    About Wagakki Band's musical instruments
"WA" means Japan. "GAKKI" is a musical instrument.
    (1) "KOTO" (a large, flat instrument of about 6 feet)
The ancestors of "KOTO" came to Japan from China about 1300 years ago.
The body is made of fine paulownia wood. The back of the body is carved with a wave-shaped groove to resonate the sound. The strings are made of silk thread. Put "Kotozume" on your fingertips and play the strings.
    (2) "Shamisen" (instrument like a banjo)
Like KOTO, the strings are silk threads. Generally, the "shamisen" is used as an accompaniment instrument for quiet and light songs. (Current ballads, songs like light pop)
However, performer Beni plays a special shamisen called "Tsugaru shamisen". "Tsugaru shamisen" has a fast and powerful sound and a unique playing style.
It seems that the reason why this style was created is that TSUGARU-SHAMISEN was born in the extremely cold region of northern Japan (Tsugaru: place name).
People with handicaps (mainly visually impaired) who lived in harsh natural environments lived. They earned money by letting people listen to songs and performances. They created a unique musical style to save their lives. It can be said to be an instrument with a sad history.
    (3) "Wadaiko"
"WA (Japan)" + "TAIKO (drums)" = "WATAIKO". And the pronunciation changes from "WATAIKO" to "WADAIKO".
Like Shamisen, "Wadaiko" has evolved uniquely in various parts of Japan, and there are various playing methods.
There is a band called "Kodo" which is famous as a Japanese drum performance group. They are doing performance tours of Japanese drums all over the world. If you are interested in WADAIKO, we recommend listening to the performance of "Kodo".
    (4) "SHAKUHACHI" (bamboo instrument like a flute)
Until about 60 to 70 years ago, units of length such as "Shaku" and "Sun" were used in Japan. (The pronunciation of "sun" is like a shortened version of "soon")
    1-shaku = 30.3cm (It's a coincidence that it's almost the same as 1 foot)
    1-sun = 3.03cm
    "Hachi" is the number "8".
And the average length of "SHAKUHACHI" is "1-shaku and 8-sun (about 56cm)". The "shaku and 8" part became the name of the instrument.
The shakuhachi is made from bamboo grown in nature. It is a tool that allows humans to use the shapes created by nature as musical instruments. Therefore, the shakuhachi is a different musical instrument one by one, and it is a simple musical instrument with a hole in the bamboo. It is said that it is a very difficult instrument to use because it is simple.
There is a famous word that has been passed down in Japan for a long time about the practice of Shakuhachi.
    "Kubifuri-3nen, colo-8nen"
    This means that:
"It takes three years to train to move the neck and head to control the strength of the sound." Then, "it takes eight years to train the fingers to make a good sound."
It is said that Shakuhachi is not good at low and powerful sounds. Daisuke of WAGAKKI-BAND also seemed to have a tense face in the scene of playing a heavy sound ... Is it my illusion?

Actually their live performance is always better + you don't have to worry about the copyright issues. That's why i've seen so many reactors choose the live performance to react to instead of the MV, also they don't have to puts filter to covered the screen.
This band is amazing indeed. Thankyou. Hope you can react more of them

Warning...This band is highly addictive. They started by covering vocaloid songs, believe me you don't need any tech when you have a vocalist as good as Suzuhana Yuko. Their MV's are always great productions but it's their live performances where they really come to life and you see what brilliant musicians and performers they all are.

@@MattFarkas I had no clue either but it is almost like a hologram that performs with a live band, I don't know techy stuff well enough to explain it but you could check out Hatsune Miku, they did a song Senbonzakura, which Wagakki Band covered so that would give you a comparison. Personally I like my performers to be human.

@@johnbenson2919 Its not really a hologram per se. A vocaloid is basically a vocal track created artificially. Hatsune Miku basically is the "voice". The writers and composers of the song can all be different but its just the voice they use that identifies the vocaloid. (I believe so, i have dabbled in vocaloid but I dont know too much. How most vocaloid programs work is that you can use voicepacks (basically people saying syllables) and you create a song by artificially pitching and changing the rhythm to form "singing". Trust me, it sounds easy. Buts its not.

