The buck stops with the executive and C-suite folks at REI. They mismanaged the entire process by putting in place a flawed rigid policy and botched the subsequent move to a new verification vendor. Regardless of the some aspects of the culture at REI, they are, after all, a huge corporation with leadership that is clearly disconnected from their "most important asset", their employees, as is the case with most large organizations.

I put a Mitshubishi Mini Split unit in my garage. My only regret is that I did not do it 25 years sooner. I now have full control of the temp both summer and winter. My garage door is insulated and I can air condition my garage down to 62 degrees when it is 98 outside and can heat it to 62 when it is 10 degrees outside. I just love it and get so much more work done in the garage now as I an work comfortably year round.

So crazy you're almost at 30K, it's so incredibly well-deserved, I'm so excited for you!! I'm sorry to hear about the dreaded leave of absence paperwork. My boyfriend has a lot of heath issues and he's constantly making calls to insurance, doctors, etc. It's practically a full time job in itself! So I vicariously understand the nightmare. Glad you're feeling better and that it's all behind you now - and so much is ahead of you!

Not quite the “happily ever after” story I was expecting to hear from you Amanda. The old saying about when one door in life is closed, another opens is true. We are all the better for you stepping through and joining us, laughing with us and traveling with us. What ever your past life was that included REI is a good memory. That being said look what you’ve accomplished since then. Simply put “YOU ROCK GIRL”. You give inspiration to thousands to “Get out and do the thing”. Not only that, you lead the way. You host events, and actually show us how it is possible to enjoy life on two wheels. You are obviously the better for it (save one broken arm and a scrape or two). I look forward to viewing your travels well into the future. Thank you for all you do and for the decision to quit retail and establishing yourself as one of the leading women bikers on youtube..

Good for you!! I am glad you are well!! If you do not spend a ton of time in your garage a propane heater is sufficient, yet if your in the garage as much as I am you will want a more permanent solution. Ironically, I may have something next week you may be interested in. I also insulated my garage door which was pretty simple. I wish you all the best and ride safe!

I was in Portland waiting for my bike to be serviced / fixed in Beaverton, to re-commence my RTW and ended up buying a new tent from you in REI - it was certainly a nice boost to see someone who's videos I have followed. (I got so frustrated with my old tunnel tent, and ended up giving it to a guy working at a hostel in Vladivostok!). All that paperwork shenanigans is ridiculous for what should be automatic when there are health issues involved. I wish you all the best with your endeavours and I really value and enjoy your content. Keep going and all the best.

I'm so glad to hear your health is doing well and you are happy with your job situation. Taking care of yourself is job #1! As for garage heat, definitely absolutely without doubt do the garage door insulation kit if all you have is a bare uninsulated door. It made such a huge difference to my Utah townhome (very cold in winter!) that I didn't have to put a heater in the garage, just open the door to the house when working in the garage to let some warm house air in.

I found that the double reflective bubble wrap type insulation works well on the inside of garage doors. You can tape and staple it into place. If you have a 240 V socket in your garage, you could use a wall or ceiling mounted heater. I found one for $100 and it puts out 5 kW. I had to source a plug and cord which was a few more $ but it is a cheap and effective solution. It is also fairly quiet. Good luck with your channel!

Hi Amanda, to answer your question at the end, I have insulated my garage door with plastic wrapped poly-styrene board, typically used to insulate a foundation. I bought two 4x8 sheets and it was WAY cheaper than buying a kit. a sharp knife, measuring tape, straight edge and some aluminium tape is all you need! I then added a 1500w radiant heater and life is good in the garage now :) Keep healthy!

I don't have a heater in the garage, but if I needed to heat it for a project I'd pull out our emergency heater for the house, which we have used during an extended outage and it worked great. A Mr Heater Big Buddy heater, with an adapter hose to hook it up to a bbq grill-sized propane canister. It cranks out plenty of heat and is safe for indoors. It has a fan that runs off batteries, or you can buy a power cord pretty cheap.

Many of us that watch you have great words of wisdom and encouragement, and hope the best for you. In the spring I plan on a bucket list ride. I am also trying to learn how to record it all and vlog it to youtube. I have learned a lot from you and your videos. Overall, the one thing I have learned from you is be myself, and be honest. Where will Amanda end up months, years from now? Who knows, but I am confident you will still be on you feet, confident and smiling. "do the thing"!!!!!!

I use a 'Torpedo Heater' in my shop. They are available in a variety of sizes and burn propane or kerosene (diesel). If your shop is like a 2 car garage then get a small propane fuel torpedo heater.

Concerning insulation, the gaps around the door leak a lot of air. Where the door contacts the door, check if there is any daylight. If there is a rubber insulating piece that can be glued to the floor under the door. Check a overhead door companies or construction supply stores.

