    I think some people took what I said wrong.. I DO NOT CARE HOW I LOOK with the helmet, I'm only hesitant about it because of what it does to my senses under water. I'm worried it could put me in a worst position. BUT im going to try more out to see if I can get used to them.

    Awesome you are back on the horses back Koa .The GATH is the best helmet out there. Mine is a comfy fitting helmet with the optional visor for those 6 hour brain melt sessions in Indo. Happy you are back in the water and surfing. I know how you feel about a helmet as a lifelong skier I had every excuse to not wear one. You put it on the line in big treacherous waves shallow reefs and wild crowds find one that fits and you can tolerate and then wear it. It makes sense ask Kai Lenny.

    • @jamesroscoe7555
      @jamesroscoe7555 8 місяців тому +4

      Yeah, I only switched to wearing a helmet skiing because it was warmer. The first season wearing the helmet I had a terrible crash (while pushing boundaries) that smacked the back of my helmet on the raised edge of a metal barrel.
      Helmets (at least the hard shell ones) are great for preventing skull fractures. Kai Lenny's crash is a great example. The helmet cracked instead of his skull. He still had a concussion, but not having a cracked skull is totally worth it. I definitely was thankful for that in my ski crash.
      I do think that it is a matter of risk analysis. I don't wear a helmet surfing but I also do not surf heavy slabs. You need to be able to protect yourself in a fall regardless, as a helmet will not protect against a broken neck. Falling head first in shallow water is dangerous helmet or not. Knowing how to fall safely is super important.

    If all these other chargers can wear em and get drained, so can you. In any of the heavy clips of long rides, the last thing anybody notices is the dome. Time in the barrel, speed, style, approach, technique, and awareness all come first, to the point nobody even notices the skull protection when scoring or onlooking high risk waves. Johnston, McNamara, Smith, etc: you don't even see it as some dampering to their rides. Everybody is rocking them for different reasons, and nobody is going to point the finger at you for being safer and surfing longer than they are.

  • @bobcon22

    the thing that's throwing you off more than anything (or rather the reason why you don't like the helmet) is the reduction in your hearing, which can throw everything else off, especially your balance. I live and surf in the northeast so I'm in a hood 5 months out of the year, and when I'm surfing at some of the sketchier reef breaks I'll pull my hood back right before I commit to paddling for the wave and it makes a big difference...I'd rather be cold that eat it. Those surf helmets need a bigger cutout for the ear/hearing...take a look at the nfl helmets...it's at least worth passing on to the helmet companies to see if they can develop a helmet that doesn't reduce hearing as much

    Your description of disorientation with the helmet on underwater makes complete sense. However, you are status post concussion & still recovering from it which may play a part in the discombobulated sensory overload at this point. Your plan with the new helmet others seem to favor wearing for multiple brief sessions is smart. Give it time. Give your brain time. Time to heal..time to recover & re-map those once familiar pathways that established over a lifetime of surfing & now need to grow again. You’ll get it back as the magic of “neuron memory” leads the way.

    I don’t get you kids. I started wearing my Gath back in ‘92 or ‘93.. years I caught crap from some of the boys, but I was riding a 10’7” gun in 20 plus waves. I was in my early 30’s and fit like a gym rat. I got hit with my gun in the side of the top of my head. Only got a bad bell ringer, but it broke my helmet and Gath replaced it free, and it’s in the their show room. I’m 63 now and lost my right leg 2 yrs ago, and still use my equipment. Stop worrying about the other’s opinions. How would your folks feel if you lost your life? Cut open the ear holes so your ears drain.

    It might feel disorienting at first, but you can learn to sharpen your instincts and awareness with a helmet, just like you learned to do it without one.

      Yep - as I said in another comment i've had to adjust to helmets for skiing - I definitely felt less aware initially (and wanted to give up on it) but you adjust quickly. So glad I did as helmets have DEFINITELY saved me from a cracked scull at least once.

    Learn the helmet dude. If people can learn to surf without an arm, you can develop the senses you need with a helmet. Find the one that works the best and get reoriented with your senses. Just my thought for what it's worth. You're one of the ones that inspired me to learn to surf with my kids even though I was over 45. Thanks for your work!

    That helmet has a spartan vibe, maybe get one with cool graphic. Nobody likes wearing a helmet, but as a motorcycle rider it’s mandatory. Wear it enough and you’ll forget it’s even on.

    I used to surf, but now I snowboard backcountry, etc. and MTB. I know of people that went from aggressive hell-hound riders to being completely sidelined and wear special sweaters with cute bears on them after bashing their skulls snowboarding. I wear protective gear and I'm still able to ride while others are often hindered by soreness or worse. Of course, I didn't learn this until I broke bones all over the place until it sunk in because I'm also an idiot.

  • @lv42daze
    @lv42daze 8 місяців тому

    i know its totally different than snowboarding/skiing, but everyone wears one, pros, kooks, nobs, etc. for critical surf breaks it will just become the norm, no stigma. good for you for trying.

    Be careful. If you have another concussion while ATP is still low, it can be very bad. ATP does not get back to normal until between 22-49 days according to studies. Symptoms go away much sooner than full ATP recovery.
