know what us more funny, the video or the comments?!? Lol 😜 Great camera(s)! But I bet you all the hair on your head that you sell it and get (yet) another D700! :o)) lol 👍🏻👍🏻
You shoot real estate and landscape ? Can't understand why you'd spend so much on a battered well used sports camera? You won't beat the D810 for what you shoot....like me. With cameras like the D610 and D750 not far off a grand new now, why spend 2500 on a well used speed machine?
+Dombowerphoto I did but nearly 2 and a half grand for that! Lol I just thought it was an odd choice with the weight etc for your style of shooting.......I've just got the d810.....those tones at ISO 64! Now you're talking :D
+Jonathan Fletcher he keeps selling and upgrading, I have done this too and really regret it. I wanted a D4 but your comment just made me realize that I'm suffering from upgrading syndrome lol
Hmmmmm definitely not impressed. If this was your choice, and bearing in mind you are a Scotsman with an eye to a bargain, I would have gone for a brand new D4s at £3300 current internet prices. However, no way would I have swapped a good D810, a 35MP professional jobbing camera that will take most assignments in its stride with minimal bloat for the mess that is the Nikon 20Mp flagship model; gawd even my D7100 has 24MP, its hardly better than my phone. Even the olympus OM-D can manage 40MP. Yes the buttons are dreadful, Nikon couldnt design a well thought out camera if their lives depended on it, but that is true of all their models. Nikon seems suddenly barely capable of making a professional camera. You pick up a professional camera and it feels luxury in the hand with everything that is needed within finger reach with nothing else on the body at all. Compare with Leica SL, easily outperforms the D5 in everything that matters, is class leading in focus and video and only has 5 buttons and you set those to what you want them to be; its designed for professionals and is professional quality. Hasselblad and PhaseOne are also professional quality. Even Fuji is nudging into the professional market. Nikon has become prosumer really. The D810 is the best camera they make and when that is withdrawn I doubt they will have a truly professional model in their range. Think again love and stick with the D810, unless you want to start a new career as a sports protog the D4 is a joke for a real estate guy ;-)
+Vici Martynov And what happened to this, "despite the fact I am skint I might be able to scrape together enough for a D810 and leave it to my kids". You have sold it in under a month. Gawd my father left me a Leica IIIg and an M3, not this plastic junk, it wont be worth having in 5 years he he
I'm confused, are you mostly an interior real estate photographer? Surely the D810 would be vastly better for this type of work. It's a lovely camera for sure the D4 but 16MP super fast shutter and low light capability would be less than ideal for your type of shooting. If you are shooting weddings and sports events then it does make sense.
DOM!... STOP BUYING NIKON. I am free from the crap that Nikon offers. I will NEVER buy Nikon EVER again. I could not be happier that I finally sold my CRAP Defective800E. Strictly Canon & Pentax (645D).
Dom, Given that digital photography is now available to anyone with a mobile phone or pocket camera, are you still able to make a living from photography ? If so, how do you do it (if this is not too personal a question) ? Many thanks freedriv082000
Quick access to settings is the reason Nikon beats Canon. At fashion shows I see only Canon shooters fumbling with menu settings. They lose shots because they are never ready.
The sheer joy on your face just makes the video!
The D4 is my camera of choice. I have no problems with it at all. In the field It gives me the performance and flexibility that I couldn't get before. The in built grip and huge battery for 3000+ shots is such a benefit.
Give it a week... "Oooooh so and so feature is so crap... I'm selling it". Two months later... "I've bought it again"...
I just ordered one.and I got the 20 mm lense also
Reprogram the Movie record button to change ISO function.
Get a small XQD card (16GB) for JPG backup only (only in case of failure or the SD card).
I still prefer my D4 to my D750 and my D800, hands down, period. I only use the higher MP cameras when printing large 20x30 or (A1) or larger. Just for fun, carefully shoot some jpeg images at ISO 50 (or even ISO 100) and run them through your favorite software...