Insulation on your garage door will help a lot I have a propane heater form Colman very similar to the buddy heater but much bigger works good for heat but what I don’t like about it is the condensation it puts out sounds like you are making things work out hard work will pay off in the end you do a very good job with your Chanel and seam like a very likable person I look forward to seeing more riding videos

I’m so sorry you went through that horrible time with your stomach ulcer. My wife and I bought a Comfort Zone 240V 7500 W garage heater CZ230ER from Rural King online. It was $150. I paid an electrician to install it ($165 materials, $300 labor). It’s been great. Of course, our garage is fully insulated so that helps a ton.

Had a wood stove in my old garage, and an old overhead gas furnace. Using a propane torpedo heater at the moment but they make a lot of condensation. Diesel torpedo heaters tend to stink unless they're burning perfectly. If you're looking for gas heat Mr. Heater makes some overhead mounted, externally vented shop/garage heaters that aren't too terribly expensive and work really well in my experience. Usually available at places like Lowes, Home Depot, Tractor Supply Company, Big R, etc. Anything gas that isn't externally vented you'll need to watch out for CO buildup. Chances are if it's a way to heat a makeshift workspace, I've probably tried it, LOL. Hope it helps, and glad you're feeling better. :)

Glad you got better Amanda. I heat my garage with two heaters. One is a $40.00 electric oil heaters that looks like a old fashioned radiator and the second is a garage sale 220 amp heater I picked up this summer. I had a 220 outlet in my garage and just had to change the pig tail on the heater to match the outlet. It does not get real warm out there but it takes the chill off.

Just keep going. You are doing great stuff and past is past.
I would pre-heat the garage with a convection type kerosene heater (indoor rated, but it would still give me headaches if used too long in a confines space) and then maintain with an electric space heater. This allowed work on the cars in Colorado winters so it was a pretty effective system.

Garage heater: look into getting some sort of infrared heater. Some are plug in models, some hardwired into your electric. Like the ones restaurants and bars use for their outdoor seating. There's upright ones, horizontal ones, wall mount, standing etc. Figure out what is the best option for the size of your space.

@@AstheMagpieFlies Thanks for the welcome. I have fairly good ventilation out there. The Mr. Buddies are safe in a living space. The way they convert the propane into heat doesn't put off any bad gasses. I use a combo smoke alarm and Carbon Monoxide alarm. I like the Mr. Buddy too because it has a tip sensor to shut it off. There's a boatload of videos testing them out for safety in motor homes, tents, houses... I knocked mine over on purpose after letting it run for a bit. They're pretty good kit.

I would recommend a personal heater to heat you where ever you are at. Something to consider is the electrical in your garage. Example I only have 1 outlet in my garage and an electric heater can easily flip the breaker on its own. If that's the case a propane heater might work better and be more able to heat the space instead of just you.

I'm so glad you were able to sustain doing your art and UA-cam to be full time and being able to prioritize your health. The corporate BS and paperwork always sucks and wish the system was easier for everyone. As shitty as that situation was, you're coming out on top! No mud, no lotus. Heaters...As for garage heaters. We use a propane forced air (torpedo style) heater to heat it up really fast. It takes about 20min to go from 40*F to about 70*F.....BUT....they aren't supposed to be used indoors without proper ventilation. Any combustion style heater will use oxygen and expel carbon monoxide so you always have to vent the area. Which in the winter isn't helpful. It only takes about 10 minutes in a 300-400sq ft room for the oxygen to drop below 19.5% from the normal 20.9%. Those burn hot and fast so you'll lose oxygen faster compared to other smaller combustion heaters. Vented heaters are a good fix for the CO issues but are pricey and involve venting it.
We also have a wood stove that we use with a box fan to circulate the air around the room. If you go with IR or ceramic heaters they use a lot of power and are sort of hit and miss. They are ok for keeping right beside you while you work to keep the chill off. Same goes for those little oil radiant heaters.
Sorry, I went a little overboard with that.

No garage heater because I live in Houston.
I'm very glad that you had the support. I understand how hard that gets; years ago, when in my first marriage, I had both a point where I needed to quit a bad job and one where I needed more time to recover after major surgery. Me ex worked full time and we could have managed on her income but she refused to cut any unnecessary expenses and cutting only my spending wasn't going to be enough so I had to push through. It seriously sucked and did a lot of harm to me. I took two years off work after my divorce to recover from the cumulative effect of it.

I tried electric heaters, but 1500 watts doesn't do anything in my 2 car garage.
I am now using a propane heater that is 2 burners bolted to the top of a regular tank used for the grill.
My understanding is that this isn't necessarily super safe for indoors and it could produce an unhealthy amount of CO2 depending on how complete the burn is.
So I try to do a combination of shutting it down for a while once the place is an ok temperature, and/or cracking the garage door a foot or two to let some fresh air in.
I think a good and safe system would be a vented propane setup, but that's a big project. Lot of time and money.

I used a Cadet Space heater 4K watts, 220vac to heat my 30' x 30' shop that was well insulated in Idaho. You'll need a 20A, 220 vac outlet min. to plug into unless your dryer outlet is nearby. Insulated or insulating the garage door will help. Is ceiling insulated? I finally install a 6K watt heater permanently. Much better for 900 sq. ft. Stay warm! 🥶 I use to date a gal who had bad ulcers. Not fun at all!
