We test the very best of Nikon against the apex of Canon, to answer the most important question - which one is better? The two years old battle-tested magnificent Canon 1D X or the all new all powerful Nikon D4S?
I love the way this review was clearly designed just to get loads of outraged comments... A Canon strap on a Canon camera, really, how low can DR sink?
You are obviously new to DR. :D That is something DR has done since their 2nd season with Kai on the show a few years back. Welcome to the DR-realm of weirdness. :D
John Leslie Hahaa! I'm so sorry, mate. I'm so used to seeing people getting so horrified about the switched straps, that I, by mistake, took your comment as such a comment. :D I'm a bit mad at DR that they didn't do a proper review of this cameras instead of this mess.
Let's be honest. If you are considering either of these, you probably have some pricey glass already. Save money and stick to the brand you had before.
I don't think I will be upgrading my D4 to D4s. I had to chance to try D4s for 15 minutes. I quickly shot both D4 and D4s in exactly the same variety of settings. I compared both photos after I got home. Without any doubt D4s is an improvement, but it didn't give me much excitement. I didn't see a major difference. I agree with some other reviews mentioned, I think ISO performance is about 1/3 stop better at best.
canon feels a part of me. we gel together. something i never felt with nikon. tho...nikon dslrs are great too. i guess its just a personal preference folks
I've got two 1DX's and i love them! But i hate that they dont offer the opportunity to edit and add text in camera, like the D4 does.. It's a great feature when you're in the pouring rain and have to wire photos to clients..
Test 1: Yes: Nikon was more silent. Clear winner. Focus error I blame on the photographer! Thus impossible to compare the pic quality side-by-side Test 2: ISO Test. Nikon is a clear winner! (Bloody impressive ISO performacne!) Test 3: Canon blew the Nikon away. Conclusion? As a Canon-fanboy I would go for the Canon. But if you know you are going to do a lot of low-light shooting, well obviously the Nikon. As an over-all camera? The Canon; Better a bit grainy than not being able to track and capture the subject. But I really want that Nikon's buffert-space. That burst-mode NEVER stopped.... And if you have a lot of money, do like a person I know: Have both! (He has EOS 1D Mk 3 + Nikon D3) Lastly: As so many have pointed out: Why compare a brand new camera with a camera that is 2 years old? And This test should have been an epic one, not a mess-around.
I was in HK briefly to wait for my next flight, a couple of days ago, and it was raining cats and dogs almost the entire time I was there. Kudos for DRTV team, still went out to make video review even when it was so wet. Kai wearing "unabomber" raincoat, might be weird to some viewers, but I understand why, after experiencing HK rain myself. PS: I made this comment a few years ago, that DRTV and HKTB should get together and offer a Hk walking photog tours. I'd subscribing for sure. I'm going back there again soon, hoping it'll be less wet.
How much longer are Canon/Nikon going to fit those big flippy flappy mirrors to their camera's.Sony's A7R can match them for IQ at a fraction of the size and cost.
Because those big flappy mirrors give those camera's the best AF performance. The A7R can't compete with an entry level dslr in that field to be honest. Noise performance on the 1Dx en D4s is also better than on the A7(R).
Do you really think Canon and Nikon wouldn't insta-switch to that nonsense Sony are using if it didn't work better? It's just Sony fumbling around in the noisy dark for a point of difference.
Mirrorless cameras might be the way of the future but it isn't for now. Not for the next 5-10 years or so. Even then, people will always like optical viewfinders.
EVF's are sh*t regardless of what the middle market photographer wannabees flame out on the www. No serious working photographers use mirrorless for much of importance - just look on the news, at sports, weddings, in the studio etc.... not much at all. At best a hip level pea-shooter for close range stuff. But otherwise you just cant match the durability, battery life, AF, optical 100%VF blah blah. Keep your mirrorless flash in the pan crap.. it will be obsolete before you know it (a la x100).
