Tellin’ ya, that Shalimar EDT is for everyone. The cologne formulation too. The construction is perfection, and the smokey incense/vanilla combo is killah! Championship level fragrance for anyone who digs those notes.

Every version of Shalimar is different; the note breakdown is not the same. I wish that they would have gone over the differences, versus the brevity with which this was covered, but glad it was mentioned.

Definitely some big names here. I know it had to be tough to choose only one from each house when so many of the classic brands have released multiple powerhouse fragrances over the years. As far as others that I consider iconic, several come to mind: Opium, Poison, Miss Dior, Mitsouko, Vol de Nuit. I would even consider some of the Elizabeth Arden offerings such as Sunflowers and Red Door iconic because of their huge popularity back in the late 80s and eaarly 90s, even if you don't really hear anyone talk about them anymore. I can almost smell the JC Penney store just thinkiing about them. lol

Shalimar is just so good! It’s the only thing I wore from my early teens into my thirties-I still love it, but like to mix things up more these days. As you mentioned, Millesime Tonka is an incredible flanker, and I’m hoping it returns as part of the upcoming 100 year anniversary (along with all the other flankers).

  • @marinelab

I would also add Eau de Rochas, it was quite emblematic in the 80's (at least in France), designed for women who didn't go along with opulent 80's scents. It was the fresh alternative. I also remember Montana's Parfum de Peau, I don't know it it was very popular but the bottle was emblematic when it came out. I bought it when I was around 15 years old and loved it, my friends though not so much, probably too "mature", lol...About Cacharel, I think that every French little girl got "Anais Anaïs" gifted at some point. Even the name Anaïs became a super popular name then.

And I'm getting my hands on that one! Now to add for future video's two more iconic fragrances I loved when I was younger : Rive Gauche from YSL and Opium from YSL. "Good girls don't smoke, dance the tango, or wear Shalimar".
I really didn't know what aldehydes smell like until I smelled Picovaya Dama by Xerjoff, where aldehydes are amped up and the most dominant accord. I didn't get fizzy, zesty, effervescent champagne bubbles. That's what I almost get in the opening of Dior Eau Sauvage EDT. What I got was a strong, industrial strength cleaner irrigating my nostrils. Not good. I suppose aldehydes used in much smaller levels can do a lot for a composition. They're OK to my nose in Chanel No. 5. Hermés Equipage has an aldehyde note and it's great. I believe Penhaligon Sartorial has an aldehyde note. Great.
I'm a dude, but I have a decant of Diorella coming, because I'm an Eau Sauvage fan. Never smelled Diorella but Edmond Roudnitska said it was "Eau Sauvage perfected".
I bought Youth Dew for my girlfriend this winter. Also bought her the EDT of L'Interdit by Givenchy. Much different than the 1957 original I hear. But L'Interdit OG should be on this list. And Mitsouko and L'Heure Bleu, and Joy, and Vol de Nuit and maybe Arpege. But I guess not all can fit on a list of only 10.

Dalia's comments on fragrances she has the wearing experience history of definitely shows she is in the know to great lengths in some subtle nuances.
And Dalia @17:00 mentions the Aramis Aftershave being so good. Aramis EDT happens to be my SOTD :) love it! But even though having a modest collection of After Shaves, I don´t have the Aramis after shave. Will have to look it up. Love Pinaud´s Clubman Special Reserve, which has similarities to Aramis EDT.
Great guest as always, and great video!
PS. From the past, iconic women's fragrance to my nose was YSL Opium Parfum, I mean late 80's version, in the red plastic bottle with golden/transparent cap and a see through off-center circle in the body. That stuff made me think for the first time that smells could have beauty just like music or paintings.
Have started smelling women's fragrances systematically only relatively recently. From my limited sample space so far, the current ones that standout for me are Givenchy L'Interdit EDP, Dior J'Adore the alcohol free one, and Prada Candy.

My mom and I hated that fragrance so much we would end up throwing them away as no one in our family or that we knew wanted it either. Love Dalya and her curls! Giving me Like a Prayer vibes. 😍 I owned-wore both Caleche and Kelly versions for years and have decluttered but that was a fantastic choice. The notes are 😂vaguely similar I suppose but I never thought of Caleche smelling like Chanel No. 5. I’d add to this list Caron Tabac Blond, Joy by Patou, Bal à Versailles, and while Fracas is probably the more iconic choice I prefer Bandit.

I’ve always felt that Lagerfeld Classic is the male version of Shalimar. How did you two leave out Tabu?! You should do an old-time celebrities fragrance list. Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion would have to make that list.

Thank you for another wonderful episode with you and Dalya! The Diorissimo segment just hits different as it was my mother's signature scent . It's hard to find here and now (PH) so these days she's using Yves Rocher Muguet instead. I used to find it so heady as a kid but in hindsight, it was surprisingly fresh, even in the tropical heat where waxy white florals are the stuff of migraines.

Shalimar is not an amber, it's an oriental. An amber must have vanilla, labdanum and benzoin, of which Shalimar only has vanilla. And even if it does have incense and opoponax, it doesn't smell resinous. The bergamot in the opening, and the vanilla, leather and civet in the dry down are what stand out the most. Regardless of classifications, though, it is absolutely gorgeous. I'm lucky because I never knew anyone growing up who wore it, so it doesn't have any kind of associations and it doesn't smell dated to me so I can comfortably wear it. PS. I own the Eau de Parfum and love it, but funnily enough I didn't really like the Eau de Toilette, so I suggest anyone interested in this fragrance, to try both concentrations and to allow it time to get to the dry down, because that's where the magic happens.

So about 23 years ago I swore up and down that Tommy girl by Tommy Hilfiger was the best scent that came out during my middle school and high school years. No one ever ever talks about it but I truly adored it. Also Burberry Brit was my signature scent for the first half of my 20’s

I am surprised Dana Tabu Vintage wasn't mentioned. Quite unique. Reminds me of flea markets with the unburnt Incense sticks. Its mostly the Civet and Benzoin mixture.
    Definitely worth wearing..

The feminine list is longer. I am into the classics. Joy, Mitsouko, L’Heure Blue, Chamade, Rive Gauche, Cuir de Russe, Opium, Ysatis, Ma Griffe, L’air du Temps, Chanel 19, Madame Rochas, Femme, Miss Dior, Cabouchard, Je Reviens, Sortilege, Chloe, Charlie, Azuree, Aliage, Coco, Babe, Jovan White Musk…so many are lost, reformulated or discontinued. I guess the unisex list is next.

Had to go find my Shalimar and Youth Dew. Went with Shalimar this evening, but Youth Dew will be in the rotation soon. My personal iconic fragrances are Femme, Boucheron, and Coco. The old versions. And may I say that the videos you do together never fail to make me laugh. If anyone hasn't seen the video about the vintage fragrances from the storage locker, you are so missing out!

I wore Halston by Halston almost exclusively in the 80s. The "new" Halston is NOT the same- something is missing. Does anyone know what the deal is? I havent worn fragrance since the early 90s due to allergies but, boy, Halston was the best fragrance of all time for me. Full transparency- I also liked Youth Dew by Estee Lauder!
