Happy Sunday everyone! Everything I touched went wrong this week, but autumn has definitely arrived at my little Scottish cottage and I tried to make the most of it - around the rain of course!
Oh bless you! It's all looking lovely though, Jude ❤ that must have took you ages to rake all those leaves up, lol xx Hope you're doing well, and had a good weekend ❤❤
Your videos continue to be beautiful, comforting, and relaxing. I look forward to your videos every week. They truly are becoming the highlight of my weekend. Wishing you all the best, Jude!
Hi Jude, I came here to say how relaxing and inspiring your videos are.❤ I am glad others commented before me, I just thought I would add one more for the algorithm and to show my support.☺️
Hi Jude, I hate adding to anyone’s problems after your wood staining story, but I feel that I need to pass on a bit of advice (as one who lives in your area). At this time of year when the geese fly in for the winter, we go to the hardware store and get some mousetraps. (You can get humane ones) We get field mice every year and we have lost our food, dog food and they chew through wiring too. My house is over 100 yrs old and lath & plaster like yours. You will easily know that you have them because you will hear them running up and down inside the walls, or see tiny shiny black droppings (my terrier lets us know when they arrive). Storing food in sturdy containers is a good plan too. I love watching your videos❤ It reminds me of when we first moved into our house. I must have been wearing those rose tinted specs that people talk about but we’ve been here over 40 years now and love living in the countryside.
Ohhh that is VERY good advice, thank you! (Getting a cat is also on my list but none of the ones I’ve seen in shelters can live with dogs, and I am desperate for a dog!) I’ll stock up on some humane traps - I’ve used them with peanut butter in the past (there was a terrible few months where we had rats in my kitchen at university 🙈🤦♂️)
I agree with the mice! I always hear them running in the attic. We live in a woods, and without fail, we have to set up the traps in the fall. The only thing mice can not get through is glass. Plastic, cardboard, you name it. And they LOVE fibers!
Jude, I have one complaint, your videos aren’t long enough. Thank you for reminding me of the dreams I had when I was younger, I’m living vicariously through you. ❤

Jude, I have been building custom picture frames for over 20 years. And I still cut mistakes! Every time I do, I hear my grandpa in my head "measure twice, cut once." I swear I will next time! 😅

As always one of my favourite people to watch …. As someone who lives up north may I suggest you invest in a decent ( rechargeable) head torch for the darker days to come .. so you can see easily when going in and out of your sheds..it won’t be long !
Yes!! I actually have a head torch (because you never know when you might need one!) - it lives in the car, where it’s completely useless 😂 it would make much more sense to hang it on the back of the kitchen door! Doing that this week!!
Just a tip when it comes to raking and hauling leaves. Instead of raking smaller piles of leaves and then picking them up and putting them into a wheel barrow, take an old bed sheet, lay it on the ground, rake the leaves into it, pick it up by the four corners and haul it like a big sack back to your leaf compost bin. You can take many more leaves on each trip and take many less trips to the bin instead of pushing a small wheel barrow back and forth! My husband has done this for years and it's very convenient and fast! Give it a try! I'm really looking forward to Winter and Spring at your 150 Year Old Scottish Cottage! 🙂
That’s such a good idea! This week I’ve been using the big blue ikea bags to move them round in - because I have an excessive amount of them (thanks for that, mum and dad!) 😂 I’m excited to see the seasons change - especially now I have winter tyres on the car and a tank full of heating oil!!

You make it look really easy but I guess it must take such a long time. You are really watchable and I’m so glad to be along on your journey. And as a woman of 71 learning not to be so fearful of my Milwaukee drill!

Beautiful video. A leaf blower will save so much time and energy when dealing with leaves. I even use my lawn mower on my leaf pile to break down the leaves quicker. Then put the in the composting bin.
I avoided using my mower because I thought it would pick up too much grass - but people have said on the highest setting it just picks up leaves, so I’m going to test it! (When it stops raining next!)