Peter Charlesworth Ah...you're that kind of photographer who measures skill with camera cost, and talks about pro's as if he was one. I work at a wedding studio with 5 other pros. Studio provides us Canons but we each shoot other brands for personal use. Consensus? They're all pretty good and we get paid regardless because it's our skill that defines the outcome. Not OVF or EVF or any other parameter wannabees talk about in forums.
those where jpeg noise comparisons? i want to see what the RAW iso performance is before the noise reduction the cameras does when processing the raw to jpeg in camera.
I've been a DRTV regular for quite some time now however equipment does not necessarily have to remain static from one video to the next. Everything must change . . . .
It's true. Burst speeds and better weather sealing and ruggedness on the canon with better teles, less ugly and way better super High ISO performances on the Nikon and better wide angles. Now what would be perfect is a Nikon D4s with full AF working Canon EF mount so I can pop the 100-400 mark 2 and others on it.
So the conclusion is that the Nikon D4s is a little bit better in noise performance but the 1DX has a really big advantage in AF system especially in tracking objects. The test with AF tracking performance is more important than cosmetic ISO advantage over the 1DX. According to DXO test in noise performance the Nikon D4s score is 3074 and the D4 score is 2965 ( this is not much difference to be honest ). So doubling high ISO up to 409,600 is a simple marketing purpose
why did the canon miss focus in the first test (celeb is in restaurant)- the camera won't take the picture unless it's in focus...unless it's in manual focus...right? help..
I've watched a few videos of yours trying to get some insight on this, but I figured maybe just asking would be more helpful. Could you recommend a camera for videos between $500 and $2,000. I want to do 1920x1080 30 or 60fps. Something with a quick autofocus. Let me know if anything comes to mind.
I have an idea, why doesn't canon and nikon work on 1 camera together and split the profits. Make a camera with the auto focusing and CPU from the 1Dx, the image sensor from the D4s, and the video capabilities of the 5D mk3, then have the programmers from both companies work on making the best port of magic lantern for the camera.
Captain Cocoa Puffs I was thinking more as a one time thing because they cant seem to figure out how to make an all round good camera that will justify the insane price being charged. If they cant do it, then why not have a 3rd party make a camera that combines the best parts of both cameras (and probably even the 5d mk 3 ).
John Stintzi Have user swappable lens mounts, shorten the distance a little, then offer the user the choice to swap in a Nikon, canon, sony, and a range of other mounts. and just include all of the electronics needed for the mount to communicate properly with the lens for autofocus and other features.
So... at ~2:40... how did Kai even manage to miss focus with the Canon there? I know how of course, but what I mean is that even a rather incompetent shooter could pull off focus in that situation, it's only by being intentionally awful that that was achieved. You could say that it's a purposeful test of the camera in incompetent hands (not saying Kai is incompetent, but that he is acting as incompetent in this video intentionally), but in that case you need more shots to offset the chance introduced by the incompetence (like in the last test they did).
where are your previous models that you used to have? now that Alamby is no where to be found, i now miss the old digitalrev witht he models as the subjects
So just to be clear, the Nikon is hands down better in almost every way. Also the Nikon shoots much better than at the end on shutter burst mode if you tweak it in the customisation menu.

Great review K.X :)
i will take the canon 1d-x any day of the week, lots better focus tracking, although not always needed, faster shutter speeds, and no wonder news and press teams always use the 1d-x and bring back the pic's!and thats what its about my friend'if you only like taking some good photos just as well get a point/shoot,for the money,i think the canon is a much better camera, thanks.
A number can capture sound bites, yes. I think most are after the pic rather than with it (some can grab a short video clip just before the still). Olympus OM-D EM5 can add an audio note to an existing pic. The Canon 1Dx and Nikon D4 both have a button just to do that immediately after the photo too: "...the 1D X has a direct voice notes button". "On the D4, users can press a 'MIC' button on the camera back to record a WAV audio file that is matched to the image they just took. The image and WAV file names are saved with identical suffixes."
