    So you’re considering an electric car? Compared to a gas powered car, an EV will be better for your wallet and the environment over the long haul. But you know what’s vastly more efficient than an electric car? An electric bike. Should your next EV actually be a bike? Is an electric car / electric bike combo the cheat code to eco-friendly urban transportation? Today let’s talk about it.

      I'm still on the PHEV bandwagon until battery tech gets better. My Chevy Volt is perfect. 50 miles electric with a little 17 kWh battery, and an efficient gas motor for long trips. I have been tracking it and with my usual long work drives to see customers a few times a month where I actually burn gas, I get about 100 mpg. Not MPGe, just 100 mpg when I consider all the miles I cover between fueling. If it weren't for the occasional long drive for work, I would never use gas at all. I used exactly 0 gallons while on paternity leave and all my daily tasks were

      @@HoffmansHooptiesPHEVs take some research/thinking to pick. Most get significantly lower milage than an ICE when using their engine, and some can only do slow speeds on battery. They should be a good solution for lots of folks in the US though.
      I should search around and see if there is a channel which breaks down the models available and what sort of use cases they are best for. The manufacturer's marketing materials aren't so useful.

      My brother-in-law in Korea wants to get a new car, and the Ioniq 5 is pretty much a perfect fit... But he doesn't want one because they are used as taxis there 🤦‍♂️
      Anyways... Ebikes (or even just bikes in lots of places) are great. There's a bit of chicken and egg problem with the infrastructure though. Use one if/when you can, and over time we'll get to a point where there are more good opportunities to use one.
      PS: It might be cool to do a video about renting vehicles. You don't need to actually own the right tool for the all those very occasional jobs ;)

    I must say, I love the direction of your latest videos. As someone who really love cars but has been getting into e-bikes and alternative modes of transportation the channel really hits home for me. Sure, I live in Sweden, in the 6th most bike friendly place on the planet... It was only natural to get rid of my car and instead rent one whenever I need it. But I understand that's near impossible to a lot of Americans. But I hope, I really hope you can continue to spread this positive outlook on alternative modes of transportation, as a car enthusiast. Hopefully people start to demand safe bike infrastructure from their city. Because it truly gives people a lot of choice and freedom. If I look here in Malmö, Sweden I see children, teenagers, people with various handicaps, businessmen, elderly; Just normal people from all walks of life, riding bikes and e-bikes instead of cars. Without that infrastructure a lot of these people, especially kids, teenagers, elderly and handicapped, would all be robbed their freedom to move freely. In a car dependent place they lose their independence, and become dependent on people around them with cars.

    I'm glad that a fellow car enthusiast is saying the same thing about e-bikes as a great transportation alternative. You could even cover how other enthusiasts might find them to be excellent additions to their garages although really, I feel like we have our work cut out for us. You know as well as I do that proper gearheads LOVE mod culture and will take any chance they get to upgrade whatever they can on their cars. Similarly, I encourage you to look into e-mobility brands like Super73, Zooz, OneWheel, and Onyx because they have their own respective aftermarkets backing them up, covering everything from simple cosmetics to complete drivetrain overhauls. You'll be surprised how in-depth the mods go for these bikes, and it might even convince you to try it yourself.
    Word of advice though: unless you have the patience and resources to get a Sur-Ron/Talaria street legal, don't go down that route. Stick to anything with pedals.

Imagine dragging 5,000 lbs around with you just to sit in a cubicle for eight hours. A team of the brightest engineers couldn't create a more wasteful way to get to work and back home. Love this idea for a great urbanist and car enthusiast solution. I currently own 2 cars and 3 bikes and each of them have complementary uses. Miata for weekend, IS300 for daily, city bike for commuting, folding bike for packing on trips or lending out to others, mountain bike for recreation.
    As I recently began commuting by bike and train, I’ve found that the daily car is really not that necessary. I have been thinking of replacing the practical Lexus with another car but without the commute use case, I keep thinking of other impractical sports cars I could buy. Maybe a Corvette, or another Miata…I have a problem.

    Get a cargo bike like a tern gsd or urban arrowr or load 75. Add that with a plug in hybrid minivan. We fill up on gas every 6 weeks. Can do 30 miles in the van on electric. Almost all errands by use are done on ebike or a cargo ebike. Cargo bikes can easily hold a weeks worth of groceries, hell even Costco runs can be done. Make sure ebike battery is ul rated. Hint letric is not so be careful when charging. Don't forget electric cars don't solve tire sound pollution we all forget how loud tires are at speed.