I think my favorite part of this video was that your old scissors worked so much better to cut the wire than the wire cutters - because of course they do! 😆 Have a great week, here’s to your water butts filling up.
Sure, it’s the autumn of your 150 years old cottage but certainly not winter yet, since you’ll make it live for another hundred years bright and shiny!
WatchinIg you on a Sunday morning sooths my soul. I had to laugh with all your troubles, not because of your errors, but because I would have made the same mistakes or even worse ones. It is a joy to have such positive energy in the universe.
Do you ever watch Colette at Bealtaine cottage, in west of Ireland. She’s a kindred spirit living alone and looking after her small holding? An inspirational woman. 😊
Your videos pass soooo quickly! Loving your filming and the accompanying music so much. You have a good eye, a steady hand and a can do spirit. See you next week. ❤
Everything you do Jude turns out amazing.Brilliant sanding job I would just use clear Brywax on them so they look like antique pine. Can't wait till next Sunday to see your lovely smiling face x
We have a big pile of leaves, grass cuttings and coffee grinds down the back, my husband loves your idea with your leaves so he’s going to do the same thing. The seeds on the ground around the wood pile are coming on. 🥰
I’m going to try it on the highest setting when it stops raining! I was worried it would collect too much of the grass - but if it does, it can be added to the normal compost bin so it’s no loss!
You weathered the frustrations and came out victorious. Nicely done on the compost bin. Leaf mould is a wonderful thing on garden beds. Looks like your ever increasing skill sets are paying off to me. Please reward yourself when you complete projects. A well set fire is good. A cup of tea and a treat even better. 😊
I’m definitely on board with the rewards! One of my neighbours across the field came and introduced himself the other day and brought over a box of biscuits - I’ve been enjoying them!! Although tonight is homemade apple and blackberry crumble (which is in the oven as we speak!)
Your problem solving and carpentry amaze me. As an ole lady from the US I wish you a happy week. I enjoy your content every Sunday morning. Thank you for sharing.
Do you have a leaf bag for your mower? You can ‘mow’ your leaves up, they get chopped to tiny bits & will break down to lead mold faster. Love your channel!❤
Screws in wood at an angle are more likely later down the road. To come lose or cause a split in your wood. Like when you screwed the screen in. Otherwise you did a great job with everything else. You have done an amazing job doing everything yourself. Be proud. You are doing great.
The screws I used for the screen were an absolute nightmare to get in! They have a wider head - which I thought would work well with the mesh, but they were a pain! 😂 washers and normal screws would’ve been better! Hey ho!
My advice for your pine furniture is paint it put a big plant on top so you don’t see much of it. Pine drinks stain. Find some second hand oak or maple it takes stain beautifully. Ditch the pine.
Hi Jude. May I suggest you have a few of those leaf bins dotted around your property, I think you're going to need them. You might also find that they'll need lids, to stop the wind blowing the leaves out again. May I also suggest using the lawn mower to pick the leaves up. It helps speed up the process of them breaking down by mulching them somewhat, and as an added benefit, saves time and effort from all the raking.
I think I might make another leaf bin - I’ve seen a couple that are just mesh pulled into a circle with wooden posts - and I have lots of leftover mesh, so I might tuck another one into a corner somewhere! The current one is pretty sheltered, so I think they should be okay without a lid - although there’s a lot of wind and rain outside tonight, so who knows!
@kerfuffle9312 yes it's cold here in scotland we have had three days in a row very hard frost to the start of the day winter is just around the corner pitty here in scotland we never had a summer aw well there's always next year
You are a nice young man.I feel you've been on a long journey to get where you are now.I wish you well in everything you try,and achieve.May your cottage be your sanctuary.
For years I lived on the outskirts of a major Australian city on acres of bush. We had to collect rainwater for house use, not water laid on. As you may know Australia is a dry continent, and we used to hold our breathe hoping our rainwter tanks would last a dry summer, if not we paid for the water tanker to fill that huge tank. I know everything that can go wrong with this system of getting and keeping water. From dead possums getting into the tank, rendering the whole tank unusable, to dust turning to concrete in the guttering and not only finding no water in the tank but you need to replace all the guttering around the house. What a wonderful life it is living rural! You are learning, and with learning comes joy. I'm now 77 and live close to the city, but my rural life is still loved in my heart.
