I'm both impressed with and relieved not be someone like Mick Fanning with their knowledge and meticulous nature of their equipment. The fact that he can identify 90% of the shapers of unmarked boards when he himself has ridden for the same shaper for decades is unfathomable to me. And then understanding the subtle differences between the hundreds of fin options out there is something I still cannot grasp. I'd love to have Mick's brain to know all he knows about what affects what with boards, but there's also just something very relieving about just picking one board and one set of fins and going with it.
@@Optable Haha, even if I could, I wouldn't enjoy the mindf*ck of trying to decipher what works on each board and what doesn't. I'd just ride them and have fun.
Big thing here is being able to ride well enough to feel and notice the difference too, and get the most out of a board. Most of us casuals will never even be able to get the most out of whatever board we have.
Next year y’all should do an average person skill level and see if you can have shapers shape a board that could potentially improve the surfers surfing based off the shapers knowledge also in average conditions… I think it would be a sick video especially surfing mushy ass waves it’s hard for some ppl to improve bc of the board choice
To be honest I see some huge turns by Mick, big sprays, actually bigger than with other boards of the trial, I also can see him going down the line very fast! Maybe not the performance he would like... but I still can see great maneuvers. The board's totally different from what he likes to ride and you can see him trying to adjust his bottom turn! If we compare Kelly's carving 360 with Greg's board the Electra is way more clean that Mick's one! If you compare Kelly's performance with this board and Mick's you can understand that different styles adapt better to different types/ shapes of boards. Just check Kelly's or Adam Robertson surfing the Electra model by Greg Webber. In the 80's the same thing happened with Shane Herring and Banana model by Webber surfboards. I would like to see Joe Parkinson on the next edition.
That board was slow, no drive off the bottom. Even a pro like Mick had trouble multi-pumping his bottom turn. Give Mick a Ducks Nuts and let white lightning be white lightning. To say I didn’t enjoy the surfing is an understatement. Sorry you had to endure that Mick; and yes, you should’ve let it float off.
Your comment I 👍🏽 like. C’mon folks, you gotta agree and hit the like button, Johnny Bill is right, leave one flick mick alone, we’ve seen that turn before, over and over and over….
Remember when Slater Designs debuted their first three boards, the Dan Thompson designed Sci-Phi and Omni which every surfer on the planet knows about and sold in the bazillions and Weber's Banana which... ummm.. yeah nobody knows about. Slater rode the Banana in a competition at Snapper around the time of it's release and it went like a hessian bag full of spuds. The only Weber that goes good is the downdraft variety.

You can't afford a dark arts quiver, 3 pyzels, 12 channel islands, and 9 tokoros? blasphemy

You mean different like using Z instead of S?
A retired performance surfer that we’ve seen too many times is not the best choice for that kind of shapes.
Meh. Mick is timeless especially now that he's off tour. Love what he's doing on these boards.
Surfs better than 99.99% of surfers on the planet. Have Kit-Kat.
@@shockmarkets7384 If you’re talking about KS you’re right !
@@commercialbreak8290 Throw him in the mix if you like. You'll get no complaints from me.
The soundtrack of the surfing parts was terrible