    I have lived with and without a car in both Boston and LA, and I really do think that ebikes can help people actually enjoy driving more by removing some of the trips that make driving a tedious drudgery. I mean, you get to do a lot of daily errands in a lightweight, open-air, manually shifted vehicle while not having to buy gas just to buy groceries or get to work. Then you can buy a fun car for the road trips or twisties practically guilt-free. I dunno, I know it's not gonna convince everyone but I do think the word is getting out that we don't have to always buy the most maximally practical vehicle at the expense of driving enjoyment.
    Also for what it's worth, I think EVs can be genuinely enjoyable on their own merits, beyond the launches. I had an Ioniq 5 for a few months as a long-term rental and yeah, it's no Miata but hearing my watch tick at 80mph was something I've never experienced before, and you really do hear everything the tires are doing.

The biggest problem I've experienced w DC charging infrastructure is the space that people who got free charging with their car take up. • @deanonesense
    @deanonesense 7 місяців тому +2

    As far as ebikes go, storage becomes far more important than when dealing with acoustics. The three top tips for avoiding bike theft are: 1) don't buy a bike you can't afford to lose, 2) buy a lock that costs a large percentage of what your bike costs (and that cost is purely for cut, pick, shim and bypass resistance and not Bluetooth or fingerprint readers), and 3) park your bike near the bike of someone who didn't do 1&2. Ebikes can't do #1 unless you are rich, have a very hard time with #3 and without dedicated infrastructure #2 basically means buying a motorcycle lock and possibly modifying your bicycle to work with it
    Special infrastructure means bike lockers fixed to concrete both at destinations but also at home at ground level.
    But in the issue of infrastructure: not bicycle infrastructure, but wheelchair infrastructure with larger turn radii so bicycles can use it.

    The electric bike sure, but in the US we still don't have many ***reliable*** and reasonably priced low-cost EVs. Sadly, in the low-cost car market the only options for reliable cars are gasoline powered. That may change in a year or two, with several announced vehicles... but we are not there yet.
    Maybe if the BYD Seagull (not what I'd call reliable but dirt cheap) comes to the US, the Aptera starts producing and in sufficient volume, the Nimbus One starts delivering, and the Chevy Bolt 2024 comes out with its flaws fixed and because of a more modern battery it turns out to be cheaper. Then yes... that combination would work great.
    As a matter of fact, electric recumbent bikes and trikes (with a good size basket for groceries) would be ideal for both exercise and short range driving.
    Amusingly enough... what you suggest is not far with what I concluded for my wife and me after a year of researching. Given the uncertainties regarding gasoline prices and EVs for the next 5-10 years I concluded that at this time I should buy low cost. After much struggling I concluded:
    - Nissan Versa (or Bolt EV if they release the 2024 model by the time I must buy and is cheap enough) as my main car although I would have preferred an Aptera but there is no way I'd get one in time for my needs.
    - Probably a Nimbus One with A/C when it comes out as a second "car" (really the main one for city driving except for runs to Costco), renting it for the first year and if still satisfied buying it after. Why this and not just the bikes? Florida. = A/C is a must, a bike would not cut it. But I will almost certainly not bother if the Bolt option works out and would instead go for the e- route for my bike.
    - A traditional e-trike with a large rear basket for my wife (or me when going for a quick run to the store). She'd also use it for exercise.
    - A recumbent 2-wheel bike or maybe recumbent trike, either one unpowered although the option to add power later might be there for when I get older, as it would be mine purely for exercise.
    BTW, the new Sodium-ion battteries are cheaper, more efficient and well... most of what you need is salt and power to make them.

    This two-EV solution could work for many moderately bikeable and transit-friendly suburban areas such as you have in Southern California. Even if it happens with societal and political will, it will be decades before many of our cities will be fully car-optionable. In the meantime and for some families/households, having more one-car families that also use transit, ebikes, bikes, and walking to get around when possible would save your average middle-class American families significant amounts of money in their budgets, cut down on urban auto congestion, and obviously be better for the environment. I could see many typical two-car families that drive sensible cars (say they have a Toyota Camry and a Honda CRV or similar types of newer, moderately priced, practical vehicles), selling two cars, rolling those proceeds into a slightly more expensive EV, and buying one or two Ebikes (or even just regular bikes). Also, if the electric car is just not in your budget for your household, you could consider selling your second car, keeping one of your existing ICE cars for Costco runs, road trips, and certain destinations, and saving CO2 and money by taking transit, biking, and walking as much as possible. Those of us advocating for less car-dependency on both a societal level and personal level are not asking for perfection and a complete 180, but just some effort on the part of everyone in getting creative and all of us reshaping our lives in the ways we can to both improve our individual quality of life and solve environmental/societal problems that our current transportation and land use paradigm has created.

But an electric bike increases range and also would be fun to take to scenic places to explore. It'll be a few more years before I switch to EV since most of my car trips are in very remote places in the US west. I just want the recharging infrastructure to be more robust. Incentives for people to find other ways of commuting. Following a comment from your last video, my city needs to give bikers a better way to get north to south, and west to south. To get from my neighborhood to one community I work in, I need to cross a large bridge that is also a highway entrance. And there's maybe 2 other options I can take. I use both electric car & folding ebike & electric unicycle. This is was a purely cost decision. I live in a rural area and work 30 miles away. The car charging at home is vastly cheaper than gas. The ebike & unicycle gives the convenience to park & ride public transit and still get to good destinations, or to avoid paid parking close to destinations by using further free parking options like residential streets.