Oh wow! Yeah, I feel like water collection in Australia is a lot more vital than it is somewhere like northern Scotland, where it rains at the drop of a hat! 😂 that sounds like a magical place to live though!!
Hello Jude!! Charlene here from Texas, USA!! First off I want to say how sorry I am on the loss of your parents. I so admire you on taking that huge leap of faith & moving to that beautiful cottage! (yes, I AM jealous!😂) Oh, I have a neat tip for you when raking leaves. When raking, & a bunch of leaves get stuck on the rake’s “fingers”, simply flip the rake on it’s back & pull toward you. The ground will easily pull the leaves off for you!😁(I saw you pulling leaves off with your hand so thought I’d share😊. Love your channel & am a new subscriber!❤
love the leaf mould frame, even if it took a couple of attempts! My mum stores the leaf mould in bags, and then halfway through them breaking down she empties them one at a time into the chicken run, the chickens have a good dig through it all for any stuff which also gives it a turn and exposes it to the air so it rots down a bit more, then she collects it back up into (fewer) bags to use as and when she needs it! Lots of ways to do it, hopefully yours works out well for how you need it!
Me too! The only thing I don’t like about winter is the lack of daylight hours - which only gets worse I will insist on continuing to move further north 😂😂
Hi Jude, I''ve been enjoying your content. It's nice to see someone doing something new to them but still have done some research and correcting mistakes along the way and being smart about it. I think being a creative helps you in that regard. A thing about your leaves in the yard-you can just mulch them with your mower set on high or some mowers have a mulching setting. Then you can just leave them to feed the grass. I ditto the other watchers about your leaf gathering for your leaf mold pile -make it as simple as you can for yourself. Love your little gem of a greenhouse!
I’m definitely going to run the leaves over with the mower when I’ve filled up my leaf bin! (At the moment I’m kind of enjoying raking up the leaves - it’s almost a relaxing little treat after doing some other jobs!) 😂😂
I feel the excitement Jude every time you unearth something hidden in the undergrowth that you can repurpose, you’re doing a great job , oh to be young and full of energy 🥴👍
I admire how you keep going until you find the solution all on your own. I love watching you putter about the property and I appreciate the transparency about not doing it all correctly the first time lol. Thanks for your videos my friend.
Oh sweet Jude, I love when I get a notification of your videos. They are a balm to my soul. My paternal great, great grandfather came from Inverness. I hope to visit someday (at 75, I’d better get a move on🤣). In the meantime, I watch your videos and dream. I relate to having to do a project two and three times. Like you, I just stick with it and eventually get it done. Some people never try, Sweetheart. You’re way ahead of the game. Sending you always, love and hugs. ❤🤗🌹
I find this content so comforting. Like a favourite jumper you pop on in winter. You are creating such a lovely little calm place, I wish I lived there as well! 😎 Now all you need are some cats to roam about 😄
That is the best compliment! (I put on a cosy jumper this morning for the first time since last winter and I am loving life! Haha) I do need some cats! Not least because I’m pretty sure I have mice…
For someone who says it doesnt come naturally to him, you're doing amazingly well with the renovating and homesteading and have accomplished a lot in a relatively short space of time. I think youve found your vocation in life with your cottage and gardens. 😅. Love your videos and how you document everything you're doing and finding solutions to problems.😊😊
Thank you!! I’m loving it so far - it feels like I haven’t made much progress, but looking back on the videos makes it feel like things are happening!!
