- Today we’re going to look at one of the funkiest bass lines from one of the greatest bass players of all time. Come On Come Over by Jaco Pastorius from his debut solo record.
The bass lines in this song are on the absolute must know list for anyone looking to learn that 16th note funk style of playing.
The chorus bass riff in particular contains one of Jaco’s signature lines that he used time and time again.
We’re gonna look at the intro, the verse riff and that chorus riff, break them down and I’ll give you some tips on getting them under your fingers

- When it comes to learning a song Mark has the best, most organized, presentation.
Thank you for making Jaco available to us mere mortals, great presentation as always!
This is the difference of something taking weeks to learn as opposed to hours Thank you so much!!!
Hey man, just want to say thanks for your brilliant tutorials on both this track and Rio by Duran Duran. I've found 16th note funk really challenging - especially when you want to nail all the nuances and articulations - and you're the only guy who's had the patience to detail every last ghost note. Really appreciate your hard work 👍
That was awesome...
Nice bass too...
I want say : you re the best when it's bout explaining and making learn these difficult bass lines
Thank you
The universe really wants me to learn this song, just started trying to learn it on my fretless Monday. This will be a huge help, thank you!!
You'll excuse my impertinence, but I don't think the universe cares. YOU do, and that's what matters.
Update?
One of my favorites from his first album! Definitely need to practice this slowly haha!
This is such a great lesson! Thank you!
Finally getting around to this one! Another fantastic lesson! Thanks, Mark!
Amazing, thanks!
excellent lesson!
This was an awesome lesson! Thanks for posting
Amazing tutorial!!! THX very much! You are a brilliant teacher
Sweet Great Bass playing n teaching.
Thank you
Thanks for this video Mark 💯
you introduced me to this song, thank you so much!! this jams
Awesome teaching skills
Keep it up mate,
Love it! 😊
Love your presentation style, especially the way you not only go through the notes of the lines, but give tips on fingering technique to help the music flow. It'll be a while before I get this down as only an early beginner, but so glad I bought your Beginner Bass & Bassic Fundamentals courses. I find your instruction style easier to relate to than others I've checked out - gives me the confidence to push forward with learning even on the hard days 👍
Another fanatic lesson from one of my favorites, plus I've been working on 1/16th note lines via Rocco and this fits right in. Thanks!
Thank You Mark!!!!!❤
Classical music for bassists
The intro lick to this track is fantastic, tough to get right too.
Very very cool video! Thank you so much for this lessons
Thanks Mark great job!!!
Great lesson! 👍
great Groovie Lessons Thanks
Great stuff!
That’s seriously impressive Mark, Jaco was next level, especially those timings.
Mark dude keep up the great work!
Thanks for this. You managed to teach a lot within 24 minutes very impressive
23:37, advice for life. Great video!
Mark, you are a great player and instructor. This lesson is taking my bass playing to new levels. Thank you so much.
Thanks!
Superb video, and the summary emphasising feel being a function of technique and familiarity was spot on!
Very, very cool!
Mark you are a master!
you are great! the same groove! thanks
It is basically the only radio friendly song by Jaco :) I love it!
Very good 💓 🎸 sounds Riff for the tuning melody sounds rhythms.
That's an excellent bass line Mark. I wish it was a easy as you make it look.
Thank you so much, it's so hard to find anything off of Jacos solo album. Much love to the Talking Bass crew!!!
Wonderfull
Great breakdown - it's so difficult for talentless ear-players like me to figure those notes out. Can't wait to try this now.
Mark is really f*cking good
Good one.
Man, thank you so much for this lesson. I tried to get it down using a cover that one other channel did, but the note choice on the fretboard was inferior and simply didn't click properly. This video is great!
Your a wonderful teacher! To have a bum like me playing this entire thing at 90bPM is nothing short of a miracle 😂 the intro and verse I have up to full speed just not quite comfortable but I’ll get there!
Incredible bassline. On a side note I wish they had basses like that available is the U.S. Those SIMS Quad pick ups are incredible.
Excellent tuition and performance Mark, thanks! Pearls of wisdom at the end too - "if there is tension or hesitation in your playing, the groove is going to suffer" - well said Maestro!!
How about breaking down some Louis Johnson? Thanks again bud 👏👍
Thank you very much. Looking forward to getting this under my fingers. Hope your tooth is better.
I think Norman Watt Roy made use of the chorus section for some of Hit Me With Your Rythmn Stick ? 🤗
Beautiful execution, by the way.
Can you make a Disco Ulysses song tutorial for Vulpeck!?!?!?!
Hi Mark, fntastic lesson! I'm going to give this a month at least. By the way, what is the full spec of your bass? Love it.
Mark, you did it again! Not only is his an excellent and extremely comprehensive breakdown, your choice of basslines very often have that "Just what I was looking for"-factor! Norwood Fisher, Les Claypool,... A logical follow up lesson could be a Francis Rocco Prestia bassline. Just saying...
Keep up the good work
Already done What Is Hip. Just search the channel for it. That should be a good follow up to this.
@@talkingbasslessons Thanks for the reply. What Is Hip is a fantastic groove! I must've missed that lesson because I usually try to follow hem all, if time allows. Had no idea Rocco had passed away in 2020 either, damn! Another great bass player gone, such a shame...
You are the fucking best. THANK YOU MARK🙌🙌🙌
thank you Mark! Anyone got tips to help with the tone?
A classic is bridge pick-up, tone down, pluck close to the bridge, good luck, let us know if it works for you !!
thank you, but every time when you say "OK?" ich think: NO, it is not OK - for hours .... ;)
good explanaion !
Holy. Crap,!
10-4
💙👊😎
come on come over is level 1 on charles scale
What kind of bass do you play ?
Enfield Lionheart
"Major sixth gives that myxolydian flavour" ??? A little slip of the tongue I suppose?