Here I am with my t4i and taking better pictures. No complaints! It's all about how you use it. I knew I wanted to learn more about video as well, so that's why I got comfortable with canon in the first place.

perfect, now we are waiting for the D4S vs D4
Where is Alamby??? Is it just me that realized she's been fine for a while now?
JasonG|Photography I believe Alamby has been gone since the start of 2014.. I could be wrong, but I know that she is not on the team anymore. :/
JasonG|Photography Yeah she has left DRTV, Its on her twitter (@AlambyL)
Themaw Nz NOOOOOOO! Is it because of the bloody producer? did she come back to Melbourne?
When he yelled SEX and that guy looked up and stared at him!
0:42 I'm dying!! XD
haahaha
actually that guy was watching Porn movie and suddenly reviewer said SEX. he shocked that how he knew?
LMAO
Cheesepuff
I couldn’t anymore...
Flawless presentation as usual... you simply can't fail with either of these cameras...
Canon strap on a Canon camera, that's wrong
We have a DRTV noob lol
Bongo2k in that case, my fault. No need to get hostile.
pay attention and learn to read first?
Yolo
Bongo2k kai always use nikon strap on canon camera yaahh hahaha
This is more like DRTV we remember! Great stuff, Kai!
Goat loving celebrity and illegal teletubbies lmao!
The part were that dude looked up when you shouted sex was hilarious. :P
Wistbacka Are you sure you didn't mis-read my comment? I'm talking about them using the correct strap being the strange thing...
John Leslie
Hahaa! I'm so sorry, mate. I'm so used to seeing people getting so horrified about the switched straps, that I, by mistake, took your comment as such a comment. :D
I'm a bit mad at DR that they didn't do a proper review of this cameras instead of this mess.
0:44
The guy in the background lol
I'm still going for the 5DMIII
Me too
Unless you're shooting sports. 5d III ALL DAY BABY !
+SoundsRight I thought 5DIII was good for sports....yeah it isn't 1Dx like but it is literally the next best thing in the Canon range...
+Krishna Doshi Isn't 7D MkII better for sports than the 5D MkIII?
Wistbacka Yeah I forgot about that beast... hope 5D Mk IV will have 7D2 like speed
Let's be honest. If you are considering either of these, you probably have some pricey glass already. Save money and stick to the brand you had before.
'You can customize it until you shiit your pants' - K.X.
You're the Jeremy Clarkson of the Photography world :)
I vote for Nikon D4s.
Now *this* is why I'm subscribed to DRTV! Great video review, informative while being good entertainment at the same time!
I don't think I will be upgrading my D4 to D4s. I had to chance to try D4s for 15 minutes. I quickly shot both D4 and D4s in exactly the same variety of settings. When kai said sex the guy was like what the fuck ?
Haha at 0:43 when Kai says "SEX" the look on that guys face hahahaha
Oh and the hip thrust haha
I noticed that too lol
00:43 when Kai said "sax" or "sex" whatever, the man beside him is just startled :D :D best!! haha
I've got two 1DX's and i love them! But i hate that they dont offer the opportunity to edit and add text in camera, like the D4 does.. It's a great feature when you're in the pouring rain and have to wire photos to clients..
are nikons generally more gbang for your buck? like it has a light beam for low light suto focus?
Depends, but the lenses do tend to be cheaper.
"D4s's iso51200 is as noise free as an Amish families home cinema room" Awesome ! LOL That's a great line.
Test 1: Yes: Nikon was more silent. Clear winner. Focus error I blame on the photographer! Thus impossible to compare the pic quality side-by-side

Just love the guy reaction when Kai say "SX!" at beginning of video
Impressed with how well the older Canon rated again the new Nikon.
I like the video editing and extra graphics in your new uploads!
I was in HK briefly to wait for my next flight, a couple of days ago, and it was raining cats and dogs almost the entire time I was there.

Entertaining review as usual. May I ask which focus mode/settings are you using on the D4s for optimal tracking? AF-C 3D or 51pt or Auto?