Hi Jude, I just love your weekly video’s! So interesting to see what you are doing out there. Beautiful shots of your handywork and the surroundings, plus a lovely fire as a bonus 🔥 I bought my house a little over two years ago. It was structurally sound, but in dire need of an update / lots of TLC. I enjoy DIY but have to take it slow/work in small increments due to health issues. Still, I’m making progress. Just today I finished taking down an ugly suspended ceiling downstairs. Yay! It looks so much better already, even though I still need to repair the holes in the ceiling and repaint ceiling, walls and woodwork. Right now I’m just grateful I managed to get one project done. Take care, and see you next week! ❤
That’s amazing! I know exactly what you mean about slow progress - at the rate I’m going, I don’t think I’ll ever get the house renovated! 😂 but progress is progress! And one of my favourite things about documenting my projects, is I have a record that I’m actually doing things - so I must be making some progress! Haha
I absolutely cracked up on your sanding project comment. That would so be something that would happen to me. Do all that only to have it look the same. 😂😂😂😂
You are lucky to have so many glorious existing plants in your garden. Someone has really loved it in the past. I hope all that ivy you put into your compost bin does not come back to haunt you, as it so easily roots and loves taking over. You could use those leaves in the base of your raised beds too. I was wrapped to get as many as possible when doing my vegie patch, to add to the straw, blood and bone and cow manure, I used to make my soil. I hope your water tanks fill quickly for you. Full marks for problem solving. Amazing how much wood you burn through with a wood fire and stove to keep fired up! So inspiring Jude!
It’s such a joy to witness your good nature and determination, and to share in all your triumphs. Not to mention those ‘learning moments’. You’re an inspiration.
Lay a tarp flat on the ground and rake leaves on it, then grab an end and pull it to where you want it. It can hold tons of leaves and is very lightweight.

It’s a great leaf mould bin Jude. We have two as it takes 2 years to break down so we fill it with the present years leaves then turn it after a year and make sure it’s not too dry then cover again and we start on another years bin. I guess everyone does it differently that just how we do it.

Sorry about the frustrating week, Jude. I am glad we are included and we hope you have an easier time in the weeks to follow.
Thank you!! It wasn’t so bad - not in comparison to all the things going wrong so far this week 😂😂
@@rewildingjude 🙄 Well I sorta hoped it would be better. Oh well. There's always next week 😁.
Your filming and editing are very good. You have a super place with lovely outbuildings and greenhouse. Great job with everything!
Thank you!! I’m so lucky to live here!
Dear Jude! You are living a purposeful life. I draw inspiration from you. Keep going and doing you. ❤️ an old lady from Ohio.
That’s so kind of you! Thank you! 🥰
Do you ever watch Colette at Bealtaine cottage, in west of Ireland. She’s a kindred spirit living alone and looking after her small holding? An inspirational woman. 😊
Oh I would love living next to adorable cows 🐂🐄🥰
Your videos pass soooo quickly! Loving your filming and the accompanying music so much. You have a good eye, a steady hand and a can do spirit. See you next week. ❤
What i like most about you , Jude, is your ability to laugh at yourself and keep on smiling !!😊❤Great trait to have !!
Oh definitely! Life is too short to take yourself too seriously!
I love your beautiful little films - they make me feel very relaxed and peaceful.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying them!
Everything you do Jude turns out amazing.Brilliant sanding job I would just use clear Brywax on them so they look like antique pine. Can't wait till next Sunday to see your lovely smiling face x
Ooh I’ll look into brywax! Thank you! (I know very little about furniture restoration - which is not a surprise to anyone!! 😂)
You are obviously getting very strong. Impressive the way you lift, carry, drag so many heavy, large or cumbersome things around.
Hahaha strong or stubborn - one of the two! 😂😂
Why don't you just fill barrow with wood to wheel to the house then fill the basket at the door, saves all lifting especially in cold weather.
Loving this channel, I can relate to so much of what you’re doing. We’re in a similar situation but in rural Leicestershire. Keep up the good work😊
We have a big pile of leaves, grass cuttings and coffee grinds down the back, my husband loves your idea with your leaves so he’s going to do the same thing. The seeds on the ground around the wood pile are coming on. 🥰
Your content is wonderful, but you also have a real flair for videography! Well done!