Vocaloid is a computer program that artificially creates a singer's performance.
Vocaloid can also make songs that real humans can't sing.
Wagakki Band tries to perform songs for Vocaloid using real instruments.
It is possible because of the high ability of the members of Wagakki Band.

@@MattFarkas A vocaloid is a synthetic vocal produced from a bank of voice elements. The voice elements are captured and processed from real voice. Vocaloid sound banks were released as named synthetic voices. Song writer / producers could use the vocaloid banks to make compositions on their laptop computer without hiring a band or vocalist. It took off in the mid 00s after the 2nd generation software came out. In Japan it became very common for real singers to cover vocaloid song.
(IMO - I usually prefer a good real vocalist, although good vocaloid works aren't without their merits.) The most successful vocaloid producer/tuner that I know of is "Mitchie M" A popular example "Hatsune Miku - Burenai ai de (by Mitchie M) [VOCALOID EDM]" On the Mitchie M channel. Welcome to the world of Wagakki Bands. The greatest band on earth.
"Tengaku" (Music of the Heavens) from their first album "Vocalo Zanmai" 2014. Wagakki bands do not use voice synthesizers. They have taken the songs for the first album from Vocaloid. Shigin singer Yuko Suzuhana is the driving force behind the band and has gathered all the musicians.
Wa = Japanese, Gakki = musical instrument. Wagakki = Japanese music instrument.
If you react to more WGB Stick to live video, MV licensed to Avex will be blocked. WGB is best liive anyway.
WGB constantly puts together big shows, One of Japan's most popular bands at the moment. Everyone is professional on their instruments, All songs are good, no one is equal, Metal, rock, jazz, ballads, funny songs, sad songs, etc.
WGB is an 8 piece band:
Yuko Suzuhana - Shigin, vocals (Founder of WGB)
    Machiya - guitar, vocals (Arrangement)
Beni Ninagawa - tsugaru shamisen (Three strings (guitar looks like))
Kiyoshi Ibukuro - koto (Japanese National Instrument)
    Asa - bass
Daisuke Kaminaga - Shakuhachi (Bamboo Flute)
    Wasabi - drums
Kurona - wadaiko, Taiko (Traditional Drums)

Wagakki is one of my favorite bands. They are all master class players Yuko, the lead singer and the leader, has curated. Believe or not they are super good at metal, punk, very traditional Japanese, jazz, slow ballade and fusion pop like this, and the concert version is better than the studio! Their melody line is very catchy, complex and innovative. So many recommendable songs // Senbonzakura, folk metal punk, studio version is listened 140 million times, the original is by a hologram singer Hatsune Miku. // Bring me to life, completely different but very descent one w/Amy Lee // Chieno Kajitsu + Somisan Seppa, first one beautiful metal instrumental, the second w/ mesmerizing Shakuhachi flute, Shamisen guitar and Wa-Daiko drums, you will enjoy completely different melody and percussion tempo from Western music // Hakushu Kasai, all the instruments solos and Yuko’s vocal.// Homura+Amatsuki no Ito, these two lives might be appreciated the most by US and EU listeners? on You tube, amazing play and singing…..I will stop up to this much LOLO

I would suggest "Hakushu Kassai" live from Dai Shinnenkai 2018 (New years concert) at the Yokohama Arena ua-cam.com/video/5sJnveBvoLw/v-deo.html or "Kyoukasuigetsu" + "Tsukini sakebuyoru" - live from REACT tour 2019 (english sub. provided) ua-cam.com/video/aWlMc-pbDc8/v-deo.html . Both performances are great examples what Wagakki is all about. Its must see and you will enjoy it.