With the 1DC I heard people where using the 4K frames as stills from their video work so that's basically 24fps stills if you use it like that
Wonderful video comparison. What camera was used to capture the video is what I am wondering. Pls consider providing that information in some credits.
Canon 5D Mark III and 24-105mm. If you were a DRTV regular, you'd know that. ;)
I've been a DRTV regular for quite some time now however equipment does not necessarily have to remain static from one video to the next. Everything must change . . . .
you are one hot asian
Can you make a video about camera straps please? Would be great!
The sort of photographer who can justify one probably wants both for the versatility anyways. No casual snappers at that price point.
It's true. Burst speeds and better weather sealing and ruggedness on the canon with better teles, less ugly and way better super High ISO performances on the Nikon and better wide angles.

I only prefer the 1DX because I shoot Canon, but I think the D4S is an absolutely incredible camera
I love both the sound of those super fast shutter speed :)
Kays obsessed with burst modes on the high end DSLRs.
5:44
So, group AF is like AF-C with 3D tracking, but it uses a group of points to get the average distance to the subject?
So the conclusion is that the Nikon D4s is a little bit better in noise performance but the 1DX has a really big advantage in AF system especially in tracking objects. The test with AF tracking performance is more important than cosmetic ISO advantage over the 1DX. whats the focal length at 6:02 ? my guess is about 30-50mm
lol dat dude at 0:44 is like... damn where ?
LOL, anyone notice when he yelled "SEX!" some dude looked up at him like: "dafuq?!"
With wich camera are you guys filming the main videos ?
What about a comparison between the D4s and the 5D mark iii
When are you doing a the 1dx mark ii review?
+beyonka012 yeah i cant wait for that one too
2:27 D4s shows a lot more highlight details.
this is the best reveiw you guys have ever done
Canon great body. Nikon great sensor. I can't afford either.
I'd take either really. In the end both will get the job done, and that's what it all counts about.
NIKON 4 EVER!!!
why did the canon miss focus in the first test (celeb is in restaurant)- the camera won't take the picture unless it's in focus...unless it's in manual focus...right? help..
Do a video of comparing the D4 and the D4s
I vote D4S!
Laugh It Up Gaming Go for the Canon 80d. It's video auto focus is excellent
Ign Gates
Funny I just got my Canon 80D like 4 days ago! Guess I made the right choice!
I would concur great idea (but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon): )
Because then a slump occurs due to Canon and Nikon not pushing each other to make the better camera.
Razor2048 But then who gets to choose which lens mount to put on it?
John Stintzi
Have user swappable lens mounts, shorten the distance a little, then offer the user the choice to swap in a Nikon, canon, sony, and a range of other mounts. and just include all of the electronics needed for the mount to communicate properly with the lens for autofocus and other features.
Did you try group area AF?
So... at ~2:40... how did Kai even manage to miss focus with the Canon there? I know how of course, but what I mean is that even a rather incompetent shooter could pull off focus in that situation, it's only by being intentionally awful that that was achieved. You could say that it's a purposeful test of the camera in incompetent hands (not saying Kai is incompetent, but that he is acting as incompetent in this video intentionally), but in that case you need more shots to offset the chance introduced by the incompetence (like in the last test they did).
lmao at the guy at :44 second mark
Loved the new graphics!
where are your previous models that you used to have? now that Alamby is no where to be found, i now miss the old digitalrev witht he models as the subjects
It's a channel about photography, not about satisfacory services for old-school sexists.
Hahahaha...check out the old guy looking up when he heard "SEX!!" at 0.43
what lense did kai use on nikon??
Are these cameras good for casual snapshots? Thanks!
Very good but heavy
Digital Rev's moral: "Better" is always relative
So just to be clear, the Nikon is hands down better in almost every way. Also the Nikon shoots much better than at the end on shutter burst mode if you tweak it in the customisation menu.