Thank you! I’m really enjoying the videography aspect - it’s not something I know much about but it’s a great creative outlet!
Jude you need a blower so you do t need to rake. The property is looking beautiful. Well done.
You could run your lawnmower with bag attachment to pick up leaves. They would be chopped and rot down and compost quicker
I’m going to try it on the highest setting when it stops raining! I was worried it would collect too much of the grass - but if it does, it can be added to the normal compost bin so it’s no loss!
@@rewildingjude yes I just compost everything together.
Thankyou for sharing your little paradise 😊
Thank you for joining me!!
Lost my brother. Your videos help me
I’m so sorry to hear that. Grief is so hard 💗
Sorry for your loss . I found these videos just after I lost my Dad. They help me too ❤
You weathered the frustrations and came out victorious.
@@rewildingjude Oh yum, enjoy!
@@rewildingjude Oh you used the blackberries!!
You are doing a fantastic job Jude keep smiling ❤
Your hard work is showing...your home is just beautiful.
Your problem solving and carpentry amaze me. As an ole lady from the US I wish you a happy week. I enjoy your content every Sunday morning. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much!!
Hey ho!
I love all the flowers in your garden. Especially the roses. There is kind of a secret garden vibe going on.
Oh to have such quiet neighbours. x
I love it! The peace was my main reason for moving!
My advice for your pine furniture is paint it put a big plant on top so you don’t see much of it. Pine drinks stain. Find some second hand oak or maple it takes stain beautifully. Ditch the pine.
Hello Jude from Northern Arizona, USA. You're doing a fantastic job. We all learn by mistakes and practice. Blessings to you!🌺
Thank you so much for taking us with you through your journey of the week. Greetings from Lübeck at the Baltic Sea
Thank you for coming along!!
What an amazing life you are creating for yourself.....truly an inspiration!! ❤
Thank you!! I’m having a great time doing it so far!!
Sanded pine looks sooo much better!
I use a layer of green, a layer of brown, and a thin layer of soil, and repeat till full; to inoculate and keep good bacteria thriving.
It’s already a cool Fall here in Canada with a chilly Wind 💨 and Frosty Mornings.
@@kerfuffle9312 Hi there I’m in Alberta Winter is coming for sure I Love Fall though 💕
Oh I would love to visit Canada looks a beautiful country
@kerfuffle9312 yes it's cold here in scotland we have had three days in a row very hard frost to the start of the day winter is just around the corner pitty here in scotland we never had a summer aw well there's always next year
@@annescott6137the cold, dark winters would definitely be an easier pill to swallow if we had more reliable summers!
Thank you so much!
That is SUCH a great tip!! I really appreciate it - I’ve been pulling them off by hand so that’ll speed it up!
@@rewildingjude ☺
love the leaf mould frame, even if it took a couple of attempts!
That sounds like the best use of leaf mulch ever! Do the chickens break it down further?
Jude, get a large tarp and lay it beside where you are raking leaves. Put the leaves on the tarp and you can drag it to your compost cage.
I love Fall and Winter. Your property is really coming along.
Same
Me too! The only thing I don’t like about winter is the lack of daylight hours - which only gets worse I will insist on continuing to move further north 😂😂
Yayyyyy. It's purple bucket. 💜
The purple bucket is the real main character here - I’m just the camera man 😂
Jude, I love everything about your videos! Love your humour, your choice of music, your videography. It all makes for such an enjoyable watch 😊
Thank you so much!!
Another great video. Thanks. The end shot made me think “Jude’s fireplace channel”. ❤
I just loved the end shot.🔥❤️
Haha!!! Maybe I need a second channel for live fireplace action 😂😂
Now all you need are some cats to roam about 😄
That is the best compliment! (I put on a cosy jumper this morning for the first time since last winter and I am loving life! Haha)
I do need some cats! Not least because I’m pretty sure I have mice…
You really are quite amazing, persistent, creative and hard working. So nice to see how you repurposed bags and more.
Haha I loved the bit at the beginning with the bird seed and your parents.
