This song has always haunted me in a beautiful way. The way Gertrude's voice reaches out and grabs you, pulling you back to an era long passed.

Who thinks this audio is from 1934 must have too much marijuana.

Cleanest 1934 recording I've ever heard! ;^) Don't personally use this 'm' term ever (Cannabis only), but heck.. nice tune.

It is not from 1934. Even the singing style is wrong for the era.

This is NOT GERTRUDE MICHAEL who sang the song in the 1934 film “Murder at the Vanities”. This is from a 1991 cd called “Sing Before Breakfast: Songs from the Great Talking Pictures Musicals, 1929-1939“ and is performed by Geri Petchel.

This recording and the style sounds more recent than 1934

It is. This is NOT the original version. Sounds super cheesey and 80s to me.

Yes, Please do. What a fabulous song and performance (and obviously all recorded in one take). Fabulous voice, and such a clear recording of voice and piano (with great piano music too). Where is this from? Are there other recordings like this available? Is it actually Gertrude Michael singing? If so, it's a pre-1964 recording but the quality of it would suggest otherwise. Please, tell all. I'm mystified and entranced.

This is actually indeed a 1934 recording to all who doubt. The reason the recording quality is so good is because it is actually from a 1934 film Murder at the vanities.
Oh wait I'm commenting on a 6 year old video. Oh well.
    Good shit.

You're right the number in the film is shorter and it has an orchestral accompaniment this has a piano solo accompaniment.

This is NOT from the movie and is obviously a modern version. Geesh, it's easy to figure this stuff out with the internet.

This doesn't sound like Gertrude Michael to me. It's not from the "Vanities" soundtrack. A beautiful vocal though, esp. her low range (oh wait, her high one rocks too). I wonder who she is. Annie Ross (who wrote Twisted) did a downbeat version of it, maybe it's her.

She was cool way before any hippies were even a glimmer in their parents eyes!

Obviously this recording, which maybe Sims is a commercial release, is longer and clearer than soundtrack of murder at the vanities. Given the clarity and sound quality, I find it almost impossible to believe this was recorded in 1934 release as a 78, or as part of an optical track for a film. Sound has just too much Clarity and depth for a 1934 recording.

Who maintained the original stock recordings? Most films and audio recordings have rotted away or were trashed. Not to mention the warehouse for jazz recordings destroyed in a tornado a few years back.

I see someone finally posted the cut from the film, as this is definitely not from 1934 (in fact, I doubt this recording is from before even the year 2000 - the changes in tempo would be unlikely in a "vintage" recording, and the vocals would DEFINITELY have not happened ... when the singer goes up the octave ... I cannot imagine that happening much before the 1970s). I would be interested in finding out WHO this recording actually is. Here's another posting of the scene from the film. ua-cam.com/video/Ld1_mZrOlek/v-deo.html