Lol , hey Dom. I live in NYC and there is a hospital called Bellevue here and you might want to visit it. You're crazy 👊🏾👍🏾🍻😺
GET THESE SPIDERS OFF OF ME!!!
Bought one with the same shutter count the other day for £1125. A little tip, don't go to WEX, MPB and any similar places. They are still charging between £1500 - £2300 for these.
Button configuration has been similar since nikon d1 on pro bodies so you could transition with ease
Can you set another button for iso or use easy iso?
So entertaining! There it not a lower numbers of shutter actuations now :)
I think when you hit the buffer that was the photography equivalent of your 'vinegar strokes'
This pro body is aimed at photojournalists and sports photographers hence the fps. Not really clear why you need a lowlight speed king. Still interesting
it's designed like you said to do 20 minutes of video then time to cool. but it it's good to do short movies anyway. ps did you sort your eBay problem.
I would have gone for the D4s. but nice camera.
Nikon D700 & D4 both great cameras!
What about glass? Didn't you sell most of your lenses? It's more about the glass than the camera body. Nice camera though.
+Gil B 50mm is all i need

Wait a minute! WTF You had problems with the d810. What kind of problems?
I've still got my D4.. need to sell it.. where'd you sell yours @dom?
mine has 76k clicks on it.. it's great.. but.. very niche these days.
Certainly crap for your usage of a camera and low DR isn't as good as d800/d810
+Greg Thurtle how much you selling yours for?
+Dombowerphoto I'm selling mine for 1800 with extra battery a cf card and extra xqd card
Mate your putting your shutter count through the roof!
Pretty big to fit on most big camera multis, looks a lot bigger than the GH4
I STILL regret getting rid of my D700.
The d4 is my current dream camera. One day man lol
+Eric Rossi even second hand with a quarter of a million shutter count is is solid!
oh trust me, ive been looking lol. Might have to sell my d800 and a few things to compensate!
Did you buy a S5 Pro again? :) What are your thoughts about it after all these years?
It's slow. A bit malfunctiony but sensor is still good in good light
Dombowerphoto Thank you! :)
I've only just watched the intro, and I've already liked the video. :D
Strong shutter? Try D3
Got a D3 & a D700..they can't do as many shots in a burst...
Hard to find a D4 or D4s for less than 5K in Australia. Cats trying to sell their D4's for up to 6K so they dont spend so much on the D5.
Pretty pricey for a second hand D4 with that many clicks.
A comparable one here on ebay AU is $3500Au = 1900pounds. 180,000 clicks
I got to try the d4s, love the focus speed with pro glass.
I know this was a long time ago but I just picked up a d4s in mint cond. With 2 oem bat. With 70k shutters for $900.00
Wow the D4 is only 3K Aus in the UK ? Brand new its still 6K in Australia. Typical !!!!!
Did you resolve the D700 problem?
+Nicholas Fox did a whole video on it, titled my ebay problem
Thanks mate - checked it out and commented.
So so funny Dom, had me in stitches!
hi dom i like watching your video's!
A dutch photographer.
+Jan-Dirk Overeem thanks
what is average price USD for one of these?
around $2300
i found one with 12k actuations for $3000 USD do you think it is worth the money?
assign the record button to ISO via the control customization
The ISO, WB, QUAL are down there so a PRO can adjust there setting without taking there eye of the camera
"fragile" on the D4 XD
What lens are you using to film this, that camera up front left at the start looks hellishly distorted? PS you make me laugh, keep the videos coming.
Yeah, now my neighbours are thinking that I was watching porn. Thanks Dom :-)
+Pn Junction chipmunk porn
that was bias. try it again with a prime lens. the d4 smokes the d700 in low light situations.
Why oh why sell the D810. I would have thought it was better suited to your line of work.
Jeez dude, I paid 2.5k for my D4 with 15k shutter on!! That's a high price !