Hi Jude, I just love your weekly video’s! So interesting to see what you are doing out there. Beautiful shots of your handywork and the surroundings, plus a lovely fire as a bonus 🔥
I bought my house a little over two years ago.
Yeah Happy Sunday, Jude I so look forward to Sundays to see what your up too.
Love the Dad overall vibes.💙
Hahaha I have a few pairs of my dad’s overalls - I can’t remember where I packed the other ones when I moved though 😂🙈
Thank you so much! I can pretty much guarantee there’s going to be a lot of learning moments over here 😂🙈
excellent opportunity to purchase a leaf blower/collector combi
Stranded Elf would have loved your Scottish cottage ❣️
She really would’ve done! I can just see her sitting outside, watching the cows and getting absolutely nothing done 😂😂
Take care Jude 🥰
Lay a tarp flat on the ground and rake leaves on it, then grab an end and pull it to where you want it. It can hold tons of leaves and is very lightweight.
You can make your own stain, any color! Master painter here, any questions just ask.
My thought exactly! If you don't mind me asking, what's the best way to keep the light, fresh colour of the wood in your opinion?
@@Tudsepigen varnish yellows over time, varathine and urathine used for marine applications stay clear much longer. Oils change the color when applied, do a test spot. There are water based varnishes, but not good for high use areas.

I was thinking exactly that ..sanding then staining ..try waxing instead briwax ? Oh, bless you with the wire ..I admire your enthusiasm to get things done , despite setbacks . After all it's a learning curve 😊
Bleach the wood before you stain it. Pine tend to pull orange unless your staining a really dark color😊❤
Thanks for giving us a peak into your world Jude. So relaxing and calming.
Thank you for coming along!!
You do need Garden Grabbers. For example: Spear & Jackson Plastic Leaf Grabber. The long handles will save your back. You'll be more efficient and be able to do more.
Hey JUDE. Hope you and your guests had a good time. You have 🪵🪵🪵 which is good for the 🌨️☁️❄️ ahead. Working on different projects is a good idea to. While the weather isn't too bad. Looks great. You are such an amazingly hard worker. You've inspired me to tackle my garage, so you get points for that. I am absolutely loving this journey you're on and looking forward to the next installment.
I needed to pause your video because when I saw you cutting the net, I remembered that I need to order netting for making a fence. I need to make it so my dog can't walk over the stone fence that is only one meter high and in the winter it gets snowed over. It was a good reminder. Thank you for that. I can totally relate to your water collecting saga...quite often when you think that you are done with a project, there are still some adjustments to make...I was also reminded of your father when you lit the fire. What a warm and cozy way you have kept him in your life.
Jude, I'm very envious of you. You're living out the dream I had when I was younger. Too many years have gotten in the way, and now those thoughts are a memory that makes me smile. I will watch your videos and be so happy for you and your dream.
Dude. This is so relatable. I've been battling a home project all morning and it keeps going poorly.
It’s so frustrating isn’t it?! I was putting together a shelf this morning and the amount of swearing I did 🙈🤦♂️
Jude, I'm puzzled with the "love/like" on the comments from you. Your avatar but I accidentally touched on it and it states, ❤️ Frugal Queen in France "???
@@rewildingjude Yes, much more cursing than progress hahahawaahhhh.
Forward planning and patience are wonderful things to strive towards. I have no doubt you will grow in both aspects. Your videos are such a gift to us-thank you. ❤

Your vlogs are a delight! Thank you for sharing.
Defo recommend a fold out chair in the greenhouse and a wind up radio……👍
Oooh wind up radio is a great idea!!
Secret is not to overwater the radio too many times……I did mine whilst watering seedlings……fortunately it dried out😱😀
It’s a great leaf mould bin Jude. We have two as it takes 2 years to break down so we fill it with the present years leaves then turn it after a year and make sure it’s not too dry then cover again and we start on another years bin. I guess everyone does it differently that just how we do it.
That’s a great idea! I have plenty of mesh for a second one, so I might make a circular one in another corner!