There are already excellent comments about Wagakki Band and singer Yuko Suzuhana who created Wagakki Band. Those comments are excellent, so I don't need to repeat what they said, other than to say that Wagakki Band and everything they do is absolutely excellent.
Instead, here is some unimportant (and maybe inaccurate) info about vocaloid.
Wagakki Band does not use vocaloid, they became famous by covering songs originally written for and performed by vocaloid (and Wagakki Band bass player is a vocaloid music producer outside of Wagakki Band).
Vocaloid is digital sample based singing and speech synthesis software. Samples of singers and actors vowel and consonant sounds are combined in complex patterns and phrases to allow user to compose songs with melody and harmony by typing in lyrics and music notation. Some vocaloid music producers use vocaloid software to write and perform vocal parts and songs that would be impossible for a human to sing naturally.
Vocaloid has a very distinct unmistakable robotic sound that is different from classic vocoders and from autotune. Korg even made a guitar effects pedal with a vocaloid engine to make your guitar sound like vocaloid. Some say it is the most unplayable guitar effect pedal ever.
There are vocaloid characters who sing, each in a (sort of) unique voice. Vocaloid is the software which gives voices to these virtual singing anime / cartoon characters. Vocaloid music producers have taken this concept to the next level by using hologram technology to project vocaloid characters in sync with vocaloid software live on stage with a live band in front of an audience. It's just like any music concert, except the singer is software+hologram. Probably most famous and successful (most musical sounding) vocaloid character is Hatsune Miku, she even performed on David Letterman show, long time ago.

Vocaloid is the source for some of the covers they've done. It's a combination of CGI and voice synthesis software that allows people to create animated song & dance videos. (edit: also tunes the voice based on entered musical notation.)

They don't use vocal synthesizers, the Vocaloid thing the wiki said is because they sometimes cover songs originally made using Vocaloid. Tengaku, the one you listened to, is originally a Vocaloid song, as well as Senbonzakura.

You will enjoy their live videos. They are all master musicians and some even teach/lecture at universities. Yuko also performs sword and fan dance in many performances. She is a master Shigin vocalist and concert pianist.
They all compose, giving great varity to their performances. Beni, the shamisen player, was a national champion in her teens. Machiya plays baritone guitar so as not to overwhelm the traditional instruments. He is also responsible for much of the sound /arrangements.He is always barefoot and composes some beautiful ballads. You will really enjoy the songs composed by Kurona, the Wadaiko drummer. Asa, the bassit, also composes great songs that are often sentimental and catchy. Kiyoshi, the Koto player, was a cultural ambassador when he was a teen. He is a master at tunning the koto quickly. Daisuke plays the Shakuhachi and is sometimes seen doing air splits or leaping while playing. I have seen comments that he has Iron Lungs! Wasabi, the drummer, is often seen in earlier videos with Japanese characters on his back. I have read that hey are the name of the concert or a song. Thank you for your great reaction. I love these songs in particular:

    Yoshiwara Lament
    Tsuioku
    Hakushu Kassai

Wagakki Band was put together by the singer Yuko Suzuhana. There are eight members of the band. Vocaloid is a series of software products that allows a person to program a digital singing voice; I'm vaguely aware of at least one digital idol named Hatsune Miku that has put on large concerts. I know at least one of WGB's members, Asa the bass guitarist, is/was a Vocaloid producer. WGB's first album, Vocalo Zanmai, was a collection of Vocaloid covers.
I'd advise you to stay away from WGB's official videos, at least for your reaction videos. Avex, WGB's record company until up recently, is super aggressive about the offical videos. The live videos from channels like Frank Garcia, CC W, and Crystal Clouds are safe.
As far as where to go next, I recommend "Overture" + "Ame Nochi Kanjouron" from the band's Dai Shinnenkai 2018 concert. Their "Overture" is different every time I see it; in this version, it's a quick introduction to the band's members. "Ame Nochi Kanjouron" is the band's first single. I'm recommending this video because it shows WGB in what I feel is their best live recording. The crowd is huge and hot, the band all sounds, looks, and performs great, and the production values are quite impressive. Here's a link.

Vocaloid music stars anime characters. Think max headroom, or al Pacino’s Simone. Wagakki Band’s biggest hits are covers of hits by vocaloid artists. Senbonzakura is probably the biggest for WB, and has a great video and showcases her vibrato (Enka? tho I think that just means folk music). ua-cam.com/video/ponTbDDMYjw/v-deo.html Homura /Akatsuki no Ito is a great live vid from them, shows off the i stadium sized appeal. Who knew a flute player would take 13string silk harp, and three stringed fret less banjo to heavy metal heights?!