+Tom Bridge where did you buy that?????? (checks bank account again)
Mbphotographic.co.uk in Brighton!
i was never impressed with the d4, always loved the d3 more. d700 as well for that matter.
You dont need that but you bought that, and its ok. People complain too much and 20mpix is more than enough. Not sure why you sold your d810 though ahaha
+Stephan Eilert the d810 is more camera than what i need and slows down my work flow so is not nessessary
+Dombowerphoto make sense. Glad you can test those cameras and decide which one is thr best for you work. do you bring second cameras to your real state photography? thinking about it but my widest is 44mm equivalent :T
if I didn't know better errr have another pint or two
I hate ... the way people waste Shutter count ... just because it sounded good. just a waste unless they are actually getting action shots of something decent... painful for me to watch :)
What kind of liquor do you have in your coffee?!?
Is there Scottish Whiskey in that Irish Coffee?
You will sell that and buy the D810 again. Cuz 810 is a much better overall cam than the D4!
Hahaha, possibly the most mis-informed comment in the history of the Internet!!!
+colblimp u can think and believe whatever you like. I've had both the D4 and the D800 and the d810. Only kept the d810. Sold the rest.
+ChiFoto I'm keeping my d810 and buying a d500 in about 2-weeks. Not sure why one would go for a second-hand D4, especially with all those actuations.
£2,500 for a D4! Stop buying gear on eBay. Try a website I found called WEX Photographic. What are you thinking of to replace the D4 then?
Camera Jungle is better than Wex for second hand gear IMO.
Toyin Oshodi Yes. It is cheaper. Camera jungle rocks!
Fuji lens on a Nikon?............did not know that would work.
Holy crap you should make videos about selling and buying camera for the best price 😂
warning! Sold it already.
+Dombowerphoto lol the wife found out lol
+Dombowerphoto Seriously? Mind you, I had a D4 and sold it 3 months later, so don't feel so bad. Upgrade to a i7 6 core and reclaim a D810.
+Lee Butler bingo
If your not doing sports or going to a warzone then the D810 is good enough.
I own the D750 and im a bit dissapointeed that they downgraded the selection dial to a cheapy from the D700.
Why did you sell it? Been thinking about buying one so it'd be good to know.
You replaced your 810 with a 700? wtf?
+patio87 you never let go of your first love
+Dombowerphoto I am trading my D700 and D4 in as I have the D810 but will be using the D5 .. If you first love is the D700 you can easily use the D4
You should have enough balls to trust your white balance and the wife finding out. Well if she watches your videos your balls will also need colour balancing. So amusing. Cannot wait for he next episode. Nice one Dom
Lying to the wives... We may try, but they know the moment we entered the door or answer the phone... at least mine does.
Is this a camera review channel?
seems like a drunk hang out area that maybe will talk about a camera
I don't know what us more funny, the video or the comments?!? Lol 😜
Great camera(s)! But I bet you all the hair on your head that you sell it and get (yet) another D700! :o)) lol 👍🏻👍🏻
Triple pro!
that better be almond milk
Oh wait..the S5pro is a D200.....figures.
WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS??? I cant handle all these nikon unboxings....i am simply well gel as I am skint.
Surely, if you really have to, that would be 'jel'?
You paid too much for your worn out D4. I just bought a new D4 for $2500 US.
You shoot real estate and landscape ? Can't understand why you'd spend so much on a battered well used sports camera? You won't beat the D810 for what you shoot....like me. With cameras like the D610 and D750 not far off a grand new now, why spend 2500 on a well used speed machine?
+Jonathan Fletcher did you not hear the FPS!!!!! thats what it is all about
+Dombowerphoto I did but nearly 2 and a half grand for that! Lol I just thought it was an odd choice with the weight etc for your style of shooting.......I've just got the d810.....those tones at ISO 64! Now you're talking :D

Like your video's anyway, but i'm exausted after watching.
£2500 ?!!
You'r not getting your money back.
You could' have bought mine for less.
27.000 clicks , LNIB
too much camera for you bro.