This is only your opinion so don't speak for everybody. In my opinion the 1DX is better in AF system by tracking objects and this is more important than few cosmetic tweaks done by Nikon in ISO performance.
Sorry Michael Bla but having been a photographer for 15 years I can assure you that the ISO capabilities along with a crisper shot with less chromatic aberration is far more important than bust rates. The Nikon is far more than a few cosmetic tweeks, it has a superior sensor, superior chipset and is better for real world photography. The Canon is a superb camera also and I would happily shoot with that too but as it is the Nikon is the newer and better camera. When the next Canon 1D comes out I'm certain it will be better than the Nikon D4, that's marketing and technology for you.
mazdaman1980 Hehehe you can be a photographer even for 50 years but I actually own the 1DX and I had the D4 in my home for 2 weeks. And I know what I am talking about. And I didn't mention the burst rate, I did mention the AF tracking performance in my comment.
Will the 1 Dx in 2023 be OK for airshows or the Nikon 800e
1dx yes, d800 e - no
Neither or the canon 750 looking for something for airshows can't afford mirror have maximum £450 for a body so I can get a 100 -600 lens
The music is a bit intrusive.
"Look at that! You can customise it until you shit your pants"
Made me laugh too.
Nikon have had two years to analyse the D4 and 1DX and come up with improvements. Its hardly a wonder that some aspects of it are better. Canon don't produce corrective stop gap upgrades like Nikon so of course the 1DX is two years behind the D4S. Doesn't take a rocker surgeon or brain scientist to understand the D4S should be better. Great review K.X :)
i want a pentax k3 comparison :( pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaase
2:19 Behind him is george clooney?
yeah, yeah, yeah..... but what about the video capabilities of the D4s, is that up to snuff yet?
LOL! Awesome review!
"You can customize it until you shit your pants" (C) That was brilliant =)))
Where is Alamby?
Can you do a video on the brenizer method?
Does the Cano 1DX come with a USB port?
i will take the canon 1d-x any day of the week, lots better focus tracking, although not always needed, faster shutter speeds, and no wonder news and press teams always use the 1d-x and bring back the pic's!and thats what its about my friend'if you only like taking some good photos just as well get a point/shoot,for the money,i think the canon is a much better camera, thanks.
What lens is on the 1dx?
Please do a review on Pentax K-3!
The specs are too good to be true..
Miss Alambey the three as a team were fun now just not :(
where the hell is she?
She's living in Australia again...
Felipe Schuler Thanks for info glad to see shes well :)
instagram.com/alambyl
Felipe Schuler
damn thats boring..she needs to come back :)
digitalrev should make a dslr and lenses rental service in HK !
You can turn the "BEEP" at 3:01 off...
I love the new style of how digitalrev video is made :)
Great comparison video!
1DX is the best sports camera and the D4s is the best pap cam
Please do a review on Pentax K-3!
I would take 1DX if I had to choose.
got to love the k.x evolution!
The show is still so incredibly entertaining
how'd lok (or who ever edited) get two kai's in one video running at the same time?
insist on making comparisons, everyone knows that Canon is for photographers of marriage, and Nikon for professional photographers.
XD
5:42 Dat burst!!
What card were you using for the burst shots of fake celeb?
I'm a Nikon guy ... but serious if I had to choose between Nikon D4s or 1D X ... I'd be having trouble choosing..
i wonder if any dslr camera have the function to record sound during photo taken?
A number can capture sound bites, yes. I think most are after the pic rather than with it (some can grab a short video clip just before the still).
Olympus OM-D EM5 can add an audio note to an existing pic.
The Canon 1Dx and Nikon D4 both have a button just to do that immediately after the photo too:
"...the 1D X has a direct voice notes button".
0:42 i laughed at that guys reaction when you screamed SEX!
Can you review Panasonic GH4 and Sony FDR-AX100.PLEASE!!!
I want something that can record in 4K. I heard that GH4 doesn't have O.I.S.
What's that rap song at the beginning called?