    In my case, my truck only does truck things which is why it has under 50K miles for 2015. If not towing or hauling, it sits. I commute on my motorcycles, most of which are inexpensive to operate including fuel economy. I even shop on my sidecar rig...but that is the inefficient motorcycle so does not help my arguements.
    I do have 1-5 hooptie cars around at all times but I do need one for taking 300#'s of dogs to the groomers or those few days a year the roads are not fit for two or even three wheels. Besides, most of them will end up race cars or racecar parts at some point. I also still love older vehicles with personality and in the grand scheme of things, they paid back their initial "carbon footprint" for production a decade ago so as little as they get driven, they are better for the environment than me buying a new car.

    EVs, hybrids and plug-in hybrids are all more efficient than ICE, which is most green though depends on what you're doing and your local power grid.
    But what is clearly superior in every way anywhere traffic volume are large enough to justify the additional infrastructure cost is overhead electrification.

    Great video! I personally have my reservations about EVs and have driven some before. To me, they feel like what driving a washing machine would feel like. And battery EVs are so fundamentally flawed, I wouldn’t get one even if I could afford one. Having said that, I would probably buy a Hydrogen powered EV as it would be a better alternative for the future of the car. James May said it best during his review of the first gen Honda FCX Clarity: “It’s the car of tomorrow because it fits into our lives today.” I probably would buy a hydrogen EV if I had money for one and the infrastructure was more widespread.

  • @Toxic9813
    @Toxic9813 7 місяців тому

    lol. Not expensive? Better for my wallet? My brother in automotive love- a new EV will finance for WELL over $600 a month. Most Americans are only paying half that for their car note. Doesn’t matter if “gas” is cheaper, that kind of money is massive for most people outside of California. Not to mention higher insurance and the range anxiety that is totally novel for EV drivers.
    I’m on your side, I’d love an EV and they’re enjoyable to drive. But- To suggest that it’s anything close to affordable is just silly. New Corolla is 15-20k cheaper and more versatile, all the points you mentioned in the video.
    And for those of us that have a truck? Zero chance! EV trucks can’t tow for shit (range-wise), by and large. And a EV truck prices are is staggering, even when compared to a diesel TV.

    • @HelloRoad
      @HelloRoad  7 місяців тому +5

      Totally agree EVs are not for everyone, *especially* for towing. But just so you're aware, as of last month, average new car payment in the US is $770/mo! Average used car payment is $592/mo. You can get an EV for less than the average new car price in the US, which is currently $48k. A Chevy Bolt can be had for ~$27k, which is cheap by today's new car standards. Cheaper purchase price than a Corolla XSE

    • @ryannatividad3137
      @ryannatividad3137 7 місяців тому +1

      My suggestion and what is practical for many households is to just keep their existing ICE car if it's reasonably efficient and reliable, and get an Ebike or bike to supplement it. Using the car less, for whatever trips you are able to, would go much further to cut down on the negative externalities of personal cars, as well as put more money into your pocket through fuel and auto-maintenance savings than buying a new EV (or multiple new EVs) and driving everywhere. Also, when considering the purchase of a new car, even if it's more money upfront, more people should consider that the EV cost of ownership might actually end up the same or more affordable once the fuel savings are taken into account. This is especially true if you end up putting a lot of miles on your vehicle(s) every year.

    I think your points for the electric bike are valid. I think a gas powered motorcycle can fill that niche as well (I’m an avid bike 🏍️ enjoyer) except exercise.
    But I moved to the Midwest for work recently. There’s so many thousands of towns out here where basically all of us commute. Even if it’s only 13 minutes by car, that’s at 55 mph down the State Route. Even a Honda Navi is unsuitable for commuting. Especially in the winter.
    I see you are Californian so you may not know, this type of bitter cold is not just “wear a coat and gloves.” It’s 0 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter in Ohio frequently, anything but your metal cage with a heater is literally unsafe to one’s life. Basically 15-25 states in the US have this type of frigid cold (depending on how tough you are), whether they’re a dense city or rural farms or suburbs. Almost half the country, I’d wager.
    I appreciate the message but your “Californian” really is showing in this video 😂 I say that not to be mean or nasty but EV’s and e-bikes are really far away from being mainstream even in 2023.

      Using a thermal shirt & pants coupled with a softshell jacket or windbreaker is enough to stay warm. Your body will naturally heat up as you ride, and your clothes will insulate you. You dont want to go hard on clothing because you will just overheat. Motorcycles dont involve exercise, so staying warm with them is a lot harder.
